    If anyone's interested the guy in the video who pioneered this technique is New Zealand athlete Tuariki Delamere and despite a lack of experience very neaely broke the world record the first time he used it in competition - he would have broken the record had he not fallen backwards on his hands after landing, this was in 1974 and it was banned in 1975 - Delamere remains the unofficial record hilder for the somersault long jump.

    • @DolleDriesRoelvink

      His feet landed around 8.40 meters ( which would have been a world record just 6 years earlier ), falling back caused a still impressive 7.70 meters. Defeating the world #1 in that match. Achieving this after only a few weeks practice 😮
      A 9+ jump is very possible with this technique.

      I'm native enough to believe, that IAAF didn't fear court cases, but just didn't want athletes to seriously hurt themselves. I get it, of there is a move that is hard and risky, but rewards with higher points or longer jump, it will become a "must" move, otherwise you aren't competitive. And if it means that there is a really big risk that young athletes cripple or kill themselves, or even highest tier athletes hurt themselves in big games, it's a smart move to ban it.

    • @Resmund
      @Resmund Před měsícem +35

      I maybe wrong but I think that landing so much momentum on your legs and spine is dangerous. If you look at normal jumpers the energy vectors are parallel to the ground so it isn't to bad but when you do a flip the vectors shift and direct a lot of force downwards and that is dangerous for your ankles and spine. Athletes take a lot of practice jumps outside of competition so the minimal damage would start to compound over time and lead to a lot of issues. Any sport should be done responsibly and not create cripples for amusement of others.

      @coolraul07 I just meant that, if they are gonna make take a stance on a sport, or a specific maneuver in a sport, illegal "because it is too dangerous", then at least have a little consistency.
      I still remember watching Sergey Bubka absolutely destroying World Pole Vault Records until he became so good, the only real competition he had was... himself. He was so good that it was a forgone conclusion that he would win, so the only real tension from the crowd was "will he break his own World Record again?!?"
      But the point is, he was clearing 19 and a half feet. This was previously thought to be impossible... until he then cleared 20 feet.
      Now, a flip into the sand is one thing.
      Launching yourself 20 feet into the air with a bendable (and very breakbale) synthetic fiber pole, is on a totally different level.
      There have been some very serious accidents in that sport.
      You can actually find some of the worst crashes right here on CZcams.
