    Thanks, Josh! Certainly not ready to attempt it this winter, but looking forward to spring. Stay safe out there on the roads.

    I live car-free in rural central Sweden. Very cold winter here this year! Nothing hard about cycling in the cold at all! Ice is a bigger problem than proper cold. I recommend RevolutionRace pants. I use Zip offs. I like to open them up a little when I ride to let som condensation out. Condensation is enemy No1.

    • @EriebyCycle

      I’ll look into those pants. Thanks for the tip!

    8deg! That's crazy cold. I got down to 19 f this week. The Buffs are great bits of kit, I've not seen one with the wool but, but my summer one works great.
    Wool is the answer. I wear 2 jumpers for work or 3 on a long ride with a wind layer on top. Gloves I use wool mittens with a finger flap. One tip is old socks with the toes cut out around the wrist. Keeps the blood warm going to the hands.
    Ideally stay at home, but we gotta work. More power to you ✊

    Good episode, Josh!
    I like the hillbilly approach.
    Does not get that cold in southwest New Mexico. I get away with some knockoff Nike tights, a thin vest and a hi-viz bicycle windbreaker. Have a Smartwool beanie that'll fit under my helmet. My current gloves are a pair of$10 Wells Lamont leather and plastic fabric work gloves with a velcro wrist. It all works.
    Yeehaw!

    This is a really practical guide, Josh. Have tossed away cash over the years for some supposedly great winter bike gear and can't say I felt much warmer for it. Hands are the problem for me...long tapered fingers that freeze up as soon as it gets below 40F. I've got gloves like those 45NRTHs that are probably the best, but a little bulky for the STIl shifters on my bike. Have a great week, Josh. I'm taking strange comfort today in seeing that your doorbell transformer is skewed off level at 17 degrees in this overly perpendicular and plumb world of ours...

    • @EriebyCycle
      @EriebyCycle  Před 6 měsíci

      Thanks so much my friend. The gloves are a tad bulky, but I figure that’s the trade off for warmth.
      Funny thing about that doorbell transformer… the doorbell hasn’t worked in years. Nobody goes to the front door anyway.
      All the best, and thanks always for the kind words!

      Oh, by the way, how'd it go bringing out the rear derailleur on the Redline? I had an '88 Cannondale with a triple and it had the longest derailleur cage I'd ever seen. It just barely had enough capacity to keep the chain tensioned...

      @EriebyCycle  Před 6 měsíci

      @@mfosiecki I haven’t messed with it yet. That will be an ongoing project. I’m building a winter beater to use up some spare parts taking up space… and that’s living in the bike stand at the moment.

    I invested in a merino base layer from LL Bean, the midweight, and I pretty much live in it. I also got a pair of fleece-lined pants from there that have a bit of stretch and a wool-blend fleece pullover. All super useful. When I lived in the midwest I stopped riding at about 15 degrees F though so I never got to pogie level. You are so right about a wind shell layer and that it should allow a bit of ventilation. I once got a cold weather bike jacket on super sale at REI that is a soft shell jacket in front but lighter and breathable in back and it works surprisingly well. I guess the more you ride in extreme conditions the more it makes sense to invest in a handful of specialty garments but to experiment with what you have first.

      I’m glad to know my suspicions were correct. I’m going to have a look at the wool undies then. Thanks a bunch.

    Leather mittens with good insulation are the best. Leather does not conduct cold from the aluminum parts on the handle bar. I've tried many gloves over the years!

      Leather mittens make perfect sense.

    I say there isn't a perfect way to layer or dress. Subconsciously we all worry about feeling the cold prior to finding a rhythm and cadence that keeps us warm. It's definitely a trial an error thing. I'm not the type to spend big bucks on smart wool or merino wool. I use a polyester base then a cotton base as my number 2 layer. Then my winter clothes. Flexible warm winter clothing. Then my coat and regular winter outer layer. Then my soft shell rain suit that acts as a windbreaker. I de-layer as I sweat. It's a matter of preference for each person. Everyone rides differently. As long as your staying warm, thats all that matters. Most of us look like a homeless person if it's subfreezing temps with negative windchills. Lol

    • @EriebyCycle
      @EriebyCycle  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I agree. I find I worry about being cold on my way home and not my way in… even if I know it’s not bad outside. I don’t know why that is.
      I’m at the point in my life where I’ve been so cheap for so long I’m okay with buying stuff that’s expensive… especially since I’ve had no problems pissing money away on beer.

    • @billywood9717
      @billywood9717 Před 6 měsíci

      @EriebyCycle yea, same for me. I'm always colder otw home. I don't get it. I think most of us are motivated for the adventure that awaits. Also we are sweating as we get ready to go out. We shed layers at work. Our bodies acclimate to the climate there and we don't have the same psyche or mental preparation and fortitude otw home... idk?! It is weird though. Lol! Glad I'm not the only one.
      Let me know if you get the wool stuff and if it makes a difference. I just can't justify it when the temperature and weather change so much. 40s-50s for me the next 2 weeks. I'm all over the place as far as clothing goes. Lol
      Happy Sunday btw!

      @@billywood9717 yeah man!!!! Pissing rain Tuesday on. I don’t know what to do anymore.
      I’m not going to rush out and get any wool undies, but I suspect I’ll see if I can catch a clearance sale at the end of the season… because at the core, I’m still cheap. I’ll let you know how it plays out.
      Happy Sunday my friend!
