It's a fair test that shows how much of the rev range is useful - sure it may have 240hp or whatever at 8000+rpm, but would you want to drive a car that needs to be downshifted each time you want to accelerate? Also think about that - small fuel tank + needing high revs all the time = what?

He also floors it up the peak of the power curve later in the video, and while it pulls better, all the other cars shown absolutely walk away... the test was perfectly valid, it just offends preconceptions that put the car on a podium for being an icon, even with a race driver taking many laps to hone track times, the S2000 was NEVER a particularly fast car, like the Maiata (MX5 in other regions) that wasn't the point, it was fun to steer and shift hard at comparatively low speeds on twisty back rounds and mountain passes... stock its a dead fish on the US highway filled with large displacement V8 barges.

Rob, I’ve been following you for 14 years now and I have a lot of respect for what you have to say, but you missed the mark on this one.
Straight line speed isn’t the point of this car, and you’re certainly not going to be fast when you’re in 6th gear. The car has 162 lb. ft. of torque.
It’s also not a GT car. Personally I completely disagree about how comfortable the seats are, but its primary focus isn’t to be comfortable like an S Class.
I’d encourage you to drive one on a backroad or on a track, or just actually make more of an effort to wind it out around town. I’ve dailied mine for three and a half years now and the shortcomings are more than enough made up for by how fun it is to drive. And it can be fun to drive around town if you drive it correctly.

I was literally the very next person to rent this very same S2000 (it's a 2004), from Friday the 30th of April to Sunday May 2nd. From Edwin M.! Per my pictures, I dropped it off with 67420 miles on it after staying in Rockford for a few days for a wedding. Cool coincidence!
Funny thing, I had the exact opposite experience. What brought me to this video is that I'm actually in the market for an S2000 as a direct result of having rented it on this trip. I had previously paid no attention to these; I'd always dismissed it on the assumption that it was a FWD like most Hondas. I rented it because I was traveling with my 7yo daughter and wanted to give her a fun ride, and that's exactly what we got. She loved it, and so did I.
BTW, you left that Pepperidge Farm bag under the passenger seat ;o)

Many people are commenting that, and I'm guessing yall didn't actually watch the video much further, since when the other cars line up for a highway pull he nails nearly at peak power (saying "and before anybody comments, even with Vtech, its still slow)... and sure enough the other cars walk away like he'd forgotten to take it off cruise control. At nearly 100miles and hour there just isn't much acceleration out a bone stock 2L naturally aspirated car designed mid 90's... this is the most power of that niche, but above 60mph the cheap and boring cars of 2-3x its engine displacement do just pull a lot harder even for the same vintage. The S2000 in stock trim would feel amazing top down on a tight canyon road... but commuting on the highway its just slow to a modern audience, and shifting like your trying to race just doesn't make that enjoyable, even if its mildly less lethargic when you do.

While i cruised on the highway at about 70 i could have easily down shifted from 6th to 4th without over revving the car. It still isnt going to blow the doors off anything but its has some decent acceleration if you keep it above 6k rpm. He also needs to drive the AP2. Has more torque from the 2.2L

It might not have been on ferraris radar but making the most power per liter is on the agenda of every sportscar maker who makes NA engines. The F20C was only possible due to Hondas superior F1 experience and knowledge combined with their mass production experience. The F20C is basically a racing engine which is also very reliable. It‘s easy to create more hp per liter but it‘s not easy to make a high rev engine reliable. Thats what most sportscar manufacturers lack. Many materials used on this engine have never been used in a mass produced car.
