Avalanche Lose in Shoot Out to Rangers. MacKinnon Streak Ends, But Should It Have?

- The Colorado Avalanche and New York Rangers went toe to toe Thursday night, and then let a shoot-out decide the winner.
A great game from start to finish saw the Avalanche drop the extra point in the shoot-out, and to add salt in the wound, Nathan MacKinnon's two streaks came to an end, but not without some controversy surrounding an assist he was initially given but was then taken away.
There was also a questionable goal from the Rangers that Jared Bednar challenged but was not overturned. Should it have been?

Ranger fan here I don't know what the Avs schedule was like in the last couple of weeks but the Rangers have played a lot of hockey and they were gassed after the 2nd period. It didn't help having two starting D-men out of the lineup and one of them was their captain. Even the guy that came back struggled it was his first game back from a gruesome looking injury and there is no way he was 100% he's a tough kid. I thought it was an awesome game and so much fun to watch and all Rangers fans liked Georgiev it's nice to see him start on a good team. I would love a cup final between these two teams each period would be so fast and back and forth it would be great for the sport.
As an older fan, I feel proud of Mac for having such an incredible season. It’s a great time to be an Avs fan!
I think because it hit his hand, and then off his pants made it a valid play. Also no distinct redirecting motion with the glove. The contact with the glove was incidental. I think the bounce off the pants counted as where the pass took place, not the glove. It was worth a try to overturn it. There was plenty of time left in the game. Sucks losing 2 in a row with only 9 games left. We need to solidify home ice in the playoffs. We need chu chu back. Still doable, lets go!
My thoughts exactly the guy took a hard shot and it bounced off the player standing in front of the net it was a bad break for the Avs because it went right to Kreider for an easy goal.
Bummed more by the streak ending than the loss (and that's a bit upside down I know) but *annoyed as hell* that there were so many Rangers fans in that crowd. And the puck hit that glove - the impact is obvious.
Also severely annoyed with opposing fans being so loud in the arena. I want major revenge.
Buy more tickets then. There wouldnt of been so many rangers fans if avs fan didn't sell their tickets
And the NYR fans in the barn thing, always been that way...back 20 years ago when I first moved to CO it was that way. Lots of AVS season ticket holders grew up Rangers fans, and go back to their roots when the two teams play. I knew a few that did that. Lots of Coloradans came from the North East. SO the older generation of families are Fans of other teams...its their kids that are born AVS fans.
@@Rangerfan41 Perhaps you forget the Colorado Rockies NHL team, '76 to '82. Old guy here, raised in Colorado. Lots of Coloradans....from Colorado.
I didnt forget. But most of those fans are not around anymore. The bulk of the AVS season ticket holders and fans are the generation after the Rockies...and more than half of CO is from other than Co. Only 42% of Coloradoans were born there. @@matambale

When i saw on the schedule Pens, Habs and Rags in 3 straight games i had a funny suspicion Macks streak would end somewhere in there. The Eastern conference teams always play a crazy defensive/goaltending game against us for some reason.

Yes, the Rangers are a good team. At least the Avs got a point.
They are both great teams the Avs coach is great and they know how to win in the playoffs I have no idea about the Rangers but the coach has proven his system can win in the playoffs. I hope that matchup is the cup final it would be a great series and it would be good for the sport.
Before I even watch the video I’m just gonna say if someone went back through all the games in that gretz 40 home point streak season there will UNDOUBTEDLY be some generous assists given. Mack deserves this. In this age 35 is still some thing to be proud of but damn if it doesn’t hurt to be so close and have the determining factor be that everything is so closely scrutinized today for the purpose of sports betting and what not. NHL needs to change that score ruling and rightly give MacKinnon an assist.
Was at the game and didn't have commentary, but the general feeling in the stands was "someone in a video room somewhere really has it out for the Avs" between the not-hand pass and the not-Mack assist. Kinda killed the vibes of what otherwise felt like a very awesome playoff-like game
We Ranger fans have had the same feeling often so speak to the people in Toronto. There were obvious fouls that were never called. We started to feel that there was obvious bias against us.
Both calls were correct.
Whilst I want Nate to have the assist and carry on (what a story it’s been already)
Do we think not only was there pressure on Nate but actually the whole team to get him past the great one? Does this allow the team to focus more? Not that they weren’t already but it surely must’ve been a distraction on some level!
That being said if they do decide to award the assist I’ll be cheering for Nate to break the record
This is the bright side I am trying to convince myself of now that the streak has ended! Who knows but does it make me feel better about it all, yes it does. LFG, get home ice and a 2nd cup for this amazingly talented core of Avs players we are so blessed to have!

If anything, they’ll make sure he doesn’t. They don’t want anyone touching their precious Gretzky’s record.
The gretzky homerism is definitrly real today. But the rule still says on own goals they may award assists. So this is 100% just bias from whoever recordedit
They can't because the rule is clearly, if it's an own goal there are no assists awarded and the goal goes to the last person to touch the puck. Do you want to change the rule or something? It's a weird rule though but for him to get an assist they would have to actually change the rulebook so I don't get this nonsense about giving him an assist.

There's a difference betweem accidental goals and own goals it's pretty simple no one is out to get him that's kind of silly. The rule is weird though the guys who caused the own goal should get assists only if they had a part in causing it and if they didn't you don't award assists, there I fixed it. I was hoping he would get it records are meant to be broken that's sports.

Guys - It wasn't a handpass by any definition
(a) Play shall be stopped and a last play face-off shall occur anytime a player (except the goalkeeper) closes his hand on the puck and does not immediately drop the puck to the ice.
(b) A player or goalkeeper shall not be allowed to “bat” the puck in the air, or push it along the ice with his hand, directly to a teammate unless the “hand pass” has been initiated and completed in his defending zone, in which case play shall be allowed to continue. If the “hand pass” occurs in the neutral or attacking zone, a stoppage of play will occur and a face-off will take place according to last play face-off rules provided no territorial advantage has been gained.
No goal can be scored as a result of the puck being propelled by the hand of an attacking player regardless if the puck enters the goal directly from the hand or deflects off of any player prior to entering the goal.
Half of these people don't know what a hand pass is.

The refs played too loose with their calls tonight. Calling weaker calls but missing obvious calls. Especially towards the end.

@@matambale The best defensive teams in the NHL have slowed Mackinnon down this year If you disagree, you're just being a fanboy and not watching the games. Mikko and Makar aren't the factors they were in the past either. Vegas lines 2 to 4 will be superior and they have much better reliable goaltending.. Keep thinking the 7-0 game was a fluke

I don't agree and I am a Ranger fan so I have no bias when there are really good teams you never know and usually there's one team that everybody says will lose in the first round and there's a big upset.
This episode should had been called “ Nate Dog Home Point Streak Ends”. This game was boring for the first 39 minutes of the game with no scoring from either team. It felt more like a soccer game than a hockey game. It is sad that Chris actually thought that Vincent Trockheck had touched the puck with his hand on the Rangers Power Play goal. But Chris saying that Mackinnon deserves an assist on the Own Goal by the Rangers. The Avalanche also had a OWN Goal with the Kakko goal that tied the game 1-1. Like Kyle said be happy that streak is over and say Awesome Sauce like I do. Ahahaha
Lol. A game is not boring because goals aren't being scored. If you find a scoreless game boring, you don't appreciate hockey. This was a great game, felt like playoffs.
