👉🏻Memory Spring: some special alloys of brass can be made to have a shape memory triggered by temperature. These springs quickly change their length from 1 cm to 2.5cm when heated above 90 C (done here with hot water) and just as quickly shrink back to original size when cooled (immersed in cold water). Useful in many applications, especially things like automatic fire sprinkler valves and thermostats in car engines. This amazing property is related to a solid state phase transition similar to that of Nitinol wire called a Martensitic transformation.
👉🏻 The Civilized Glass: a most elegant version of the famous Pythagorean cup. Functions as a normal glass, but if the glass is filled above the top of the central column a siphoning effect is triggered and all the contents in the glass drains out the bottom through the hollow stem.
👉🏻 Thermochromic Liquid Crystal “Mood” Necklace: heat from a hand brings out the temperature dependent color change of the liquid crystal- the chemical formulation used in this pendant is especially dramatic from yellow to violet. The molecules of the liquid crystal change orientation and spacing during the phase transition from liquid (warm) to crystal (cool). The molecular configuration shift allows for different diffraction effects producing the color shift.
👉🏻 CineSpinner Pencil Topper: motion animation from Moiré pattern effects of constructive and deconstructive interference.
👉🏻 Invisible Ink and UV Pen: this pen utilizes a clear ink that when dry is barely noticeable, but contains fluorescent compounds that reveals its presence under long wave ultraviolet light.
👉🏻 Pixelated Playing Cards: what one sees is all about the lighting with this transparent deck of cards.
👉🏻 Quantum Re-Excitation: a green laser should not normally be able to induce a phosphorescent glow, but if the material is already excited a green laser can re-excite it as seen here.
👉🏻 Fresnel Divergent Lens: flat sheet of lenses and a desert sunset. Spring break in Death Valley.
👉🏻 Novatrope: this electro-kinetic sculpture uses strobing LEDs to animate a fractal inspired spiral geometry- similar to a 3D zoetrope.
👉🏻 Spherical Lens: an 11cm in diameter sphere of fused quartz. Telescope Peak as refracted through a crystal ball from the vantage point of the Devil's Golf Course. From a road trip to Death Valley National Park last year.
👉🏻 Sail Boats by Otagiri: 1970s kinetic art. A delicate balance of torques and a low center of mass lend to this curious motion. Could not resist including the USB fan 😬.
👉🏻 Moiré Kinetic Coasters: various patterns of overlaid curved spokes rotate and produce interesting illusions of motion via moiré interference effects.
👉🏻 Primed Siphon: liquid moves until the water levels are equal- curious combination of the effects of gravity, molecular cohesion, and atmospheric pressure.
👉🏻 Rocking Seagull Kinetic Art: counterbalanced seagull figures swing back and forth, each with a different period of oscillation in this vintage Otagiri sculpture from 1980.
    👉🏻 Parabolic burn mirror

That glass uses something called Archimedes' siphon, or the Greedy Siphon. One of these can be found in your washing machine, where the fabric conditioner goes. Go fill it with water and when it gets past the max mark it will trigger the siphon and drain all the water out.

The last siphon would have been useful in my childhood, where we split sodas. It just has to be the same type of glass.😊

All good stuff. I seem to remember Edmund's Scientific selling sheets of Fresnel lenses in the 70's or 80s? And I know they sold a parabolic mirror like that :)

Science is a way of life. Science is a perspective. Science is the process that takes us from confusion to understanding in a manner that's precise, predictive and reliable - a transformation, for those lucky enough to experience it, that is empowering and emotional..

When backlit these poker sized cards become simply a grid of dots- reminding us that what we see not only concerns the physical properties of the perceived object, but also the location of the light source and the frequency and intensity of its emissions.
