#FabulaUltima - Komedie
There's also apparently hard cover copy ( studio2publishing.com/products/fabula-ultima-ttjrpg-core-rulebook ) now which I didn't know and couldn't put in the video because it literally went up last week
Thank you for this! I just bought the game and the starter adventure from this link. Should be here is just a few days.
"360 full-color pages softback, beautifully illustrated by professional artists from all over the world"
Its soft cover but still beautiful
Fun fact: Fabula Ultima won Lucca Comics & Games' Best RPG of the Year last year.
The award got handed to the team by Yoshitaka Amano himself. Yes, THAT Amano.
This is the closest thing you can get to being sired a knight in the JRPG realm.
True that. Well deserved recognition, too.
I've played this in a oneshot, and it evoked feelings of the first time I've ever played a TTRPG, it was so good. (our theme was JRPG character tropes that were abandoned by the plot (mentor who didn't die, recruitable 4th character who never got recruited, that stuff))
I love that lol
Oh I love that theme.
If I ever find the time I'd love to jump back into a full blown Fantasy setting.
Ultima is super high on my list RPGs to run. Super nice that you cover it
The kid finding the content
This highly reminds me of Sword World TTRPG - basically Japanese DnD. Though they don't have official translations, the fan ones are pretty good. Sadly didn't manage to play it, as our GM left our group because of two...less-then-nice people in it.
But this one looks promising
I'm halfway through the video and I was about to say the same thing, the character options seem almost exactly like Sword World RPG, but I don't know about the combat timing system
Dragon: "Be careful with Escalation! Don't just use it for dungeon bosses willy nilly!"
Every. Single. J SNES game: .... No.
I've felt kinda burnt out of TTRPG Fantasy games recently (namely D&D and Pathfinder), but as a long fan of JRPGS this is very tempting.
And actually making a techno-fantasy setting in Fabula will make it different enough from DnD and PF.
@@satsebeli Out of curiosity, does picking one fantasy setting over another presented lock out options? My friend is running Genesys for us and that book has some aspects restricted to certain settings by default.
@@Chconroy I have no idea, I just bought the rulebook after seeing this video :D
@@Chconroy no , the "settings" are just suggestions to evoke a certain atmosphere
I love setting-agnostic TTRPGs! Thanks for bringing this to my attention!
So when can we expect Custom Werks for Fabula Ultima?
This system seems pretty charming! I doubt I'll be able to talk my friends into playing it, but I'll try to give it a look through some time.
Also, I'm not sure if you look into recommendations, but I really enjoy the flavor and aesthetic of Heart: The City Beneath. It's got a lot of mechanics I really like for narrative play and some really bizarre classes.
Dude you have to do a trash talk on these classes maybe grouping some of the simpler class into one video to fill it out.
I would love to see this become more of a series like your Lancer videos. Build ideas and deep dives into a class.
Honestly, the fact that with the weapons and items they have a little sprite sprite instead of something intricately drawn out is just adorable and i love it
This is *absolutely* what I was looking for atm
This game needs a mechanics where you get a combat boost if you gasp really dramatically.
Also a mechanic where if you give a really schmaltzy speech about the power of friendship your whole team gets a boost.
Have never played a RPG tabletop game but I love watching campaign podcasts like critical role or the Unexpectables. I just wish there was an online campaign series that used one of these anime-inspired systems because I feel like that would make for a great series.
Love it when you do these videos showing off lesser known RPGs. Most of the games I play now I found out through your stuff. And now I have another one to try 😊
Damn, I was looking for something like this and then saw that my boy dragonkid made a video about a system I may like! Thanks! Gonna try Fabula, see how it goes
Hell Yeah, It's JRPG Time!!
Awesome! One more to my list of i will buy and never have a consistent group to play!
Also...
The title is final fantasy in Italian, i think!
more like "the Last Story", but yes it was a joke title that eventually stuck!
yeah know i heard Fabula Ultima was a rules light game so i putt it on the back burner but thank to your video i kinda want to pick it up now
I’m a huge JRPG nerd so this is totally something I’d love to play!
Hi, are you gonna do an updated video on FIST as the full game just got released?
Your sense of humour is outstanding
Always nice to see EBF getting a shout out. Cheers to Kupo games.
I was already down for most of this as a jrpg fan. Then you brought up they had a necromancer, and now I'm also interested as a skeleton fan!

I want to deny your accusations that JRPGers are item hoarders... but I CAN'T!!! I LITERALLY never let myself go into a boss battle without at LEAST 50 of every healing potion!
wait what Drive thought rpg is hard to use????
cool overview
holy shit seeing EBF in there sent me BACK dude
1:58 Tbf there often is, so excuse me for being prepared
This game does look very cool, but it also reminds me of Sword World. It's been the top fantasy game in Japan for ages and while not 1 to 1 in any regard, it definitely seems akin to it.
8 damage types is actually a little less than average. Even in 5e you have slashing, piercing, bludgeoning, radiant, necrotic, fire, cold, lightning, acid, poison, force, psychic, and thunder just off the top of my head. And all of those damage types can be either magic or not.
Dragon, dude, you gotta play Chrono Trigger. I've hardly touched JRPGs but I played it earlier this year and I was enRAPTURED by it. PLEASE treat yourself to it--there's a reason why it's number one!
Thanks for the overview and bringing spotlight to these lesser known great TTRPGs as always, Kid.
Kid.. Kid.. i have to tell you this buddy. I think you should step down a bit from the TTRPGs games.. and play one of those true JTRPG games bro.
Final Fantasy IV, VI or Tactics perhaps..
or Persona 3, 4, 5..
Legend of Zelda The Breath of The Wild perhaps..
They are as amazing as our forefathers fortold ..
"Damage types can get complicated cuz they're 8 damage types."
Have... have you ever played jrpg kid?
Edit: saw the end, he hasn't
Or a trrpg. 5e has like 13 types of damage, each of which can also be either magic or nonmagic, which could all also either be lethal or non-lethal.
If 13th Age taught me anything, it's that class-based games ought to have significant variations in how complex their classes are. Not everyone want to deal with involved mechanics that take many pages of rules to explain, while other folks are going to get bored very fast without loads of rules to engage with and choices to make. Fabula Ultima has taken that lesson to heart.
That title though - cripes, that does not abbreviate well. Sounds like you're cursing the listener put every time you use it. :)
Apparently some people just abbreviate it to FabU, for good reason
Getting very strong Wizardy 7/8 vibes here.
Who exactly referred to this as a battle egg combat style? What a peculiar term
Wow, posted five minutes ago, thats a first.
finally I can force my friends to play ffxiv w me
Not being able to hoard potions is the most anti-JRPG mechanic ever. If I don't have 5347 phoenix down by campaign's end is it really a JRPG?
😂😅
I know I’ve done that before.
But won’t lie, item management has that “Legend of Dragoon” feel to it.
Might be a nice change.
But to frank I don't really need it that much since. my D&D games already have chocobo's and airships.
9:09 ...excessive? I'm a tad sick of the 3 or 5 elemental rps systems, something that's not just a straight up "Here's your rock paper scissors and maybe spock lizard" sounds like improvement, even if just barely so.
Was enjoying the intro until Kid had to come after me with the hording items and never using them because of finalier bosses.
Good thing i dont feel shame.
Class breakdowns felt dismissive honestly...
Like something I'd expect from someone with a much worse opinion of the system.
