  • This week I'm going to talk about the worst car I've ever owned, the Honda S2000. This car is deceptively slow and is not that great in the corners. I know that the S2K has a loyal group of fans and follower, so get your torches and pitch forks ready, because I'll tell you why this car is not only disappointing, but also dangerous.

    I have been a wrench head for years. I started off with building a 69 Camaro, then moved on to Miatas, followed by my first turbo car a 97 Eclipse GSX. After than I moved on to a Honda S2000, then my first MKIV Supra, then a 2010 Camaro, FD RX-7, R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R and my second Supra. I am now the owner of a 2013 Nissan GT-R Black Edition. I love JDM cars and would like to share that enthusiasm with all of you. I will be do car reviews, how to videos and opinions based on personal experience with those legendary JDM tuner cars. I tend to do almost all of the work on the car my self. This comes from a budgetary need as well as a lack of trust of mechanics in general. Working on cars are not has hard as people think, and I hope to show you that you can do it as well, regardless of your experience.

    Sometimes you come across a review that's so off base, you have to wonder if this person has actually used the product. Let's go to the "cons" one-by-one. 1: "It's slow". There is no context to generic terms like "slow". "Slow" compared to what? Is a P-51 "slow" because it is outperformed by an F-16? I expect car guys to be a bit more sophisticated than "slow"/"fast" type of descriptions. 2: "Nothing you can do to make it faster(sic)" (in reference to the F20C engine)- Well, ummmm, it's because the Honda engineers totally maximized the potential of a 2 liter naturally aspired engine. Give credit where it's due. There's a reason why this car held the record for the most HP/liter for years. 3: "Not a great handling car"......Laughter has placed IPA all over my monitor. I'll leave it at that. Cool story about the Miatas tho :) 4: "Dangerous in how well it does not handle"-- Again, the car is capable only to the extent of the driver is. Still cleaning beer off my screen. 5: "Electronic steering"-This perhaps may be a legitimate gripe, but you went into a weird tangent about being "slower than the driver", and the "you had no counter steer". As an AP1 owner, I have to say, I haven't the slightest idea what you're talking about. I counter steer on the regular, and as long as you don't lift off the throttle, the S2K obeys. You do seem genuine, however, so thanks for an interesting video.

    I totally understand where this guy is coming from but let’s just be clear here the Honda S 2000 was never made to be daily driven. The Honda engineers design this car for track purposes and track only reasons. No obviously over the years Mani have used his car as a daily driver because they forget how practical it is or how it’s only a two seater and enjoy the car for what it’s worth. It’s a VTEC Screamin convertible which is one of a kind. I would daily drive it too🤷🏻‍♂️. Just pure gold by Honda.

      its not supposed to be 'fast' or 'grippy' either but this guy is knocking it for reasons that the car wasn't made for, it's not as fast as a modded tuner and it's not grippy cause we like to break the tail loose while going chill speeds, it's a FUN car not a FAST car, and still man it is fast, it is a tuned machine, it is perfectly done. the irony is he does this vid standing next to a nissan gtr which is the same thing as s2k in the sense that it's a precision tuned car perfectly done off the factory line and there's a hundred cars out there that will go faster than it and can accept more tuning wut

    Its a great feeling car to drive but that is about it. I haven't had much problem with the eas being slow or stoping correction but when I just started to bring the car to the autocross it was definitely a handfull to drive fast because other than the small powerband you need to be on the ball 24/7 since you need to correct way faster than a longer wheel base car. Its definitely really slow off the line, and visibility with the top up is horrible but when you take a night drive with the top off its probably the most relaxing thing to after finals or work.

    Yeah you should have driven an AP2 lol no such thing as snap oversteer. My AP2 is the second best handling car that I’ve owned. First being the C6 Z06, and I still don’t miss that Corvette one bit. It all comes down to personal preference and driving ability of course, but you should honestly revisit the platform. It might surprise you on how well it’s aged.

    • @JDArcher
      @JDArcher  Před 3 lety

      I'd heard the fixed the steering with the AP2, but with out driving one I didn't want to comment on that. To be honest if I was going to go back to a platform it would probably be the FD. That car can handel and it can put down the power

    • @Shogun9300
      @Shogun9300 Před 3 lety

      @@JDArcher okay well now I question if you just don’t like the S2000 period because stock for stock, the FD RX7 and S2000 are nearly identical. Only difference between them being the power band. In fact, most cars from that era were “slow”. Well, whatever, your bias is your own I suppose.

    • @JDArcher
      @JDArcher  Před 3 lety

      @@Shogun9300 I would severely argue about the handling capabilities of the S2K matching the FD. Here again, based on my 3 three years of owning a AP1 and about 5 years of owning the FD. The S2K is plagued with the electronic steering system. The center of mass is also an issue with the S2K. The FD has out cornered any car I've owned so far and this is because of a few reasons. (1) the FD is just way lighter than most cars. This means it can brake later going into the curves. Also this means that it can carry more speed through the corner because the tires don't have to work as hard to keep static friction. (2) It's smaller. This means that is can use up more of the road. Using the high, low high, in its simplicity the FD can straighten out the corners more, thereby also allowing it to hold more speed through the turn. (3) The FD has a double offset A-arm suspension on the rear. When the car corners the suspension load causing the a-arms to align and creating a form of all wheel steering.
      As to the speed stock for stock, the FD is fairly quick by comparable standards because of it's weight to power ratio. Just like how a miata only has around 185 hp, becuase the car is so light that 185 hp is equivalent to much high HP in heavier car.
      To clarify though, I don't hate the S2K, but based on the list of cars I've owned it was the worst of the batch. However to help understand my list of cars is thus:
      1) 1969 Camaro
      2) 1992 Miata
      3) 1994 Miata
      4) 1997 Eclipse GSX (AWD)
      5) 2000 S2K
      6) 1995 Supra TT 6-Spd
      7) 2010 Camaro (most boring car I've owned)
      8) 1993 Rx7
      9) 1989 R32 Skyline GT-R
      10) 1994 Supra TT 6-Spd
      11) R35 GT-R
      So based on my history the S2k had some pretty stiff competition to be compared to.

    • @Xxyion86
      @Xxyion86 Před 3 lety +2

      @@JDArcher This response makes me think maybe there was something wrong with your car. You talk about weight and how the FD is lighter than most cars. The FD is around 2866 lbs, the S2000, especially an AP1, was 2813 lbs. So nearly identical. The S2k and the FD also both have a 50/50 weight distribution.
      That being said, i have heard from many FD owners that the FD is a relatively easy car to handle. The learning curve is a lot less steep than a lot of cars of that era and with the engineering that Mazda did to the car, allowed to to be a beast on the road and the track.
      On the flip side, the S2000 is NOT an easy car to drive. It WONT save you if you mess up a corner and punishes you severely. Because of that a lot of people either become timid when pushing the car to its limit as the limit can be a LOT higher than most other cars.
      As an example, i own a 2021 A91 Supra, and a 2005 AP2 S2k. Hands down the S2k is the better handling car. However i'm faster in the Supra. Not because the Supra has double the power, but because the S2k challenges me more and punishes me harder when i make a mistake. Its so much less forgiving in almost every single scenario. I also have quire an extensive car history (also had a Eclipse but it was the GST) and the S2k by far has been the most challenging car i've ever owned.

      @JDArcher  Před 2 lety

      Ok, so I like your criticism because it goes to prove something very import. Not every car is going to be loved by every driver. That is why there are so many platforms out there. My biggest issue with the S2K was the electronic steering assist. Now once again, this goes to AP1 because that is what I had and not AP2. But the steering was so bad I once spun the car hard shifting from second to third on PIR. And when it spins, it spins like a top due to its center of mass. The lack of counter steer was a real issue and I never felt safe in it. Moving from the S2K to the MKIV Supra was an ah ha moment when I did. I forgot what it was like to drive a truly planted car at that time.
      When I had the S2K this was a known issues. The only way to pix it at the time was to replace the entire steering system with one out of a FC RX7. That was what power house racing and horse power freaks were doing to make the car a better corning car. For me it was just easier to get out of the platform
