  • The NBA Media’s Hate of International Players…
    This Video:
Joel Embiid, Luka Doncic. Nikola Jokic, and Giannis Antetokounmpo are all international NBA players. Two of them have won back to back MVP awards, but all these players catch constant disrespect from the NBA media despite making up the NBA's top 7 players currently. From Colin Cowherd disrespecting Embiid, to Luka pre draft takes by Max Kellerman, Stephen A Smith, and Skip Bayless that were just awful, to the hateful comments by Nick Wright to Jokic, and of course the Giannis disrespect saying he can't be the face of the league because he isn't American! This is xenophobia in the NBA media that has to stop (because Victor Wembenyama is on his way!)

Giannis and Jokic are two European players who came from humble beginnings, now flashy mixtapes, no media hype, and most importantly they were not part of the American system (college etc). They rose due to hard work and ethic, and the American media cannot forgive them that. They have also stayed humble and do not embrace the ''American culture'', are not buddy buddies with other players and they talk through their games, so they generate little to no media attention.
As for Doncic, he is again not a part of their system and they wanted him to fail, in order to prove that European basketball is weak. In the case of Jokic and Doncic there is also some racism involved as we talk about two relatively unathletic white dudes who have taken the league by storm.
This is why the media try to also push the narrative of the next American superstar (zion for example). Cause they cant stand that the best players right now are European and not part of their machine

I always laugh at the "athleticism" thing. To me it just means you can jump a bit higher, maybe you're a bit faster.
Athleticism doesn't cover footwork, strength, stamina, and both Jokić and Luka got those in spades.
Both are the strongest physically at their respective positions, they can play for a long freaking time(Jokić even broke some record in that regard while he was still fat), both of their footwork is great, plus they are smarter than any other player in the entire league.
Jokić can run the game on brains alone and he does sometimes, and he's unstoppable while doing it.
They are way, way more tactically and fundamentally sound than 99.9 percent of players in the NBA and they are the living proof you don't need to jump high to play basketball. All you need is a brain.

What Luka accomplished in his European career will not be done again. The kid is a prodigy, you had to be stupid and blind not to see it... it is uncanny.

To them, you gotta be on the highlight reel, have a massive social media presence, and care about what they have to say about your game. Instead of celebrating dudes like jokic, Giannis, luka and embiid for the uniqueness of their games and how good they are, the media (save for Zach Lowe, he’s a real one) discredits each of them because they don’t pop off and talk shit after every made basket and make a big deal about it on social media. Lastly, jokic deserves way more respect then he’s currently getting. Dude is basically what sabonis would’ve been if the USSR didn’t fuck his knees up and allowed him to play when he was in his early 20s. Weirdest thing he's gonna play for French national team at EuroBasket, because people from all countries who were European colonies have automatic right to citizenship from country that colonized their country in the past. Cameroon was French colony in the past. The same way Ibaka played for Spain. So technically Joel is more European than American. Lauri Markkanen also came to USA right after highschool, as 19 years old kid in 2016 and played college basketball, very similar like Joel, nobody considers him American. Only foreign players that are considered as "Americans"were Rik Smits and Detlef Schremph, since they played full college years and were mostly products of American basketball. Joel could drop into that category, but mostly why Media tries to hype him because NBA is trying desperately to expand at African market and they think having African player as one of the faces of the league would help in that, similar like they did with Yao Ming and China. What they don't get Africa is actually continent with 55 different countries and languages, people from Tunis, Algeria, Egypt, Uganda, Morocco etc etc don't care about some Cameroon's basketball player. Basketball isn't football where people from whole Africa care about some football Superstar from Africa, like they were care for George Weah, Didier Drogba or Samuel Eto'o. That's why even Joel decided to play for France, because that's his biggest chance to participate at Olympics. And since France become Africa 2.0 in all sports (here in Europe we make fun about them all the time), that won't be problem for French basketball Association.

The US used to sit on their "guaranteed" advantage. Now the rest of the world has better training facilities and as the world is getting more able to fly to the USA people who would have been what-ifs are realizing their love of the game. And the US doesn't know what to do about that.

Well I'm french... And while I don't want to comment the Gobert-Mitchell-Shaq-US Media situation, or the fact Tony Parker was put out of the 75 best players list, I'd say the first problem with US Media is their laziness. The opening of the NBA is like the discovery of America : they have to widen their horizon in a way that needs to drastically change their perspective on the entire world. It means for example to learn to follow Euroleague to understand new prospects, 17 year old kids, and not just look at some games from Auburn / NC / Duke / Kansas etc to understand the draft...

Was waiting for someone to finally call this out, great video. I think the main reason there is hate on foreign players is because the nba has for the last 30 years promoted the sport to intertwine with hip hop culture and these foreigners don’t represent that. This is why Dirk never got the respect he truly deserved. A lot of writers and fans are upset so many foreign (White) players are changing the NBA landscape and it’s no longer the street ball game it was 15 years ago. I’ve also heard people complain about there being a lot more players coming in who are half black/white and if you look at the mothers who are white, they are usually former college athletes. I have a theory about this but might come off as racist since it’s a reverse Jimmy the Greek theory.

That Lillard or Anthony Davis are there is pure marketing strategy for the league.
