- Koji Igarashi - alternative paths to game creation
We met with game industry veteran Koji 'IGA' Igarashi, who recently released "Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night", after a successful Kickstarter campaign held in 2015.
As he reflects back on the story behind his title, he was joined later that night by Yohei Kataoka, the creator behind "Tokyo Jungle", another game resulting from alternative funding.
That bloodstained trailer where igarashi responded to criticism by updating the game and actually listening to fans/customers was such an epic trailer.
English and French subtitles are available under the “CC” menu. Korean, Portuguese and Spanish subtitles have also been made available through Community Contributions, which are also open for additional language submissions. Thank you for following Archipel!
Thank you :-)
Hands down... one of the BEST youtube chanel's.. we need more content like this..
Thank you!
@@ArchipelDocumentaries Yes! Definitely the channel I've watched the most, would really appreciate japanese subtitles too (the auto generated ones are a bit wonky at times)
What I like about this conversation is it's like a discussion between the older generation and the younger. Yohei still has that spirit to innovate and try something new. The "game yaro-ze" which I think would be the Japanese equivalent of a game jam inspired him to keep trying something new. Iga has the weight of over two decades of developing and producing experience guiding him. They make a great contrast because you then come to realize you need people with both Yohei's enthusiasm and creativity and Igarashi's experience, wisdom, and knowledge to make great games.
They talk as equals with each other but you can also see how respectful Yohei is of Iga's seniority, and Iga also treats Yohei with the same type of respect as someone who could potentially be able to change things in the industry.
Very well done format Archipel. I really wanted to play Tokyo Jungle and was disappointed there's no PC version to play, but maybe one day Sony will allow a PC port to be made.
Actually, Game Yaro-ze was a bit more than a game jam in the sense that it directly aimed at finding new talent to join the industry, at a time when originality was starting to slow down.
It really is like the old master and the young student speaking, like an up and coming painter talking to an old Leonardo Di Vinci. 2 very interesting perspectives.
Didn't expect the chef to sneak his way into the conversation, haha.
You see this in Japanese bars. There's only seats for maybe 10 people but the bartender/chef/owner is also really there to have conversation with.
Making something good that doesn't sell well...
A little bit like this channel, you guys don't get nearly the appreciation you deserve! Thanks for another fantastic video.
Thank you, just hoping we won't fall in the something bad / sells well category :)
I think this interview (conversation?) is among your best videos.
It's really insightful. Hearing the thoughts of one of the legends of the industry is really appreciated.
Thank you for all your hard work.
Thank you, it means a lot to us.
I'd buy that game Iga really wants to make, even if no one else did.
IGA: Thank you so much for making Bloodstained, bought it for the Nintendo Switch. Finally got to play Symphony of the Night 2. If this was going to be the vision of it, is well capture. Everything is in it, all the elements! To all your production team and patrons from around the World who made this wonderful game. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
This is up there in my favorite types of content on CZcams. Thank you for your work.
Thanks for the kind word!
This content right here
Pure quality as always archipel
Thank you!
Merci, Archipel et merci à vos invités.
Yup, this format definitely works. A lot of interesting ideas floating arround in this one as usual, not to mention the highlight that was the chef's input on the conversation :D
Thank you guys!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed!
This video is one of my favourite of all time.
God this was so great to listen to. Hearing Iga having a mutual exchange with a dev from the game yaro-ze program where they both learn something from eachother is so amazing.
Glad you enjoyed!
THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO! WE ARE WAITING FOR A AYAMI KOJIMA INTERVIEW!!!
IGA is the man. Great episode.
Please do one with Masafumi Takada some time. Thanks
Thank you!
Finally wrapping up Bloodstained after putting it down for a month due to busyness. It's been a great ride from 2015 when Iga-san first announced the project and I pledged. While there are certain, let's say modern touches I would've liked to have seen in the game, along with some roughness that could be ironed out, and a sense of repetition and running out of steam in the later areas and enemy types, overall the game is a fitting companion to what he started with SotN and proudly stands at the top of the subgenre he helped build. Of course, much credit also has to be given to Michiru Yamane and the other composers who've crafted such a fitting extension of that classic goth pop rock style. So in short, I've been enjoying the game a lot. Thank you!
Great interview, I backed Bloodstained the moment the kickstarter went live without any hesitation. Bloodstained was well worth the wait. I'd love to drink with IGA given the chance!
One of the best channels I've ever seen
Thank you!
Loved it. This conversation format is the best. When less people it is better. I guess I am making that thing that wouldn't sell my self :D
Glad you enjoyed!
That is the closest I'll ever get to having a drink with IGA. Thank you so much for making this video!
Thanks for watching!
Will never get tired of these videos. The pace, mood, and subject matter... just perfect. As always thanks for your videos.
Thanks for watching.
I love to see some artists talking each other about our vision on business and how to draw of history of create a game what king of path you were in .igarashi is an artist not only a director of the game is bigger than that .this interview show that he has a vision of what the world of video game must be!!!
I can’t thank you guys enough for this beautiful channel!!
The number one inspirational source from CZcams for any artist out there.
Thanks a lot!
Dude, This conversation.. I've learned a lot on this video.
Again thanks for making this!!!
Glad you enjoyed!
I would love to see Hidetaka Miyazaki here someday. Thanks for the video.
Sorry to disappoint but Miyazaki doesn't do video unfortunately...
@@ArchipelDocumentaries too bad T_T
great episode, thank you
Thank you.
Iga is a legend
Woah, I was like "hmm 26 minutes, this is gonna be interesting ...", and before I realize I was almost done and it flew right past. This was really entertaining to watch, and very inspirational.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed!
iga is so chill
Indeed.
This was nice.
Thank you.
Thank you so much Archipel for these wonderful documentaries.
Thanks for watching!
Iga is a legend!
That speech was truly inspiring
Nothing really to say, but I enjoyed this video. Thanks for making and sharing it.
Castlevania is classic game
Like this video
man i'm glad this channel exists
Thank you, this really means a lot.
Once again you did it. I love the work you do Archipel
Thank you, glad you enjoyed!
I really liked this conversation thing you did! Great video as always
Thank you!
These candid interviews are awesome, even the bartender gets in.
I think gdc presentation about kickstarter is good advice
Thanks for the video! There're really a lot of materials, like IGA doesn't think his game is a indie game, and he prefers "good game, bad sales" than "bad game, good sales".
The altercation at 2:40 is interesting in a culture point of view, being called talented means nothing if you don't work hard for them. Where I live (South America) being called talented means more than hard worker. I think that's kind of ego stuff? In any way working steadily and harder for me it's always been more of praise than being talented and lazy. Being talented and hard worker is something to be admired too.
Thank you for all your content. Fav CZcams channel! 🙌🏻
Thank you, it means a lot to us!
Thank You!
Iga is amazing, but DAMN did I love Tokyo Jungle. Still do. Need to see that show up somewhere other than the PS3.
Super video !
Comme toujours :)
Merci!
Very interesting interview.... I'm among the Bloodstained backers! At this point I thought Iga would be a bit bitter about some of the complainers on the Kickstarter campaign (I'm not among them btw), glad to see he's doing well and not all that much turned off by it.
Great piece as always Archipel! o/
Thank you!
I came back here after trying the game. Unfortunately I did not enjoy this game, but I hope that any future projects from Iga and his team will be better.
thank you for uploading
Thanks for watching.
Dunno bout you, but I'd def buy a Tokyo Jungle remaster, especially if it was available on pc. Even if on epic store. Yeah.
Holy shit yes.
Fascinating insight. I'm curious to see what Iga will be up to in the future. It was interesting to see the other creator, good luck to him, since the gaming industry is a tough place to be in. The industry still has a sequel problem, but I don't see things getting better in the future, well, it's gonna be up to the indie creators at least.
Terrific interview
Glad you enjoyed!
Keep it up, you guys are the best.
Thank you!
Thanks from Brazil
Obrigado!
Please do more like Dream Cast and this one... So good! Maybe one for Shenmue 3 after it releases!! ❤️
A really great video! Thanks!
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing this great content.
Thanks!
muchas gracias
I'll buy Bloodstained when I have the money :) it looks fantastic, classic.
i like how iga refers to konami as "that big company" througout this entire documentary. not a single mention of "konami". i would be surprised if it is for legal reasons. no, i think he would rather forget much of his experiences there and prefers not to associate with the company in any capacity.
Which serves as a middle finger to Konami and the hostile treatment to the employees.
Awesome video. Best channel on YT.
Thank you very much!
Iga? More like Kenichi Smith haha. Thank you @UC3zoY9LapZERsN7caDKqz0w for another lovely documentary! I wonder what kind of gear you guys use for these documentaries?
Another great video!
Thank you.
Excellent !! beautiful word friends ! 11 dislike , what is a man ? A miserable little pile of secrets!
Please interview Tajima Hal.
@24:00 I wanna see that mysterious game!!
Notice how he avoids actually acknowledging that his whole career depends on the success of a series that was already immensely popular before he took control of it and that, in the end, unfortunately tanked under his reign.
Great video, as always, very thankful to see this series. Would love to see one on Inafune at some point.
Not actually true. He was responsible for the handheld vania titles and they were successful even till the end. Ha had no hand in the lords of shadows games.
Yeahno it tanked under MercurySteam buddy
bring Tokyo Jungle to steam...
After watching this... I wonder if Iga will ever make that title. My best guess is that it'll be crazy bad, but will have a sense of charm or almost like a departing gift many years later after (much like David Bowie's Black Star album) - or - times will have changed and what once wouldn't sell, will now come to fruition.
Igavania!
Vida eterna pra você iga!!!🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Why did I just discover this?!
Glad you did :)
Nice
Does anyone know where Bar Duke is? Would love to visit it when I travel over in September :)
Bar Duke is located in the Kanda area, in the eastern side of the city.
@@ArchipelDocumentaries Thank you
Subtítulos en español......por favooooooor
Subtítulos en español están disponibles!
3:10 "game yaro-ze" was SCEI (Japan) not SCEE (Europe) as per the subtitles.
Actually meant only SCE - fixed.
His nails look long. Holy cow! Never knew!
いつか大暮維人さんとか小畑健さんにインタビューしてくれないかな~。
こちらとしては、漫画家コンテンツをぜひ増やしたいと思っていますので、引き続き尽力していきますー
@@ArchipelDocumentaries 応援してます!
Do you forget switch version?
Anyone have information on the games shown at 21:47? Haven't seen most of them before.
These are all games from the "Game Yaro-ze" initiative, the list is as follows: Panekit, Patchwork Heroes, XI[sai],
Addie no Okurimono: To Moze from Addie, Doko Demo Issyo,Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! What Did I Do to Deserve This, Echochrome, Rain
