- "The Pearl", Earl Strickland vs Vietnam's Phuc Long Nguyen from the 2022 International Open 9-Ball event. This was a one-loss side match, so both players were competing for their tournament hopes. As usual, Earl drew a crowd of fans to watch him play.

We’re all adults here. Announce the man’s name in full pronunciation for Phuc’s sake.
Comment of the year
Ha ha ha.
😂
What kind of cue does Earl play with? It looks like he made it out of spare parts 😂
Honestly, Schmiddy and J. Jones are two of my favorite commentators.
I know John personally, too, but, I'd think he's awesome regardless.
And John is one of the funniest people I've ever heard when he wants to be.
(last, it's nice to hear Jones give credit to Mark Wilson's insightfulness -- I believe it was during the HK challenge at that).
first time actually hearing john Schmidt commentate, really like him. him and JJ should work more together
I was watching an old video of Earl racing Shane to 100.
And I noticed Earl can kick
He sure don't miss many hits no matter how hard or impossible it might seem. He's favored to hit it.
Yup. Everyone gets annoyed and impatient sometimes when kicking an unearned safe ... but on top of (as you said) hitting with any speed, angle, spin, etc., is that he chooses routes conducive to either separating the balls, freezing the cue ball, or making the object ball ... as there are almost always easier routes from which to just hit the ball (that'd also sell out far more often).
I think Earl prefers pockets that aren't overly deep or flared (spitting out balls) ... as he likes a fast pace rather than those slower, more tedious styles of pool that some people embrace.
Nobody likes watching slow paced players which is about half the player base now days , I wish earl was in his prime playing on todays equipment which the advanced shafts n stuff . Same with Keith mccready, don’t let his odd mechanics fool ya , Keith could flat out play some pool with the best of em .
Met long when he was practicing for the international here in norfolk. Super chill guy
More earl please 😍
Fuc Long Win is the best name ever
ok Fuc Long , Fuc Dragon
Have always liked JJ's analysis; and thought it was a lot of fun listening to John in the Talk-Box: strong work guys: and man that Gunslinger Earl is fearless!
I always Nguyen something from my wife when Phuc Long.
Earl still spinning the cue with blue Masters..love it !Who needs a $30 cube??!!??
I'm a huge Earl fan, but honestly, I logged on to hear the tournament director pronounce the name of Nguyen's full name. Sadly, he only said Long Nguyen. I was wanting to hear Phuc Long Win.
Have never liked the alternate brake.
Earl Clutching his Pearls Strickland.
Kielwood shaft earl is using??
No, it's a J Flowers Cue and shaft.. New deal for Earl and Rodney Morris, who were on tour recently together in the far east.
Sorry, my mistake. This is a 2022 event. Eral and Morris inked their deal with J Flower Cues in 2023.
Any snooker player would agree with JJ about the skids. If you play a 'soft stun' where the cueball is sliding, not rotating at the point of contact with the object ball, then more often than not, you get static friction, which will push the pot thick. When learning snooker we're actually taught to use side or top spin not to control the cueball off the rail, but to break the static friction at the moment of contact and 'straighten' the pot.
It's way more noticeable when the table is bigger, the pockets are tighter, the balls are smaller, the cloth is thicker, you use the rails less and generally use less spin.
Precise position is less important, but accurate pocketing from distance is critical.
This isn't snooker this is pool if you remove the chalk from the equation then the skids go away and I'm willing to bet 10000 on this
@@John-jl4to It's billiard balls hitting billiard balls. Though the equipment in snooker makes these kind of contacts more likely. You're right in that the majority of skids are caused by chalk, but they happen with clean equipment on an off angle soft stun, and the ball will be pushed thick, just as it is here.
@@John-jl4to In particular watch what happens when he pots the pool ball using a stun, as opposed to with draw or with English
@@chriscolabella880 please don't be offended Chris but I played professional pool for 27 years and I've played tons of snooker ran many centuries on the 6 by 12 the snooker balls are smaller therefore more skids as the chalk takes up more space on the little balls the kicks or skids are caused by chalk which is why the snooker pros are switching to taom chalk.
@John Not offended at all: don't worry mate, it's a discussion, we're allowed to disagree!
I'm not saying kicks/skids are not caused by chalk. The vast majority are. I'm saying you can get a heavy contact, which will push the pot thick regardless of chalk, if you play certain angles certain ways.
Did you watch the clip I posted above? Literally shows what I'm talking about, without chalk, in slow motion.
The budding anthropologist Was interested in the pronunciation of Long's full name 🤷
haaha
JJ is absolutely right. As you stroke the cue ball, the object ball will observe your stroke and will decide if it will skid or not. At 58:45, Phuc moved his shoulder too much causing the stroke to look ugly. The object ball clearly felt repulsed by this, thus it decided to skid. It's simple quantum mechanics folks.
Lol dude 😂😂😂
As a quantum mechanic I agree 😂
John ... "We can bet." LMAO. Jeremy's super smart, but -- I agree with John here; the CB has no idea what your arm did.
Game 10 (Nguyen scratched from 8-9 ball) ... WTF?? All he had to do was hit that with slow high-outside to go above the side.
Easy to judge from the chair but I actually scratched this exact shot more times than I'm willing to admit, lol. Because of where the 9 is, ideal position is to come below the side but if you misjudge the cut the outside spin doesn't grab enough and cue ball ends up higher, close to the middle pocket. He should have known this at his level, obviously.
I'm with John on the skids.
John is dead right and has all the data to back it up
Robert u r spot on bud
@@John-jl4to I may be crazy, but I also feel that if the OB is sitting on a chalk mark on the table it could happen then as well.
@@robertreese2600 no you're not crazy Robert it's 100% caused by the chalk nobody can make balls skid with a special stroke and I'm willing to bet super high on that
@@John-jl4to Yep, Dr. Dave did a video about how tip hardness doesn't change the contact time on the CB. I would assume that a funky stroke would not change that fact lol. Nice chat! Have a good rest of your night.
Nguyen is American?
Cool Earl's still chalking with Blue Masters...take that you $30 a cube Roku !
Something wrong with that ref not calling him on those soft breaks
Something wrong with that ref not calling out Strickland for being a jerk. Let people break the way they want within the rules. Strickland has gotten away with being an ass for too long now.
@@flipflopski2951 double standard is real my friend. People are so blinded by one side and they can't see the rest.
When your a 5 time us open champ and 6 times world champ like earl you can get a dick as much as you want to ! Earl has forgot more about pool than most haters no
At about 47:20, Nguyen, with a clear kick possible on the 1, chose to hit the 7 (which he pocketed).
Why wasn't that a foul and Earl getting ball in hand?
Disregard, pool players. He gave up the table to Earl after that 7.
When there's a 100 points difference in the tpa but only 1 game apart?
That tells me somebody's getting rolls with some butter on em.
Oh yeah Earls got him a little fishy on the line here.
Earl should bark at him a little bit.
That guy wants it anyway...let him have it Earl.
Customers always right sir.
Gotta make your customers happy.
If I'm Earl I bust every backer that guys got.
Settle the deficit between America and China.
True American Heroe..
If the cue ball doesn't come off the table on the break, it should be illegal break. Foul,Foul,Foul.break like this with regular rack ball would even hit a rail!
Earl is a great player. Don't care for him when he's bratty.
To Jeremy Jones: Stop to talk about yourself and comment the game!
You better dont Phuc with him
Got into a little squabble there I can feel the guys ego coming out
Phuc.
Alternating break is so dumb
I love Earl and his style, but c'mon announcer at about 16:35.
Says, 'Earl does 5-600 sit ups a day, runs 5 miles a day. Before, maybe. Nobody runs 5 miles a day and has a gut hanging low....non-sensical rubbhish.
Chalk is what causes skids not stroke.ill bet 10.000 they cannot cause skids on demand with stroke.i dare someone to bet me please I could use the 10k
chalk I would say 99% of the time.... that or more.... have seen "foreign" material cause one, too. Like dirt or something other than a well polished smooth finish on a ball. But stroke?? Nope. Love ol JJ but stroke aint never gonna cause one to skid. Maybe he really means "miss" bc a poor stroke can damn sure cause that. lol
@@williambarnes-fg3oh you're absolutely 110% right William it's the chalk or dirt or handle or something but it's a foreign substance that makes the ball skids nobody can make a skid happen on demand with their stroke and I'll bet ten thousand on that and you are spot-on
Disagree. If you stun the cueball so it's not rotating at the point of contact you get static friction. Very often this pushes the pot thick. When learning snooker I was taught to play with outside or top spin to break the static friction and 'straighten' the pot.
This is much more a thing in snooker where the balls are smaller, you use the rail less, and you generally play with much less spin.
@@chriscolabella880 exactly it's the friction between the balls is what causes skids it's not the stroke if somebody uses Town chalk you will never get skids I don't care how you hit them which is what Jeremy Jones cannot seem to comprehend
Not jj but other commentator talks too much 🥱
Pool and sports in general where competence trumps diversity
Ugh.
Phúc Long quá kém
Embarrassing. Poor dude.
Sit-ups!, 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Clearly not working . Must b eating good for someone who’s supposed to b broke
Nobody likes commentary were you know it all it sucks dude..literally ruins the match
John Schmidt talks too much, too anecdotal and is just cringe.
This was 2022 and Earl played great, looked good and now just a year later Earl is walking and playing like he has aged 10 more years. WTF
Earl has had his time , unfortunately all the all time greats in all sports get old , but during his prime at his absolute peak gear , nobody was as strong at 9 ball than the pearl . I’d say at his absolute best earl was a 840/850 Fargo player
