    This video contains:
    1) Levitating Teapot Fountain: water flows continuously from a small teapot seemingly floating in air. What physics do you think is involved in this battery powered fountain? Physics fun for 4/1!
    (Tricked revealed - 08:15)
    2) Polage Display: art with polarized light using polarizing sheets and cellulose to create changing forms and colors.
    3) Arrow on Möbius Strip: on the geometry of a Möbius strip a right pointing arrow points left after one trip around, a second trip restores the original orientation.
    4) CMYK Coasters: physics and psychophysics of four color printing demonstrated with acrylic slides that assemble to reveal Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring". Cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (key) comprise the elements of the subtractive color model used in most color printing. Repost of the “most liked” post of 2016!
    5) RGB Additive Color Mixing Demo:
Mixing Red, Green, and Blue to create Yellow, Magenta, and Cyan with the following mixings: R+G=Y, G+B=C, and R+B=M. Adding all three R+G+B produces White.
    6) Total Solar Eclipse Bookmark: this book features a wonderful use of lenticular animation to show the stages of a total solar eclipse- full sun, partial, diamond ring, and the solar corona as seen in full totality. With a Full Moon last night we are now just 14 days away from the North American Eclipse!
    7) Hexagonal Lens Array
    8) Curta Calculator: before the electronic calculator there was this device that was portable, powered by hand, and could calculate to a precision of 15 decimal places! This is the Type 2 model and it was made in 1962 and still works beautifully. Demonstrated here is how to multiply two large numbers- for fun let’s pick 3803 x 32463. Although the process is not as simple as pressing buttons, the steps are intuitive: First, set in the largest number using the sliders on the side. Next we now multiply that number using each digit of the smaller number and move the top “carriage” to note the place values of each digit. Placing the carriage on 4 will multiply the side number by 1000 for each turn, so we turn the crank 3 times. Following this pattern we then place the carriage on 3 and turn the crank 8 times to multiply by 800, and finally we place the carriage on 1 and turn the crank 3 more times. The number 3803 now appears on the top silver readout, and the result, 123,456,789 is read off the top black output register. From this demonstration we see that the number of crank turns needed is just the sum of the digits of the smaller number (14 for this calculation)- some effort but better than multiplication long hand and with much less chance of mistakes! The device is cleared by lifting the carriage and swinging the clearing ring around once. Invented by Curt Herzstark and manufactured from 1947-1972, these devices are mechanical wonders with over 700 precision components.
    9) Fruit Basket Hyperboloid: 14 straight rods are arranged to reveal a hyperboloid, the 3D surface traced by revolving a diagonal(skew) line, the outline of which is the conic section of the hyperbola. An affordable doubly ruled surface for any table- great for fruit or mathematical holiday decor.
    10) Thermocromic Eclipse Postage Stamps
    11) Sand Shaker (exploratorium): a thin layer of white sand is subjected to vibrations on top of a circular plate in this exhibit created by artist Charles Sowers at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. When granular substances like sand are rapidly shaken, they often take on the properties of fluids through a process called vibrofluidization. Strange non-Newtonian fluid behavior is seen in this sand when the frequency of vibration is adjusted to 16Hz (shown here in 240fps slow motion)- amazing complexity arising from simple and regular motion! 🌟 With special thanks to the Exploratorium!
    12) Frozen Moment in Time
    13) Antique Moiré Easter Card

I like that quote, "Science is the poetry of reality." I always appreciated Richard Dawkins for his disdain of creationism/intelligent design.

My grade 7 science Professor Dr. Barton (he liked being called Dr.) had all kinds of weird gadgets like these in the class. He was really hairy like a human Sasquatch but he taught science like Bill Nye, really enthusiastic, he was a good teacher, too bad I only took his class for 1 year before moving to another city.
