    my grandfather (who rollerbladed as a child) always told me: it's too late now, you'll never be able to do it, you're too old, you should have started as a child! Now that I have seen this video I understand that it is never too late, I will show it to him to make him understand that even you who have never skated before have managed to drop, grind and all those things in 1 week, well done, respect. (im 14)

  • @DPSFSU
    @DPSFSU Pƙed rokem +464

    The only thing I noticed when your jumping into your sole grind is that you're not getting low enough. You're keeping your center of gravity too high. If you squat when you grind, you tend to lower your center of gravity and it's easier to control. Cheers!! Great progress!

      This! Might also make sense to try practicing on taller obstacles since he can already jump high enough. Higher things make it easier to get lower on grinds and have your body positioned properly.

      @robertfox4114 Pƙed rokem +2

      Though getting a mobility to squat deep is a task by itself. Low soul grind where your spine is making a U-turn and you just look under your feet - is not a good looking way to grind.

    good job my man - your style has come a long way. I'd recommend (not to be rude) just practising skating rinks/streets/uni campuses etc without even thinking about grinding or doing 'tricks', just going fast, mastering turns, mastering skating backwards etc. Imo every beginner should reaalllly spend a good probable year or so just perfecting the basics - this way you can do the more complex stuff with much more confidence, and without it being as dangerous.
    Also, one of the best tips I ever took in and integrated into my own aggressive skating is to imagine doing the trick successfully in slo-mo as you're rolling up to it.

    Some tips:
    Balance: the key to good balance is always having one foot in front of the other
    Pumping: Is very intense on your legs, so dont be surprised if you get tired quickly. Pumping is also like a "Swingset", get to the top of the ramp (coping), then push all of your weight "into" the ramp. that's how you gain speed, get higher, and conserve energy. Having one foot in front of the other helps massively
    Grinds: Keyword is "Knees Bent" slightly. ALSO VERY IMPORTANT! You are falling on your grinds because your Feet are Too Close Together. Especially on "Sideways" grinds. If you want more Balance, Spread them legs!!!

    I remember being like 8, and going to a skatepark for one of the first times ever, I was trying to learn to pump and one of the older dudes told me to “treat pumping as if I’m on a swing set”, constrict when going up the ramp to build energy, and release on the way down the ramp to offload the energy. That piece of advice changed my life in skateboarding, maybe it’ll make sense for some of you out there too that are struggling. (Yes I know my example is from skating but it applies to rollerblading, bmx, and scootering)

    for your grinds you should try to center it
    you really should be dead center 'over it'
    even on a curb! and you really shouldn't try to 'jump' over it it's more about 'moving the feets at the right height' so your landing become softer and your center of gravity is way lower.
    keep it up it will come !

    Kudos for trying a handrail so soon... I bladed for like 5-6 years straight when I was a teen, never really hit a downrail with stairs. I hit stuff that high and ledges going down at quite a bit of an angle, but never straight to handrail with stairs. Granted, we didn't have foam pits and matresses and stuff like that, just a concrete one at a skatepark 20 miles away with 5 stairs - never conjured up the courage... We met other bladers better than us maybe once or twice all that time, so no one to really learn from either, this was pre youtube times - also, everyone at the skatepark hated us haha, well at least until they saw that we came there often and we learned to watch out for peoples lines...
    A quick tip for ya with the 360, I sort of have (had) the same problem as you, my weight shifts backwards, but I discovered that it's the same when I go fakie, but it's easier to recover when you're oriented that way because your hips bend forward better. So doing them fakie can give you a greater sense of succes by landing it more often and you can adjust the weight shifting issue slowly over time, without hurting your bum every time you fall... 😉 Also, try air 360 to fakie, that's a really fun one, and it's good step up when you feel like pumping gets too easy!

    My hometown of Garland, TX now has a badass park (one of the biggest in Texas) about 4 miles from my house, so I finally just said "hell with it" and bought some used size 13 K2's off eBay. They fit perfectly, so now I'm in the first week of relearning. I just wanna be able to flow the big local parks in the Dallas area, and there are several of them around. Once school starts and all the kids clear out the park during the daytime, I'll have more extended sessions with less crowding and chaos. Here's to not breaking my old ass.

    My one tip for you, Jimmy... I notice when you land a lot, your feet are next to each other, this causes imbalances to take a bigger effect on making you fall. If you find which foot feels naturally more comfortable slightly more forward than the other and focus on landing like that, you'll have way more stability when landing anything and also landing fakie! Comes to help a lot when landing from spins, especially landing forwards from a 360. Hope it helps!

    I've been rollerblading since 97, You put the skates on the shelves for a few months and it's like starting all over again. Sure, you get it back after a few sessions but it's really hard to keep up with. To progress you have to skate a few times a week, I've found even just to maintain my trick vocabulary I have to skate once a week or it starts to slip. Keep it up, rolling will get more natural to you. Already skating around you are getting much smoother. You are a born mushroom blader, not everyone was meant to be a grinder blader. Try a flat setup when you are a bit more comfortable, you will enjoy the simple act of rolling so much more. I'd recommend Oysi frames when you get to that point.

    Broooooo i'm so jealous you got to go to Woodward !! Congratulations, looks like one of the best place to practice skating !
    A few advices from a fellow blader : First, practice locking your soulslide on a ledge (or a coping) without rolling. Do it a thousand times and the muscle memory will get you there, you'll stick all your slides after that !
    Also, BEND YOUR KNEES ON RECEPTION. Go really low, as low as you can actually, your knees will thank you for that. Also, it's easier to land big gaps by going fakie, so try doing a 180 during you gap, it's actually pretty easy.
    And for 360s, think that your hips follows you shoulders, that follows your head. So turn your head first in the direction of the rotation, and the rest will follow !
    Can't wait to see your progress in 6 month ! Good luck !

    It was smart to wait for the update video. It allowed a lot of progression to be captured in one video. The ending was hilarious.

    I used to rollerblade when I was a teen, scrapping my last pair of USD Thrones around 2016. I am 34, so old, now and on the verge of ordering some new skates because of you. Fun thing to relearn and teach my son I guess.

    Very solid and nice produced video, love how u catch the atmosphere of blading and the bonds it creates - the progress in blading makes ur more confident in general and makes u think different over time, the exercise is great too without knowing - It's not the 90's anymore, but why not try to make it change in 2023! Agressive blading is dope, it's my 1 year of blading now and i'm 34 today and for sure gonna keep doing for a while as long possible.
    Great content! love to watch the next progress videos - u know u have to now ;)!

    For anyone new in any type of skateing I have only 1 advice: Baby steps until you feel comfortable, but still keep pushing even tho something is scary. Just don't try something way out for what you are capable of and get hurt, cause then you will stop progressing.

    This just took me back, sometimes you forget how fun and exhilarating the feeling of “getting” it, make your body operate in wheels, something it wasn’t designed for - and has to be learned đŸ•șđŸ»đŸ€—

    Good progression man ! If I may give you an advice, use your upper body more. Lift your arms when you grind, stand up a bit more and bend your knees more, it will help with the balance. I can’t wait to see your next progress !

    Old school skater here from the 90s-00s, this video just randomly popped up on my feed. This took me back to rehab days of old. I cannot believe you got to go to Woodward. The teenage me is very jealous.
    2 tips: With the 360s, 540's etc I always found it easier to leave the ground on 1 foot so the body started to spin slightly before leaving the ground. You may also find it easier to spin off your dominant foot (I'm assuming your right) so you'd be turning clockwise.
    With grinds, you need to keep your body more loose, lower to the ground. If sole grinding is what you're concentrating on, your sole foot is dominant with your front foot essentially just stabilising. The lower you are to the ledge/rail, the more stable you'll be.
    Unlucky with the nut shot. Keep it up!

    Watched your stuff for a while when it came up on my home page but first time I saw you got into blades, mad respect man, finally subbed just for the blade progression lol. Even as someone who has skateboarded for 15 years, rides bmx, snowskates, and snowboards, I've messed around on buddies blades over the years and those things have such a harsh learning curve but can be so steezy. Just some maybe helpful advice since the physics are pretty much shared, with pumping try to think of pushing your feet through the transition, so you'd be lowest at the peak and basically fully extended legs right as you leave the transition behind. It looks like you have the right idea and were on the right path with talking about how you push your weight into the ramp, it just looks like (from the first clip and the woodward miniramp clip) that you're so extended at the top you don't have much room to really extend your legs to get a good pump. That clip at 10:04 looked spot on, getting low going into the transition and extending through it. Honestly a bigger quarter might also feel more natural since there's more time and it would be steep enough to kind of force you to get low. Also big F for that rail sack, sadly welcome to the wonderful world of handrails lol.
