Paint and Review: Mantic's Ratkin Infantry [How I Paint Things]

- The Ratkin from Mantic Games are some seriously interesting miniatures. With both hand weapons and spears on the plastic sprue and a handful of resin pistol-wielding arms in the Ratkin Warband set, there's a few ways you can assemble these miniatures very quickly. The sculpts have plenty of detail but are designed to go together with a minimum of fuss, and there isn't a lot of flash or mould lines to be worried about during assembly.
All in all, they're a pretty cool kit! Batch painting them in groups of five or ten at a time will cut down on the amount of time spent on a unit, and lets you quickly swap through a handful of colours to mix up a unit's appearance and give them a real haphazard look. www.manticgames.com/games/kin...
Keep an eye out for the big boys in the kit when I paint the Nightmares and the War Chief! Thanks again to Mantic for sending along some very cool toys!

Big fan from Australia mate, just bought the Kings of War Goblins. Would love to see you do a goblin painting video, of the mantic ones anyway i know you have painted a gobbo before. Keep up the great work!
Regarding the bases; I'm glad to see that Mantic continues their honourable tradition of creating a product the is 90% great; but with one weird design decision that leaves me scratching my head. Having seen their more recent releases, I was getting worried that they's moved on to absolutely nailing their kits. 😍 That's a great paint job you've given them.
So close to perfect, right? 😅 But the miniatures themselves are nice, so I'll let that slide.
Most kings of war players will be dumping the bases and multibasing anyway.
One of the best guide for rat boys going to paint my army in this styl :D
Some of the early mantic minis were pretty rough, so make sure you read reviews before you buy any of their models. That said, all of their new units I've seen are fantastic. Their zombies are a fantastic deal and are very easy to paint, and the goblins have lots of character. I'll probably grab some more of their undead in the future too
Yeah, the earlier kits are a little more work to assemble, I've found... but like you, I've been happy with the newer releases. I'm especially keen on the look of those halflings!
You are correct when you say individual model removal is not a mechanic of kings of War. In kings of War troops are purchased in blocks of 10, and wounds accumulate on blocks of troops as they fail armor saves or succumb to magic etc. Each wound essentially lowers their leadership and when the unit fails its nerve test the whole unit is removed at once as morale gives out and they scatter.
What's so cool about mantic, is they still keep the end user in mind. I don't mind the earlier prints, nice to watch the company grow is great to see!
Nice review thank you!
Amazing! I just ordered the War in the Holds box set which I will split with a friend and this video will be perfect for painting my half of the box. To top it off I already have all the paints you used in the video. Excellent video and most Excellent timing. Thanks so much for this and your other excellent videos
Talk about serendipitous! :D I hadn't seen any other painting guides specific to Ratkin anywhere, so it seemed a happy coincidence to be able to get in with something for folks finding these guys for the first time.
I'm a fan of the previous plastic skaven so you've sold these dudes to me 😆😆😆
I was just reaserching these miniatures when this video came out. Perfect
They look great! I like the simple method you use as I think it is very effective indeed. Thanks for sharing this.
Very very cool!
I am right now starting a Ratkin army and was worried about the paint scheme. Found your video and will do it as you did. Thank you for sharing!
Looking good! I must admit that when I got my Kings of War starter I gave all the ratkin to my 12 year old to paint--but he loved them.
As long as someone enjoyed them, right? :D
You are just steady knocking it out of the park. I get all things I couldn't care less about in my feed but not the good stuff from the people I sub?!
It's a bit of a weird one. I get a lot of people telling me they're not seeing my stuff show up in their feed. :/
Great technique for batch painting large units regardless of game or genre. 😊👍
Thanks for the video. I just got a box of 40 of these guys. I'm going to mostly copy yours
Thank you , Troy .
Thanks for another great painting tutorial.
As for the Mantic bases... You could always glue very thin plastic card, that easily cuts with scissors, to the top of the base. It covers the hole but doesn't really add to the base's height. Even thin card stock paper, like an index card, would work.
Aye, good shout. There's plenty of ways to fix the issue, it's just something that surprised me a little to find and it seemed like it'd be worth pointing it out to any other newcomers to these juuust in case. But yeah, easy solutions abound!
That's a great idea! I was thinking of using greenstuff but that's a much cheaper alternative!
I would like to think that I can take a little credit for this since I was brazen enough to ask for this on Twitter,,, awesome work and I can't thank you enough for your outstanding guides!
Well timed, I have just assembled mine and like others I was just deciding on paint colours when you nailed it. Thanks Mate as always good content timed to perfection. I to would like to see your take on Mantic goblins sometime.
A couple of people have mentioned the goblins now, so it's on the cards. It'll be a little bit before that point - I've got some more rats to get through, after all! - but yeah, little green buggers are another quick force to paint.
Ahhhh I have these here built in front of me xD Need to get my kill team done so I can follow this tutorial to paint mine! :D Are you psychic or something?! :D
The video was coming from inside the house! ;D
Excellent!
I started doing the wash and then highlight around a year ago, just discovered it by accident now in the past week I've seen at least two or three serious CZcamsrs doing it in their videos - I guess that means I officially don't suck at this!
Sometimes it works a little better to highlight with something really sharp before washing, but yeah! Depending on what you're doing, highlighting afterwards gets a slightly different result you might prefer. There's no single right answer!
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio - it also helps when you're lazy, like me.
Perhaps a 'frostgrave barbarian' next ? keeping with the fantasy theme
Why find new/alternative bases when you have heaps of unwanted SPRUE? Chop and trim a bit or two of the sprue to fill the gap and makes a better connection to the base/paws 👍😊👌
Awesome 😎! Only you could break it down to show us how easy it is to paint an army! Thank you! 😀👍🙏
For the Mantic bases the bevel is so subtle I just flip them over - but yeah the circular indentation is a pain.
It's one of those things that has a pretty simple solution, but I figure if there's only one minor thing to point out that I didn't like, that's a kit not doing too badly. Especially if it's only the bases! 😂

Oops sorry I didn’t see it the first time. Missed the “read more” button. Do you know I watched the whole video again to write everything down and copy it into that response? What a doof I am…😬
Haha! It's all good mate, happens to all of us. I once asked someone a question which was answered in the title of the video. 😂
I have to ask: How do you tackle moldlines? Do you just leave them be? Do you scrape specific (visible) areas? Do you scrub the whole model top to bottom? I got these guys a while back, but the amount of cleanup each of them requires is driving me up the wall.
Great Video as usual
Is there a Citadel equivalent of Brain matter beige for the highlights???
Screaming Skull is pretty close.
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio thanks dude!!! Keep up the great work!!! I started my own Skaven on the back of this video!
They are really nice Models i have a Box Here.
Good Video and Good Paint Job!
But why does your agrax shade never looks dirty? D:
I couldn't really say? I shake it senseless each time I use it and if there's a ton of it pooling on a flat surface, I move it away with my brush before it starts drying and getting tacky.
Thank you so much for this vidio on the mantic rat bois, now I have reason to build and paint my rat army up!
would you suggest the same method for gobolins?
Pretty much, yeah! I'll need to tackle goblins in their own video eventually, since people seem pretty keen on that starter set!
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio almost done putting together all the rat stuff from that same box set too, tomorrow the paints are out!
Where did you get the Agrax earthshade pot holder from please?
It's a 3D printed one, the file's available on Thingiverse somewhere. I honestly don't remember which version it was, but there's dozens of them to choose from.
