As a black woman, I went to the barbershop with my dad and brother every 2 weeks. My dad always taught my brother about his upkeep with his hair and presentation, and it was really a brotherhood in the shop. Men practicing self care and men with their sons bonding. It's a real life art form.

My father is a Black barber. He has won a few community awards. Thank you for acknowledging/highlighting the Black barbers place in our community and in our hearts.
The kids will look back on these videos with fond memories when they are older.
I think Uriah was slow in responding on if he wanted to go back to the barbershop because he was concerned about hurting your feelings. He’s so sweet.

The barber seemed like he went out of his way to make the experience special and memorable for Uriah, but as a kid, I think it was probably too time-consuming for him and exhausted his patience lol. It was great that he didn't complain though.
As a single mom(when my son was young.. I'm married now) but I would take my son to the barbershop and I enjoyed listening to what I called the "black man's harmony" because in one area there would be a debate.. In another sports talk.. U had music talk.. Politics... I used to just inhale being in the presence of kings...
Sadly the barber my son had from age 3-8 years old.. He was murdered.. At his shop.. Robbed. We had just come back from Disneyland and I got my son's hair cut every week so he was long overdue.. We get there and yellow tape is everywhere... We were told and I remember crying my eyes out.. He was one who always was doing something in the community for kids etc.. He was married and he was a father of two sons... It bothered me for a long time.
My son got another barber and he's been going to him (Troy) for 16 years now...

The beats, the history lesson, the visuals-this quality is above and beyond what you would ever typically see on CZcams. I’m mixed (West African dad, Portuguese mom) and my mom had no clue what to do with our hair. She never took us to the barber or salon, but I remember sitting in the living room watching my sister figure out how to buzz my brother’s hair, do braids and twists. Like others have said: it’s not just hair. It’s sacred somehow. Glen, thank you for sharing these moments. Keep doing what you’re doing!

My dad used to take my sister and I to the Barber Shop. I loved that the men immediately stayed authentic but respectful because we were girls and children. They always opened doors, gave us treats and dropped some gems on what kind of fools (their words not mine) to look out for. I remember it fondly many decades later
The same😆 I use to tease Brooks in Encanto San Diego how the most scandal of man talk would be going ,but they put it on hold and cleared the furthest room for girls to play playstation to STILL talk smack away from ears over the buzzes and zzz of the clippers and shears 👂🥰

I'm so glad you mentioned Derrick Barnes. He writes such good content for Black children. Both of my sons read "We Could Be Brothers." Plus, my youngest went to school where Derrick's mother was the school nurse. He got to meet Derrick at the local library when he was in middle school. That was so many years ago. Two things I appreciate in the first 2 minutes:
1. You used the term coily instead of other terms that have other than beautiful connotations.
2. You introduced him to how the culture gives out nicknames based on how we look.
The experience of hair to nubian people in the diaspora is so much more than just a style. It's never just hair.
💯💯💯 I'm trying to encourage my coworker now, to stop using a derogatory term re: her hair, as she just had a daughter who will likely have (BEAUTIFUL) thick hair just like her mom, and she is in danger of passing down a generational curse. 🙏🏾

As a young woman, I used to get relaxers. One time my mother took me to a woman who didn’t have a good skill set and my hair was so badly damaged that it fell out. My mom didn’t know what to do and I was devastated.
One day a coworker told her about a barber named Jeff who did women’s hair. So my mom took me to his barbershop and it was just that: a shop full of black men talking about black things.
Jeff did my hair for the next 5-6 years and I learned a lot inside the barbershop and culture from a black man’s perspective sitting in his chair.
Im natural now, so I wouldn’t need his services anymore, but I’ll always remember a black barber saved my hair and I’m forever grateful.
I Was Raised in the Black Barbershop! Learned a lot and that was my first time being included in “Grown Man” conversations. I didn’t have to go inside, my opinions was valued and it was dope! Got a lot of game in there too

My father in law was a barber and owned his own shop for many many years. He passed just before my son was born. I wanted him to be the first barber to cut his hair.
Yes the black barbershop is a huge part of our culture.
Its also the place where I see many young black boys get confident in giving a handshake. The first time I took my son and he walked around shaking hands/ fist bumping I was so emotional. I asked him about it and he said that what Dad says you supposed to do.You gotta go around the shake everybody hand.lol
Good dad. Teaching his son good manners. I had a child with very very curly hair and we r white people. I didn’t know how to take care of it. She screamed when I did anything with it. Comb shampoo ecf. So one of my friends at my work place told me take her to a ladies salon with a black hair dresser and that was the best advise I could have ever got from someone who cared for my child.
So here was this little two year old with a mop of curls and sitting in a big chair and her mama ( me ) learning all the tricks of the trade so to speak, I walked out with lots of products to take care of my baby girl. The atmosphere in that shop was fantastic. All the ladies were so nice to my girl.
My daughter is now in her 30s and she looked for a black lady that knows how to cut and style curly many white hairdressers have no clue …..
When we went to a place where there were all white people I got so frustrated and mad at the questions asked of me, like is her dad black ? Wtf wtf. I would say my god that’s personal and I am not answering that . The only one that needs to know who her dad is is my daughter.

Funny I had two daughters one has very straight hair like me and then I had this little one and she was a challenge. Haaaaaaaaa. Thank god now she can take care of her own hair and she is gorgeous and beautiful with her curls as is my other daughter with her straight hair like me haaaa
Thank you for this. I grew up in a salon/barbershop. I come from a family of cosmetologist, from my Great Grandmother to my Grandfather, two of my Uncles, and my mother. There were three salons/barbershops in my family. When I was a child a grew up in a shop where my Great Grandmother ran the salon on one side and my Grandfather ran the barbershop on the other side of two buildings with the ground level store-front combined to make Tommy's House of Beauty, with over 100 years of serving our community in North Philly. The relationships I saw cultivated there were beyond what people had with their doctors. Your barber and/hair dresser was there for EVERY milestone of your life and passed down from generation to generation. I've seen young boys come in for their very first hair cut when their mothers and fathers came in with cameras to take pictures and plastic bags to save the hair. That young boy would come back weekly or bi-weekly or at least every Easter, Christmas, Birthday, first day of school, school dances and prom; to get ready for any big event throughout his young life. And as a man he would come in for all of those times including every date, job interview, New Years Eve party, wedding or funeral. You talk to your barber and those sitting in the shop about everything you were going through, the good to brag and the bag to ask advice. Growing up the entire neighborhood new me from watching me grow up, sweeping up their hair in the shop every two weeks when they got up out of the chair of their stylist/barber who's mirror was lined with pictures of the community's Christmas, Easter and prom pictures. Thank you for this video and shout out to Willia Mae Thomas (my Great Grandmother) and Charles Thomas (my Grandfather) the owners of "Tommy's House of Beauty", we love and miss you.

That barber was definitely pulling out all of the stops for sure. He did a meticulous job. He even sponged the longer portions to bring out Uriah’s curl pattern. Finding a barber to cut our son’s hair was always a challenge. They might do well the first time and then not so so the next time. But he seems to have found a good barber this time, so I’m happy about that. My husband used to cut my son’s hair. The. At a certain point he didn’t want him to cut his hair any longer. I guess that he realized the limitations of my husband’s hair curing ability. Then he took him to the barber hop that a man from our church owned. Much like Uriah, he picked out a design to be done on his head. He definitely walked out with more swag too. Now he loves more hair on top of his head, a bit of sponging every now and again, and to have his goatee and sideburns shaped up.
I feel like the phrases, “my man” and “young blood” were uttered at least one time each during that visit.
My brother and I were raised by a single momma-I have memories of the 3 of us sitting in there and just being amazed at the presence of men-the antics, the opinions, the unwritten rules of respect.

I went with my brother as a little girl lol, and I was uncomfortable at first since I kinda knew it was a place for “only” boys/men. But then a man gave me a quarter to play a game. Instead of playing, I pocketed the .25 and sat back down triumphantly. The whole shop cracked up that I thought to keep the money instead of use it for the game. I didn’t understand why they laughed at first because I was like 6 or 7 tho lol

As a single mother, it was so important to me that my sons had the experience of going to a barber on a regular basis. I wanted them to feel the culture and male experience and importance of grooming. The conversations, the ambiance, the professionalism, even the boosters were an experience for them to see. My sons are men now, and I’m so grateful for my sons being able to experience that important part of our history and culture.
I remember taking my son to his barber. At first I would sit there with him. Then, I told his barber, Gerry, that I would let him come in alone while the men in the shop talk with him. I would sit out in the car and wait for him. It didn't matter if it was cold or hot outside, I was determined to allow my son to have that male bonding experience without his mom. He enjoyed it so much. He always had the money to pay for it himself. Then, as time went on, he was able to drive himself. Then, he decided to let his hair grow into locs. The only other person he let cut his hair was my brother. When a person finds that one barber, usually it is a lifelong relationship. Gerry has since moved away, and like I said, my son now has locs, but, the memories will always be there. Awesome video; this brought back so many wonderful memories.
My great-grandfather ( on my dad’s side ) was a barber in Charleston SC. It helped pay for his children’s schooling. One barbershop where he worked was a part of history during the race riots of 1919 called the Red Summer. The owner was W.G Fridie who I later found out through ancestry the was was a distant relative. The barbershops he worked at only cut White men’s hair. My dad’s father cut his and his brothers hair too. My dad did hair and his oldest brother was a barber too. I have great memories of going to the barbershop. Good conversation on all topics and things happening in our community and the world.
Watching this brought me so much joy. Makes me think back to when my older sister took me to the hair salon for the first time. Black barbershops and hair salons are more than places of service, it's an experience. This video got me excited to hit the salon tomorrow! Great content 🙏🏾

Thanks so much for that history lesson❤️about barbers. The black barber is definitely essential to our community. My son’s barbers are like family. The uncle owns the shop & his son and nephew work for him. The barbershop was his “thing” with his father. It’s heartwarming that he’s continuing that same tradition with his sons in another state. He visited recently and took his son to his childhood barbershop ❤️ for a haircut.
I live in Luxembourg and one time I entered a black barbershop with my friend when she was buying hair for her braids. I remember so well how the barber was talking about immigrating to Europe, the struggles and the wrong expectations and all men were listening and interjecting so respectfully. I don't know if it 100% equates the American black barbershop experiencr, but it might not be too distance since the way you presented it in this video reminded me a lot of it.

a black mans relationship with his barber is top 3 most important in his life. some men never change, go Wayyy out the way. Some barbers survive marriages, gf, long term relationships its quite a bond and one i choose not to get between as a black woman lol. I also never set foot in that space unless there is a major emergency . Its like sacred ground.

My uncle was my barber most of my life, and that was a huge part of our relationship. I now cut my nephews' hair, and that a huge part of our relationship. #HistoryRepeats

As a beautician I completely agree. The experience in a black salon is like no other. My mom also did hair and my dad cut hair. I remember the conversations and the artwork on the walls, the smell of spritz and oil sheen, the people who would come in selling their goods. Truly an experience I’ll never ever forget from such a young age

I am a black woman who goes to barbershop for hair cut and have been for over 35 years, Ilove the various conversations ,that go on between the customers and the barbers, I love the various suggestions and advice you hear during these conversations, and unlike a beauty shop , I have never had anyone get catty or jealous or upset when I state my opinion.

I took my son to the barber every two weeks. I had my hair done every two weeks as a professional R.N. Yes, barbers and hairstylist are part of African-American culture. I would accompany my younger brothers to the shop aka barbershop this brought back so many childhood memories. The barbershop is a staple in black communities. Seeing Uriah get up from the chair knowing that he was "fresh" put a smile on my face! Teaching self-care at a young age is essential to children. Great job dad!!!!

My uncle was a barber, I used to love going down to his shop. It was a chance to spend time with my uncle, but it was also a chance to spend time with a community that you see all around yourself but you only truly experience inside the shop
My uncle owned a barbershop but he transitioned 🙏🏽🕊before my son was old enough to get a haircut. My uncle was normally quiet and mild mannered but his alter ego came out when he was in his shop😂. He was like a totally different man.

I shed tears because this was such an important milestone to hit. As a single mom, I searched and searched until I found the barber that I trusted and that my son trusted. It ws a long journey full of bad cuts, forehead scars and a few cuss words. But when I see that smile as he gets out of the seat, when he tips his barber, and now he even can say "Mom, I need to see Truman" my heart swells. #blackboyjoy Thanks for this video xx
Awesome cut you can see the confidence in his face he really likes it. As a black woman who has chosen to go to the barbershop for at least five years now I just love it nothing like walking out with a fresh cut. It takes awhile to find the right barber but once you do you try to keep them for life lol
I remember talking my son for his first haircut as a Dad and it’s still a memory I cherish 12 years later and even now I am the only one that takes him to the barbershop
I'm 57 and can still remember going to the black barber shop with my Father and that experience I got to enjoy with him was a big part of my childhood. My barbers name was Joyner and his shop was called Headhunters in Los Angeles.

My father had several jobs and businesses and he decided to get his license and co own Black barbershops. As a black female, I learned a lot being in the barbershop with my Dad. I remember sweeping the floor and earning dollars and walking with my brother and getting lunch for the other barbers food. I loved to hear them talk and their stories.
I am also really really glad my parents raised us in Black communities - middle class and upper middle class neighborhoods. I really hope that as your children navigate in life that you give them the chance to be in environments where they are around other black children and in black communities.
Barbershop and Beauty shops have always been an integral part of our Black American community.

But I love your creativity, I understand the main point is to teach fatherhood but I love you the vibe you create in your videos. The pull and serve of your videos are crazy. As a black woman my barbershop experience was with my mom when we did our “big chop”. Not having my dad much in my life didn’t really give me that type of experience. However, with my mom it showed me that as a woman you can look beautiful regardless of the texture, length and styles we do with our hair. We display the artists (our barbers, hairdressers etc.) with pride because we knew that they saw the beauty in us and molded us for the world to see our natural beauty.
As a single mother of a 10yr old boy this was informative to watch. I would go in with my son to get his hair cut eventually he became very familiar with the barber and one day asked me could he go in alone! I was shocked🧐 he was 9 at the time. As a black woman that raised two young boys and a daughter. I cut my Son's hair,I started taking them to the Barbershop when they no longer wanted me to cut their hair,I did not give them a lining,but they had a handsome clean up. I absolutely love your family vlogs. Be blessed.

I REALLY wish that my old beauty school would have actually taught us to care for and cut hair for... well... literally anyone besides white ladies. Literally half the student body petitioned for a proper class on it and we were told flat out no....

Single mom taking my son to barber,I was always looking for safe spaces where the men could be men but still respected that women and children were present. I found several of these places along the way until my son could go on his own. He learned to play dominoes, chess, learned about having your shoes shined, they even gave him a barbershop name. His barber cut his hair and held some deep conversations along the way. Boys need to hear men voices. His barber teased, challenged and encouraged him.
