Max Watanabe is a modeler, writer and founder of Max Factory, one of Japan’s leading figure manufacturing companies. Starting his career as a writer at a young age, we will learn about the beginnings of Max Factory, which started as a gathering of friends in a small apartment. Max is also the inventor of the "figma" series, which still stands to this day at a big leap of innovation in the industry.
We will then head towards Yellow Submarine in Akihabara, a store specialized in figures and plastic models, that Max has known since the early days of Max Factory.
Besides being passionate for figures and plastic models, Max also actively practices triathlon, training at the Cittec cycling gym to improve his bike times, essential for a better race, one of which we followed Max to in Choshi, on the eastern side of Chiba prefecture.

It's funny, I just have this image in my head now that every company has a team of business men just soullessly crunching numbers all day to maximize sales. This guy just seems to really enjoy his craft, and isn't just taking a backseat when it comes to the production.
As a model maker myself I have to say that this was really beautiful. The cinematography felt like we were just a fly on the wall and un-obstructive to his daily life. Thanks for making this.
Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed!
Question, How does a company decide on which figure to make?
This episode is beautiful. Most of the figures I have are made by MaxFactory/GoodSmile and I never thought about the life of the people who made those figures, now I realize they still being humans with needs and problems they should face every day.
Thanks for making those documentaries about the people behind the culture we love :)
"I am probably not complete as a human being. I am missing something. This is why I add those things to make it better, or to complete myself. I guess that's it. I don't know..."
That kicked me in the feels.
So THIS is the man responsible for taking most of my money...
the ones who developed industrial 3d printers deserves some credit
He seems like a really good and interesting person! The things he says about balance and about not being "complete" sound very honest and relatable...Thanks for another great video!
So relatable indeed. Currently, I'm in a phase between "looking for something for everyone" and "being not complete". He was so damn honest, speaking about imperfection while running a successful company:) So much love for this man.
Max Watanabe sensei has always been a great inspiration to scale modellers like myself. I have great admiration and respect for this man: the modeller, the sculptor, the artist, the model company manager, the editor of Hobby Japan magazine and recently the triathlon participant. Thank you for sharing. Greetings from Malta.
Thank you, glad you liked it!
@@ArchipelDocumentaries You're welcome.
I love how real artists always manage to encapsulate their way of thinking about life when they talk about their craft.
Very inspiring video. Thanks for taking the time to make it.
Thanks for watching!
English and French subtitles are available under the “CC” menu. Chinese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish subtitles have also been made available through Community contributions, which are also open for additional language submissions. Thank you for following Archipel!
Do you know what music they're playing in the background and where we can download it?
Please interview someone from SNK next time i want to see Shinkiro, Ogura Eisuke, Nobuyuki Kuroki, Yasuyuki Oda
Excellent episode, I hope you can get shoji kawamori.
I have added Russian subtitles, please confirm. And thx for your work!
@Shiba Les sous-titres francais arriveront un peu plus tard dans la semaine!
The part about working with his dad to make plamodels while his mother was sick was just too precious man..
The guy's a legend, I've been a huge fan of his work since the early 90's when I used to buy Hobby Japan from Forbidden Planet. Great to see him painting a Space Marine too, he's clearly a fan of GW.
Love the humbleness. What a great man.
This was so beautiful. Thank you for sharing!!!
Thank you for watching!
This is the reason why I love japan.
I love that they do these amazing professional paint apps using all the same materials we model makers actually use. Very cool.
Thanks toco and Max. Max Factory is my favourite figure manufacturing, please release again the Kinu Nishimura Collection morrigan and sorceress :P regards from Mexico
The passion for art and creation is why I love this stuff it seems to be such a huge part of culture
Thanks for featuring people who had dedicated their lives on their crafts. Inspiring, its the small vivid memories from childhood that keep dreams and passion alive.
Thank you for watching!
Great video, impressive models. Very talented individual and group of people.
Those sculptures are exquisite. I used to make sculptures, and these ones have beautiful design and "movement" in them.
Well done
A truly wonderful video. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Thank you for watching!
I want to meet max watanabe, kunio okawara, hajime katoki, and kawaguchi meijin. I want to meet all of them, and develop mentor mentee relationship with them all too!

素晴らしい 👏👏👏
ありがとうございます🙏
普段プラモとか作らないけど、ホントに
職人ってカッコいいと思った。
職人ですよね・・・
This is real art👏I’m sorry but the same cannot be said about those hideous FUNKO POP “figures” 🤮
FACTS
There's a local collector's market that I've been frequenting since the 90's. Just a bunch of nerds in booths selling TCG, collectibles, old toys, japanese exclusives, pins, old music, etc. Every month that I go back, there's more and more funkopoop stores opening up and it's sickening to see real collectibles being phased out by these things. It's almost stopping me from going back there completely.
I don’t believe it, multiple people in the same place who share my views on funko pop. I can’t stand them and it feels like I’m the only one, glad to know I’m not.
@@fooglez It may be that the recent collectible line have more distributors and are very accessible to everyone.
I agree but why be childish and compare the 2, others like them why bash people’s likes
God I love this channel. It really teaches me *ALOT* . Hey when I become a pro tier artist in the next 10+ years when I move to Japan would you guys interview me? 😅
+Archipel Thank You so much for the material. I stumbled upon this by a chance but how much happiness it gave me oh man. Didn't know bout the connection between GSC & Max Factory. Wouldn't thought to immerse into M.F story by myself but glad I did now.
Sir Watanabe's is heart taking, this is what You call passion; success & friendship over 9000. Life, everyone wish to have.
Wonderful! Please do another modeler..
Merci beaucoup pour ce magnifique portrait :)
that was incredibly delicate and beautiful. thank you!
Thank you!
I've learnt a lot from modelling tutorial books written by Mr Watanabe in high school.
Even now I stop making models but the skills do help my career.
I'm learning so much from these. Thank you.
Happy we can help :)
Здравствуйте, спасибо. Отлично. Искать новое сохраняя традиции. Всему своё время и место. Извините
very inspiring , he is older than me but much fitter
Despite the fact that figmas have become imo too expensive over time for what they offer, I never ever doubted the amount of talent, dedication and straight out love that's put into them. Beautiful video and I hope the company continues to carry that legacy.
What an artist.
This was a fantastic video. Really insightful.
Thank you!

It does indeed look like a dream job.

I love the Berserk line of Figma made by Max factory. Btw, I will do some minor repaint for my Figma. I bought a Tamiya gloss acrylic paint. Who tried this on their figma for minor paint fix? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!
