I can’t express how much I appreciate you for not demonizing the obt I have three of them and all three retreat into their burrows and never give me threat poses occasionally rehousing I get something but that a no brainer since your basically destroying it’s home to move it into a new one. I really enjoyed this video .

Unfortunately here in South Africa they are illegal to own however i did get a close second and that's the Asian Fawn (also my first old world). It turned orange from its previous molt and my only issue I've had with it is rehousing as it has enough energy to even jump from its enclosure. Other than that it's been a pleasure to keep.

I agree completely. Obt was my first tarantula. An adult. I wasn't sure of the sex at the time and I didn't care. I do realize they are probably not typically recommended for beginners, but I loved mine. I set him up in a glass enclosure with plenty of substrate, hide, fake plants, some moss and a water dish with a screen top and cage clips. I never had any trouble with him. He ate, molted and just did his thing. And tbh I got a big kick out of the occasional threat posturing. I thought it was hysterical. Thanks again 🕷️

What's your experience like if you dont mind sharing. My wife and I are nervous about getting a Gooty. But that's one of the 2 I would really enjoy. At least in my thinking. Any info would be appreciated. Thank you

      @witcher1973 Před 2 lety +2

@@jessecastillo3841 One thing i will say is this, make sure you have a transfer friendly enclosure for when you need to rehouse. Mine is one very bolty and very fast spider and you definitely dont want one escaping, other than that its a very beautiful and rewarding tarantula that hates light. I would say that if you take your time and dont spook the tarantula during a rehouse you will be fine.

I notice no one ever mentions P. Regalis on these 'top' lists. I remember one at my old workplace at a tropics display centre and she had one hell of a feeding response, but she also had an more defensive attitude that most, so in short, a bit of a diva xD
When feeding, she'd either ignore you completely, or throw herself at the tongs and scare the wits out of the poor soul holding the tongs. Will never forget that T, she certainly left one hell of an impression, and P. Regalis are of course absolutely gorgeous

Though if I get a balfouri I'd want to keep a communal so I think the metallica is going to win for now lol. Totally agree with your assessment of the OBT. I haven't had any of the issues I so commonly read about, maybe I'm just lucky, idk, but I think a lot of the mystique around it probably comes from keepers who aren't ready for one and set it up improperly. Mine's made a web castle with several entrances and I don't recall ever getting a threat pose.
BTW, you forgot to mention a big factor in the OBT being a good beginner old world in that the husbandry is very simple. These things are tanks and don't require much maintenance or humidity at all.

The one inch Darlingi gave me a threat pose when I nudged it with my paint brush, but I waited until it calmed down and got it housed without much trouble. My first tarantula was a p metallica, and no, I don't mean it was my first old world t, I mean it was my first ever t. I spent a long time researching the species beforehand though, so I knew what I was getting myself into. I think that you should get the tarantula you REALLY want, even if it's your first. As long as you do your research and you have fully committed yourself to taking care of the animal properly, then I'd say that even as a first time keeper, go for whichever species you want.

I started with a G. Pulchripes, then bought an OBT for my second tarantula sling just because I saw one on sale online. I was looking forward to handling it because I loved its orange color, which kinda looks like that orange donut. Good thing I started researching before the OBT reached half an inch big. Your channel saved me from a lot of bites, thanks! My OBT is going 3 inches (Chaco at almost 5 inches) and making amazing web and tunnel networks! Now I have more Old world fossorials than New world terrestrials because I just love seeing the tunnels they make in their enclosures.

Crazy! I'm looking at your merch, watching old videos in the back ground. And guess what comes one the screen the same time I scroll past the framed poster.... The Golden Blue Leg Baboon!! Ughh I love coincidences. 😀

My OBT had a terrible attitude, and it was my favorite T. I wouldn't be really nervous to keep anything but aboreals or Haplopelmas.

I'm making the dive today. I have a 2 P Regalis and a H Pulchripes coming in as my first OWs. I've been building up a compilation of notes and research for 3 months in prep. I'm so excited to finally make the jump and get some of my dream spiders.

Hi Richard, another great video. I must say that it is hard to argue with any of the animals in your top three as I have had zero problems with any myself. I was not aware that H. gigas was a fisher and that is a really cool thing to learn. I have also had no problems with my P. fasciata, she is gentle and slow moving for me. Keep up the good work.

Love the video bud👍👍. I have 4 of the top ten and love them. Don't have the H pulchripes but it's definitely on my list. Keep up the great videos. And yes I agree that the OBT is great with proper housing they are very calm, mine only get defensive during rehousing. I have the red color form 1 juvie and 2 slings. The juvie has had 3 rehousings and the slings none so don't know how they are just yet but the juvie gets quite defensive during the rehousing but readjusts just fine shortly afterwards. The colors on the RCF are amazing if you like bright orange and reds. The velvet orange on the O philippinus is amazing too.

    C. darlingi was my first old world! I received it as a surprise freebee with my second tarantula ever (an A. chalcodes) so I was...a bit nervous. But so far its been pretty chill and I really like it. It bolted up the tongs once during a rehouse but that one was my fault. It's been awesome to watch how fast it grows.

100% agree. I got an obt and h.pulchripes as my first old worlds. My obt sling is skittish but it hides 100% of the time and has been extremely easy to care for. My H.pulchripes is my most active T in my collection, my best eater, always out and us super chill with feeding, watering and rehousings. Highly recommend. ❤

I was really excited to see your opinion on this topic, as I remember messaging you & you had said this had been a topic in the making for a while.
I found this list to be quite interesting as my first OW's were a c darlingi, m balfouri & I Mira slings. The darlingi was definitely the best of these choices as it is the 1 most on display & has made an interesting webbing, also is fairly docile but will occasionally display defensive traits. Both the Mira & balfouri remain hidden & are both quite bolty.
I then decided it was time to expand purchasing a h pulchripies & a p metallica. The pulchripies is a beautiful individual bit can be abit unpredictable, as for the Metallica it usually just retreats. I wasn't sure whether I would ever get pokies but these from what I had researched were the best way to go as they smallest & less defensive of all + the colouration is amazing

Seriously, get the h.pulchripes. It's one of experienced keepers favorites for a reason. I'm newer to the hobby but mine is my favorite in my collection. Super easy husbandry, active and always out, personalities vary but mine is just as calm as any of my new worlds, great feeding response, and just a stunning T.
