My career choice has been a joke in more than one of my extended circles my whole life. I refuse to let them get the better of me.

I still have that gut feeling that being a Game Developer is the definition of being God...
Because it means reconciling the technical side (Programming, coding, etc.) and the imaginary side (Creative skills).

I'm currently in my 30's and in the process of a career reinvention. It's a scary process and I am facing my own failures, regrets and fears each day. It takes a lot to keep the self-belief flowing. Simple things like physical and mental health, a proper routine, maintaining perspective, and avoiding analysis paralysis are crucial to supporting your goals and keeping that sense of progress, even when it's at the pace of an iceberg. Whenever I'm feeling a bit defeated, as I am today, a Tyler pep talk always reminds me not to get so down on myself. Thanks Tyler.

My brother spent a lot of "wasted" time in university. being told by our parents what he needed to study, it was Business Studies, which he hated, then he wanted to change courses. I believed he nearly went to Architecture, because he wanted to do art but our parents despised the idea of an art course because of the whole "starving artist" POV.
He graduated, then took 1 year to find a job and couldn't. Then, I remember one day when he suddenly told us he wanted to be a tattoo artist. I thought it was something from a heat of a moment, but he had a lot more motivation than he had for when he was studying in uni. He practiced tattooing on fake skins when our parents would complain about the noise at night, practiced on his friends (which is illegal by the way), and then suddenly, he said he was a tattoo apprentice.
He gradually got a stream of customers, have his own Instagram, and then he was telling me about these big jobs he was getting.
I was talking to my dad yesterday about how it was so frightening to have a dream and think about failing in the future. And I told him that my brother is actually quite impressive, because not many people are able to determine a goal suddenly after all the let-downs and wasted time, and then actually being able to succeed by being consistently working hard and smart.

Honestly the point about creating systems for organising your work life is so underrated for artists. I can't believe how much more work I started getting done with a proper task management/note-taking system

The thing you mentioned at the end about communicating the process to clients, I learned that the first time someone asked me for a commission 😅 I sent him a sketch just to see if he liked the general concept, and never heard from him again. I learned to never expect non-artists to know anything about the artistic process 😭

Thanks Tyler. I’ve just had a character building week! Fighting not to let it ruin because I know the regrets I live and breathe everyday will never go away until my unprogressive habits change.

Thank you so much for making these videos! Making illustration or concept art my career has been a dream since I was 10 years old and first got a drawing tablet. Sometimes I get doubts whether I can make it, whether I am good enough to compete in the industry, but I am determined to keep improving and holding onto hope. Seeing how much progress I made in only 2 years, I am hoping that I'll get there!

Thank u so much for this video, at the end of it made me burst in tears, feeling totally understood and seeing someone that has gone through a lot similiar phases and survived from it all is kind of healing a part in me. Even tho i'm still struggling terribly, all the things messed up inside and out and tryna get myself together in broke Turkish economy, also being hopeless after ai takeover.Pushing myself in every wrong direction, but ill try to stop and prioritize wellbeing

The biggest issue I've personally run into is 1. Not believing in my work (skill). I have people saying my work is great and "omg you should sell your work". I just have a hard time believing them with confidence. 2. Being like you and most of us introverted, but on top of that, really bad scoical anxiety. I don't know the best way to put my band out there lol, just seems impossible at times. Really appreciate your videos. They're all very insightful.

Can you talk about brushwork someday? I always see artists say "Brushes don't matter" but I fail to believe them. If they don't matter, then why use them? What are brushes are good for what? How can I train or learn how to use brushes to paint with textures? The issue I personally have is that using "fancy" brushes causes me to lose control over the edges of my paintings. I have yet to find good resources on this.

My greatest hurdle isn’t what people think about my career.
My greatest hurdle is myself and the comparisons I make to my art inspos and mentors, many who are from Korea, China and Japan. Want to reach their skill level. Will reach their skill level.
But, I’ve only been serious about art now for just under a year, when these others have done it for 10+ years.
Almost as though I’m doing pretty good for someone in their first year…

I've recently come to the, fairly obvious to some, realisation that if there is an area in our life that is lacking we need to put the work in to it. Be it art skill, customer base (marking), friendships, relationships, fitness et etc etc.
Mixed with my recent refusal to use a computer/ phone unless for a specific purpose (had this on for entertainment while I ate) I have a lot of time and without constant entertainment/ distractions I've been putting that time into productive things. Including my art.

Tyler, do you know any artists with ADHD who have good advice/have managed to set up systems that work for discipline with it? I wish so badly that I could just buckle down and grind and discipline myself into rigorous time-management systems but my brain just doesn't work like that. It feels like the harder I try, the more I end up depressed, just scraping by on my client deadlines, and never making personal art.

In my experience, one thing that is probably hurting a lot of artists on the financial end is an entitlement complex. "F- capitalism, f- corporations, f-bosses and managers, f- the rich. I shouldn't have to pay for things. I shouldn't have to work to survive. I want things for free, but I myself don't work for free and in fact I deserve a raise with benefits just for existing and showing up."
Not understanding how value is created, not understanding how money works, not understanding supply and demand, not understanding how to run a business or to lead employees. Not understanding that a job is just a problem to be solved and no one owes you anything in life and no one ever said life was fair. Apart from art-related stuff, many artists have only ever worked crappy wagee jobs and never known anything outside of that, so they don't understand how the other half lives or what their struggles are like.
A lot of people don't wanna hear that, but it's definitely holding them back financially.

This is 100% true. I see it everyday and I’m very guilty of keeping silent as I literally do and support many of these opposite reactions

    • @MarushiaDark316
      @MarushiaDark316 Před 4 měsíci +1

@@TylerEdlin84 One thing that might make it easier, and which you would be really good at, is asking meaningful questions to get them to reflect on their assumptions. For instance, "Where did you get the idea that ... ?" or "Help me understand what you mean by ... ?" or "It sounds like you feel ... is that right?"
In this way, it doesn't come off as aggressive or invalidating, but lets them know they've thrown an error. The idea is get them to talk themselves out of bad ideas and make them feel like they reached the conclusion on their own as opposed to being judged for it.
Another one I often do is personalize things and put things in their terms. "You wouldn't like if someone did this to you, so why would you do that to someone else?" And make them think about it.
