This is arguably the most important lesson when it comes to drawing. I see so many students try to draw complex things when they can't even draw basic shapes.

I love having these guest artists do workshops like this, it's really important i think to get influence from multiple sources, as everyone has their own way of explaining things and not everyone will "click" with the same explanations, even if the subject matter is the same, sometimes a different way of explaining will resonate more

I wonder when we stopped thinking this way? So many of us grew up playing with tangrams, but at some point we stop thinking about large objects as a collection of geometric shapes. My 5 year old does this in prek. My 11 yr old is relearning this skill through simple art books and she’s in the 5th grade. And that’s only due to her own interests and my influence since I’m studying concept art. So I guess we neglect that skill at some point between those ages. But it definitely revolutionizes our art when we begin seeing the world in this way again.

Great video! Will do some of these exercises. It has been a long time since I have done some form studies!

Amazing info always struggled with that. Used addetive more than subtractive which led to a mess and lose my footing around the drawing. Thank you so much 🙏

Ah yes, form study, my not only weakness.

There are some pretty interesting studies (of the scientific kind, I got this from a psyc text book, not an art textbook) about how our brain recognizes things visually. Basically, it does this. There are 25 or so simple shapes that it breaks objects into and uses the pattern they create to work out what it is three dimensionally. It also allows the brain to include missing information (say vision is partially blocked), as long as it can work out those base shapes it can work out the more complex ones.
Also on remembering shapes. There are about 7 different types of memory. One aspect of working memory is that things get turned into chunks. Basically small bits of information. The better you know something the more complex these chunks can be. ie a phone number can be remembered easier if it is made of a pattern. In this instance, by converting an object into the easily remembered basic shapes you more efficiently use your working memory and special skills (the spacial location of an object is a different memory than what the object is). Long term memories form easier if you have information it can link into as long term memory is very relative to itself (which is why if you have something on the tip of your tongue, trying to remember it a different way can work as it activates different relationship links). Or to put it another way, remembering in relationship to simple shapes (which you know well) is more likely to be remembered. Also long term memory is, at least somewhat, recreated through knowledge rather than being a snapshot but I'm already way off topic.

At drawing school, we learned to use geometry and shadowing as the absolute basics. 😊
