Y'all please forgive how absolutely tired I sound in this video! Rick and Morty season 5 has come to a close with probably the biggest season finale we’ve ever seen from the series. Honestly, this might be the biggest EPISODE in the entire series, in just about every measurable way. The scale was massive, the storylines it followed up were the most desired, the back story reveals were incredibly thorough, and the cliffhanger left us with some of the biggest and most fascinating implications of any Rick and Morty story so far. So let’s dive in and not only talk about this finale, but season 5 as a whole and our expectations for season 6. Aka, Rick and Morty Season 5's Ending Explained

I think that with evil Morty they did the idea of the “sympathetic villain” better than most other things these days. A lot of times they’ll get so caught up in the “sympathetic” part that they undermine the “villain” part.
Evil Morty’s motives are sympathetic. Rick is an asshole and wanting to escape his influence is something that you can sympathize with him on. However, he is still a clear-cut villain. Despite these sympathetic motives, Evil Morty himself is not sympathetic. He doesn’t care about the other Morties; he uses them as slave labor (see: the deformed sewer Morties) and is perfectly content with killing them along with the Ricks when destroying the Citadel. This is exemplified perfectly in the moments immediately preceding the destruction of the citadel. Evil Morty offers “our” Morty a supposed chance to escape with him, but when that offer is rejected, Evil Morty callously reveals that he had no actual intention of taking anyone else with him anyway. That’s him in a nutshell.
He says that what makes him “evil” is being sick of Rick. It isn’t. What makes him evil is that he’s a hypocritical sociopath who’s willing to murder thousands of his own kind in order to benefit himself and only himself.

    • @alecshockowitz8385
      @alecshockowitz8385 Před 2 lety +29

To us, real living people your last line is very true for why he would be evil.
But he is saying why he is the EVIL Morty to RICK not to anyone else.
Rick has zero care for the idea of slaughtering millions of intelligent beings and a complete lack of remorse if he thinks he's even remotely in the right or it gives him something he wants.
That is quite LITERALLY what he is saying and you completely missed the point.
In a society built entirely by Ricks and Morty's our morals no longer matter in the slightest. They live in an entirely separate society.
At the most basic level he is evil for two entirely separate reasons, that can never be simultaneously true. He cannot both be evil for killing tons of people AND evil for wanting to get away from Rick.

You are right. But in all of this evil Morty has proven that he has essentially become exactly like Rick. Through his actions it has become painfully obvious that he is the only other being aside main Rick himself, who's actually happened and adopted Rick's philosophy that none of this matters. That nothing you've done and will ever do makes a difference. That's why killing Ricks, Mortys, and anyone is nothing to him. None of this mattered shit for as long as he is there. In the Rickverse. And he alone found a way to escape it. To run away from the things that don't matter. The guy isn't evil. He suffered, rebelled, fought, and won.

How I interpret it is that he just wants his life to have meaning fundamentally. Right now he is trapped in a prison that he had no control or say in bred for the purpose of being a convenience to Rick kind. He doesn’t like the fact that he exists in a small infinite of multiverses where every decision ultimately can be dictated by Rick and that his most reduced value in life is being a commodity to Rick. He rejects the premise of that existence and wants something more. He’s not necessarily evil just more independent thinking and acting and is sick of being lorded over by someone he hates

Honestly, I think this may be one of the bigger things Rick could have been running from when he made his own little multiverse to live in. Not just other beings smarter and more powerful than Rick that could threaten him, but just the idea that there are Ricks out there that are happy, humble and peaceful. So much of Rick's suffering is self-inflicted, and he uses his intelligence as a way to shield himself from responsibility for that. He's built an entire existence in order to validate the fact that he's miserable.
Because Rick is smart, things must be this way. It's his burden to bear for being the best at everything ever. But the existence of anyone, especially a Rick, who's just as smart and capable but is living a better life is probably far more threatening to our Rick than any slimy alien monster that's going to come from the other side of the wall.
Rick didn't just create his pocket multiverse to ensure his safety and supremacy, but to maintain the beliefs he wants to hold about himself and existence at large. Anything that would challenge him or make him uncomfortable isn't allowed.

This likely facilitated the formation of the new portal fluid as the destruction of the curve would likely result in some changes on how universes are linked/could be traversed.
It also likely is part of the reason why RIck tossed his portal gun as he was the one who made the Citadel and the Curve itself, so he would know that even if he could repair the gun as it was, he would have to go back to the drawing board on it because of what Evil Morty did.

  • @TheHouseoftheShadow
    @TheHouseoftheShadow Před 2 lety +13

    Part 1: Pawns
"Our" Rick is the extreme variant of the other Ricks in the central finite curve (CFC), but is ultimately just a pawn, just like his Morty.
Looking back at our Rick, he hadn't discovered portal technology yet.
He was working on it and his portal juice was blue. That would have given him access to the multiverse as it appeared normally, just like Morty did with the yellow portal. His math was correct, but a previous Rick (or other being) created a system where those who tried to create portals to reach the omniverse wouldn't be able to travel there (think back to the scene where he throws an apple through and it gets roasted), unless outside of the CFC. The apple traveled through the portal, but was cooked, however, everytime in the series someone used bunk portal fluid they get liquified (see the citadel episode where the Rick gets his portal equation wrong). On top of this, "Evil" Morty (EM), when he swaps the portal fluid makes the portals usable, they simply open portals to an unintended and dangerous universe (all the portals have creatures or contraptions that reach out and kill the intended traveler). If the portal was just bunk fluid, the Ricks and Mortys (RaMs) would have touched it and liquified. That would have qued to the other RaMs to stop using the portals. Ricks aren't dumb, they're arrogant. Each one thought that his portal gun would lead him to safety because he assumed he was the only one with safe portal fluid. Our Rick was the only one to ask his Morty if he refilled the portal juice and knew something was amiss. He actually cares for his Morty, despite their dysfunctional relationship and due to how easily EM allowed them to leave, he knew something was off. Our Rick is dysfunctional, but highly perceptive when it comes to battle (hence why he's survived for so long).
Part 2: The Reason We're Here
There are multiple theories as to how the CFC was created, but none of those matter, what matters is the end result they produce. Who benefits most from this snake eating its own tail? There are 3 main options:
A: RaMs are both being farmed by an original Rick/Morty or higher order being.
B: Someone started the curve long ago, and everyone is unknowingly trapped on the Rick side of the veil.
C: The creators are the force that "created" and created the CFC purely for narrative purposes.
A: EM is going to have a bad time. He thinks that just because he was smart enough to notice the CFC and get out of the CFC that he'll be free of Rick. What's not to say that either a Rick or higher order being was looking for a way in. What's to say that the "Rick" who confronted our Rick was even a Rick at all? This series has established as canon that no one escapes the chain of dimensions. There's always a universe above or below. No one's alone, no one escapes, we're all trapped here together. EM thinks Rick confined himself to the CFC, what's not to say Rick wasn't cordoned off by another being as a cosmic punishment or teaching lesson?
B: The CFC may be Rick's sandbox, but eventually every kid needs to use the bathroom, or get a snack. The CFC isn't a sandbox; It's a coffin/prison. As resourceful as Rick is...you don't think there weren't useful things he could have used outside the CFC? Universes full of stuff he liked and enjoyed? Of course there were, he just had no clue that there was an outside...why do you think our Rick struggled with the blue portal for so long? He couldn't get out! The math was sound, just not for the dimensions he was in. I say dimensions for a reason, space-time can be cordoned off. When you sit in a chair, you confine yourself to that chair. When you enter a room, you are confined to that room. Rick and Morty have been confined to their reality set (their universes/the show). Don't you think our Rick would have left the CFC to find his revenge if he knew it was an option...? He didn't because he didn't know. While RaMs make 4th wall breaks as a joke, they aren't sentient or supersane like Deadpool. They're supersane like the Joker. They're aware of the outside world as a writing mechanic, not as a reality. They're just characters, not consciousnesses.
Part 3: Depression and its escape
The creators of Rick and Morty are depressed, like most intelligent people. They're looking for a distraction. People like Beth and Jerry are ultimately trapped in the universe by their lack of intelligence and awareness. So, they seek pleasure in the small ways they can within their own dimensions. While Rick, who can travel between universes and has relative cosmic awareness is trapped by his emotions. Morty is intelligent enough understand the multiverse, but can find happiness in normalcy (him trying to find and keep a love interest). Rick has seen and done it "all" before.
The shows two creators are Rick. We as the audience are Beth and Jerry, trying to understand and create theories to further entertain ourselves. What the creators are trying to do is make us like Morty. The want us to understand the allusions they make to other works and enjoy the ride of the episodes and stories, but ultimately they want us to shut up and enjoy the ride. EM got tired of the CFC, but while he's found momentary relief in escaping, he's still bound by his reality...just like us. No matter how much dissection we do, or theories we create. We are still trapped by our reality. So, just shut up, stop theorizing and enjoy the ride. If you try to figure it all out, you'll just end up like Rick. Be like Morty, break the cycle...and enjoy your life.

    • never finds Eviler Rick
    • somewhere in here he switches universes to one where Rick didn't get Beth killed, but does leave her
    • seems to broker peace with other Ricks by building them the Citadel
    • also builds the Central Finite Curve, a subset of multiverses wherein Rick is the smartest being in the galaxy, separates the CFC from all other multiverses where he's not
    • crash lands back on earth, reuniting with Beth and meeting Morty (and Jerry).
    • In one of the universes, "Evil" Morty learns the truth of the Central Finite Curve, that Ricks are altering events to produce Mortys and using them for their bullshit. "Evil" Morty wants out, he wants to escape the CFC to finally live in a universe where Rick isn't central to everything
    • In an early Rick and Morty adventure, they look for "Evil Rick" who captures them and scans Rick's brain before being killed. Evil Morty gets away with that data, giving him intel on the Citadel and CFC
    • Evil Morty gets elected president of the Citadel while Rick and Morty bang merpeople in Atlantis. Evil Morty still doesn't have all the info he needs to escape the Central Finite Curve, but now has access to the Citadel
    • Looking for a way to get Rick back from the two crows, Morty goes to the Citadel and becomes 40. They have to return there to undo it.
    • Once there, "President" (Evil) Morty finishes scanning Rick and Morty's brains and begins his escape to beyond the CFC
    • To prevent any Rick from stopping him, Evil Morty hacks all their portal guns to either kill them or teleport them to a chamber that kills them.
    • Rick and Morty escape in the Mortyburg portion of the citadel along with several malformed Mortys before the rest of the station is sucked into a black hole
    • Evil Morty escapes the Central Finite Curve and gains access to infinite realities where Rick either doesn't exist or is not that important/smart.
    • Evil Morty opens a yellow portal, a color often associated with Morty, representing his newly won agency, as well as technology beyond what we understand

    2. Rich didn’t want to deal with other people that where as smart as him (if not smarter) because Rick knows how to deal with himself, he is his own worst enemy after all, knowing what buttons to push and when to push them to gain the upper hand against them.
    3. He separated the Ricks that are selfish monsters from the Risks that choose the simpler life just like he did to make sure none of them became just like him.

    @migmigbigboy Před 2 lety +52

Made this comment in another video, but I thought I'd share it here too.
What's interesting to me are what the colors of the portals probably represent now:
Blue is limited travel around one universe, and green as we know of it being the interdimensional travel. Now knowing basically the realities the Ricks have confined the universes where they rule are basically the green portals, the yellow portals most likely represents true access to infinite realities, which Evil Morty now has access.
We can see that EM possibly broke the central finite curve seeing Rick's portal gun fizz out of its green portal fluid during the end of the episode, meaning the CFC could be gone. So the green portals were basically a combination of infinite possibilities LIMITED into specific timelines. Blue + Yellow = Green.
*BUT HEY, THAT'S JUST A THEO--*

I thought season 5 was really strong - but they played around with some new pacing for the episodes that I think made them feel rushed. They weren't "bad" but it wasn't the same feeling on each episode I was used to, but I am glad the writers are trying new things. To me, it's why each episode felt kind of "rushed" not from a quality stand point, but from a developing and playing on ideas and plots.
But it also made sense in the grand scheme of things - the family has seen some shit now so they would be more willing now to cope and then ignore everything.
Edit - as an example- I don't think any episode this season could have fit in the "goodbye moonman" song because they were just cruising through each episode so fast. Maybe it made them feel more one-dimensional because of that. But I have crazy ADHD so it was fine with me lol

However, when Rick alters it to go to C-137, or a place on the Central Finite Curve, the portal turns green. Like you mention, the portal 'Evil' Morty uses a Yellow Portal instead of a Green one.
