An excellent tutorial for T'au players on what not to do. And I am not talking about sept choice and army build, I like to see different builds, this was a cool T'au army with a cool paint job, so always nice to see. But there are alot of mistakes that cost the T'au player the game from the begining of the game. 1 - Shield drones don't work the way you think. They transform a wounding attack into A SINGLE MORTAL WOUND on a drone, which then gets to ignore it on a 5+. Even a great smite, becomes 1 single mortal wound. 2 - choose your Kau'yon well, especially if you don't have shadowsun, you have none to spare. With cold star commanders, it would have been a breeze to cover the broadsides as well as most of the "firebase". 3 - choose your targets in order of decreasing threats they pose. That Dread knight needed to be taken down, broadsides are made for this, the knights at the other end of the table while also on an objective... were no threat to anyone but the kroots on the hill. 4 - speaking of broadsides, always check your line of fire before you start or end your move phase. You're better to shoot at -1 than not having anything to shoot at. Broadsides are a huge point investment so you need to squeeze every kill out of them. especially against tough targets like GK. 5 - crisis suits are tough cookies, drop them within their maximized efficiency range, especially if you have plasma weapons. In this perticular case, within 12'' would have given you 3 more shots, can you smell the burning GueronSha (space marine in T'au)? 6 - While multiple weapon loadouts on crisis suits give them more flexibility it also dulls the cutting blade that they are. In this case plasma and missiles are for different types of target. plasmas are rapid fire, mid range weapons with high ap and a single wound each, missiles are higher strength, longer range, lesser AP and higher damage. So while plasmas are great at cutting down marines, missiles are not as efficient and you loose some damage unless you play vs primaris. I say this because I'm afraid this video will reinforce that there is only the Triptide Shield Swarm build that is playable for T'au, and I find that build boring as hell. The army showcased here was a fun, original, dynamic build and better played it would serve as an example that there are more to T'au than the boring Triptide Shield Swarm build. And, it was cool to see Da'Lyth, a very cool sept. We need to see more of these original builds. And for that I tip my hat to you fine sirs.
As a new player who chose T'au, I really appreciate this breakdown. I actually read it before watching the video and I feel like it really helped me push forward my understanding of how to play T'au. I also like the idea of an off-meta build that won't make people not want to play me when I eventually get to my local game store for some matches.

Great tips and I agree with the main points you make, though surely the bigger mistake on the use of drones is that they can't accept smites at all? They can only intercept attacks, and only if a wound roll is made (which also means that hits that inflict automatic mortal wounds can't have those mortal wounds passed off, but wound rolls that inflict additional mortal wounds are passed off with the normal wounds and together become 1MW on the drone).
I will point out, per a recent faq... You can't pass smites off to drones... Even if you could. Mortal wounds are always sets of individual damage. 5 mortal wounds, regardless would always count as 5 instances of 1 damage.

Hi SEO. I've been following your channel for the last year. I'm not actually a gamer but have always loved the lore of warhammer and really enjoy watching your battles as you make reference/explain the naritives behind each race and why they act/fight in a ceartin way and your battle naritives/stories are highly entertaining. I really enjoy the tactics/fun you and the other gamers clearly have when you battle and it is a testament to your channel that you appeal to not only the hardcore gamers but to individuals like myself who just enjoy watching yous play the game. What would you say are your top 5 games/battles over the years that have went right down to the wire? Cheers Neale
Love watching Winter's battle reports, keep it up I actually created my own custom army, filled with Tau, guardsman, and Grey Knights, all custom painted
The rule "Brotherhood of Psykers" gives them +1 to Psychic Tests, whether this is casting a power or denying an enemy power. It's near the end of the codex I believe.
Never played 8th edition, are tanks and armoured veichles in general worth something in this edition? I'm asking cause I've been watching some reports and I didnt spot any, so I guess not.
Ive got to say, Im trying to pick up the Tau but their lack of melee makes it hard, it stresses the importance of keeping units alive, so I thought the Kroot would be good fodder, however the way they look just doesnt mesh with the Tau at all, but after seeing this army, I was very impressed, the color scheme made it all come together really nicely. I really enjoyed picturing the battle going on in my head, a Star Wars like battle where there are two armies fighting, with natives assisting one side. Sort of like the Ewoks on Endor, the Wookies on Kashyyk (spelling), and so on. That being said, OUCH, poor Tau, those dice need to be melted down slowly and turned into dominos
Agree with you on the color scheme, love it. Seeing people's Tau armies as a scifi fan I love how they seem so unique in their model form. It just seems like you would absolutely have to be extremely experienced to make them competitive. Which is sad because I do believe that there really is a greater good.
@@alexanderpavlik9420 yeah the main competitive way ive seen is to do the riptide with a bunch of shield drones thing, which isnt my way of play, so ill play for fun with my melee crisis unit drop team lead by Farsight, its all for the greater good ;)
Something cool for next time Winters - when you were going after that riptide, think you may have been able to use that stratagem once one unit shoots at it, you can start re-rolling the wounds to "bring it down".
I'm sorry but you are mixing 2 different stratagems, one "command and control node" where you pick a Commander and it may not shoot this phase and pick a battlesuit within 6" that may re-roll failed wound rolls, the other one is a T'au sept specific stratagem "focused fire" that allow you to have a +1 to wound against an enemy unit after that unit has been wounded (unsaved) from another tau unit.
@@SoldierAssassin98 not for the tau, was meaning for the grey knights trying to shoot at the riptide. Think it's one of the new stratagems from the psychic awakening book. Not sure of riptides are classed as vehicles or monsters though..
No it's not, the opponent made a mistake. Smites were never able to be passed off by saviour protocol. But it's ok, didn't change the outcome of the game an both players had loads of fun.
Awsome video, really enjoyed it. As soon as I saw the Tau heavy weapons with rubish mobility in one corner, I was like "O'dear". Still an honrable game :) I really enjoyed the Tau list. I am sure now he has experianced the new Grayknights he would alter his stragaty, but the army comp was fine.
Paul Sim thanks for the kind words. Yeah i flubbed up deploying them there. My plan was to kind of lure his forces in and kind of pull my castle back towards them but didn’t quite go to plan haha. Yeah I’d change plans if doing the game again, Would castle up more and bubble wrap with the kroot and push them forward pre game and not spread my army too wide and also take ats on the broadsides as -1 ap just didn’t cut it against tide of shadows . Hey ho lessons learned
@@Kahlcarl after the hard lesson of his first turn, your army had lost its unit with poor mobility on that (your right) flank, if you had pulled back hard towards your left flank, you would of pulled him intowards your heavy weapons whilst minimising his return fire due to his range limitations. As his list only has a few mobile units per phaze. Still thats all hind sight. But owning his side of that middle ridge would of given him a hard time trying to consentrate firepower on you. I think your dice gods also looked the other way :) Edit **of course that sounds good, but I suppose he would of pinned you with the deep strike troops if you pulled back to hard... ahh so maybe not a good plan afterall...**
I'd see the argument for the Tide of Shadows that since it's the Unit that needs to be entirely on or within, the Nemesis-bois would get the -1 by toeing the terrain, since their whole Unit (aka 1 Model) would be on a terrain.
Very enjoyable battle report. It is refreshing seeing people using non competitive lists and factions. I hope The Greater Good book rewards some of this non traditional lists for the Tau.
Those rocks look loose, do you just have a bag/bags of rocks that you pore out on the table and like, sweep up after or something? They just dont look glued to a base.
It’s aquarium gravel. Locate the large terrain first. Put handfuls of gravel in place and then use a hand-brush to tidy up the edges. Use the dust-pan along with the brush to clear up after the game. Pretty simple. But takes experience to dress a game-table as well as Winters does.
What a bloody fight! I know everyone "hates" Tau, but they look SO cool. However, Winters, I think you've given me the 40k bug with your Grey knights :)
I have to say that I really enjoyed seeing an unconventional T'au list for a change. Sure, they didn't do as well as the meta list did but getting first turn may have changed that. I don't often enjoy watching T'au games, so thanks for this! :)
This is such an awesome war game, I don't like every single unit having an action every turn, a large army with lots of fire power will chew an army up before they even have their turn. Puts way too much importance on who goes 1st.....
Bellport Battle Bunker Nope! Savior protocols can only protect against range and melee attacks, not psychic powers or any similar abilities since they don’t considered as attacks.
I see these small pebbles all the time on this channel, but this time they're much more massed together. Are those all loose, or do you group them together with something? That's gotta be a pain to set up if they're all individual pebbles.
Also you can't pass smites off to drones. Savior Protocol only comes into effect after a successful Wound roll, there are no Wound rolls in a psychic test.
@@Kahlcarl Thank you for bringing a narrative-driven list and even though you passed the mortal wounds onto the drones you cheated yourself by thinking the crisis suits are T4, so in the end, it balanced out. Also, Kauyon allows you to choose friendly units within 6" to reroll all failed to-hit rolls, but they cannot move for any reason. The key here you can choose since they dropped an FAQ like a year ago so if you wanna move you still can. Great army by the way
Much like a certain someone reviewing Dawn of War Soulstorm, at the begining cinematic, why are the whitch hunters fighting people that don't know what magic is?
Great battle report. :) Just a quick note, saviour protocols only work off of melee and shooting. They are unable to block mortal wounds (2018 errata).
Man I was just going to say but was looking to see if someone else noticed first. It’s one of those things that is REALLY noticeable when played back in any kind of recording. This guy is PARTICULARLY horrific with it.

Should have dropped the CP for bring down the beat out of the new book when you started shooting the riptide with storm bolters. Rerolling wounds would have been useful
I’m new to 40K - watching these BatReps in order to learn the game and choose an army to play - but I have to say, this battle really made me take a step back and wonder whether I want to play 40K at all. I understand that it is a significant investment in time, effort, and money putting together a thematically pleasing army - and I’m okay with that, I enjoy the craft side of the hobby - but it’s the 40K order of play that is really starting to put me off. One side takes all their actions while the other player just watches and makes save rolls - so much dead playtime - and then the position is reversed. That an entire army can take all its moves FIRST based on a dice roll is ridiculous. This is the 21st century and that kind of gameplay mechanic is medievally clunky. Even GO knows going first is an unfair advantage so the second player gets an automatic point increase. Units being fired upon don’t even have the opportunity to return fire. Just sit there and be wiped out. I’m beginning to think that 40K might not be for me. It’s an undeniably pretty game, but under the surface you get the feeling that there is not a central person with a clear vision of a better game and the passion to make it a reality taking charge of the development of each edition, which leads to extremely conservative committees headed by accountants releasing unbalanced editions of the rules that require patches to be added to patches rather than ever addressing fundamental issues. Deep lore is a poor replacement for elegant gameplay; it’s a distraction from poor game design. And it’s said style over substance started with Kickstarter. Hmmm...
@@kyledukes49 that might be a good idea, tho I am most concerned with the shooting prowess of some armies and their tendencies to wipe away a kwarter of the enemy turn one. the armies just start so close to eachother, and there is so much good shooting, especially som races are verry susceptible as they are pretty squishy.
I'm newb to this. But the Tau player seemed to position his army way too spread out. He should've forced his opponent to face off against the XV88s. The Kroot are cannon fodder, so losing them like that is to be expected, especially against those kind of troops. The Kroot should've been used to make charging the Tau difficult, to make the opponent think again if he really want to charge into some simple Kroot and be fired upon by heavy overwatch fire. The map did seem a bit small, but maybe thats because of the teleporting ability from the Grey knights? Tau have long range weapons, if I didn't get first turn I'd put most things grouped up and at the edge of the map(maybe the Kroot a bit ahead, so they could advance to the objectives). Especially since his Coldstar battlesuits have so much movement. Though I do find Smite to be a bullshit ability after watching this battle report.
Right, what exactly is the draw back of smite? Just seems like every unit got an extra two shot each turn with a super easy roll. Looked quite OP and honestly made the game not much fun to watch when one team is rerolling all their ones and gets and entire extra attack phase

It's the same reason your models dont have to be wholly within 3" when you disembark a vehicle.
Can you have both the dominus and sanctic disciplines in one army
@@MaxR0 of course, but only models with the character keyword can choose spells from the sanctic discipline. Also, models can only have spells from one discipline at the same time. For instance, a single librarian cannot know both armoured resilience and sanctuary at the same time, even with the lore master warlord trait.
The armies and lists are fantastic! Thanks for playing some different and fluffy looking things (speaking to the Tau!).
The best batrep channel on CZcams. Thanks Winters :^)
Dude you get good friend points for taking that lose of that 5 and 6 when you accidentally dropped those. Also this was great to watch. I would really like to see drukari vs grey knights.
Really enjoyed this battle report. Grey Knights are my favorite army, so I love seeing them in any report. Dark Angles next? Vs the Thousand Sons for more updates with the new book?
Or maybe some Sisters games as well?
Grey Knights have waited far too long for some much needed attention. Enjoy this, it’s time to hunt daemons!
Love watching Winter's battle reports, keep it up
I actually created my own custom army, filled with Tau, guardsman, and Grey Knights, all custom painted
I've heard it so many times now but I somehow fail to find the page - where does it say in the Codex that Grey Knights get +1 to cast? Thanks guys!
The rule "Brotherhood of Psykers" gives them +1 to Psychic Tests, whether this is casting a power or denying an enemy power. It's near the end of the codex I believe.
Where is the say hi Paul sisters batrep with new codex?
How do you do the lighting for battle reports?
@@alexanderpavlik9420 yeah the main competitive way ive seen is to do the riptide with a bunch of shield drones thing, which isnt my way of play, so ill play for fun with my melee crisis unit drop team lead by Farsight, its all for the greater good ;)
Can someone please explain me why they use a ruler and not a reticule? Why "advances 12 inches" and not "5 squares" or something like that
Something cool for next time Winters - when you were going after that riptide, think you may have been able to use that stratagem once one unit shoots at it, you can start re-rolling the wounds to "bring it down".
@@TheImmersedOfficial oh my bad, I misunderstood
How long does it take to set up and clean up all that gravel? xD
Since MW's aren't weapon attacks, how do shield drones intercept them? Per last FAQ
Does subscribing to Patreon give access to the DZTV videos or are they separate subscriptions?
2 separate subs.
Is the SMITE psychic power considered an Attack Roll? Cuz Savior Protocols only allows wound passing when resolving an Attack Roll.
I think your dice gods also looked the other way :)
Edit **of course that sounds good, but I suppose he would of pinned you with the deep strike troops if you pulled back to hard... ahh so maybe not a good plan afterall...**
Should your storm bolters wounded the crisis suits on 5+ i stead of 4+ as they are T5 and storm bolters are S4.
Damn, Grey Knights got OP congrats you all needed that.
"GK got blown away by Tau"
They would get blown away by a light breeze before the PA update
keep up the great work luv ur vids and warhammer have fun
Somebody sketch "Nemesis Dreadnewt suit" and send it to Winters.
Dieter другliever lol
A dreadnought with the face of newt from aliens? Just a thought 🤔
I'd see the argument for the Tide of Shadows that since it's the Unit that needs to be entirely on or within, the Nemesis-bois would get the -1 by toeing the terrain, since their whole Unit (aka 1 Model) would be on a terrain.
Velgar Grim you are correct, sir.
@@peterdickinson4599 his table allways looks nice
What a bloody fight! I know everyone "hates" Tau, but they look SO cool. However, Winters, I think you've given me the 40k bug with your Grey knights :)
Great battle report i needed something like this tau vs grey knights woohooo!
Are Kroot useful now? I stopped playing in 5th edition.
I have to say that I really enjoyed seeing an unconventional T'au list for a change. Sure, they didn't do as well as the meta list did but getting first turn may have changed that. I don't often enjoy watching T'au games, so thanks for this! :)
Jeremy Blankenship thank you, really appreciate that comment :)
@@Kahlcarl You are most welcome! I look forward to seeing you again on other Winters/Moarhammer BatReps!
This is such an awesome war game, I don't like every single unit having an action every turn, a large army with lots of fire power will chew an army up before they even have their turn. Puts way too much importance on who goes 1st.....
Winters opponent should be called King Tut
When you notice looooool
Is it just me or does that ancient chaos shrine have a power outlet?
Love the channel.
Where can I get those rocks? They seem like white aquarium rocks
It's just a mixture of aquarium gravels
YEEAAHH! Krootox! Love those guys.
Can savior protocols be used against smite?
Bellport Battle Bunker Nope! Savior protocols can only protect against range and melee attacks, not psychic powers or any similar abilities since they don’t considered as attacks.
I see these small pebbles all the time on this channel, but this time they're much more massed together. Are those all loose, or do you group them together with something? That's gotta be a pain to set up if they're all individual pebbles.
A box full of gravel is an easy way to add some depth and texture. Just keep a dustpan handy and you're golden
Dust-pan and hand-brush mate.
Even super smites for the grey knights only do 2 damage?
They cannot super smite, but always smite on 4's, because of brotherhood of psychers and -1 to cast.
Also you can't pass smites off to drones. Savior Protocol only comes into effect after a successful Wound roll, there are no Wound rolls in a psychic test.
GuyUnderTheBridge hey, yeah I wasn’t aware of this beforehand. I’ve caught up on the faq so I know for next time :)
Great army by the way
Viktor Grushovyy yeah I was re reading the codex and realised this as well 👍 again unintentional and I know for next time :) still learning them haha
I might be wrong but aren't you not allowed to take 2 Coldstar suits ???
Scott Lock hey, your limited to one commander (any type) per detachment. I had one heading up each of my 3 detachments :)
@@Kahlcarlahh ok my mistake
Much like a certain someone reviewing Dawn of War Soulstorm, at the begining cinematic, why are the whitch hunters fighting people that don't know what magic is?
Whhhaaaaa?
I can’t wait to watch this!
Thanks Winter for a Sunday battle report and can u do a sister of battle battle report?
Anyone noticed that noise the other guy makes before he says anything or is that just me ? I think its just me
The ethereal's storm of fire ability allows you to re-roll 1s if you don't move
Cool to see Kroot!
37:11 "dreadnoot... suit" lol
why didny you ignore the riptide and wipe everything off the board lol
Great battle report. :) Just a quick note, saviour protocols only work off of melee and shooting. They are unable to block mortal wounds (2018 errata).
Great batrep but the lip smacking drove me crazy
It's been ten seconds and I feel it already
OMG yes! It was super annoying lol
Man I was just going to say but was looking to see if someone else noticed first. It’s one of those things that is REALLY noticeable when played back in any kind of recording.
This guy is PARTICULARLY horrific with it.
*smacks lips
Yeah man I feel ya.
Would love to see some more Tau!
I see a trend here with Grey Knight armies not having enough units/points to make a full on Greyknights list for batreps, 1 would think they got new stuff to work with.....
Yezz they did, i know :P
Poor Poor Tau. The dice deserted them.
No tactical doctrine?
Not codex compliant army, so no doctrines at all
The fact that Grey Knight are getting this much love, is warming my hearth )
It’s finally time to awaken your Grey paperweights from their slumber
the scenery is beautiful
i think there decor for fish tanks lol
i think i may do that too
I thought there was a new rule where both armies fired at the same time so the person who goes first doesn't have a massive advantage?
They do in kill team, I'm pretty sure they haven't brought it to the actual wargame yet. Would make things interesting though.
Don't see Kroot too often. How cool.
I want you to get out of the factory too. I would suggest that you are doing a great job right up until you mention that. I have supported DZTV (by buying merch) and I'm sure others will too. I hope that you cross that threshold soon.
That battle mat always looks like frozen ice to me... 🧊
No HQ?
Me being a big GK nerd was just yelling at myself while you were shooting that Riptide in turn 2, going "Use Bring it Down! Use Bring it Down!"
Would have been sweet af.
well played winters! but cozy tau list ^^
Should have dropped the CP for bring down the beat out of the new book when you started shooting the riptide with storm bolters. Rerolling wounds would have been useful
We are the hammer!
All this Big Robots with his Marins in babybjörn Suites😂😂😂
Hmmm...
first turn advantage is yet again far to big in warhammer, there really need to be better rules and ways to deal with first turn advantage
Why not have player who goes first unable to use strategems?
@@qutini He certainly could have played it better, but I think going second seems like a death sentence most games. especially playing a t3 faction without great armour saves.
Geeeez, 3 dread knights... Winters, you glutton ^^
Okay okay, I'll take Music to be Murdered To off repeat for an hour to listen to this battlereport.
@Alien Alien Hey! Lucas Graham is not for everyone either and Baby Shark just doesn't do it for me.
Great guest! Hope to see him more in the future! Grey Knights got good!
The GameCraft Dragon thanks for comment
@@Kahlcarl Your Tau were wonderfully painted. Right beautiful army. Love the color scheme.
you only perils only on double 1's or 6's unless other effects cause you to peril on all doubles like the Master of Possesions
nvm, those are 6's. they looked like 4's
this battle makes me wonder why people are afraid of tau firepower
You can't pass mortal wounds on to drones from psychics, only wounds that result in a wound roll being made, the suit should be taking damage
