    james have you ever done an art progression thing ? showing some of your older art all the way to newer stuff. i'd love to see something like that if so. i love seeing where artists have come from and seeing where they are now and their progression along the way.

    Really great tut👍🏼⭐️ It’s going pretty fast, tho - I know I can simply pause for every complex and informative sentence, but a friendly tip from me is to slow things down a bit after each point or tip.

    Provided the value of the "floor" or the plane the object is on stays the same, does the value of the cast shadow stay the same as well regardless of changes in that of the object's? Also, how do you determine the value of the cast shadow?

    How do you judge the value for things with more plains, for example low poly looking and more organic forms, ive never gotten the hang of detailed forms, especially edges where shapes converge inward

    • @plakjeham118
      @plakjeham118 Před 3 lety

      Use your value scale of just 10 values only. Detirmine if your object is in light or in shadow. Light and shadow must be separated clearly from each other. When you have saperated these two shapes you can give each shape a "range of values". How bright do you want your light shape to be? How dark must your shadow shapes be. Look at your scene and squint your eyes. Your darkest light may be around a 5 on the value scale, whereas your lightest light can be a 2. Only use the exact values that you have on the value scale. Keep it simple with just these 10. I see people using 100s of different values and that must indeed be very confusing. So now that you gave each your shadows and light shapes a "limmited range" from these 10 values of the value scale you can group planes within these ranges to those values. Wich planes are the darkest light, wich are the brightest light and as last wich planes come in between those. We call them "inbetweener values" but don't use any other value then 1 to 10. Nothing inbetween like 3,5 or 4,7. Think with every value you add on your canvas. Assign it to a plane.

    Hey james, very cool stuff! It is a bit offtopic to this video, but could you offer some wisdom about how to achieve good line quality like yours? I like how your lines are essentially wobbly-ish and freehandy, but the end result is very tight looking. Did you practice straight lines in every angle as it seems from this video, or are you used to rotate the canvas? Also do you consciously force yourself not going over lines once they are put down, even when they are not perfect? Anything else that comes to your mind about this topic? Thanks in advance if you find time to answer this :)

      yeah I also love the tutorial and explanation though.
      but organic things like human head seems pretty hard to paint even with this rules unless all you just wanted is some sort of human head on abstract.
      I mean you need to paint and make it like a realistic human face.

    Dude is teaching vector projection like it's nothing. This is pretty much how it is taught in math.
    Vector math can quantify these values, it has applications in all sorts of other problem solving scenarios, like graphics. The closest relatable thing I can think of is writing complex vertex lighting shaders, though basic shadow casting like this can be done by a default renderer already. This is what is known as Lambertian shading if you want to google it.
