Review ~ Lowrance Hook Series Sonar

  • I get a lot of viewers asking why I have a Lowrance Hook 7 on my front deck when I already have an HDS 9 Touch - there are some very specific reasons related to fishing for bass offshore that I've installed that fish finder on the bow. It is very much related to using the down scan to target fish more specifically and efficiently
    Let me know if you have any questions and what your experience with these units is. Here's a link for more details www.tacklewarehouse.com/Lowran...

    Great review. I'm getting two of these units, one on front and one on back of my boat. They are on sale right now for $299 and all I have right now is a 10+ year old hummingbird with nothing extra on it.

    THANKS for the info and insight! I bought one of these for my kayak (no trolling motor interference LOL) but have yet to use it because...well...I live in NJ and the Spring has turned out to be an extension of Winter so far. Soon though...very soon. Tight lines!

    in addition to the screen spray, you can get some laptop screen protectors for dirt cheap off eBay, & cut them to fit all of your units. Always good to have that extra layer of security against an errant treble swipe, etc...

    Great video I'm looking to purchase the hook 7, my question is how you have The transducer mounted, I talked to a rep at lowrance they told me these units transducers must go in The rear

  • @fishsnatcherstv6292
    @fishsnatcherstv6292 Před 7 lety +1

    It may cost a few bucks, but you should try a bit of dyna-mat between the transducer and the trolling motor. That stuff is amazing with killing vibration transfer. I have t used it for that application if it may really help with the feedback of it is caused by vibrations.
    Great video, thanks for the advice!

    I will be using a Hook 7 on the front deck for most of 2021. I’m curious if you tried using the universal transducer in your Minn Kota, or did you strictly rely on the Lowrance transducer shown in the video? It’s my understanding that the universal transducer will function in 2D and I’m hoping that will be adequate for my needs this year. Your thoughts and comments will be greatly appreciated.

    • @mikeybalzz
      @mikeybalzz  Před 3 lety

      you should be fine with basic 2d, i just liked the down scan for very specific stuff. i had my other HDS unit plugged into the universal transducer running 2d and it worked perfect.

      It seems you respond to every inquiry. You have in my case and I really appreciate your efforts to do so. I will try using the universal transducer and let you know how it works out. In the meantime, I wish the best for you and your website.

    When you say 10-20 ft space from the broadband sonar, what's the difference in the cone space with downscan? And are you talking about 10-20 ft side to side or front to back? I'm still trying to learn how to locate structure after seeing it on a scan

    • @muddpuppy07
      @muddpuppy07 Před 7 lety

      Kristian Cox standard 2d pretty much is equal distance down to equal distance out each side.
      down scan looks straight down not out.
      think of it like a fan tail vs a cone.

    • @kristiancox3
      @kristiancox3 Před 7 lety

      Bryan Cole thanks that helps. But I still don't understand if he has DI and SI, why he would need that? Wouldn't DI do the same thing for him

    • @muddpuppy07
      @muddpuppy07 Před 7 lety

      Di and si are two different things and the hook 7 does not have si. SI looks down and out giving you a picture of the bottom as you move forward. Side imaging is great for finding structure. Down imaging is good for picking apart that structure.

    • @mikeybalzz
      @mikeybalzz  Před 7 lety

      down imagaing is high frequency scanning in the straight down mode. structure scan gives you the side imaging but on the front it will create interferece with other units

  • @jbersoscike
    @jbersoscike Před 7 lety

    I have the hook 7 and I love it but it seems like my old elite was better. Do u have any tips on settings for this particular unit? , 455 vs 800 kHz and such.

    • @muddpuppy07
      @muddpuppy07 Před 7 lety

      jbersoscike 455hz is a good general view and shallow water. 800hz is good for greater detail but in a smaller area best used for deeper water say 15'+.

    I have the hook 5 di on my triton tr19. But I always seem to have a lot of interference and no clear picture. Any tips on where the transducer should be mounted on the transom?

    • @mikeybalzz
      @mikeybalzz  Před 6 lety

      never ran one on my dash bud - always had one on the trolling motor. general practice though would be to put it about a foot or so to the driver's side of the motor just avoide putting it behind any sort of rib or transition in your hull. if you do get noise (as i've gotten a bit with it being on the trolling motor) you can increase noise reduction in the settings as well as increase surface clarity.

    • @Bsmitty90
      @Bsmitty90 Před 6 lety

      mikeybalzz fishing thanks for the reply man. My transom has two step downs. I have the ducer mounted on the transom itself above a flat part of the bottom of the hull. I'll try moving it down to the next step and see if it helps. And I'll try the settings also.

    • @janinealioto5289

      mikeybalzz fishing ok. So for now, lets start with sensitivity and target separation. On my downscan, I know this is an entry level piece of equipment. That said, should I leave my sensitivity, contrast, and color line on “auto”? The same could be asked for my 2d sonar setting. Auto? The sonar of course is CHIRP. Where should the HZ bet set on that? And for downscan, which HZ to you use? Thanks Mikey.

    What kind of mount is that Hook7 attached to?

  • @sweetsiebug
    @sweetsiebug Před 7 lety

    Why not just. Use hds 9 on the trolling motor using the hdi transducer and a 7 to 9 pin adapter why the hook when a hds 9 does same thing is there something I'm missing

    • @mikeybalzz
      @mikeybalzz  Před 7 lety +1

      couple reasons, i guess i need to be more detailed in the vid. 1st on the 9 i run my map and either side scan or downscan off the back transducer to see if stuff is moving around under the boat. also, before i scored the good graphs all i was running was 2 elite 5's and i loved them. i've found that the units with just downscan (like the elites and the hooks) read a little differently than the structure scan on the hds units. for instance some of our shell bars won't pick up with the down scan on the hds units where as with the hook units you see another layer coming off the bottom. also i've found the 2 units just read slightly differently. hard to explain but i use the hds view and the hook view and sort of make some assumptions in my head based on the 2 since i get a little different read. there are probably better ways to do it but this is the way it's worked best for me. if i could afford a second hds 9 up front and do what you're talking about that'd probably be better, i just had to get it as right as i could with the budget.

      Can't remember of my head I think it's like 455 or 355 but the trolling motor messes with it a lot i think that's the problem

    • @mikeybalzz
      @mikeybalzz  Před 7 lety

      yeah not gonna lie same setting i'm using 455. using some kind of buffer in between the transducer and trolley helps. try varying your trolling motor speeds too, you'll find some speeds give interference and some don't.
