An interesting region for you: I live in Western Austria, in a state called "Vorarlberg", right next to Liechtenstein. Exactly 100 years ago the local population voted about separating from the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, which collapsed during WW1, to join Switzerland. 80% voted yes, but the treaty of Saint-Germain didn't allow Vorarlberg to leave Austria, and also Switzerland didn't want to take the region, which made my state known under the name of "Kanton übrig", which translates to "canton leftover". Now, there aren't any big independence movements any longer, but the region transformed from a farmer's land to a economically stable state, with good industry, so i think we could support ourselves on our own, and i also think a voting could pass, if it was today

Hawaii actually has a somewhat large "independence movement". Some radicals want full independence which I do not think is possible. The conservatives however usualy want a "Nation within a Nation" like the Native American " Nations on the mainland.
If you look you can find many signs of an independence movement. There are sometimes Hawaiian sovereignty flags and bumper stickers, or "Keep Hawaii Hawaiian" bumper stickers which could be interpreted as independence as a Hawaiian nation.

Never heard of this and I'm South African, however.... I can see the idea of the Western Cape breaking away from the country. We are not as rich as the Guatengers, but I am pretty sure we will be fine considering Cape Town is growing exceptionally fast commercially. Its also our tourism capital of the country and plus, with all the whites moving and migrating towards the area, I'd say we have a decent chance sometime down the line as we try to regain our sense of cultural identity. But hey, anything can happen who knows. Future is unpredictable. Also, just to clarify as much as I love it down here in the western Cape, I am in no ways a DA supporter. I'm just straight up not. I know for a fact they will be the new fully governing body of the state, and I am not prepared personally to deal with that.
For non-South Africans reading this. DA is our strongest liberal democratic party. Our version of the Left. Will never support them. Ever. Won't see a vote from me any time soon.

There is a bit of potential complications in having the whole bioregion become one country, which is the political & ideological divide that has always been very present between the people in the more populated regions, and the more rural regions. It is well known that throughout both Canadian & US history, the more populated an area is, the more "liberal" and "democratic" it gets, whereas the more rural one gets, the more "conservative" and "republican" the population gets. This is VERY true for this region of North America. Especially east of the Cascades in Oregon & Washington, there is strong political & ideological divides in our people here. Likelihood is, those east of the Cascades would cause major issues for a united, independent Cascadia incorporating them into itself for those differences. They most likely would be very angry & refuse to accept anything of it unless they get given back to the US in all likelihood. People tend to completely forget about that human aspect of such a concept.
Additionally, in taking it very seriously, it'd be an all out nightmare logistically too, especially in regards to the fact most people at least in the US seem to carry this dedicated belief that any place seceding into it's own fully sovereign nation would somehow carry all the same laws, politics & government as the country they cede from, in this case, the US. But that's not how that works at all. In fact you'd be creating your own government, your own constitution, laws, etc, etc from scratch once you're freshly birthed as a newborn sovereign nation. The reason why this a incredibly problematic and bad for a new nation is that it shows & means people will still be holding tightly to their beliefs & political stances they held while in the other country before having became this new country. That'd likely cause people to implement the very same policies, documents, laws, etc into place as the prior country they WERE in, and people would likely still have the same corrupted greed taking up the new office in the new country. I mean think about it also like this: When you secede and become your own fully autonomous, independent, sovereign nation... does it mean you no longer have any currency and you need to invent it? And if so, does that mean any & all debts the provinces & states had immediately become null & void and disappear from existence as a result of it? My assumption is a definite yes, but I am fully unsure of it. As I said, my ASSUMPTION would be yes. Now if the answer is the latter part of that question is NO, then... the country would instantly begin with massive BILLIONS of dollars in debt from the corrupt governors & politicians we had in what once was our states when a part of the US. So... how the hell would the newly birthed government and the country's people handle & deal with that? You know? It's all so incredibly odd, wild, complex & deeply convoluted...

    Not quite.
Greenland was colonized by settlers mainly from Iceland and Norway.
However that settlement died out with time, but the claim to those lands stayed with the Kingdom of Norway even as Norway entered a personal union with the King of Denmark.
When Norway was ceded to Sweden in 1814 (after the defeat of Napoleon) Greenland, Iceland and the Faero Islands stayed under Danish rule while Norway didn't.
So they where moved from being a part of the Norwegian Kingdom to a part of the *Danish* Kingdom.

There are a lot of independentist movements in Italy, and since the situation is going downhill pretty fast, some stuff may happen in the next decades.
    1. Veneto and Padania (that you already covered)
    2. Sardinia, the island on the left of Italy. There have been strong independentist movements and even terrorist attacks in the last, and the feeling for indipendence continues today
    3. Milan, it is a city, but It grows like 6 times faster than the rest of the country. Some people suggest more indipendence (like Macau or Hong Kong).
    4. South Tyrol: the northern part of the "Trentino-Alto Adige" region. They are the strongest indipendentists, they used to do terrorist attacks in the past, they are ethnically Austrian and speak German better than they speak Italian.
    5. Sicily: the triangle island on the south. The indipendentism is very weak today, but still exists.
    6. Southern Italy: just like for northern Italy, southern Italy is witnessing a slow rise in indipendentism

@@lukeporras1288 -- No, it in no way "stands to reason" that states "fully retain" a power to secede. A state cannot "retain" something it never possessed. Moreover, except for the original 13 colonies, all other states were quite literally created by the Federal Government (through organization, purchase or annexation) and therefore remain creatures/creations of the Federal Government.
And finally, NO state can deprive any of its inhabitants of their US citizenship against their will. Thetefore, if any state even attempted to secede, the US military has every right to invade to protect the rights of such citizens -- even if there were just one or two lonely American citizens remaining who opposed secession. Their rights as US citizens take top precedent -- and so say the SCOTUS "swamp monkeys," as you so insultingly refer.
You southerners just really need to get over it. You LOST the rebellion in 1865, and you can no longer enslave and persecute black people as you so ardently fought to do so. Just get over it already. 😒

The funniest part of this whole thing is that you think I'm a 'southerner'. If anything, my roots are actually in the North and from immigrants who came out west.
That aside, you make a great point; the general government did not create the original 13 states (or 14, counting Vermont). It was those states who *created* the federal government. In ratifying the Constitution they delegated certain explicit powers *to* the federal government and undertook restrictions on their own. Thus, the states are the ones who hold ultimate sovereignty, only limited by a voluntarily entered compact. This is evident in Article V, where any amendments to the constitution must be ratified by at least 3/4 of the states. If the states really wanted to for whatever reason, they could even dissolve the entire Union via amendment without Congress having a single say.
On top of this we have the Equal Footing doctrine, which guarantees newer states will be "on an equal footing with the original States in all respects whatever." I believe it is clear that 'all respects' includes the same level of independence and sovereignty.
But what it really comes down to is the principle of self governance. If the people of a state at large *acceded* to admittance into the Union -- the Constitution, a compact of states -- they hold the right to *secede* from it as well. The Declaration of Independence expresses the act of secession, and not even in the context of a federation. The people of the several states *never* forfeited that right and power through the adoption of the Constitution. By the principle expressed in the tenth amendment, they automatically retain that power as sovereign peoples; sovereign states.
But now, knowing people's reactions, you will either walk away laughing or you will leave a like and go 'Oh yEah TeXaSSss LOL'
