    3 Essential Elements from Video.
    1.) Narrative- How should the work feel - funny? mysterious? Strike a cord. Think about this before you start, (key words : calmness, for example)
    2.) Have a Story- Makes work more interesting, helps them to remember the piece more. A focal point, creates clarity as well. Mood initial sets up expectations, narrative elements build on this. Soft framing- showing a story without explaining everything. Hard framing- when you show/explain all things.
    3.) Lighting- Ties mood and story with intent. Blue can be calm, red can be anger. Atmosphere. Direction of light can make a different feeling. Helps with emotion, guides the viewers eye. Separates average from great art. Creates a sense of balance.
    MicroTip-
    -Save special EFX till the end. Ex - Glows, rain, snow , lensflares
    -Paint local colors - which tends to be in "Overcast" first gives flexibility to change the lighting easier to anything else. Example can make a new overlay layer, paint some orange for a sky, and mask out the areas you dont want lit. This also makes painting easier because you focus on one problem at a time, instead of all lighting at once.
    Great video

    same thing happened to me for the past year: waves of interviews about illustration jobs that went nowhere. I decided to find a day job in another field, just to pay the bills while maintaing my art skills just in case the sun rises again

    • @nathansanchez3012
      @nathansanchez3012 Před 3 měsíci +8

      yup. I recently started full time at my current day job while continuing to work on my art and portfolio on the side. I'm trying to see it as an opportunity to grow. Getting better at time management, work efficiency, and using 3D and other techniques to speed up the process so that I can make more with less time. Blender has really helped with that. I think the sun will rise again. But in the mean time, the best thing to do is to grind so that when it does come up, we are ready.

    hi tyler, sorry to hear about those interviews. I want you to know no matter who hires or doesn't hire you, you are a massive inspiration to me. Whenever i feel in doubt or worried about the future, your videos help me a ton. Not to mention, you sharing the less fun side makes you insanely relatable. Even though you don't know me directly i look up to you and i really see you as a mentor

      its insanely competitive right now, these both were for very high positions like 6 figure contract type of big. i did the best i could. The funny thing is i didn't even apply, they sought me out and asked me to interview. and still didn't make it. ;/

      @@TylerEdlin84 that's a bummer Tyler !... Can you give us, aspiring concept artists, some insight on the junior level type of jobs, from your own's and your peer network's experience in the industry? Are people being hired like before? Is AI replacing them already? Is it realistic to expect to be hired in a small to medium-sized studio without prior experience and shipped titles? I try to have a positive outlook on the matter and continue my portfolio building as usual, but I am really struggling with the uncertainty of the field and want to hear some pro opinions about the future prospects of the concept art industry, and if it is plausible for people to start from scratch, or whoever got in until now got in and that's it, it is incredibly unlikely to get a job from now on etc. I would really love to watch a video about this topic with you and maybe other youtube artists, (like Adam Duff for example). Sorry for spilling my guts here, i just for carried away :P

    Just want to share with you something my mom always said to me whenever I felt lost. "No storm last for a hundred years" I kept that phrase close to my heart and repeat it whenever I struggle.
    This are uncertain and turbulent times to be an artist, I can relate to many of your feelings, but for sure it will settle down in the meantime we can keep creating, keep learning and enjoying being an artist.
    Btw I like that you narrate this video in a softer way than usual.

  • @JacobHalton
    @JacobHalton Před 3 měsíci +1

    Damn! I had to keep checking the video to make sure this wasn't a timelapse, that's incredible you were able to do all this in less than 20 minutes. I also relate to what you're saying about the job market. I went from several cancelled projects in a row in 2019 to the same kind of strings of interviews and not getting hired in 2020. Then it was okay for a while but now I'm back looking for work and it's rough out there.
    I keep trying to remember how bad it was just a couple years ago and then improved, so hopefully industries should come out of this slump they're in now, when companies realize they shouldn't have laid off so many people and budgets start opening up again.
    Hope you find something soon, and thanks as always for all your helpful advice and tips!

    I'm right there with you Tyler it's a tough time atm for sure, hang in there and remember to keep your spark alive 🙏💯 I say that because I lost mine for a few months after just recently barely missing out on my first job as a concept artist two rare opportunities in a row I was pretty crushed in my case as an aspiring artist 😅 But its reminded me how important it is to remember why we love what we do, especially in times like this. Take care 💯❤️

    I don't know if it's a coincidence or not, but somehow, you always make the right video at the right time.
    I love art and I always will. Initially it started as a hobby, but after consistently creating and improving for the last six years, it's clear that art is not just a hobby for me, but an inherent part of my identity.
    However, lately, I've begun questioning whether it's worth it to pursue it as a career, due to the negative developments you mentioned. Still, I'm also reminded that being an artist is more than just finding a job in it. Art is something I will always do, no matter what situation I'm find myself in.
    As for a career, things don't look very well right now, as you mentioned. Still, dark ages do not last forever. Every storm and wildfire, no matter how long and destructive, will eventually pass. And when it settles, life eventually finds a way to recover and blossom. As another commenter here said, the sun will rise again and we'll find a way, as many before us have. Therefore, even while the storm keeps brewing, I will continue to create and be the best artist I can be. And when the sun rises again, I will be ready to take the next leap.
    Thank you Tyler for another awesome video, as usual. :)

    I really appreciated your insights! As the AI tech develops, I'm feeling an "excavation" into years of digital art practice being scooped away from me.. I'm impressed by the AI tech, but it hurts all the same.. When the tech and prompts can do exactly what we do as artists, we might find ourselves shutting our phones off, and going back to traditional mediums and trying to display our artwork in actual art galleries..

    Thanks for valuable tips, Tyler. A question regarding the illustration work. How does one approach the imagery woven into the narrative? Like when the illustrations are in the body of the text and should accompany the storytelling. Should the artist omit the details already mentioned in the text, can he deviate from the story and what's the best way to draw illustrations, which go with the text without over-encumbering the reader's attention?

  • @veryfilthything

    Painting only with the 'local colour' and ignoring the lighting scenario seems like it would lead to drastically different results then having it in mind from the start. Wouldn't that mean if you paint a scene at night, you do the entire painting as if it was done at day and then apply filters over the top to change it to night? Does that actually work well? I've tried doing a similar thing a few times but the results have never been as good as figuring out shading colours from the start.

    i'm gonna keep it a 100, AI is not taking over anything, it's just a new program for non-artists to create art. i've used AI for over a month and that shit is not easy to use, produces bad artworks, doesn't do what you tell it to do etc and even if it was perfect you still would need to find a way to perfectly convey an image or thought in your head to an AI so that it understands exactly what you want but even then you'll get something you most likely didn't even describe 😂
    ai is great but trying to use it for work or masterfully controlling is an unreasonable goal
