In this series of video's I discuss 1 or 2 woodworking tools and give you an honest opinion if it is a woodworking tool you can consider or you better leave it alone.
in this video, I compare, the Chinese T-ruler with the Incra T-ruler. And I review an Angle ruler or combination square.
I have a lot of woodworking tools from China. I bought them all on Banggood.com. But you can buy them probably also from sites like alibaba.com, Aliexpress.com, and Ebay.com
I have a good experience with Banggood.com and they have a lot of woodworking tools nicely organized on their site.
In this video, I show you a product that is known as:
Drillpro Alloy T-160 Measuring Ruler

Drillpro Angle Ruler

Hey Dennis,
I'm a retired engineer that has had a lifelong love affair with tools. When I stumbled into this series of China Woodworking Tools, I immediately knew that I was going down this rabbit hole with a big grin on my face. After 2 completed episodes, I'm not disappointed in the least. Thanks for the great idea as well as your relaxed, intelligent and informative approach to the series. I know I'm going to have a blast viewing every episode you've done.
Cheers Mate!!
I’ve been looking to kit out enough basic tools to make some simple home furniture, I was looking at a few of the woodpecker ones and just couldn’t justify the cost for just a hobby, so I looked to China, and this has convinced me the quality will be good enough for my needs.
I appreciate your honesty.
the things that i bought on your video recommendations, absolutely love them. you helped me save money and spend on the right product. Thanks a lot
Thanks for the in-depth reviews, and for doing them in multiple languages. Looking forward to more.
Thanks Scott, I appreciate your response.
Has numerous details in this woodwork book t.co/oLg9l5gL3F . The book also displays several designs and descriptions on the materials used for various woodworking processes and also the guidelines on completing various procedures appropriately. In other words, I`m happy using this book, especially in the process of learning about wood working.?
Thanks so much for showing these off man! I would be interested in seeing all of the china tools you have, because most of these i have looked at purchasing! Thanks again, great video!!
I hope to upload a new video soon. Do you have any suggestion what you like to see!
Awesome review, honesty goes a long way. Thnks mate
Your vids are the best I've seen very useful.
Excellent reviews... Thanks
Its good that you show us products that don't work, so we don't make the same mistake by buying them
Hi Cristian, Yes, perhaps not that exciting then a nice product that is totally Awesome. Also not for me to talk about. But like I say in the Video, china tools are not all fairy tails. Thanks for your reply and letting me know you appreciate it!
these are awesome video thanks for showing us affordable options.
Great review you are absolutely right about that combination square it looks very nice but that simple play means a lot to me and my projects since it's about accuracy so i will settle for the normal combination square thanks again
Yet again you are a star Dennis, The detail you go into is for beginners like me, this is excellent data. Already created an Excel sheet for the series. 😂🤣
Great reviews and comparing with Incra is just right. I am right now deciding between drillpro and incra and this video is invaluable. Subscribed.
Thanks so much for the information
Thank you Mr!!!
Thanks Ricardo
Good review! Was on the fence what to get, so decided on the incra.
I really liked your clear and concise presentation.
Thx
Bernhard
Hi Bernhard, the Incra is a good choice!
@@HookedonWood Well, good thing that I watched all your tool reviews before I actually ordered....ended up ording the Banggood version 20 and 40 cm)...and the Kerf tool.
Thanks again for your eviews!
Cheers,
Bernhard
I just stumbled upon your channel and you have great content. You have yourself a new subscriber. Greetings from Portugal!
Excellent reviews! Detailed and relevant. I have an Incra t-rule and love it. Only downside is that the .05 led breaks frequently and you can't use thicker lead. Subscribed.
Hi. I 100% agree with you. Watch also Episode 4. I like the bigger marks of the INCRA but the "NEW" T-ruler I review is also very nice. I find it very nice that this one has longer alongated holes. This way I can easily find a line if I want to make some marks on it. I would INCRA make it that way. Thanks for you comment and thanks for subscribing.
Nice Video!
The Incra rulers are worth every penny. Super precise thanks to it's fractions of mm increments.
Thanks for the review.
I didn`t intend to utilize this woodworking website, *TopFineWoodworking. Com* but rather curious about it. I was truly impressed after trying it. I was looking to find out more about the art of woodworking, and was not dissatisfied. I found several topics such as wood types and designing your workshop.
@@robbinssherman4451 Thumbs down! That site is just a cheap facade for a paywall site selling plans you can get fro free elsewhere. The name is also a rip of finewoodworking.com which is a real site.
I'm a new wood worker, but since I've made and sold a table and a few picture frames… that makes me a professional somewhat. That said your videos explain things well and I'm gonna go with the china version because I'm not very delicate with my tools yet.
Thanks for sharing your information 👍🏾
"Professional" just means you were paid for your work. It speaks nothing of quality. There are good and bad professionals, as well as good and bad hobbyists. 👍
The second I saw the sliding square and I was able to see how it is tightened down, I knew there was a problem. Most sliding squares have a mechanism that pulls the sliding rule into the seats.
You could fashion a wedged bushing to force the rule onto the seats. Next drawback will be the soft aluminum is likely to gall from the wedge and seats. Another reason sliding rules are made from hardened and ground steel. At least the goods ones.
Nice looking tool. Could be good if made from better materials and an improved design.
I own both Woodpeckers and Incra versions of the T-rules. I too find that the thin leads they demand break too easily in many applications. I had given up on using them, opting instead to use the end of my Starrett combination square for parallel scribing. But I think I may buy one like you show, specifically for rougher wood.
Hi Michael, I can understand you. When working with MDF and fineer the 0.5 points works fine, but other then that, it breaks easy.
Thin leads? Doesn't the Woodpeckers version accommodate 1.0mm leads?
I'm a union carpenter. I do 50 hours of woodworking every week, year after year, and I mainly use a 0.5 mm for everything besides OSB.
@@gellotion I too have used 0.5 mm (Pentel P205) for almost 50 years for most trim and shop work with tightly grained species light enough in color that I can see a dark line, for example, maple solids or birch plywood, etc. But my experience has been that unfinished grainy wood like red oak, which we use quite a bit in my market, can cause the lead to break easily. Also, I find it unnatural to hold the pencil nearly vertical to make the tip fit inside the little holes, which I notice is the technique used in the Woodpecker videos.
Generally, I like to settle on a single tool capable of handling the vast majority of variations of any given task, and then learn to play that tool like a musical instrument. So their limited applications and resultant frequent need for a similar tool are what put me off of the Incra and Woodpeckers versions many years ago. But I will dig one of them out this weekend and give it a try per your suggestion. I don't believe they will take a 1 mm lead, but maybe I just never tried. I know that Woodpecker sells mechanical pencils for their tools that are larger diameter than 0.5 mm, but I don't think it's by that much. Good to share views with another old hand.
I can't seem to find the first episode regarding the kerfmaker. Has it been scrapped?
Excellent in-depth reviews. Of course the play in the square is inexcusable, but would it be possible to fashion and add a UHMW or other thin plastic interface piece between blade and stock to eliminate the play and salvage its use as a good square for yourself? (I am thinking of the type of plastic piece that Stabila uses between sliding aluminum parts of their telescopic levels, 106T and XTL.)
If you use an extra plastic ring that pressure a bit more on a larger area that would also help for shifting. When you push it against the bar it is straight. If you aware of that, it is workable. But again, you do not see it with your naked eye when it has shift.
@@HookedonWood I can't see the interface between blade and stock in the video, but generally speaking, the way I try to deal with such issues of fit involves mating tapers and/or interference fits (in cases where plastics are used.) For a precision requirement like this square would have, I would not want to count on friction alone, no matter how strong.
Along these lines, Woodpeckers has announced a new One-Time Tool, a series of combination squares with positive detentes every 5 degrees. The 100% reliability of all the Woodpecker stuff makes it a bit challenging to resist paying their high price... but there are always ways to engineer precision without buying it from others if one can see clearly the logic of the structures required.
You are doing nice work I like your efforts and also the devices, Thank you for this video
Pull the line the other way from you on the red T square. I do like the incra stuff much.
Exactly what I was thinking. Start the line at the T edge, don't pull it towards the T edge.
Also wondering if the Woodpecker version has the same issue, or if their T edge sits below the edge of the workpiece
Hi Dennis! Can I ask you, where is China Tools Ep1? Don't see one...
Episode 1 with the kerfmaker the link comes up as being private when I follow the link
I too would like to see the kerfmaker video. Thank you! I have also subscribed to this great channel :-)
Yes, I came here to see where episode 1 went also.
HI , love your reviews. What happened to Episode 1. Has it been taken down
Never mind, I clicked your link in the description and found it. I have one on the way from Bangood. Appreciate your reviews.
If you bought the Kerfmaker, I think you will be very impressed. It is a very nice unit.
Thanks for watching my video's
Dennis
I have the black speed square too.
Nice square. Check it on a regular basis for accuracy, if it fall it easely shifts out of line. Greetings Dennis
Great films. Where is china 1 to find? Do you have a link?
Hi Marco ,
czcams.com/video/rYnU6n1Uk30/video.html
At this date, in Australia, it's cheaper to buy the Incra T-ruler.
Customers are complaining on banggood that the newer small tsquare model doesn't come with any marking. Only the large one comes with markings.
I have read about it in some reviews. I do not know how banggood deals with these failures? Without marking, it is pretty much useless.
Put your t-ruler against the top instead of bottom of your material then you won’t have to turn your pencil in such a way to get to the edge of your material with your lead.
You are right. Thanks.
The Incra has a 1mm resolution on both the outsides, but also an 0,25mm resolution on the inside scale...
Hi Stijn, you are right and I did not mention this in this video. So good that you comment it. In episode 4 i dive further in the incra vs new ruler
Aliexpress is also selling the incra clone.
Have you looked at radius router templates
Yes, on my site you see an overview of all the products I tested and in which episode. hookedonwood.online/China-Tools-Ranking/
What Square do u recommend?
Hi Joalo, That is a difficult question.
I had a Crown. www.feinewerkzeuge.de/winkel.html
I like it, but it was a little bit to big for my apron. Other thing is that I trust it when use the inside Angle. But to put it down and measure if something is 90 degrees from the outside, I do not know if this is accurate because it stands on its wooden side. So now I have a Bridge City square. www.gereedschappro.nl/artikel/9958/bridge-city-tool-works-ts-1v2-try-square-128mm-blokhaak.html
I like it, but it has 4 Inbus screws to align it when it is not perfectly square. That is nice but I did not notice it one time that is was out of line. So you have to check ik some time. And you need a good reference to check it against.
I have a Incra 45 degrees incra www.gereedschappro.nl/artikel/641/incra-guaranteed-winkelhaak-45-graden-127-mm-5-inch.html
I like it from a accurate point of view, but I do not think I like it in 90 degrees if I should wear it on me in my Apron. It is to heavy and I do not like it looks.
I think the best are from woodpeckers because they can't shift because they are made of one piece. If I had to choose again, I would go for Woodpeckers. www.woodpeck.com/woodpeckers-stainless-steel-squares.html
But those are expansive. That said. There are a lot of brands and I use only 5 different brands. So it is hard to advice you because I think a lot are good. But I would advice one from aluminum or steel. (not wood)
I Hope this help a bit. Dennis
Banggod is selling a duplicate of the incra as well. Do a review of them.
Hi Buddy,
Yes, I ordered last week, so I hope to do a review in the next episode! Thanks for your comment!
Have you tried to start marking from the bottom up before having a broken wrist 😅
Good point:) like your comment!
@@HookedonWood I liked the review,it helped me make a decision.
Thanks!!

Any of this stuff come in SAE?
Sorry, i do not know what you mean!
@@HookedonWood Graduated in imperial rather than metric.
@@HookedonWood SAE is imperial measurement. Inches.
@@MrErViLi yes. Incra, Woodpecker, and the Chinese knockoffs all come in choice of inches or mm
@ 6:34, For the recommendation, 5+3+4+4=16?4= 4 so not 3.8.
There goes the German precision. But for me, not every subject weights the same. Watch episode 4. That gives a better scoring card about this ruler
woodpecker might be the best?
I do not have Woodpecker tools myself jet! But I do like the squares from them. So perhaps a review about that in the future :-)
put the 'T' at the edge away from you, top of board. No need to pivot the pencil point.
buy both.
Hi and thank you for your comment. In the video I told that it is a small point. And you are right that if I turn it around it is not in my way, but I prefer to hold the T to the wood with my tumb and draw a line with the pencil in the opposite direction. But good point en I think you will be as happy as I am with these T rulers.
@@HookedonWood no different a method then using a table saw miter fence in the opposite orientation. 'T' is out of the way if you push the wood to the 'T' fence and you and you have the opposite edge clear. Many times this method gives you better control.
@@MrBonners Thanks for your reply!
@@HookedonWood you are still holding the wood to the fence.
The link to the kerfmaker video is set to private.
Thanks for letting me know
You would not need todo that with your wrist if you turned the thing round
Yes, that is wright. But i prefer to hold the t-bar against the wood at one side and push the pencil line in the oppositie direction and not both in the same direction. But your wright. Good Point!
Do they make tools with English units?
Hi Philip,
I really do not know. Sorry!
What is English units?
Albert KCC that’s feet, inches and pounds instead of mm and kg.
@@philippeterson9512 Philip, they do have products with inches. But that depends on the products your interesting in. I see on their site that it is written if they are in Inches or CM or both.
do they have them with imperial markings??
Hi Moritz,
come on Dennis it has been a while we need more videos ???????????? Please
Hi William,
I had a summer break, but I am back now. I hope to upload a new video in the next two weeks. After that I schedule every two weeks a new video. thanks. And sorry to keep you waiting.
I watched for the combo square but left very disappointed. The precision of a square is absolutely critical!
Like a say sometimes. Not everything from China is a fairy tail.
That is why I started this China Tool serie. And I agree with you that precision is absolutely critical. That is why I can't understand that in a lot of reviews online, they mention this problem bet later on, they reward it for 5 stars.
But the good news is, if you watch my series, you will find some products that are definitely word buying.
Thanks for watching!
Suggested edit for your description: "fairy tale", not "fairy tail"
Thanks Shannon, Done!
I'd rather look for hand tools made outside china
Kerrfmaker was stolen for on bridge city tools. Even the name.
If you are using a tool chances are it is made in China :D
I bought a simple Chinese stainless steel ruler. The first mm is longer then the rest ;( what a joke
Maybe you shouldn't be such a cheap ass? China is an engineering superpower. And yes, they make much crap too.
You said you had to twist your wrist in an unusual way with the t-square, but then with the combination square you said you love it but had the same scenario and simply drew the line away from you czcams.com/video/Cgt31pZR9gE/video.html
Hi Haywood. I thought the same when I saw my video back one time. But I do not hold it always that way, and with the INCRA style ruler you can do it both ways, and with the thicker one, this is only one way possible (sort off) But for me, it is important that I show it. People can decide them selfs if they see it as a problem or a non issue. But, sharp watching :-)
"tip" not "pointer"
Thanks. I will keep it in mind☺️
Copy of woodpecker even the same color
I would love to buy from China but as I understand it, it's basically like slave labour is used for most of their exports. Maybe I am wrong about that. I will have to do some more research. I wish this world was not so evil.
