I can totally relate to this, except it was with the Christadelphians. Children were constantly taken outside to be smacked for making noise. The best families were judged on how quiet, whether they participated in hymns, prayers (and then not the member-only prayers) and they usually all wore matching homemade outfits and YES ties for the boys.

I recently took my two littles one to the hall since I woke up and realized it was nonsense. I felt like I was listening to someone droning on and on about stupid things. Then it hit me, this must be how my babies have felt as I raised them this way. Never again will they go through that. I felt like such a jerk. Poor kids. I got spanked a ton but I didn't whip my kids for making noise. They are children after all. One guy I knew used to blow into the face of his newborn when it would make baby noises. Never mind the little thing couldn't breathe....

This is heartbreaking to hear, I was also raised very strict under a strict faith Mennonite. I was raised on a leather strap but I could never use one on a child.

Some great points in this vid. The meetings did not take parenting and childrens needs into account, especially with bedtimes as you quite rightly pointed out. I drew so many moustaches and beards onto pictures in the watchtowers at meetings lol

Good for you for breaking the cycle of kingdumb hall child beating! I was a JW with an "unbelieving" wife, so I brought all 3 kids by myself. Never smacked them, but it was a great excuse to go to the back room and play with the kids, and ignore the drivel from the platform. :)

There's a law against smacking children in Sweden + a few other countries as well. Some contend it teaches children that violence is a way of solving problems. An elder once told me he thought those who held such an opinion "don't understand how children work".

My father made me sit on my hands and if I so much as whispered to my sister he would grab me by my ear and stand me in the aisle next to his seat whereby the brother with the roving microphone would have to try and get past me . All the other kids sniggered at me and I was mortified . We were controlled by our parents by fear . Borderline abuse I would now say . Oh the joys of been brought up in the “truth” in the 80s .

Somebody tell these idiots that children aren’t short adults and should not be punished for being normal. Goodness it has to be pure torture for JW kids to try and pay attention to people talking on and on about adult topics in adult language. The saddest part is that there is extreme peer pressure on parents to abuse their kids from other parents. If you don’t clobber your kids for wiggling or falling asleep the other moms with start talking about what a bad mother you are. That social pressure normally keeps kids legs and bottom bruised and mom and dad in line with what the group expects.

I have continued to study the bible with JWs for a couple of years now and I was searching incorrect teachings from the bible from JWs myself for awhile now. I have not yet been able to find anything they teach that does not comply with the bible. And I see many people make comments about shunning and that the watchtower is wrong and such. But can someone please show me from the BIBLE that JWs are wrong for shunning. I was raised as a JW and I have never heard of or seen a non dedicated BAPTISED JW be cut off or disfellowshiped. I have only seen the dedicated baptised get disfellowshiped when they were not repentant of thier sin or sins and would not change thier lifestyle in accordance with God's will. There examples in the bible that show those who have come to know Jehovah and his will and were dedicated servants of Jehovah and then became either appostates or unrepentant of thier sinfull ways and were cut off from among gods people. Please someone show me from the bible how the JW are not following scripture correctly. I cannot recall anyone from posts like these showing from THE BIBLE that JW's are incorrect. I have been trying to find some inaccuracy for a long time now. Thanks.

      Hello,
Where is the love and compassion in shunning?
I was also brought up as a JW. My father was an elder in a SW London congregation. As a family we stopped attending (I understand this is now called fading) after my father passed away when I was in my late teens.
My father did not Force my sister or I into baptism as he believed it was a step taken with a full heart and clear mind. However most of my contemporaries were baptised as children between the ages of 10 to 15 years. Of my contemporaries, by the time they reach their late teens early 20s approx 50% had been disfellowshipped and shunned. And some of the reasons for being disfellowshipped was simply for the silly things young people do during the difficult growing up period of your teens. Although we were never shunned (because we were not baptised), the hurt shunning inflicted on my friends is something that has stayed with me.
If you have not already done this please seek out The Australian royal commission into child sex abuse. See JW cases 29 and 54. Shunning is disused in detail, the bible principles and the human tragedy.
      All the best
      Jen
