    This is fascinating, man. I'm a rollerblader of 20 years, was flow sponsored for 6, and most of my progression came with skating with friends. Seeing someone start completely by themselves and still finding the enjoyment in the FEEL of just ROLLING is amazing. I hope you keep at it! Reach out if you want some insider knowledge on the process :D

    The single biggest tip I could give for everything rollerblading: It's all in your knees! From standing up, to pumping, to grinds, basically everything, you have to bend your knees. The thing we hear the most from non-bladers is "I could never bend my ankles like that" or "I don't know how you dont shatter your ankles". Secret is, it's not your ankles, it's your knees. So do some squats, warm-up those hammies and keep rolling! Loved this so much.

    • @milomeyer2175
      @milomeyer2175 Pƙed 2 lety +13

      What Richard said plus pumping is about bending your legs at the top of the ramp and straightening them as you hit the curve transitions back to flat at the bottom of the ramp

    Long time aggressive skater here... that was really good for only a week's worth of practice. You got noticeably better over the course of the week.
    I was surprised that you attempted a lot of challenging things despite being noob - those drop ins and stair cases can be quite intimidating for beginners. This video was really accurate in showing how it can be fun & challenging even at the very early stages. With practice like this, after a few weeks you should have the fundamentals on lock and know a handful of tricks. It's really cool to see people still taking up this sport/hobby in 2021!
    Here's some tips for other beginners:
    Bend your knees. It's really easy to lose your balance if your legs are too straight. Doing this will also give you more degrees of freedom to move & gets you closer to the ground so you don't fall as far. Keep your feet out to the side and keep one foot in front of the other (even if only by a few inches) instead of right beside each other, especially when coasting forwards. Your legs + ground should look like triangles from the side AND front - you're essentially creating 2 triangles and utilizing their ability to hold weight and keep things stable on 2 axis. This will stop your blades from flipping out from under you. Learn to shift/cradle your weight across one or both feet, toes & heel. Keep your arms out for balance. Be relaxed but braced/prepared to fall at all times. Falling is part of the sport so instead of avoiding it completely, learn to tumble (fall properly) and laugh it off :P
    Start slow. Learn to move around with confidence before trying tricks. When you do attempt tricks, break them down into smaller parts and work on the smaller actions beforehand - how much speed/height do you need? where are the forces at play? how do you have to shift your weight? how will you exit the trick? are there obstacles nearby?
    Faux grinding is great for practice - find a low rail and just try to keep your balance in different foot positions without any momentum (eg. Royale, X grind, Mistrial). Afterwards, you can have some one push you after you've locked your legs/feet in place to get a feel for the move. You can also ride beside a rail and place each blade individually on practice runs before committing to both.
    Have fun.
    And *wear a helmet* - the smallest moves or simplest tricks can result in really bad things.

      That was exactly what I was gonna say, so many beginners make that mistake but even having one foot slightly (as little as half a boot but more if needed) in front of the other at all times makes this 1000X easier. Landing stair sets and fakie especially, you can distribute the weight and balancing over a much larger area.

Its pretty ok progression for you getting comfortable with blading itself. I would suggest you get used both rolling forward, backward, and cruising because its part of the fundamental. The last thing you want when you try grinding is to hit your shin, so you might want to invest on shin guard when you try grinding.

    When you pump on a ramp, your feet always have to stay below your head, if you let them get away from you, you'll fall. It seems unnatural, but when riding a vert ramp backwards, the pivot point becomes your head instead of your hips.
    To make it easier for you, it's the same motion you use to flip on monkey bars, but hanging on to it by your chin instead of arms extended.

    Good start, once you get comfortable the "flowy feeling" is awesome, I liken it to the feeling of gliding (especially when bombing hills) as you just get to jump around and flow effortlessly. Things like grinding can take a while to get used to but just start with a soul and a frontside and work your way up from that. Also weirdly 180's can sometimes feel safer than just jumping normal, as on the off chance you mess up and your feet go from under you, you can drop forward and put your hands down rather than falling on your ass or potentially going right over and hitting your head, plus you can bend your knees more into the landing with a 180 which will reduce the distance you may potentially fall. For the same reason this is why I'm more comfortable landing 540's than 360's. Hope you stick with it :) and yeah rollerbladers and skateboarders don't tend argue knowadays...in the 90's it was a genuine rivalry but these day we all just see it as different types of artists painting on the same type of canvas. heck I even started learning skateboarding as I got older because the stuff I was doing on skates was getting a bit risky for a guy of my age lol. skateboarding I can just play on flatground and have fun learning new stuff...that being said, the years of inline skating has made it so easy for me to rollerblade I just get to enjoy doing simple stuff without really thinking now, so it's definitely more fun for me if I'm just wanting to have a play without thinking about progression.

    damn this is making me want to pick up a pair of blades and pick up my old hobby - I used to blade as a kid and got to a fairly high level and then discovered free running and put down the blades, funny because your journey was the complete opposite!! Your progression for 7 days in awesome and I loved that you got out of bed at midnight just to scratch the itch haha. When rolling around you tend to bend over and your chest tends to lean slightly in front of your knees my best advice would be to try and keep your chest on top of your knees... as for the pumping, you're struggling because your posture is quite low to the ground, when learning new things this keeps you safe and quite balanced (low centre of gravity) but when it comes to pumping you're un able to generate a pump because it requires going from standing pretty upright to squatting low (with your knees and not your hips and chest) Just keep on rolling, I feel like your posture will improve as you just get more comfortable on the blades and as for me, turning 30 next week i'm defiantly picking up a pair of blades and working towards backflipping a spine near me :D

  • @wacamac1006

    11:20 that was a perfect pump right there, your legs were going faster than your body and if you would've just leaned back a little more you would've felt the speed
    basically pumping is a center of mass concept, while going up you start knees bent and as you go up you rise with the ramp to create an upward force which will decrease the amount of downward force as a result of gravity. the same principle applies for going down a ramp, start tall, end low to create an additional downward force

    • @AdrianQuark
      @AdrianQuark Pƙed 2 lety

      I don't roller blade but the physics in this comment doesn't quite check out. When pumping, you can only exert force perpendicular to the ground. If you were to try to push yourself upwards while going up a ramp, you would end up just pushing your skates back down the ramp and falling over (imagine pushing a wheel on a ramp straight down, this just pushes it down the ramp). So if you can only push perpendicular to the ground, how does this translate into forward movement? Picture a curved ramp like a slice of a circle. When you are on the ramp, your body is actually rotating around the center of that circle. By moving your center of mass closer to that center (by standing up), you accelerate. It's the same reason a ballet dancer twirling goes faster when they pull their arms in, and why parkour athletes doing flips tuck their head and knees in. So whether you are going up a ramp or down, you always pump by standing up while you are on the curve of the ramp. This also explains why you can't pump while on a long straight ramp, you can only pump at a transition like where the ramp meets the flat ground. If it were just a matter of pushing yourself "up" the ramp, then standing up while going up a hill would make you go faster... which it obviously doesn't.

    • @AdrianQuark
      @AdrianQuark Pƙed 2 lety

      tl;dr: when going down a ramp, you also need to start low and then stand up as you go down. In a pipe or bowl, this means squat as you approach the transition, stand up in the transition, squat as you reach the top, and then stand up again in the transition.

    • @Fausto_4841
      @Fausto_4841 Pƙed 2 lety

      @@AdrianQuark pumping is also about weight distribution. you pump at the bottom of the transition and it reduces the weight transfering to the ground, so you can roll higher on the transition and shift the weight back to that there's more weight to use at a higher point on the ramp that gives you more acceleration when you're going down. the motion is kind of a mix of squatting, jumping, squatting more and, standing up.

    • @AdrianQuark
      @AdrianQuark Pƙed 2 lety

      @@Fausto_4841 that is part of it but I don't think it can be very significant. Try going up a long straight incline and squat on your way up. You won't feel hardly any acceleration or gain noticable height up the ramp.

    • @Fausto_4841
      @Fausto_4841 Pƙed 2 lety

      @@AdrianQuark the squat alone does nothing. its reorienting the weight based on center of gravity that actually does something. as you move along a transition the center of gravity is constantly changing.
      if i do your fixed angle incline experiment at the same speed, i'll get higher on the bank if i shift my weight at the bottom of the ramp where the incline starts and pump than if i just go at it straight legged. i dont know how to explain it from a physics experiment, but from personal experience riding ramps i can guarantee you that it works. it's a very similar effect as pumping on a swing. i dont know the exact physics of why those work, but just shifting weight at key times generates the energy or whatever force that gets you to swing higher.
