- ICON is a still in development tactical fantasy tabletop roleplaying game written by Tom Parkinson Morgan, or Abbadon, author of Kill Six Billion Demons, set in the land of Arken Eld that's pivoting from a peaceful green age to the violent turbulence of the churning age as ancient arkentech ruins rise from beneath the surface.
And you, are the Icon, a person cursed to have great power and fated to change the course of history. Question is, what will you do with this power?
You can get Icon playtest version for free on itch io ( massif-press.itch.io/icon ) right now! But it's still in a rather rough phase and undergoing all sorts of changes and balancing, so the final result will possible be a lot different.

As a procrastinating trainwreck of a person who hasn't finished anything yet and has trouble even finishing painting my Battletech models, I bow down to him in both fear and awe and pray to attain 0.01% of his power.
I mean. I wouldnt be too surprised if the RPGs are just him procrastinating on K6BD, while K6BD is him procrastinating on RPGs. ^^
Me: "Ok, so one of my players wants to run a 5e game, and after that I'll run my Pathfinder 2e homebrew, maybe do a few Thirsty Sword Lesbian one shots, if the Avatar game is out by then maybe we'll mess around with that for a bit, and then once we get all of that out of the way I think I can convince them to give Lancer a go."
Abbadon: "... so here's this Icon thing..."

Check out Warpland. It is great for smaller games, easy to pick up and pretty unique in what it offers. It is also very cheap.

This game literally has everything I want:
- Cowboy class
- Murderclown class
- Fishing
- Cooking
- Cool lore stuff
- Nonlethal encounters for maximum friendship

As a heads up to anyone watching, ICON was recently updated to 1.4 and has more jobs and additional system clarity than shown off in this video. Check it out, it's nearing content completion by the author's reasoning, but keep in mind it's still a little awkward in its formatting as it is still a beta.
On another note, I have to thank you for showing off this system DK. I'm swapping over to it from a Pathfinder-style system for long running campaign. Really hoping that Massif keep publishing systems like these; both ICON and LANCER have so much lore for their worlds but have some crazy adaptability to homebrew settings that I don't see too often for non-narrative games.

Consistently impressed with Abbadon's capacity to make ttrpg lore that makes you care. It's hard to describe, but the fundamental thru lines of the world (moving from the green age to the churning, dealing with the past monsters coming to harm people in the present) is a nice piece of context to root characters and settings into the greater goings on of the world, no matter how small a part they play. It's the same genius of the world of Lancer, and it makes me feel like I should have a stake in what's going on in the big picture

Started getting into ICON thanks to this video. Wish people made more videos on this game because while I'm slowly making my way through the book, I think visual examples of real play would help a lot.
My brain is locked in sci-fi mecha mode right now, but I'm gonna make a point of looking at this to see if there's anything I can steal for Lancer. And I'm sure I'll have headspace for fantasy again at some point.
I'm sure a bit of geneering (especially with paracausal assistance) could make the kin a viable "lifestyle choice" for Lancer folks bored with baseline humanity.
What I would give to come across a small channel playing a campaign of this with their friends

im so hyped for this, I love lancer so much but my players are so accustomed to the fantasy setting of D&D. I'm def gonna try to run a short campaign of this at some point it looks so sick
One thing I’d like to see added to these types of PbtA/BitD games is the idea of the “owe list” from In a Wicked Age.
The idea from the “owe list” is that there’s no mechanical downside to your character dying, and can actually benefit you for you allowing your character to die (in In A Wicked Age, death has to be agreed upon by all players involved).
It basically gives you an extra power or feat on your next character if your character died.
That sounds like an interesting idea but Icon has like several ways of mitigating both player's death and NPC's death. It could work for a more 'lethal' RPG though!
@@11dragonkid11 I think even in a “non-lethal” rpg it can be used as a way to entice players into doing a heroic sacrifice if they know not only will it not be punished, but also rewarded if it helps the narrative gameplay.
Edit: it doesn’t even have to be a death per se: one of the big influences of Icon is FFVI, Terra gets taken out of the narrative for awhile and then gets a power up, it could be anything that takes you out of the narrative for awhile.

Thank you for this video! We started playing this game a few weeks ago and we have been loving it. Also I absolutely loved your video. The quality and jokes were fantastic! If you haven't already, the robots voices are okay but admittedly I love the human voice. I think you'd be amazing but understand if you don't want to.

I played a test tactical combat and I played a fox man demon slayer who had a giant axe! He got his ass beat by two crystal demons and they tore his arm off and are planning to sacrifice him. I’m gonna see if I can get my kids to make characters to go save him! It was fun though!

@@LordAini Nah, a good chunk of my players are down for new systems. The problem is more that there's a buttload of systems that are in the queue before ICON, and so it's more trying to convince them (and myself) to play this one first.

Enochian are straight up Lina Inverse from Slayers. She even has an ability called "Dragon Slave" with her ultimate spell being "Giga Slave."

This game sounds incredibly fun and at the same time more unique type of fantasy than your typical D&D clone or Low Fantasy. Even the way you explain the game makes it more palatable than other "reviewers".
It doesn't have much to do with it but even this channel convinced me to try and read Lancer... And I don't like mechas :D
I've been hoping to run this for a bit once I get the gumption. This system seems cool, though, obviously, rough around the edges. I hope people don't approach this game as if it's a finished project.

Most likely case is there's a free player version with no GM section, and a paid one with it like Lancer, so a campaign group only need one person to buy the book to play it.

Hi, sorry I ask this here but i don't know where to ask. Can anyone explain how crits work in narrative play? i can't make heads or tails of the rules regarding them like what does "6,6" mean?
Critical hit in narrative play would mean that the player get better than normal result with whatever they are doing. Obviously this depends on GM, but you basically get better result.
