  • Starting end 2016, we saw the release of a succession of Japanese games that were critically acclaimed both in Japan and overseas.
We met with some of their directors to discuss their views on this period and on the state of the Japanese game industry.
Features: Katsura Hashino (Persona 5, Atlus), Tetsuya Mizuguchi (Rez: Infinite, Enhance), Toshihiro Nagoshi (Yakuza 6, SEGA), Koshi Nakanishi (Resident Evil 7, Capcom), Yuya Tokuda (Monster Hunter: World, Capcom), Keiichiro Toyama (Gravity Rush 2, Sony Interactive Entertainment), Fumihiko Yasuda (Nioh, Koei Tecmo), Yoko Taro (NieR: Automata, Square Enix) & John Ricciardi (8-4)

The PS3/360 gen were dark times for Japanese game fans like myself. If it wasn't for handheld systems like the DS/PSP and 3DS/Vita it would have been terrible. Glad that around the PS4 generation there was a resurgence. The only negative part is that a lot of young people that maybe had the PS3/360 as their first generation of consoles have like 0 experience in Japanese games so almost 10 years of nothing is crazy considering most of us probably grew up during the SNES/PS1 or PS2 eras where it was common to own a lot of Western and Japanese developed games. Most young people last gen barely had any Japanese games in their collections so I feel like it was a detriment to their gaming experiences.

I totally agree I grew up at the end of the ps2 generation and the ps3 generation that dominated my childhood was wasted playing mostly copy pasted open world drivel, even the Wii suffered from this lack of creativity out of nintendo's lineup (which were subpar considering their track record) and it's caused a generation with a very poor taste in games (not even opinion I mean look at the consistent trend following of the west that has gained acclaim: FPS's, open worlds and now gruff dads with beards walking emotional time simulators)

      i'd kinda disagree ?
      there may have been less but the ones that were there were all amazing games, from action games like dmc4 and bayonetta to fighting games like the blazblue series/guilty gear coming back and of course jrpgs still going strong with the tales of series, ni no kuni and many one off games like catherine;
as someone who grew up in it i don't think that era could be called a dark time, what was there was more than enough to encourage you to go back as well.

What a great documentary! One tiny problem, though - where are Miyazaki-san (FromSoftware, Dark Souls), Suda-San (Grashopper Manufacture, Killer7) and Suehiro-san (White Owls Inc., Deadly Premonition)? They would have been a great addition to this conversation, because their games did well and had a great impact on the industry in those dark times (360/PS3) and beyond. Hope, you get to interview them in the future! Keep up the good work!

Well, as a men an gamer who grew up in the 90's, through the Ps1, N64, SNES, Ps2 era, i just skipped the Ps3 era partly because of what happened to the Japanese developer's at this time. I am a big fan of original games who are not shooter games or FPS and so on, neither MMO or crappy mobile games. I enjoy more a good old fashioned but original JRPG or action games 😀
I am really happy that the Japanese developers came back to their roots : they are Japanese not European or American. Now we have Nier automata, The last Guardian, Persona 5, Nioh, Rez infinite ( from the Ps2 era i think), Yakuza, Zelda Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Resident Evil 7, Bloodborne, and counting...
I love you guy's for those games 😂

I only wish you were able to include Hidetaka Miyazaki in this documentary as well especially since i think he is one of the most important Japanese creators that spearheaded this rebirth of Japanese game popularity in the West at a time when everyone (even some Japanese creators) were saying that "Japanese games are finished." What great video! I only wish From Software got involved. When the discussion revolved around the 2011-2012 era of mobile titles rising in dominance and the thought of consoles not having a future I just couldn't help but think of Dark Souls; how it really changed everything up. It was in 2011 and here was this big new Japanese vision.
However, I did get the impression that a lot of Japanese developers are in contact with each other, in particular the ones in this video. Perhaps From Software are a bit more isolated? I dunno.

Man, coming to PS3 from the PS1 and PS2 was like a slap in a face. I didn't know what was going on, it looked like they lost heart and soul. Sure there were some good ones, but they weren't owning a market anymore. You barely saw a Japanese title on a top 5 games of the year. A lot of titles were made to appeal to the west but they forgot that people who buy Japanese games play because they are Japanese games. I'm glad they are succeeding with the last two years and are on a rise again.

    • @SaberStash
      @SaberStash Před 5 lety +1

It's not gonna happen for anime unfortunately, things are only going to get worse as the industry continues to be as chaotic and unstable as ever. The recent wave of anime over production, especially from later 2017-2018 has been absolutely devastating for the overall consistency and quality of seasonal anime, pair that with the death of disc and bluray sales and let's not forget the recent reliance on very unstable foreign streaming money that could be cut off at any point. Not to mention that most original anime productions end up being disasters, and as usual, the industry focuses mostly on manga/LN adaptations and terrible mobile game anime.

It seems like in the last 2 - 3 years people are gotten way more connected and are more aware of what is going on in the world when it comes to things like politics and media now more then ever. There are a lot of games that if they came out now they would perform a lot better such as Vanquish and the No More Heroes series. This is also the same thing with films as well. I think if Dredd came out now it would have made a lot more money, especially after the success of Deadpool

I loved this episode but I feel that there are a couple of topics that weren`t addressed enough, like game design itself, maybe dig a little more on that "attention to detail" they mentioned but specifically attention to detail when it comes to game design. Maybe these smaller companies I mentioned could give us an even deeper understanding about the differences between Japanese and Western game design philosophies.

I hope things stay this way and that Japanese devs don't make the same mistake again by trying to appeal to Westerners. Keep Japanese games Japanese please, since Western ones are really terrible and only becoming worse and worse, especially when it comes to big AAA titles, occasionally there will be an indie game that is great, but for each one of those you have hundreds of downright terrible and forgettable ones.

In the future, I hope we see more IP revivals, like Grandia, Suikoden, Chrono, Shining Force, etc. But, it is important that they stay true to what those series are. Meaning, let Turn-Based games be Turn-Based games. Otherwise, there's no point in reviving them. If they want to make action games, they should either make new IPs, or revive action IPs.

Problem with last gen is that portable console and mobile games is dominating in Japan. Wii graphic is way behind PS3/X360 and most 3rd party games not doing well for Wii. PS3 is harder to develop and expensive. At same time X360 failed in Japan but X360 is outselling PS3 in some countries like US, UK. So, Japanese developer had to choose between PS3 or X360 as their lead console and at same time they need to develop games for portable console to maintain sales in Japan. But now situation is different. 3DS at end of its lifetime, Vita is not doing well. Switch can play as both home/portable console and graphic is just as good if not better than its competitor. PS4 and XOne use similar architecture and PS4 is dominating. So, Japanese developer can focus most of their resource making one games and port them to all platforms. Mobile game is huge but Japanese developer realized than mobile games wont last long and will be dead once hype gone.

I completely agree with everything these wonderful people are saying
I'd take a detailed, stylised game with a nonsensical plot and smaller scale over a million western open worlds with countless hours of unthoughtful drivel and busywork made for the sole reason of making the publisher more fat stacks

Yeah, I hate the emphasis on "realism" and profit in most of western video games. Reality should be the foundation to build up fantasy/sci-fi. There's no reason fantasy/sci-fi has to obey the laws of reality.

I remember that period of Japanese games as when a bunch of weird remakes and sequels were coming out that people wanted to play but couldn't because they were on the DS/PSP. And console games were either samey and niche jrpgs, or skewed in the complete opposite direction for BROWN.

wow.. so this is what it means when they say Japan is a "high-context" place. I thought they just don't like speak directly and just leave things to interpretation... and that the recipient is the one responsible for knowing the context of their conversation.
Now, i realize it also means spurring imagination, in the fewest words and artwork possible.
