It's such a shame these movies are bad too, because it's so obvious Andrew Garfield loves being and playing Spider-Man. He has such a passion for it and the writing just does him so dirty.

I think the worst offense of this movie is giving some convoluted story with Peter's parents.
The whole point of Peter Parker is that he's basically "what if ANYONE got spider powers?", he just happened to get that bite. In spite of that normality, it makes Peter more compelling.
Now he's just another "special" hero all along...

“The whole point of Peter Parker is “what if anyone got spider powers?”.”
Yeah, except Peter is not “anyone”, he is a super genius who invented his web shooters from a pile of garbage. And that’s not just a minor detail, a huge part of his career as Spider-Man relies on his incredible intelligence. This is why I hate this whole argument that Peter is supposed to be relatable, just a normal school student, when he is clearly not. Even comics has moved away from this premise a long time ago. The only version where this works is Raimi movies, where they gave him organic webs and toned down his intellect.

    • @DigitalXAddict
      @DigitalXAddict Před rokem +9

@@diehard7517 Exactly!! And there is even more than most people think of Peter. Like the situation of him being bullied in school...that's...not as straightforward as people make it out to be. He was bullied, yes, but he literally stood up for others, and he had friends and some girls even had a crush on him. He wasn't the outcast loser, just someone who was confronted by Flash time and time again. (Heck at the end of their HS years, Flash's girlfriend at the time, Liz, ditched him for Peter, but Peter didn't want her lol)
There are so many reinterpretations of the franchise in the Raimi movies, but people think those are "the original"...
Peter Parker aka Spider-Man in his younger years is about making dumb mistakes and learning from them.
This is why I don't get the complaint of Lonart about the chocolate milk. This scene describes best how Spideys early years went by. A lot of pretty dumb decisions. Pretty harmful decisions.
Only in later years he got better at actually doing the right thing...or atleast, having his mind at the right place (Another Day wasn't his fault, he was forced into this dilemma...)
Sorry for the rant. Just a "Yeah, you're absolutely right!" from me :)

With exception of the Peter parents plot, I enjoy the film, specially due to Garfield and Stone amazing acting. I like how Gwen in this version is not just love interest for Peter, she also scientist like him and use her knowloge to help Peter in situations. She goes in direction of danger rather than run away from it. As for Garfield I thought he was better Spider Man than Tobey Maguire. Nothing against him, but the Raimi film felt they focus way to much on showing Peter as "nerd loser" and forgot other aspects of the character.
Garfield feels much more close to Peter after AMS 3 or 4 when he started to become more confident chaming. Instead of being pushed around by others, he just stands up and makes fun of his bullies. Instead of been reject by girls he start to develop relationship with others ladies. This are the aspect that Garfield nailed as Peter, as well the jokey sense of humor Spider Man, creating nice balance between the two identities. His bad temper didn't bother me since, even in the comics, Peter did had moments of frustration and anger (one the best exemple is in one my favorite Spider Man stories, "If This be my Destiny...", when looks like Peter won't be able to save the life of his aunt, we have panel of Peter breaking a table in anger for the idea of not being able to save the woman who raised him)

I feel like this movie put too much time and focus into this, like his reason for fighting OTHER criminals is revenge, and that's not the case with Tobey. In his movie I alway interpreted that he got the dude who killed Uncle Ben for revenge and that was it, and a bit of time later he donned the costume because he now understood that he had a responsibility, not because he was angry.

I dont think ben pulling out th qquote out seems unreasonable for him either, thois peter is clearly very stubbern, as is ben, and i think ben worries enough to hammer things into him, topull that quote more often. I think it shows good enough a preeistence good but clashing relationship of care. This ben isnt perfect either, and frustrated wrongly that time.
It just a weird nitpick when it does a good job howing th dynamic very well and that ben i human too, but worried, and wants to hammer that don an is justifid, but not there, and their last words are a miscommunication. That sad, that would haunt peter.
Dramatic that is thm being more human and that , it dosnt have to make logical sense, bcaus it maks dramatic sense, An people arent logical, this is more emotional peronally , which works better in enough apects for me. .

In defense of Peter and Ben arguing scene: the movie clearly shows that they have a bit of tension between each other, which comes from the fact that Ben doesn’t really know how to be a father to him. This version of Peter was also shown to be more of an angsty teenager rather than the shy nerd like in the Raimi trilogy or the original comics, which also makes harder for Ben to connect with him. So, this scene comes off like them finally exploding at each other.

Honstly, it makes it probably hit harer that they have th same dynamic of uncaring and ben i understan why he is worried an tries to hammer probably regulary that home to keep him from trouble. And peter being more angsty, And blowing that over .
I think its a great idea to have the lat bit not a making sense conflict that is clear , but a miscommunication :( , also i think it makes sense that this more human ben is frustrated an shouting, than the original.
It just difernent, becaus ben is mor frustrated and pter more edgy and, i thig that thy both care but thaat the lat words are misundrstandings, is dramatic a better way to haunt peter, and him trying to fingd th responsibility, which he does step by step.
I genuinly like it in a lot of aspect more, why it haunts peter, why ben is more easy to shout that, and still a good parent, and last words, it probably haiunts more when it micommunication. I jut felt that more. An the milk is, a consequence overlooking one crime that presumely is einsure anyways, out of pettyness, thats honestly campy enough to still be good.

I think the ASM films have some undeniably iffy choices (particularly Harry Osborn and Peter's mysterious parents), but I just really love this version of Peter and Gwen as characters so much more than any other film's Peter Parker and his love interests. ASM's Peter feels more real since he feels less cartoonish like how Tom and Tobey hammed up the "aw shucks" pureheart/goofball routine. Andrew played the character with moments of humor and heart too but it felt more realistic to me.
Gwen and Peter actually have time devoted to showing why they love each other. It helps that they support each other's goals and have cute moments together. I love the Raimi movies, but the romance is 90% pining and not understanding each other. The MCU Peter and Michelle develop a relationship between movies and we only see fragments of the chemistry which is kind of a shame. With Gwen though she felt more like his partner in fighting crime. Her and Peter's dynamic is what makes my opinion so high of the movies cause Andrew and Emma in those roles were great.

It’s a constant motif in the film and I don’t understand how like every critic bar a few misses or purposefully ignores it 💀. It’s quite literally the whole basis behind his relationship with dr Connors AND captain Stacy in the movie.
Also for the whole “he becomes spider man out of revenge” part, not only does this tie into the movies main themes (he doesn’t become spider man until the bridge scene which tied back to the fatherhood motif and learning to make sure others don’t go through the pain he did instead of enacting revenge) but it’s also the exact same reason some of the other most popular iterations of the character don the suit. Only difference is this movie is a bit less subtle about it.

They could so easily fix the revenge thing and really use it to help solidify Peters full transformation into Spider-Man. Imagine he catches Bens killer, he's ready to kill this guy so easily, remembers Bens words and then gives him to the police, still satisfying his revenge need and even giving him a reason to stop being spidey, until the dinner with Captain Stacey. The argument happens as normal except there's some more give and take with Peter going "well he caught my uncles killer, I think that's a good thing" trying to justify his own antics while making a legitimate case for a good Samaritan defense of spidey. Captain would respond with something like "yeah sure, and I'm happy he did, but so many other dudes got released because this guy went around screwing up our investigations and making things inadmissible in court" causing peter to reconsider has past actions and worry if he did make the right choice, until the bridge scene where he fully embraces bens words and the ideal of the good Samaritan hero. Maybe later he goes to captain Stacey again wanting to learn more about law enforcement to enhance spideys rep and effectiveness while also finding a pseudo father figure in Stacey. It also gives reason to make Stacey figure out he's spidey, and maybe if they get close enough it makes the end where he trust Pete to stop lizard more satisfying and especially in his death. Wouldn't it hit harder if Pete had great admiration and respect for Stacey and even a bond with him in the movie, only to then finally be able to share his secret with him just in time for his death?

Peter is incomplete because of the death of these parents. Because of this death (and also because his only friend Harry abandoned him but since it's in tasm2, it doesn't count), Peter isolated himself from the others and logically became selfish (even though we feel that he has a good side represented by the scene where he saves the boy intimidated by Flash). Curt is in the same situation: because of his feeling of being incomplete due to his disability, he became obsessed with research and made a pact with the devil with Oscorp (while we feel that he has a philanthropic purpose but he got lost)
    The attaché case of Peter's father represents a Pandora's box for the characters: instead of solving their problems as they believe, it will aggravate them. Peter believes that by knowing the reason why these parents abandoned him and by continuing his father's research, he will become complete when in fact no, he will neglect those who raised him causing Uncle Ben's death;
Curt believes that the lizard formula will allow all disabled people including him to get better, while in fact, Oscorp will steal his product to help Norman Osborn and that he himself will become a monster not caring about human life. Instead of questioning each other, the two will continue in their self-destructive ways:
Peter is going on a quest for revenge and Curt is going to want to turn the population of NY into lizards.
Except that only one thing separates the two men: Curt is alone while Peter is not. .
Gwen, who saw her good side when he defended the boy is gradually falling in love with him, Aunt May sees that her nephew is in crisis and is trying to help him and of course, Captain Stacy, who in the dinner scene, makes Peter aware of these mistakes and the consequences they can have. His quest for revenge motivated by his suffering made him move away from the ideal of his father and his uncle. So Peter changes from that moment on: he really opens up to Gwen as he had never opened up to anyone since his father's death and then helps innocent people. Here are the two things that make Peter complete: Gwen but also being Spiderman, helping others. That's why he doesn't go back in his quest for revenge after the breakup: it wasn't Gwen who motivated him to become better, it was by becoming better that he managed to get into a relationship with Gwen.

The Amazing Spiderman 2 has a totally different story: where in the 1st, Peter only made bad choices and took the consequences in his face here, he only makes good choices which despite everything, also have negative consequences. He saves Max and tells him that he is important, Max becomes obsessed with Spiderman. He tries to prevent Max from killing people in Times Square, Max feels betrayed and becomes Electro. He does not give his blood to Harry who is his friend so as not to create a second lizard, Harry injects himself with a spider serum and becomes nasty. Peter separates from Gwen so as not to put her in danger, there is no point, their love is too strong, they get back together for a few moments and then she dies killed by the Green Jester. So Spider Man appears as a modern Sisyphus: despite all these efforts to protect everyone, he does not succeed and the stone falls.
Because the life of a superhero is hard. But the film, instead of staying on this negative message, makes us understand thanks to the Rhino scene that even if it's hard, there are reasons to struggle. Spiderman inspired this kid to do the right thing and that's what a hero is for.
The message of the film is therefore to say that despite all the suffering, the consequences that super heroism can garner, we must not give up.

I didn't like the relationship between this Peter, Uncle Ben, and Aunt May. In Toby's version, they all genuinely cared, loved, and put eachother before the other person. Aunt May was compassionate and forgiving even after Peter's confession. She always grounds him in hope and sacrifice. In this version, Aunt May just wants her organic milk and was thankful when she got it in the end. Toby's Peter always had a loved one encourage him, lift him up, and keep him honest and good. That resonates so much with me as a 47 year old now. We all need that. Even Superheroes.

    TASM1 Rebuttal
Given it’s been a… while since this video was made, I’m not sure you’ll see this comment, but I did want to respond to a few of the talking points you had.
Uncle Ben’s Murder: I’ll admit the “how dare you” line from Ben feels oddly-placed, when previous scenes have implied that Richard was an irresponsible person to leave their son in Ben and May’s hands, but compared to the Raimi films I feel like there’s a more tragic throughline between Peter storming out on Ben in a harsh manner, and Ben being shot.
There isn’t a whole lot of reason why Ben would want to stop the thief, other than a shopowner just yelling to “stop” the guy, but I think it’s much sadder that Ben went out to try to apologize and make amends with Peter before he got shot, whereas in the original films it just sort of “happened” off-screen.
Spider-Man’s Change of Heart: It certainly wouldn’t have hurt to have had a scene later where Spidey finds the thief and takes a moral high road, but I think you skipped over a really important scene directly after the dinner at Stacey’s (when Peter gets chewed out by Capt. George for how Spidey is only doing his work out of a vendetta). The bridge attack with the Lizard is a moment when Peter has to put stopping a bad guy on hold to rescue folks from a burning car, and in the process of taking the time to present a “friendly” face to the captive child in the car, pulling him out of there, and using his webs + super-strength to make it back to the bridge, it provides him the first opportunity to showcase his skills in saving people.
The scene directly afterwards, with Peter looking back on his mask at home, I think really shows how Peter has a crisis of purpose from that moment, deciding to put the vendetta behind him because the threat of the Lizard (and the people he puts in danger) have become more important than just himself. In a way, moving on from his uncle’s killer is a good reflection of that growth, even if the guy IS still dangerous in the city.
The Lizard: …okay, in hindsight, there should have been more scenes with Ifans to reflect his spiral into the insane plot he works on later, BUUUT I do think most of his early scenes do a good job of showing a bitterness towards the loss of his arm, and how he feels a bit “lesser” because of it. Whereas Oscorp’s representatives are simply trying to rush the product out to save their CEO, I could argue Connors is trying to experiment on the DNA sample out of a misguided sense that he’s going to truly “help” people like himself, who hate their own imperfections, despite the serum screwing with his brain to make him go down this path.
I wish there were more moments about him lashing out at Peter for Richard’s “irresponsibility” in leaving their shared project early, or to hint that he wants to fix others with the serum, but what can you do.
It’s not perfect, but TASM1 is my favorite (live-action) Spider-Man movie. I think it’s got great action scenes, some really touching emotional moments, a compelling take on a more emotionally volatile Spider-Man, a lot of things I don’t find in later offerings. Your video definitely opened my eyes to some flaws in the writing, despite that.

Its such an oversimplification to say Ben died for "chocolate milk". He didnt die for that, he died because peter was denied the milk by a douchebag clerk and so when he left the guy behind him took moneout of the drawer and threw peter his milk. BUT. When the douchebag clerk asks for help peter turns the clerks words on him, "its not my policy." The robber runs away with free beer and maybe $100 but in running away he trips and a gun flies out in front of Ben who is looking for Peter. Hearing shouting "somebody stop that guy" in the background, Ben jumps to take the gun because he doesnt know why the man is running, in which the harmless robber turns into a murdered when he tryies to take his gun, he fires into Ben's chest and runs away. This teaches Peter that if he wouldve done the right thing, although petty theft is seemingly harmless, could save a life. It really infuriates me that you keep going back to the "chocolate milk" argument. I really love this movie and i grew up with it just as much as the raimi movies.

I hate how The Amazing Spider-Man is unnecessarily cruel to Peter. In the 2000's movies, Uncle Ben died because of Peter's actions, thus leading him to learn that "with great powers, come great responsibilities." In the Amazing one, Uncle Ben dies because he sees a gun coming out of the pocket of this guy that tripped and immediately jumps at it, when he had absolutely no way of knowing whether that guy was a criminal or just a civilian! He died for nothing, and the movie even forgets that he did after the halfway mark!
Edit: I'm so glad you talked about the robber being a bro to Peter. That's something I rarely, if ever, see anyone talking about in these reviews. The guy had a gun, Peter was just finding out about his powers, he was in a mentally vulnerable state, he just tried to do charity before buying the chocolate milk and the clerk was a jerk to him, and as a normal teenager at that point, it wasn't his responsibility to stop a criminal! At that time, he was just a kid tryin to cool down, who ended up at the wrong place, at the wrong time.

The fact that people are still looking for ways to hate this movie in 2022 baffles me. So many of the "problems" or "issues" here can be summarized as nitpicks that can easily be explained. "the revenge plotline was dropped". Yeah, obviously, because he no longer cares when he realizes it's not the right thing to do. Even tries to dismiss the dinner scene, the most pivotal moment in the movie for Peter's character, as minor and not a good way to drop the revenge plotline. Wow. "He has no relation to Peter". First off, I find it a tiny bit silly to think EVERY villain should have a deep connection to the main character. It's better when there is a connection, but still. Second, the whole movie is a bout Peter looking for a father figure. Heck, the opening scene establishes this theme by being a metaphor of LOOKING FOR HIS DAD. If you can analyze and nitpick a movie enough to find all these things, then explain to me why you can't even figure out that the connection between him and Connors is that he sees him as the father he never had. I swear some youtubers do their best to pretend like they analyze the movie and give it a genuine shot but they don't. "uncle Ben getting mad over this is silly". How about the fact that Peter broke the basketball backboard HOURS before this happens. And Ben is even more insulted when he realizes Peter hung up on him on purpose. He's not mad over the fact that May had to walk alone, he's mad over Peter not keeping a promise. I could go on and on. Not understanding the Lizard's plan too? Seriously? The guy's a scientist who wishes to help people. He sees turning everyone into giant lizards as a way to make everyone stronger and save them from disabilities and- God, am I really explaining stuff that is directly explained in the movie with an inner monologue by the villain himself?
I can't take this seriously, I'm sorry. Either your standards are enormously high for everything so anything that's decent or "good" turns into "bador you did not give this movie a fair chance at all, IMO. I don't hate you at all, I'm just disappointed.

What is probably my biggest issue with this movie is the amount of time Peter spends trying to find and punish the murderer rather than himself. When he finds out that Uncle Ben died because HE let the thief go, the target of his anger should shift from the thief to himself. That's the entire point of Spider-Man's character. Here, he finds out about the tragic coincidence immediately after the murder, but STILL keeps pursuing the thief, for like WEEKS, with a clearly homicidal rage. And his shift to heroism comes from saving some random kid. Like, what? Why? Why is Uncle Ben even there in the first place? The plot would have worked the same if Peter had simply begun to beat up bullies and criminals out of spite - having been bullied himself - only to be turned to heroism by the experience of saving the kid. The death of Uncle Ben and the twist of fate about the murderer's identity are completely useless.

The whole “not choice, responsibility scene” is ripped straight from the Ultimate Spider-Man comics, nearly word for word. The difference is that Peter had done some shitty stuff before Uncle Ben’s speech.
He had been skipping school, he accidentally knocked out a bully at school, he smashed a desk in the middle of class, he broke Flash’s hand instead of just humiliating him, his grades had been dropping.
When May and Ben confronted Peter about what had been happening, he snapped at them, stormed off and went to a party. Ben found him there and then gave him the speech. Peter had been a bonafide ass throughout the comic, warranting such an extreme response.

Gotta super disagree with your point about Ben being upset at Peter. Keep in mind Peter was already sort of in trouble for the basketball incident with Flash, and on top of that Peter didn’t just forget milk and eggs…he forgot to help his Aunt get home. At night. In Superhero movie New York, where it might as well be Chicago or Detroit. Yes Ben could’ve listened, but it seems silly not to understand Ben’s frustration. Not to mention obvious tension they have with his frustration about his parents and his sense of abandonment. And I disagree about Ben’s killer. It doesn’t bother me that he never catches him, because the reality is in terms of the story, he doesn’t have to. While I don’t like Ben’s death has less to do with Peter’s actions and more to do with just bad luck, I don’t think Peter HAS to catch the random blonde tattooed murderer in New York City. Unless Peter got stupid lucky, he’s not going to find the guy, and hunting him isn’t heroic. It’s a different take, but not a bad one. Doesn’t feel like the movie forgot, it felt intentionally let go.

They do a fine enough job to set up the character of Connors and why he would use himself as a test subject, but once he becomes the Lizard he immediately goes "holy shit, lizards are so cool, wish they were the next step in human evolution". Actually having him slowly loosing his sanity while still trying, or beliving, to do good would have made him much more sympathetic.
On a side note, i always felt bad about Andrew Garfield. He got so much hate between this movie and the second because fans still weren't over Spider-Man 4's cancellation, while he actually did a great job with what he was given. At least now he has a really solid movie career under his belt a

My feeling on the different Spider-Man series:
-Tobey: Great Peter Parker, mediocre Spider-Man; very good at being a downtrodden dweeb for whom everything goes wrong, great personal emotional core, but not particularly witty or quippy or willing to keep things light and fun during action scenes. The overwrought puberty metaphor and extraordinarily messy third film are big problems for me.
-Andrew: Mediocre Peter Parker, great Spider-Man; fun, quippy, smart science hero who is very cool in the suit, but painfully misses the vital notion that Peter Parker shouldn't be cool. The confused plotting and attempts to keep the Amazing movies from too closely resembling ideas from the Raimi films keep things from making sense a lot of the time.
-Tom: Great Peter Parker, great Spider-Man; fun and quippy in the suit with great action scenes and properly scaled threats plus a relationship with a broader story and character set, plus Peter Parker out of the suit is a schlubby kid who kind of doesn't know what he's doing at all but is still very smart and capable. The only major problem I have with MCU Spidey is that sometimes the scale gets too big to stay grounded, resulting in plots that make him feel a little too charmed and invulnerable, but I don't mind that so much since I like big ensemble superhero stories. Also he's weirdly young - largely in line with other popular contemporary portrayals of the character, but I still don't love it.
And of course Miles Morales is just the best, because Spider-Verse got him right the first time and ran with it.

Interesting. I would concur this is a very flawed film, but I like it. For me, the acting sells the Ben and Peter scene and I can very much relate to that type of dynamic. I’m also surprised that you feel that the revenge plot wasn’t resolved satisfactorily. It felt to me like he learned and grew up.
I think part of what makes the revenge plot lack of resolution work is the overall tone of the film. It’s a much more grounded, bleaker film and in the real world we don’t get resolutions to emotional problems when we confront a criminal so to speak. Sometimes we do but often times we don’t. I get why you’re dissatisfied but I didn’t feel it.

I would 100% agree with you that narratively the movie really needed more work, it’s unified in tone & has compelling characters & has interesting-albeit underdeveloped themes-but narratively it is messy and too concerned with setting up the next film.

I think the only reason I didn't outright hate this movie when it came out was cause I thought Emma Stone looked really hot in it...

I thought the first amazing Spider-Man was alright. But it felt like a soulless sony project and I was still so mad they canceled Spider-Man 4 it left a sour taste in my mouth. Amazing Spider-Man 2 though, just plain bad

In my personal opinion the worst Spider-Man movie is Far from home. To me it failed the characters and didn't know what kind of message it wanted to tell.

This movie is boring and forgettable on its own but the thing that really pisses me off is how absolutely ugly the design for the lizard is. They had one job in that regard, and it was to make a scary villain, and they made him look goofy as hell
