    Getting the Retina ~218 PPI resolution for me is the determining factor for displays since I work with a lot of text. This limits me to 4K in a 24inch, 5K in a 27 inch size. Not many options for 5K 27in…Studio Display is a good option for those requirements.

    Software developer here… Bought a Studio display and after using it for 10 minutes combined with another LG 27inch display, I bought a second one. Screen quality and build quality is awesome and next level. Can’t compare it to the regular comparable monitors but the Apple Studio display is very very good. Expensive yes but so are all other Apple products. Additionally, it works flawlessly and looks beautiful on my desk. Very happy camper here 👍

      A side note is that if you want a Windows desktop to use the Apple Studio monitors (me for VR development only) you do need a special cable (DisplayPort) that is capable of doing it. Not every cable can, even though the specifications match (very annoying).

    • @TimothyBrake
      @TimothyBrake Před 6 měsíci

      @@smartlearning6390 Sure. After 1 year of using the 2 Apple Studio Display monitors (glossy), they are still amazing. I’m using these for professional software coding for 8-10 hours each day, connected to a macbook pro. These are the best monitors I’ve ever had without even anything coming close. Text is crystal clear and sharp. The build quality is next level and looks good on a desk. The sound is also of such quality that I don’t have additional speakers on my desk. The camera supposed to be a bit less but I don’t see any issues and it works as expected.
      The only downside was (but working now) trying to find a way to also hook these to my Windows desktop for VR coding. It only accepts thunderbolt cables but my desktop only has HDMI and DisplayPort. No cable worked except the cable mentioned in my previous post and I also don’t yet have audio using the Windows desktop but that could be me and possible that it can be done.
      If you have the money and it doesn’t hurt you financially, this is a no-brainer purchase.
      I just asked a colleague that also purchased a glossy one and he mentioned he’ll never go back to none-glossy.
      So they are very good monitors and you won’t be disappointed. Go to a store and check them out, play some music, use the camera and experience them first hand.

But since this is a display only I guess it gets a tougher focus on its features. At the end of the day all it is, is a bit too expensive. The LG ultra fine 5k is great, but compared side by side now that I have both, the LG has significantly more IPS glow. Also The LG just doesn't calibrate as well with the M Macs for some reason. And now that you can find the studio display on sale for 1350, it's a no brainer. Also just a note, the first studio display I purchased had a backlight bleed and the speakers didn't sound right. I exchanged and the second had zero light bleed and speakers sounded noticeably better. its weird.

    @valzartsetc5359 Před 2 lety +8

    There is a big issue with the display that reviews have not yet addressed. No its not the unacceptably horrendous webcam. The issue is that the monitor runs its own operating system (IOS) to manage the camera, microphone and speakers. Like any device running a consumer based operating system, it can't be run indefinitely without restarting it or you run into issues. If you don't restart your iPad or iPhone for weeks or months you will eventually experience all kind of issues. I got my studio display on March 18. yesterday my camera started acting up, then the microphone and speakers would stop working sporadically. After hours with Apple support it was determined the monitor needs to restart. BUT there is no way to do it, it has no power button and no way to actuality shut it down or reboot/restart properly. So the only way to do restart the display is to unplug it from the power source for a minute and plug it back in. We did so and its working fine again. However, doing it that way means you are crashing the build-in OS rather than properly restarting it. That of course can potentially damage the display just like crashing your computer every time you want to restart it.

    I was hoping Apple would have done a base model 24" 4.5k screen (Same as new imac without computer) as the entry level monitor near the $1000 price point, and they could have marketed that as a possible second display for existing iMac users, or as a single or dual monitor setup for Mac Mini/Mac Studio etc. I think The 27" 5K panel needed to be mini led (though high refresh rates don't seem to be possible with current bandwidths so I'd be fine with 60hz) and could have landed in a higher price point like $2599-3000 ish (which is what 32" OLED monitors are going for), and that could have been marketed as a companion for MacBook Pros or for higher end creative studios using super powered Mac Studios(where 27" iMacs were so plentiful). Then you'd have the Pro XDR at the top to top the specs for both size/resolution/price.
    I think that would have been a nicer eco system with a lot of possibilities for personalization which would possibly bring in a varied customer base.

    Rant: I don't understand why the only monitor people compare this studio display to has to be this one LG that just happens to use the same seven and a half year old panel. Compare it to some current Eizos or Dell Ultrasharp or Asus ProArt or whatnot... You know, something that actually makes sense IN A STUDIO in 2022! This Apple display doesn't self calibrate, doesn't do HDR, can't be used like a wacom tablet ... What studio is apple targeting with a monitor that doesn't do studio monitor things?
    Said it before, I'll say it again: This is an imac without the mac for the price of an imac.
    Naming: Studio display is a dumb name because it's a generic term. Remember the Cinema Display? Of course you do. Do you also remember the Cinema HD Display? And the LED Cinema Display? Now tell me which of those come in what sizes? .... See what I mean? ;-)
    But monitor naming can be super simple. Dell is actually doing a great job there. For example I still have a U2711 somewhere. It has not been in use for years now but I still remember the name because it follows a pattern. It's U for the ultrasharp model line, 27 for size in inches and 11 for the year the monitor hit the market. U 27 11. Simple.

    Purchased it with the Mac Studio M1 Ultra, Monitor is way too small for the studio, height adjustment is very good, the standard one shouldn’t even be considered because is sitting way too low. I wish i ordered the Nano Texture its very reflective compare to the old iMac 27 but on all reviews people said quality is less and reading text annoys the eyes over time.
    Ports at the back of the monitor! Why don’t they make it work with the Mac Studio for example let us connect our hard drive to the monitor and act like its connected to the mac studio, it has an iphone 11 chip in it then why not make it work with the Mac Studio.
    I managed to crash M1 Ultra couple of times with just basic stuff, MacOS has bugs still that is not fixed over the last 10 years. Back Cable not coming off, in the studio we usually use a different cable that we can connect it to power conditioning with this we cannot do that and its a pain!
    Turning on the Mac Studio that little power button at the back is very very inconvenient, why not adding a feature where we can turn the Mac Studio with the keyboard? Is that exist?
    Opening MacBooks now it turn on by its self why not adding that feature to the Mac Studio?
    I wish the Monitor was bigger with Mini LED and higher refresh rate!
    In my opinion in the studio you need an updated pro XDR, studio display is not worth the price. But as there is no competitors this looks good and works well, speakers are not bad webcam is there when you need it! 👍🏼

My first reaction was to imagine Steve Jobs being shown it without height adjustment and then being told about the significant increase for that basic facility. Would he have sent the designers back to the drawing board? I hope so. I kinda disagree with the criticism of this thing. As someone who has just gone through the shopping experience for an external monitor for my MacBook Air I can say that the Studio Display seems reasonably priced for what it is. To suggest that it's overpriced when a bare monitor with similar specs from LG costs $1,300 is silly.
    The fact is that this thing is beautiful, has excellent mics, excellent speakers, and what should be an excellent webcam (apparently there's a software fix coming), and has excellent support. And unlike other aftermarket options, is guaranteed to work flawlessly with Apple CPUs. I think these advantages are well worth $300.
    The only real downside is that it costs $1,600, when for lots of us that's just more than we want to spend on a monitor even if this one is worth what they're asking. So, for me it's a sub $500 LG 4k monitor with add on speakers and using the webcam and mics on the Air.
    Bottom line is that if I was willing to spend $1,600 on a monitor the Studio is the one I'd buy.

    even the price is 'ok' . it is not cheap, but the execution is Apple perfect - which we expect from Apple - metal case, very good speakers, decent webcam and micro, 5K resolution, glossy display with very good visual contrasts, 600 nits..
    It is a replacement that had to be at least as good as the iMac5K displays.. On the pricing : if you take a high-end iMac5K and MacStudio Max with the same specs in disk and graphics, you are getting the same price... If you were using a cheaper iMac5K, you could pair the display with a MacMini M1 or even a nice Macbook M1. Perhaps Apple could make a MacStudio or MacMini Pro to fill the gap between the MacMini M1 and Studio Max

    I can't wait to get my Studio Display and with it knock off the current plastic LG (that cracks and pops when it cools down and keeps me from sleeping) off my desk, along with the external speakers and the dongle.The 'small little quirks' are what brought me to iPhone, then Mac, and now the Display.

      Me too! I got an iPhone back in the day in order to resell it. Used it for a day and was hooked. It was such a smoother, more pleasing experience. I’d never had a feeling of delight with an Android phone like I experienced with the iPhone.
      I have a buddy who is a lifelong PC-builder and Android user. He got a Mac randomly through a series of circumstances. He said, “I am really surprised by how much I like it.” Now he’s a Mac user.

    Watching this on my lovely Studio Display. he mentioned the 3090 isn't a good deal. Not a gamer so had no idea how much it cost. Googled it. And it's the same price for a GRAPHICS CARD. I'd argue the Studio Display is a great deal by comparison. 5K: there is no substitute.

    New qd-oled monitor is also available in the market at that price.... That blow away any lcd or mini led monitor...... And you don't need 5k at 27 inch.... I prefer 1080 on 24 inches 2k on 27 inches and 4k is awesome combination with 32 inches..... And you mention speaker seriously dude someone is buying 1600$ monitor and they don't have bookshelf speaker or studio speakers or decent headphones..... Casing that's ok for me if someone like metal shell then that's ok personality i don't care... I am into high refresh rate, response time and color accuracy......

    I'm looking forward to Mac Studio + Display 2.0 when Apple get's all the feedback and improves on what they have, or forgot to do, and or should have done. Same with the Macbook Pro.
    But hey... M1 Ultra seems awesome, right?

      I prefer to use Mac products, and a lot of what was presented with the Mac Studio and Studio Display seems like a step in the right direction. The trouble is it doesn't feel like Apple stuck the landing many of us were hoping for, but is still very much expected of Apple.
      To those braving the waters of being early adopters, thank you for being the test subjects for this experiment and putting your money down for this. Hopefully your feedback will help improve the 2.0 models that will likely come in the next two to three years. Until then, I'm going to save up more money and hope my current Macbook Pro doesn't... well... I know my 2012 iMac is basically useless for anything besides browsing now.

    This is the fairest review I've seen of the ASD. For sure there are negatives, & I'm not going to defend the semi-captive power lead, or the overly short Thunderbolt cable, but for me the build quality, the resolution. & colour quality and absolutely the "it just works with Apple" in terms of scaling and power on are must haves. Those little niggles are soul destroying, & I have no time for them in my life. Yes I could get a bigger screen with a higher refresh rate for less. Yes I would appreciate that, but not at the expense of "it just works".

    at least they should have had this model and an actual studio version. Possible OLED panel and 32 inch size. Both they can easily buy from LG.
    Even if they make it a big upgrade price - wise... it would be so much better.

      I saw a theory on this that makes a lot of sense. The Studio Display is too thin to use a standard 3-prong power cable, so Apple ended up making a proprietary power cable. In order not to lose this unique cable, Apple made sure it wasn't easy to lose by making it non-removable. That seems likely since whenever I put hardware in storage, I remove the power cable and toss it in a drawer. Usually that doesn't matter since all the cables are interchangeable, but this one isn't. If it's unique and ends up separated from the monitor, it's quite likely you'll end up with a giant $1600 brick with a missing power cable.

      @@techinrl9869 They could have used a shallow version of MagSafe like they used on their recent iMac. The MagSafe on the iMac is probably shallower than the non-removable connector they used here. Additionally, there is absolutely no way that a monitor draws more power than an actual, full-fledged computer like the iMac, which gives no excuse for this imo.

    • @techinrl9869
      @techinrl9869 Před 2 lety

      @@unstablefusion3 MagSafe only works for DC power with an external brick. The PSU was built into the monitor, so MagSafe couldn’t be used. For the same reason they couldn’t use MagSafe on the Mac Studio which also has its PSU inside. Why did they put it inside? Probably because they had the room, but I can’t say for sure.

    • @unstablefusion3
      @unstablefusion3 Před 2 lety

      @@techinrl9869 Sure, but the only problem here is that almost no other monitor that exists today has an unremovable power cable. Out of all companies, Apple would be the one to figure out a way around that.

    Bottom line. The Studio Display doesn’t quite know what it’s supposed to be. As a partner to the Mac Studio (and to justify the price), it should have at a bare minimum a 120 hertz refresh rate, and probably mini-LED too. At the other end of the spectrum, it would be super-nice with the Mac Mini, but it’s way too expensive for that.
    And the Center Stage webcam is a miss on both - while you could make a case for it on a family iMac, the Mac Studio and MIni seem more likely to be used in office settings where users are less likely to walk around as they’re video conferencing. Image quality would seem more important here, but it seems subpar with the Center Stage setup. 😕
    Maybe Apple will do better on the next versions. A 32” Studio Display with the above-mentioned improvements would pair nicely with the Mac Studio. Even at Apple prices.
