What do you think chaps? Worth ÂŁ1500??
No
No
Not even close to price it should be.
Well worth it. Show me another 5k 27â monitor with thunderbolt and good build quality for less money? LG Ultrafine is cheap plastic crap.
Firstly, i really don't think 4k vs 5k really makes a difference on a 27" display. Secondly, you can't just charge double the price just for slightly better built quality. Samsung and Huawei really make high quality displays.
Function over form is my funda.
I currently use the Cinema screen (1440) which I purchased 11 years ago when I moved away from Windows. I purchased an 11â MBA, wireless kb, trackpad and mouse. It has all worked flawlessly for 11 years, it all still looks new and modern. I am about to go to M2 MBA and 27â Studio. I paid $1000 for the Cinema Screen in 2010 and never regretted it. This new 5k is about $1600 which is about the same price in constant dollars and I donât need to fiddle around with add on camera, speakers, mic etc. It is all there. I will turn 80 soon so this might be my last set up. I am sticking with what has served me well. The 5k will be great for my eyes. I have seriously studied the Dell 2723QE 4K which looks very nice too but in the end I will use this for a lot of years as I have my last set up. Now I must find a use for my Cinema Screen! It is still awesome and like new still. The Intel MBA (3 years old) already has a new home ready. Really enjoyed your review. Well produced and very helpful.
I still use the 2007 30" Cinema display -- with windows 11 (and 10 and 8 and vista and xp and 2000) and it works great! Never in the last15 years have I missed having any control over the display. It has been flawless and no matter how often I look at the studio display or the pro display, I have to say, why would I?
Turning 80! Damm
Update. It turned out that the head of school at our church school needed a computer upgrade so she got the entire set up, monitor, MBAir, kb, trackpad, mouse and optical drive. It was exactly what she needed. I got a deduction!
My M2 MBAir plus Studio monitor and new peripherals all work so well. I added a Samsung SSD as my Time Machine. The monitor sits on a low level aluminum base which includes more front facing ports for USB A and C, card reader etc. itâs really a perfect set up for me. Update: I paid nearer $1300 for the monitor. Got a ârefurbishedâ deal from Apple.
Your review and update really made me smile, I hope to be 80 and keeping up with current tech like you. Wishing many more years and blessings for you!
2:03 - I love that you highlight the absurdity of charging the Magic Mouse.
Other than that issue, Magic Mouse is totally fine.
@@aninditabasak7694 It is not, it is too smol
Best review Iâve seen on the Studio Display!
I agree đ
Great point! I noticed that the M1 Max 16 inch Macbook pro will do noise reduction to smoothen the skin and it looks great on calls. I've been so confused on why the Studio display's webcam is getting bad reviews, but it makes sense now.
If the studio display has the A13, either it hasn't been optimized or it isn't as good as the A14 chip in neural engine/ISP tasks.
The new M1 chips should have the bandwidth to able to that processing to the display.
I ended up buying one. I love macOS but it never felt right with 3rd party monitors. Waking them up, plastic, poor speakers etc. I really wanted a monitor that was plug and play, with no fuss on the Mac. My favorite setup was always the 17 inch MBP and the Apple Cinema Display. This basically replicates that for me with a 16 inch MBP and the Studio Display.
this is exactly why i got the studio display. waking up my 3rd party monitor every single time is so annoying. The plug and play feature is really usefully for my mac studio and this studio display
You just saved me $1600 bucks. I was actually ready to buy this but your review of this monitor makes this one sound no different then my Dell 27" that's works perfectly fine. You didn't make the decision for me of course, you helped me understand more about this monitor. TY
I love your tech rewiews they are very precise
You're one of my favorite tech youtubers!!! keep up the same video style forever
Great review. I ordered this monitor because of the speakers and web cam primarily. My wife has the LG 5K screen and the web cam and speakers suck. Should be getting my BOTTOM of the line Mac Studio delivered soon. Upgrading from a 2009 27" Intel imac.
It lacks a lot of what I want. Higher update frequency , HDR among other things. But nobody seems to care that it has 5K. And appearance and sound are also important to me. So it's still a bit of an uncertain deal. But buying a larger screen such as 38 inches with a lower resolution attracts me even less.
Thank you for reviewing it with Windows. You're the only reviewer so far. Such a bummer that one can't control the brightness.
Why would you ever buy this for a Windows machine
@@techtipsuk I would buy it for my Mac but also want to use it with my work windows box. I only want to have one monitor.
@@techtipsuk Because it's the only monitor on the market (besides LG 5k) that allows Windows to scale perfectly. You buy anything else and you can't get proper clarity.
Great honest review. I just bought a Apple Studio and am not sold completely on the monitor for that price. It looks amazing. But the lack of ports, and brightness adjustment buttons annoys me.
Awesome review! I'm so curious about the Studio Display and you answer all those questions - and more!
best review ! especially for windows compatibility part. I only see it in your video !!
Was considering this. Using a MacBook myself and a Windows machine for work. But the brightness adjustment issues on Windows mean this really isn't suitable for me.
I have a separate webcam anyway. But I thought it would be nice to have everything integrated in the monitor. And not just the webcam, but also good speakers and a USB hub. I'd happily pay a premium for the Apple build quality as well. But I was already on the edge considering the price (was browsing Facebook Marketplace to look for used ones), and then the brightness issues make it a no-go.
The LG UltraFine 5K also seems quite popular. At least, prices for used ones are also quite high. So.. not sure about that either.
Guess I might end up with a 4K screen instead.
Hi, thanks for the review. Could you also make review of new Dell U2723QE which is half the price, has narrower bezels has HDR support and should have deeper blacks and has also a 32 inch sibling?
Thank you for elaborating on the Studio Displayâs usability with Windows. Any workarounds for changing the brightness of the display? Max brightness would be unusable for me, even as a Mac user primarily. đI have a Magic Keyboard. Could I plug that into the back of the display to change the display brightness while on Windows? Just spitballing.
Nice work!
I'm wondering how you can get 144hz from your LG 38WN95C on the Mac? Can you share the type/model of your cable? I have the same monitor and Macbook 15, late 2018 model but cannot get more than 75hz.
honestly I have no complaints with my Studio display. Incredibly sharp which is perfect for my photography. Would I pay $1785 (US price with taxes and fees)... Absolutely fkn not! Lucky for me... I bought mine for $900 from some guy who received two as a donation. Again... the price is ridiculous but for $900..... i couldn't resist.
I know that adjusting stand is expensive. It should be able to rotate at its price. However, I saw the breakdown of the XDR stand and the engineering behind it, and it did take some work to perfectly balance the weight of the display and the internal mechanisms.
Another skimo buying ice..
Thanks for the video Chap, I love my Studio display and I have also verified it to work on my work PC too and that laptop uses USB-C and everything works fine on that too.
Great review of the new Studio display! Thought I would add that in the past all Apple Cinema monitors were not fully functional or controllable when connected to Windows computers. Last Mac Cinema Display that I had was in late 2010 to go with my mid 2010 MacBook Pro. I really liked the integration! Am getting a new base model Mac Studio (+ 2TB drive) and of course the Studio display with the nano textured coating and ability to adjust the height. My old and last MacBook Pro in mid 2010 had the mat finish on the screen. Iâve always loved the mat finish - even when we had to develop 35mm film into photos! đ
Huge thanks for talking about how it works (or doesn't) with a Windows PC!
thanks for the review..i was wondering the old 5k intel imac backlight is it single zone or ..?
Excellent review. Thank you.
For the brightness issues on Windows, have you tried the Boot Camp drivers for Apple Display + the Pro XDR USB driver? Presumably they'll be releasing another one specifically for the Studio Display at some point too.
They did release it and it's available for download.
I would love to wait for a 32" iMac... any thoughts on if we might see one this year?
The background light behind your desk looks nice, can you share a link to it?
Due to backlight bleed I changed 2 iMac 27 (late 2015) and after a few months of use and the 3rd one started to behave like that and was repaired
Ask to be replaced
Thank you for good information. It is the best among the detailed analysis contents of the studio display.
Just going to wait until it has ProMotion and local dimming zones for greater contrast. It looks great but it costs nearly the same as my 55inch OLED. Not worth that amount of money.
True just go buy the oled 42 inch and change to PC mode then calibrate it voila way way better than apple studio
Apple MiniLED + ProMotion display comes probably later this year or in 2023, and I'm guessing it will cost around $3500.
@@marklouieadame Yeah, but unfortunately there are no 5k TV's, which in turn means you can't get perfect integer scaling and text clarity will suffer.
About the camera: Chip inside the monitor should be able to reduce the noise, it's a software issue. That chip was used in iPhones and iPads, and he handle images there very well with lot of other tasks.
I just got mine and set it up. It's so nice and the build quality is so much better than the LG 5K ultrafine I have been using for the past couple of years. It just fits the rest of my desk much better.
Yep the design is flawless
Seven Hunnid on CZcams is underrated asfck
I'm pretty sure it's the same panel used in some LG displays, camera and speakers are a bonus - though for the price I'd want a beefier camera on a monitor that thick.
@@amirpourghoureiyan1637 in the short time Iâve been using it, the display does look better than the ultra fine I replaced. It could be that the glass finish and better coatings make a slight difference.
I agree. This is why I ordered the Apple Studio Display as well.
Nice work. This is the most insightful and dare I say beautifully done review.
Can you connect 2 systems together or is it one at the time?
There is a big issue with the display that reviews have not yet addressed. No its not the unacceptably horrendous webcam. The issue is that the monitor runs its own operating system (IOS) to manage the camera, microphone and speakers. Like any device running a consumer based operating system, it can't be run indefinitely without restarting it or you run into issues. If you don't restart your iPad or iPhone for weeks or months you will eventually experience all kind of issues. I got my studio display on March 18. yesterday my camera started acting up, then the microphone and speakers would stop working sporadically. After hours with Apple support it was determined the monitor needs to restart. BUT there is no way to do it, it has no power button and no way to actuality shut it down or reboot/restart properly. So the only way to do restart the display is to unplug it from the power source for a minute and plug it back in. We did so and its working fine again. However, doing it that way means you are crashing the build-in OS rather than properly restarting it. That of course can potentially damage the display just like crashing your computer every time you want to restart it.
I think the recent firmware update allows the brightness to be set via Mac and not revert back to 100% once plugged into a window machine. Can you confirm?
I ended up getting the Huawei Mateview 28 instead. When it's on sale it is just 1/3 the cost of the Studio Display w/ height adjustable stand.
Great review. And thank you for keeping it real regarding Apple crookery. "Baffling" indeed! That's why I went with the Dell Ultrasharp.
Thank you so much for talking about using windows on this. This is so important for me because my work pc is windows and I donât want to get a monitor if I cant use my windows pc as well.
What would you say is a comparable display but for less money? I was looking at the Dell U2720Q but are there any other options?
Great review as always. Iâve watched a few of these and I always tend to favor your reviews a bit more. Looks like your recommendation falls in line with a few others Iâve watched where if you have expendable money, buy it, if not there is better options out there so thank you for your candor. Can you provide your LG model please? I really like that display as I have a 34â Acer without thunderbolt but I am switching to Mac now so Iâd rather have thunderbolt. Thank you
Thanks! It's the LG 38WN95-C
Yo TechChap can you please post a comparison video between this monitor and your LG 48 inch? i wanna see how the picture comparison is compared to an OLED
Is it possible to connect both a mac and a pc to this monitor at the same time?
Hi, there is no on and off switch, does that mean you need to keep de monitor plugged in at all times, or could you use a brick with a switch. Will a brick with a switch do harm to the monitor if you use it regularly, because when I leave the house normally I switch everything off. Also what is the power draw if you keep it plugged in? Could you also check if it possible to hook a Nintendo Switch via a "HDMI to USB Type-C 4K60Hz Active Adapter M/F" up to the monitor and see if it works wit sound and all. Thanks in advance, good luck.
I have read on reddit that you can adjust the brightness of the Pro XDR Display on a Mac and it stays at that level when plugged into a Windows computer. I wonder of that might work with the Studio Display as well...
Thanks for the review, I will buy LG ultra wide 38â with 10bit and 1ms response time and 144 refresh rate, ordering it along with Mac studio m1 max 32c gpu tomorrow đ
Can you please post a link to the dell laptop wallpaper. It looks cool.
One of the best reviews Iâve seen so far on the Studio Display! Bravo to you! Most CZcamsrs are Mac only users and stay only within the Apple ecosystem and thus only compare their experience with the lg ultrafine.
So I got the sense from your review that youâre still not tempted to switch from your ultra wide. Would you be tempted to switch with the xdr if money wasnât an issue? Thanks!
The successor to the Pro Display XDR is coming at WWDC with 32" 7K resolution mini LED and ProMotion display.
@@aninditabasak7694 that would be wonderful! Source?
@@agentsmith64 There is a leak that confirms 7k will come eventually. It will be expensive as hell, of course.
Excuse me, can the speaker and microphone work properly after USB-c to HDMI is connected to windows PC? With a MacBook Pro, I really want to buy this, and then there is a windows PC of my own that usually plays games. It would be better if I could use the docking station to connect through HDMI.
Does it work with windows 10 laptops and PCs with thunderbolt port???? Please i need to know because I'm thinking of pairing it with my Dell XPS 15 9560 2017 model.
Got an amazing LG 4k 27" that has hight n rotation stand for $600 and the stand for this monitor costs $400...WoW đ€Ż
Very honest review. Thank you.
Can you connect Windows laptop and MacBook at the same time? . May be using one of the 3 USB C (Non Thunderbolt port) I understand only one will be charged using thunderbolt.
I thought there was a display control app for Intel Mac or PC Windows & isn't this TB4 now & is it PC TB4 compatible or backwards to Mini DisplayPort (non TB) on the other USB-C port? Or Can I with a TB3 / 4 hub?
Is it possible to connect a ps5 to the display via hdmi to usbc adapter? Would be nice to us it as a gaming monitor aswell.
Great balanced review ! đđđ
Yeh! Itâs pricey, thereâs no getting away from that! Probably the big deal breaker for many people. But honestly, I saw this unit in the Apple sore the other day, and really I didnât seem all that bad! If I could afford it, Iâd buy it!
my lg cx48 is hard to switch from, especially considering that its $600 cheaper(i got mine for just under $1k) compared to the studio display
When I look at the exact LG minitor you have it saids 21:9 everywhere? I want that extra height compared to the 27â Studio DisplayâŠ
LG UltraWide 38WN95C-W
what if i want to use it as a second monitor for my mac studio AND my pc?
I found my LG 4K has HDR option when on my Macpro5.1 that has opencore but I think its basic hdr10 still looks better tho it me.
shame tho the Apple studio display has no HDR Button at all. Humm ill stay with having my LG Screems at 4k
Can i screen share onto it from my ipad mini for art projects?
Excellent as ever, thanks. SO, if I follow your drift, a new Mac Studio M1 Max, but with LG 35WN73A-B curved monitor (ÂŁ499) plus my existing Ruark MkII speakers would give me a nice home set up AND, ( as a budget wary, non gamer, working for pleasure and NOT to professional standards) save me a grand on the Apple display? Makes perfect sense, so why is the Apple display still so tempting?
Hello, beautiful Review, I have a question they will send me an Apple Studio Display very soon and the truth is I have not so modern equipment in terms of connectivity I have a Mac mini Late 2012 and a Mac Pro 2013 Trashcan and I don't know if a thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 converter can work for me I hope you can help me
I love love love that you give us your unbiased opinion on Apple products and you're not just an Apple fan boy telling us how great EVERY Apple product release is like so many other youtubers that use a lot of Apple gear. Thankyou!
What do you think of the 40 inches 5K LG Ultrawide is it better than the LG 38-inch Ultrawide? I will love to see a video of you making a comparison.
Great video tom đ
Interested to hear your comment with respect to your LG monitor speakers: 'Great!' Really? I have an LG 27UL850. A bit smaller than yours, I bought it for the USB C connectivity and the 'promise' of speakers. They're awful! The MBPro produces better sound when the lid is closed and one of the aspects attracting me to the Studio Display is the opportunity to clean up my deskspace and recover the kind of sound I used to get from an iMac. Is the LG sound really comparable?
Great video and I agree. I'm a mac user but this display is too pricey for it's feature set. It doesn't serve MacBook/Mac mini users since it is too expensive, and Mac Studio users don't get HDR or high refresh rate but get speakers and a noisy webcam in favor of Center Stage which is less useful on a desktop than a tablet. Seems like Apple just didn't want to make a larger iMac but wanted to charge that same price for the monitor minus the mac, keyboard and mouse/trackpad. Great build quality but too expensive and a feature set that doesn't really address any segment of mac users perfectly.
I am now a fan of yours. I thank you!!
sweet. look forward to saving up and buying on the second hand market in 2 years. If Apple actually had proper scaling then a 4k would be absolutely fine but fuck Apple for making me get a 5k monitor to have more real-estate without blurry UI lines.
Hopefully Apple release a more worthy monitor in a few years for this price and this sticks around as a "budget" option.
Great video. I would think the grainy webcam picture is problematic, as other reviewers have noted. This does not appear to be a problem on the newer MacBooks, so why is this an issue on the new display? Will Apple address this with a software fix?
Apparently Apple are aware of subpar webcam performance and will improve with update
@@Thetechchap Studio Display firmware 15.5 is out with great results.
Not supporting HDR is ruining this for me. Second place is not being able to change between stand and vesa mount. A lot of people complain about 60 Hz but I don't play games so not a big deal for me.
If it was 30 inches with HDR and 120 refresh rate yes but as configured hell no. back in 2000 I bought my first Mac a G4 Cube and 15 inch Cinema display which lasted 8 years.
Since the Studio Display is so thick and has speakers and cameras, is it possible that it will be the next iMac eventually?
A lot of valid criticisms here, but whether internet commentators approach this from an Mac-centric point-of-view or a Windows-centric one, there are a few key items that a clearly missing from these reviews: (1: There's talk of how there are many other aftermarket alternatives out there, but there isn't really detailed coverage on 5K (or 4K) high-quality Photoshop-level monitors with VESA-mounting options and the ability to pivot 90Âș for use in "portrait mode" (great for DTP work). (2: if you want Apple's VESA-mounting option, you have to choose it when you order; you can't VESA-mount a monitor that's ordered with a standard mounted. Not mentioning this is a major omission. (3: There's also no mention (maybe there should be) of how using a non-Apple monitor with aftermarket accessories (add-on webcam, desktop speakers, headphones) can actually be a better setup. I've been thinking about LG's 32UN880-B 32" UltraFine Display Ergo, which isn't 5K but still has the ability to pivot. I could then add a webcam and speakers, and probably have a comparable setup for several hundred dollars less (and probably throw in a good desk arm for VESA mounting).
I really appreciate the review - I am one of those content creators (motion graphics) that is Apple only. I will just blindly get any display they make, as this is the industry standard. Nice to see some other options.
The lack of features will be a deal-breaker for the vast majority of people whoâre in the market for a new monitor. The studio display is overpriced, the built-in webcam is mediocre, thereâs no HDR support, it uses an IPS panel instead of mini LED, thereâs no promotion support. In 2023, most other brands wouldnât dare to sell a 60Hz monitor in this price range to mainstream consumers.
Is it actually possible to run a 6K display at 120hz over Thunderbolt?
Curious, why do you think there's going to be new displays on offer? An XDR display update?
Where can I download the wallpaper on the thumbnail if possible
What do you suggest to buy instead
I'm having issues using the LG 38WN95C-W Monitor 38" with my M1 Pro, which sounds like you had also been using. I cannot seem to get fonts to look clear. I've tried BetterDisplay and other apps to correct the issues I'm having, but text still really fuzzy and I've been unable to resolve. Are you doing anything special when using the 38" LG with your Mac?
Iâm having the same problem. Iâve heard a lot of great things about this monitor from Mac users, but I the image is too âblurry â for my liking.
Too bad, really like the size and aspect ratio. Itâs probably because of the unusual sub-pixel arrangement.
great review, the display is nice but honestly, for a screen in 2022 there should be more. 27â itâs too small, normal IPS itâ too old tech. bleeding should be a NOGO in 2022⊠i really hoped at least for a 30â display for the price of 1600$. The built in camera & spatial audio sound system is not the reason why i would buy this. sure, apple discontinued the 27 imac so they needed a replacment, thats the reason why you get a cam & a soundsystem in this screen. Apple makes more $ with this strategy, buying the mac studio + mac display. i was really excited about the display but thats too expensive and a too small screen with too old tech. if i need 3 monitors for my macbook, why should i buy 3 screens & all with built in cam & speakers.. that makes no senseâŠ. i just wantedt a bigger screen for my macbook from apple for a fair price. discontinuing the imac 27 was not a great idea..
27" is totally fine, not too small. And according to you, Apple shouldn't have released the Mac Studio and Studio Display since it overlaps with the 27 inch iMac instead replacing it with an Apple Silicon 27 inch iMac, and then people would crying for an Apple branded display and the mythical standard desktop that sits between the Mac mini and Mac Pro. Is that what you want, right?
@@aninditabasak7694 He just said that the monitor was a mistake
I would argue that if you're just a regular person writing things I'd get a glossy 1080p display. mac os scales natively to 1080p(it does not on 4k) and you can get very nice sharp text in 1080p also it will be even cheeper.
Iâd get the base model 12.9 inch iPad Pro since it does have HDR is mini led has touch and is portable
Finally theyâve upgraded the Thunderbolt 3 Pro cable! And they now have a 3m Version!
I am not aware of any alternative 27â 5k monitors other than the LG which is almost as expensive and not as nice. 4k is an awkward resolution on a 27â if you are using MacOS.
Okay so cool, but now can someone make a video covering the experience of using a Studio Display as a 2nd monitor of an iMac Retina 5K 27â
- Does the audio work in both screens?
- Which camera will be used?
- Howâs the workflow?
can I have a link for the LG UltraWide?
The question isâŠ. What comes quality and spec wise even close to it at a lower price? I donât think there is anything out there.
So, I've seen this in a few videos now. On a smooth surface, it looks like the Studio Display moves SUPER easily instead of staying put. Any thoughts here?
It's just right actually. Hard to explain, but it does require a bit force
Studio Display has enough friction to not slide around on a smooth surface but it moves easily, which is a good thing. I can tell this because I'm using one right now.
Yes Studio display is too expensive. I ordered the base Mac Studio today. Can you please do a video of cheaper monitor options (with built-in speakers and webcam) 27" to 32" for Mac Studio? Thanks. There would be many people in my boat who don't want to splurge on this - not worth it Apple monitor.
how its comapare to huawei mateview wireless
price is a bit too steep. I'm thinkking of getting the Samsung M8 smart monitor
All I wanna know is can you hook it up to the 24â Mac please someone let me know.
So, I think I'm confused. Can you not hook up a keyboard and mouse to it and use it as a computer?
I just receive mine, plugged to MBP M1. The webcam is not good at all. Center stage does not work with Google Meet, the quality of images is just as good as a 20$ webcam bought 5 years ago on Alibaba...
Ime currently watching this at 4 in the morning bc i can't wait to get My s22ultra
I think you missed out on the iPad Pros and the new iPad Air compatibility which makes this display nearly worth the price as no other display/monitor can interact with iOS the way the Apple Studio can.
But if used with a Mac OS device only I think you right it does not warrant the money compared to what you can get with the competition. ÂŁ1500 is steep especially with consumers and business trying to save every penny they can with commodities becoming less and less affordable.
