This is a very important thing to teach that you don't hear often. I believe the trend of "how to draw/paint this or that FAST" is hurting specially newcomers, cripling them from the very start with frustration and anxiety born of wildly unrealistic expectations.

More than anything, I think communicating back and forth with clients is the big one, which is something I'm working on! I've been lucky to have very patient clients so far haha

i spent years trying to "draw fast" and ended up not even using those skills, like the people ive worked for gave me so much more time than i was given in school or gave myself on personal projects

In my experience work crunch in game dev mostly happens due to bad management. Not pointing out anyone but I’ve experienced both end of the spectrums.
A project that is well planned out and designed, normally faces very little crunch
While a project that gets an inexperienced management that tries to formulate or does not think of action to consequences well in advance always ends up with backlog that needs rework. Thus there is prototyping and blocking out in game dev for art and programming all together
Thank you for this! I started watching this feeling a little bit of an imposter syndrome, due to taking 2 weeks to deliver key shots. Then I reached the part in which you mention delegating parts of the tasks to others while I'm here making the entire processes by myself (initial roughs, Blender, characters, final render, communication and presentation etc etc ) and still wondering how to maintain quality and get faster 🤡
One thing is for sure: becoming a concept artist on a studio helped so much with speed, as you have to do multiple works daily. My speed skyrocketed in relation to my freelancing time - and quality too, of course! However this is perfectly doable if you're freelancing or "only" building a folio. My plan is to keep this... "studio workflow" and mindset for my personal studies and projects whenever my studio contracts end.
Also: This doesn't mean sacrificing rest and family time by all means. Roughly paraphrasing what you mention in the video, resting isn't negotiable, it makes work sustainable. I say "studio workflow" more a "fail faster" approach, and to try to always have a small goal or ongoing project with small-ish deadlines.

The turn around still seems quite fast, and with this quality of work I'm not sure if I'm ready. Though I imagine this comes with years of experience too. I hope my quality and speed can at least pass for a junior level position.
4:39 It would be tough for me to that level of full color thumbnail quality in 1 hour. Would probably take me 2-3 hours each. The final would also take me about 8 hours. Also, double the expected time. One of my big goals is efficiency.
That fruedian slip " the prompt" makes me want to ask if this concern with speed is being amplified by the existence of AI Art machines that can churn out images super fast now?
Not really even before AI students have always been concerned about being quick enough in social media really makes us fixate on that.

8:50 What do I do if the client at my corporate job does not give me enough info and when I respectfully and politely reach out to them and ask questions like these they say I’m “fact checking” and questioning them? I’m not a confrontational person and this causes me a lot of stress.
Honestly I don’t know o never have been in that spot. But I would probably say I can’t be fact checking if I don’t even have the facts and all I’m trying to do is get information from you so I can do my job.

Of course !
You get automatically fast if you live the workflow and know the little tricks. I do designs and art pieces as a 2nd profession and I'm fast. I also do wildlife photography and I get good results with clients. It's not a you issue or skill issue if you love what you are doing, it will come with time that's normal. BUT it is a YOU problem if you do it for profit and only for being ''cool'' or whatever reason... be honest about what you truly love like and hate.
