Shockingly easy to fix, if you can get to the membrane. Replace the existing membrane with cellophane or mylar (thermal blanket material would work) coated with a high-value dielectric, which can be as simple as gently wiping water with dish soap, then letting it dry. You can use powdered graphite, too, but make sure it doesn't reach the edges. Do this after applying glue to the frame, and stretching the film over it, so that the film adheres to the frame. If you use the right kind of film, you can use a hair dryer or heat gun to "shrink wrap" the film on the frame, which makes it easier, as you don't have to stretch the film taught and glue it to the frame in the same step. After mounting, trim the film to fit the frame, as it's vitally important not to allow any shorts between the film and grid(s). That's also why you coat the film in a dielectric, so as to allow a high charge to build up without arcing. Electrostats use a ridiculously high voltage (hence the need for the 'Energizer,' which is basically just a special high-voltage transformer), so guarding against shorts is CRUCIAL. Another thing worth noting, humidity affects electrostats negatively, as the moisture impedes static build-up (it's the same reason static shocks are worse in the winter/dry season). I once helped re-build a set of old Soundlab M-1s, which have a *curved* frame, which made it harder, but it was still doable. Getting the film stretch taught and attached is the hardest part, so a tiny flat panel should be a breeze for you.
I saw these being used in a professional recording setting, Netherlands Bach society's video and intervew of making bwv 768 show the audio engineers using them. They struck an impression on me so I immediately recognized them.

Another thing worth noting, humidity affects electrostats negatively, as the moisture impedes static build-up (it's the same reason static shocks are worse in the
winter/dry season). I once helped re-build a set of old Soundlab M-1s, which have a *curved* frame, which made it harder, but it was still doable. Getting the film stretch taught and attached is the hardest part, so a tiny flat panel should be a breeze for you.
Ah yes today got better
Thank you wade, I look forward to every Thursday and wait to see that notification:)
Keep up the good work
00:07 I remember that pea car in the top right was made specifically for an advert for frozen peas back in the mid 00s here in the UK.
Frutiger aero ahh cars
4:52 the AKG’s look like the headphones Keith Moon used, only part missing is the duct tape that kept him strapped in.
Lost my edging streak to this video. I’ve been waiting too long.
I saw these being used in a professional recording setting, Netherlands Bach society's video and intervew of making bwv 768 show the audio engineers using them. They struck an impression on me so I immediately recognized them.
I’ve been waiting on this video for years. Since the video you mentioned them for the first time.
