Earl is cool. I went to Akron Ohio and Chicago Grand Plaza tournaments with he and Buddy Hall in the early 80's. He was a cocky player that bounced around that table, cute as a button. Buddy was slow, easy and focused, acting like a father figure to Earl. It was an awesome time. When they lost Monroe Brock I think it was a huge hit on both of them. Great guys. I had the pleasure of spending half of that year with those guys. Good times..great memories

I feel it is prosthetic doping, you can tell for Instance on the 9ball shot on the 5th rack, 90% of the time a player even a pro would have to jack up and go closed bridge, due to how close the cue ball was to the rail, however that brace allowed him the stability to keep the bridge open, which allowed him the speed necessary to pot that ball. That being said, technically they're allowed to use a bridge on every shot, regardless if it's necessary or not, so by the letter of the law, it's legal.

Remember, many of the very best players of yesterday never competed in tournament play, or rarely, so most people never heard about them. A few competed later in their careers, but, early on, many wished to work under the radar, so as to remain relatively unknown. Earl knows this to be true. There just wasn't enough money in the tournaments back then to draw out all of the best players, so many stayed out of the limelight in order to remain unknown and to be able to gamble without all the fanfare, instead. And, frankly, I question the overall quality of the talent that is out there today. I'm actually not all that impressed with many of them. Also, as they are always playing under nearly ideal conditions today, and especially when one considers the widespread interest in the game worldwide now, we see it has attracted hundreds of players from all over the world. So, of course it was bound to lead to more quality players competing, and they are competing for much greater prize money than ever before. And, today's players are playing with undeniably superior equipment; from the cloth, to the balls, and the cues that are currently available and in use, and even the tables, to the lighting, and even the venues. Just as an example of one of the differences, jump cues were completely unheard of until fairly recently. And back in the day, we were relegated to using our playing cues to jump with, if and when that was even an option of trying a jump shot with them, so we did very little of them before jump cues came around. Earl was an excellent shooter of the jump with his regular cue, BTW, and that's likely why he eschews the use of the jump cue, still today. And, I concur with his sentiments, I think a player should not be allowed to use anything other than his one playing cue, with the two exceptions of a bridge stick and an extention handle; and that's to include not even the use of a break cue. These newer balls and faster cloths allow for a far easier spread of the balls, anyways. We see that dry breaks are far less evident in today's game just because of these two elements, so why the need for a break cue? Don't believe me? Then just try breaking on the old nappy cloth and with those clay balls of yesteryear! Even Earl would have trouble running nearly as many racks with that old equipment.

22:36...you would not see many pros shoot a safety with the table like this and all balls open and a simple shot to make the ball...I would not call the leave needed for the 6 simple...but it's pretty simple to leave a clear shot because position on the 8 is pretty much natural no matter where he puts the cue ball for the 6...it's not even against the rail...if it was then safe makes sense kinda...but he obviously was not confident enough to get the run out or he would not have shot a safety

I'm a fan of it. I've watched tourneys without one and it can get too drawn out on safeties. Those tourneys usually end up going real late into the night/early morning. With a fast clock it keeps everything on schedule
