Any cord can be removable if you pull hard enough
nice
Like Sir Pterry Pratchett said, all fungi are edible…once!
It actually is removable they didn’t pull hard enough watch other videos
@@KCkohler When they removed it, it literally left gouges in the cable, and flexed the display so much they thought it was going to break. Before they ended up being able to remove it, it became a question of if Linus was willing to break the display. That's the level of force require, with an additional person to brace it. That is hardwired by almost any standard.
@@KCkohler That's not simply "removable" as "removable" in this context would be akin to "unpluggable." In reality, what is required is "disassembly." This is further reinforced by Apple's own technical specs which reflect that the power cable "is not removable."
The funniest thing about the cable is they engineered a proprietary connector and then made the plug non user removable. This is so they can attach cords for different regions as needed at time of manufacturing. Apple understands the benefit of modular design but actively chooses not to pass those benefits on to its customers.
Its crazy that Apple had gone completely out of their way to make it needlessly complicated on EVERYONE. Even logistics-wise, instead of packing the monitor with the corresponding region power cable its shipped to, they have to solder the power cable in and hope to God they have sold enough and have enough for each region these monitors are shipped to. If something does happen to the cable, that’s one more problem for the customer service team and Apple Store staff to deal with than they have to, and it would all be easily fixed just by making the cable removable.
@@JohnSmith-pn2vl Cables do fail, because the get rolled over or pinched or used as a chew toy by animals. Another point Linus made is the cable it ships with is too short for many use cases and you obviously won't be able to buy a longer one if apple says it's not removable.
@@JohnSmith-pn2vl *Apple be like lmao
@@JohnSmith-pn2vl This cable might:
1) Simply not be long enough for a user's setup
2) Be chewed on by a pet
3) Be an ugly black colour when the user wants a white cable to match their Apple aesthetic
No matter how you look at it, there's just no excuse for this. It would be easier for Apple and better for the end user to ship a standard power cable.
@@JohnSmith-pn2vl and also, sorry, but with a UK plug on it won't fit through most of the fucking circular cutouts on desks, so get te fuck with your useless hate has no merit. That stupid fucking disc is also probably too big, there was nothing wrong with the magsafe connector from the iMac or a SIMPLE FUCKING KETTLE LEAD.
The "Wow" feeling with Apple before, was, "wow, wonderful easy to use versatile tech".
The "wow" then became: "wow, really expensive".
Now, the "wow" feeling: "wow, frankly stupid".

Wow Apple, you broke yourselves.

I am starting to suspect that Apple puts more effort into designing their boxes than their products.
And that's another reason I switched to Android over apple.
How can you say that when all competing monitors are made of cheap plastic? LG and others take a panel, slap some plastic bezels on it, and call it a day.
@@ThomasVanhelden Am I supposed to care about how it's made when I could care less about what it looks like if it works just fine?
@@somebodyyoudontknow2464 We were talking about the effort put into the design, so I was talking about how it is made and what it looks like. In other words, the design.
You said you switched to Android because Apple doesn't put enough effort into the design of their products, but now you tell me you don't care about design? You seem like a fanboy that wants his cake and eat it too.
It's undeniable that Apple puts more effort into designing its monitors than other companies do. That's just a fact. Whether you care about that is a different thing entirely. Different people have different preferences and look for different things in a product. You might not care what it looks like, but other people, including me, do. I actually care a lot. The aesthetics of something are an important feature to me.
Apple does put a lot of effort into designing their product. Otherwise

LMAO the hardwired cable moment on WAN show was beautiful
I love the drop in shots where numerous other staff members are disgusted with that hard-wired cable. It's such an obvious deal breaker, I have no idea how it got implemented.
it is removable its really hard to but you can take it out Linus took it out on a wan show
So you are driven to buying a new display when it the cable breaks. To be fair though I have never broken a single power cable be it monitor or power supply or anything but that said I wonder how much of that is due to it having a detachable cable so I can keep it out of the way when I move stuff around. Obviously having it is vastly superior to not having it and no clue why they didn't go for the old macbook style magsafe connector which is by far the best power connector design ever made.
Courage(TM)
@@HimmelWeint it is stupid that it's not easier but they took it out and put it in a few times and it was fine so it's not really a big deal just unnecessarily annoying

What really gets me is the cable isnt even hardwired, it can be pulled out and replaced. This is apple being apple thinking people are just gonna toss out a monitor that is already overpriced and buy another overpriced monitor to replace it and some will. What will happen is A. most people will avoid it or B. amazon will start offering replacement kits with tool to pull the cable out.
"most people will avoid it" I hope so, but I don't expect it. Just look at all the bs devices people buy from apple
That proprietary cable is replacable. On the Wan show Linus saw that there is a spring mechanizm holding it plase. Then we saw pics (leaks) of apple proprietary tool to diactivate the mechanizm. They made it this way so its cheaper for them to make regional plugs but also force you to buy Apple care as only Apple is able to replace the cable.... Brutal. Just buy the LG display , f***k those bastards.
The people who buy Apple products are the type to throw away the monitor and buy a new one. Not because they are all rich but because they're stupid
This solution is genius by Apple.
They have to conform to IEC 60320 standards because of the power cable's high voltage.
Manufacturers have done one of two things up until now to solve this issue:
1) Use a C13/C14 connector.
2) Creating a proprietary connector and soldering it to the display.
Option 1 would mean they must make the display thicker because the C13/C14 doesn't fit in the Studio Display. Apple cares about aesthetics, so they didn't want to do this.
Option 2 is not friendly to consumers because the display has to be replaced when the cable breaks. Actually, so many TV and HiFi equipment manufacturers have taken this approach for decades, and no one bats an eye.
Apple did something innovative here; they came up with a 3rd option. They made the cable non-user removable to comply with IEC 60320 standards, but they can remove the cable with a special tool. This way, they can replace a broken cable for the consumer when it breaks.
@@RWNTRS What are you talking about?
As Linus brought up in the WAN show... engineers spent TIME to design that unremovable cable. It took MORE EFFORT to make it hardwired than it would have to go with an existing normal removable cable. These people went out of their way to give their customers the middle finger and take their money for what shouldnt even be a repair, but just a cable replacement.
@@sys-administrator Apple already had a shorter version of the C14
@@sys-administrator Yeah and of course an expensive magsafe connector Had No way of fitting in the Budget... Im sorry im not fronting you but these kinds of decisions are ridiculously anti-consumer
@@sys-administrator As shown in the WAN show, the cord is not soldered, it is just attached with a non-user serviceable connector. I am 100% sure the same amount of time used to engineer this could have been spent to find an already tested, user-serviceable connector that would fit in.
@UCADKGdldXLC4xMkA_ipqZvg a c14 connector can fit in there, you’re talking out your ass with that comment. The display is thicker, and has ample interior space and for the price point they are selling this at they could easily afford to add a MagSafe adapter. This is just an anti consumer product plain and simple. Stop shilling for apple.
why? because they can. if not the casuals, the hardcore would accept it anyway.
It was so simple to not have any controversy, all they had to do was to put MagSafe like in the m1 iMac, and the same arm system as in the ProDisplay XDR
But that would make their margins lower than 90% they can't do that
And actually using the A13 for something useful. As Anthony said, tvOS built it or at least AirPlay built in would be cool.

Thank you guys! There is a HUGE issue with how this s**t has been reviewed so far - they are trying to move it as passable, which is plain ridiculous. No HDR, the most idiotic non-removable cable, unutilized chip (where is FaceID???), no variable refresh rate, moron approach towards stands and mounts and they charge 1400+ for this crap. Tech journalist must hold Apple accountable for such excuse of a product, otherwise they will keep pulling this over and over again. The audacity of them calling it 'accesible' is beyond me - it's a pure money trap for the less tech savy users. Verge gave it 6 out of 10 even though they mentioned it's old ass backlight technology - 6 out of 10 doesn't do justice for such prefatory tactics towards their consumers. To replace your cable, you will ship the whole thing to Apple Care, for which you pay of course, and not be able to use your product whole it's getting 'fixed'. There is a power cable standard for monitors that's being used for years, they didn't had to ducking reinvent the wheel, heck, use the magsafe if you wanna blood suck more cash.
Apple needs to be held under the same standard, as other brands, for what they release and media should remind them that.
You guys, are the single best review of this display so far and I'm 99% sure it will remain that way. Thank you Andy and all else behind camera for doing the right thing, instead of eating the rotten Apples.
Plus all of the reviewers praising it for the design should show it being used by someone who isn't the optimal height for the monitor. Put it on a good looking heavy duty VESA mount (which adds at least $75 to the total cost), to make it actually usable by people who aren't an average male, and see what that does to the overall aesthetic. Otherwise, they can review it with a stack of papers on the bottom to put it at a comfortable viewing angle, and again review it that way.
Forcing users to pay a premium just to make it usable for a huge majority of the population who aren't 5'10" (178cm) should have been panned by most reviewers, but instead it's barely noted by a majority of them. Meanwhile basically every other monitor oriented towards professionals has height adjustability included because it's blatantly obvious to every manufacturer that this feature is vital to ensuring that the tall man and short woman in the office can both see the screen.
Or just dont buy apple 🤧
The only reason they are driving up the prices is because they are losing loyal customer base.
Apple PR gives money and preference to the media. Not many will blow that cash cow for completely objective reviews.
but if tech journalist do not praise everything that apple does and held them accountable for crappy and expensive products they might not get them for free next time they release hardware?
Yeah that's why I love LTT. LTT HAS the best content and doesn't not need to kiss ass to get the products. Other CZcamsrs do that so they can get views cause most people think of apple as luxury and reviewers want apple stuff so they can get views
I have one in the office for work, but I am having issues with USB peripherals connected via the USB-C on the back of the display dropping out all the time, I am trying to run the one-wire plug and go setup with my M1 MacBook Pro... I do not have these problems using my old Thunderbolt Display at home.
So I have a small USB-C to USB-3 hub on the back, connected my wired Apple keyboard and wireless Logitech mouse via a USB dongle plugged in the keyboard, the mouse connection often drops out for like 0.5sec so when I drag and drop something it will mess up.
Another annoying thing is I have wired headphones connected to the display via a USB-C to 35mm dongle, the connection will constantly drop out every 30 mins or so and switch to the monitor audio, and the headphones won't be recognized any more, I will have to unplug and plug back in for the OS to see it.
The firmware is updated to the latest on both the OS and Display, and still didn't fix it just wondering if anyone else have this issue?
Apple, I gotta say you knocked it out of the park with this one. Hard wiring the power cable into the monitor, why don't all monitors have this? Fantastic idea Apple, so futuristic, the design of it is just so perfect; you looked at what every other monitor has, a stupid detachable cable and you put that Apple spin on it and hard wired it into the monitor so it can never come out, not ever. Can't wait to get my hands on one of these monitors so I can give that cable a little tug and feel how secure you've made it Apple. Good job!

There is a big issue with the display that reviews have not yet addressed. No its not the unacceptably horrendous webcam. The issue is that the monitor runs its own operating system (IOS) to manage the camera, microphone and speakers. Like any device running a consumer based operating system, it can't be run indefinitely without restarting it or you run into issues. If you don't restart your iPad or iPhone for weeks or months you will eventually experience all kind of issues. I got my studio display on March 18. yesterday my camera started acting up, then the microphone and speakers would stop working sporadically. After hours with Apple support it was determined the monitor needs to restart. BUT there is no way to do it, it has no power button and no way to actuality shut it down or reboot/restart properly. So the only way to do restart the display is to unplug it from the power source for a minute and plug it back in. We did so and its working fine again. However, doing it that way means you are crashing the build-in OS rather than properly restarting it. That of course can potentially damage the display just like crashing your computer every time you want to restart it.

LG V20 also has always on the secondary display that can be switched off manually at the settings.
Dynamic Island of iPhone 14 reminds me the touch bar of MacBook Pro.
The 23/24 ACDs had permanently attached cables as well. Not just power, but power and inputs DVI and USB etc.
if you're going to put the chip from the phone into the display, why not also put the camera in there and have the worlds best webcam? We've always been told that laptop webcams are shite because theres no dedicated hardware for image processing like there is in phones. Now there can be and it still looks like a shite webcam? Whats the point
The point being, two years down the line, they'll do the exact same thing you said and charge you 2x the price. Apple can very well make a perfect monitor (well perfect for 99.9% of worlds population, but we'll always have 0.1% those kind of people who'll nitpick) with the kind of resources they have available to them, but they won't, because it's bad for business. It's just borderline unethical business practice, but they know people will still buy their $1600 e-waste.

that's was also my first thought when i saw this thing. i was expecting an imac but was just a monitor...
it already has a mac inside, A13 couldve been a M1
The only monitor I've had in eons with any hardwired cable was also a CRT, but it's the VGA cable that's hardwired, it still has a removable power cable. Thank you Packard Bell.
The face and tone of voice: I don’t think it will be! That was priceless!
Apple continues to slap their customers in the face with pointless little problems that have been solved years ago and yet they just keep saying "yes please may I buy another".
bc loyal Apple customers usually aren't the ones to look at extensive reviews before making a purchase like this. much less do any sort of research on the competition. Besides we aren't even the target demographic for these type of products, to most buying these money is not an object
And then go around spamming comments with defensive insults for you daring to criticize anything about their Holy Apple.
Apple is a fashion brand. Fashion, almost by definition, puts form over function.

@@nitePhyyre they do have good stuff and btw i hate apple with my life but we have to admit that their new macbooks with the m1 are really good
So strange, you'd expect the product designed to have a great screen, great speakers, and camera would be better than the laptop; but no.
Apple really dropped the ball with this monitor, it's so over-engineered and yet it fails to deliver a great experience.
They spent most of that R&D on the non-user friendly cable unfortunately.
But it is still better than any other 4K desktop display, or windows laptop monitor, out there (with 2x the resolution).
@@77dris how exactly ? cuz if it's resolution, 8k monitors do exist and by your logic are better than this. Or you could get a 4k monitor with better refresh rate, bigger size, better brightness ( and/or with real HDR or Oled panel) or that's cheaper actually.
The only real "apple to apple" (pun intended) comparison is the 5 years old (November 2016) LG UltraFine 5K. And that monitor is worst yes, but a lot cheaper, especially if you need height adjustment (then with the price difference you could get a whole M1 mac in fact).
I can agree that it's one of the best desgined monitors out there (but without a replacable cord), not that is just flat out "better" than other monitors. It depends on somebody's needs.
The amount it bounces too thanks to the flimsy stand is so distracting
Anthony is the vibe that everyone who works in IT feels after exactly 10 years in the industry.
I was sitting here the whole time seeing the potential of the product, and if the potebtial was engaged on, I would have bought 2 of these on mounts for use in my van setup (I live in a chevy gladiator). Forget stream upscaling, imagine having an old iphone and just pssibg compute jobs to your desktop and its display while out on the go. They could have a home-hub sorta deal and you sync your idevice to your monitor to run private services, or pull services from your desktop for your phone. And then you don’t have console access on your phone, but on your mac at home, etc etc. literally endless possibilities with how apple USED to develop extra technologies into their products (xgrid compute, easy net sharing, fw transfer/disk/external cd mode, and other cool things a powerbook can do with a 2012 mac pro).
Its like the cheesegrater line of thinking died and now its all polished and enameled piano black dust and fingerprint covered shenanigans that look and operate horribly or plain ass are designed stupidly like the monitor above.
I have even seen the plug in the monitor above used in other tech just fine. Its not like they couldn’t have made a poker plug and you just squeeze in a spring or something, its legitimately that they design their products to be replaced by the same product again to mill money. Thats how they got to where they are in the evonomy anyways.

THANK YOU for resonating the frustration I have with this monitor. So many people say this is a great value at $1600 and there is no way in hell that’s true. I’m confident I could pick out a solid display, webcam, mic, and speaker setup and STILL be under the price of this overpriced ips display.
Not a 5K one. There are only two 5K monitors on the market right now, and both use the same panel. The other one costs $1299 and is in a cheap plastic case that wobbles horribly with the tiniest bump to the desk it is placed on. As a 27" 5K iMac user, I am disappointed that this did not have mini-LED (or even _any_ form of local dimming), it's just the same exact panel with a brighter backlight for nearly the starting cost of the 27" iMac. I can understand not being 120Hz ProMotion, since Thunderbolt 4 can't support 5K/120Hz. But the lack of local dimming is a big misstep IMO.
When my iMac dies, will I buy this? Probably not, a nice 27" 4K monitor would be just fine, or maybe. 5K2K ultrawide. I'd rather put that extra money towards a higher-specced Mac Studio. But being one of only two 5K monitors on the market, and a rather significant step up in build quality from the $1299 one, it was priced at what Apple thought the market will bear. And I suspect it will sell just fine amongst people who are accustomed to the 5K iMacs/iMac Pros.
@@Justin.Franks Is the difference between 4k and 5k at 27'' that much? I kinda feel apple makes 5k displays because nobody else does so they can set whatever price they want.

I don’t get it. It’s twice as thick as the iMac, costs more than an iMac, and has a non user friendly power cable and mounting options. How does apple manage to make such nice products but consistently with one major incredibly stupid and deal breaking design flaw. This is honestly worse than putting the charging port on the bottom of the Magic Mouse.
Because if it was as thin as the 24" iMac, they would've had to do something that would make Tailosive throw it out of the window

This is especially hard to look at because Apple had the perfect solution from the G5 iMac: standard power connector with an end on the Apple-branded cable that makes it sit perfectly flush when plugged in. It meets the branding criteria AND lets professionals use existing cables.
If I had to guess, the internal justification for the permanent power cable, is all the problems with the ~2007-2015 era iMacs that if you tilted the display forward, then backwards, it would frequently disconnect the power cable *just enough* to kill power while still looking/feeling "plugged in", and this design cuts down on those tech support calls.
First thing I would do after unboxing is mount an IEC socket in the hole on the stand and splice in that power cable. Lol
