The sound is staggering - but compared to their usual pricing that's exactly what they are lol. They're a brand item.
For $420, is at least expect in-line audio controls
Actually they make really headphones
@@LuvzToLol21 Grado isn't some lifestyle basic bitch brand, so don't expect features like that. Sound quality is what matters. Now with that being said, at $300+ you would expect a detachable cable or at the very least a better quality cable, but it's Grado.
As someone that has seen people using Grado headphones in the subway and the bus: Please don't do it, everybody hears what you hear. Especially don't use them in a library.
Why not
@@momocamara Sorry for the late reply but they are open back so they bleed noise like crazy(people can hear your music). Also you can hear everything around you.
Of course they do, thats the Magic of the Open bags. But the Hemps don't bleed noise out, but let the noise in for soundstage, anyways Open bags arent meant for going outside.
also don't wear shorts during the winter: it lets all the cold air in.

They make the same thing for like the last 20 years

why cant americans pronounce ibiza properly ? its ehbeefa not ibeeeezzaaaahh, this aint vengaboys
Always found Grados to have really irritating trebles for my taste (and checking measurement data it would seem that almost all their models do have a significant treble boost going on), but many people are fans, and otherwise they're capable headphones. But they're certainly not for everyone. =)
*30 years
@@girlsdrinkfeck Most people just read the word and say it how they are used to those letters working together. its the phonetic pronunciation typical for most words with those letters in it. You have to admit that its a unique pronunciation from the normal words we americans encounter. Ive never met someone from ibiza, or even had it come up in conversation, so i can see how someone would assume that its pronounced the way it looks. Theres no way someone would simply guess correctly that the z makes a "f" sound or that the first I makes an "eh" sound.
Its an open headphones with long and thick cables. Its designed for stationary use not on the bus.

Grado Hemps is definitely my favourite Grado when it comes to sound, but the comfort is ridiculous, stock pads are torture devices. I swapped them with nyczaj audio EP01 pads and now I can listen for hours! They also have other comfy mods, like thickly padded wide headbands and aluminum gimbals and rodblocks, I honestly recommend nyczaj audio to all Grado lovers.
1:22 As a Cleveland boy myself, I really felt that.
0:20 Probably pointed out down in the comments many times already, but Grado started out way back in 1953, though didn't make their first headphones until 1991, when they came with the SR100, SR200 and SR300 models.
Grado uses the same box and similar pieces for most of their headphones, it allows them to save money on that and use higher quality on the drivers itself, where it matters!
stop quoting dankpods
I’ve had a pair of SR60 for like 10 years or so now, the cable is dying and I’ve been wanting to just mod them for a while but hadn’t had the chance of getting the parts :(
You can buy cheap replacement jacks. Just need to solder it on
My 8y old SR80s had its wires fail last year, so I modified them with detachable wire and also ran the wire for other cup over the headband, so no annoying Y split hanging under your chin. Also a coiled wire which gives more flex than typical straight one. Whole mod cost me maybe 10 bucks in materials. Though, requires soldering, hot glue, and a hot air gun for taking apart the cups.
I use my pair of SR60s for gaming... I found them lying around my house, barely used. They used to be my dad's 😂
The cable for my SR80 failed after 6 months. I repaired the cable by opening the cup, taking the time to even put a stopper to help the cable to not unsolder from the driver. Then it failed again after 3 months. After a while, I just stopped using them and bought Bluetooth Sennheisers... No more freaking cable!
@@GuillaumeB7 I just refuse to buy headphones without removeable cables. Surprisingly I've never actually broken one of them yet. The ports seem to just be more stable than attached cables.
James, can we talk about "shuts-pa"?

I was on the market for a new speaker for my guitar amp, and I found a hemp speaker called "Cannabis Rex", and I thought it was just a joke... Then I found out through many professional and forum reviews that a hemp cone actually makes for a very nice warm but punchy and accurate sound response (aka great for Jazz/Funk/Groove/Rock). Sounds great, and bringing it up makes for a funny opener with musicians/easy way to gauge someone's likelihood to smoke a J.
I've had 2 grado headphones that I had used for years, pretty similar to these
They sound great, they were comfortable, but had 2 glaring issues. One was the hair - it ending up stuck in the drivers and go through the membrane, causing annoying buzzing (sometimes fixed by blowing/sucking air on the back side but not always and it's oh so frustrating)
The second is that the cables below the caps eventually twist and turn enough to get damaged. Both my pairs ended damaged this way and I really tried to be careful.
My "noise leakage" experience was different as well, mine did leak a lot of sound, in and out - but had amazing soundstage I guess thanks to that
If you're thinking of buying Grado first time don't buy these, and look into the problems they have. All in all I used my two pairs so much I can't not recommend them, but I wonder if my money wouldn't have been better spent on some audio technichas
Hair? How did your hair end up in the drivers?
I really like the look of the wood with the hemp composite. It’d be cool in a setup with wood furnishings
Heard these... amazing sound. Get the G cush pad its a MUST for these. They have enough bass unlike other grados, the mids are wonderfully natural sounding. Male and female vocals sound soo nice and pleasant and it has just the perfect amount of treble detail. Not too much treble like some of the other grados. instruments like strings are amazing in this. piano sounds great too. I would highly recommend this headphone with those pads. Worth every penny!!
G kush pad😉
I used to like Grados. Until one of the small pieces that stops you extending the headphones too far came off my SR125s and got lost in the ether.
I emailed asking them if I could buy a replacement part , they refused. Instead they wanted me to send my headphones from the UK to the US (insured - a reasonable cost), pay for a repair and then pay for shipping to return them for me.
After that I decided to not buy from them again. Companies like Beyer Dynamics will happily sell you replacement parts and I think that's important for expensive headphones.

Them dan-dee cheese curls no doubt beat cheetoes tho
Used a few different grado models following this design. Hasnt changed in 30 years and typically the sound quality is far above the price, but the build quality and comfort balance it out and bring them back down to match their price. The sr225's are a pretty good sweet spot but again, not comfortable for a lot of people but sound as good as anything twice the price. If i had to pick out a "best sound for the price" etymotic has everyone beat hands down.
Loved the video, but
kind of wished they provided the frequency response graph for headphones like these, to let the viewers understand what to expect as a listening expereience.
also would be nice to have specs like impedance power and ohms, so you know if you need a DAC for this headphone (which you dont. most Grado headphones are really low ohms that you can use easily with just a phone)
Go to the channel Dankpods! They do what you're asking for all headphone reviews.
"they look cool" they look like you stuck giant corks in your ears
Exactly my first thought as well! lol
The hemp part looks like something that belongs in a guinea pig cage from a few feet away 😬
Do you soak'a 'da cork? You seem to be a real cork'a soaker.
I love how he sorta pauses and looks up like he is trying to remember what Grado debuted at CES 1994 lol
James is really excellent at reviewing headphones.
He litteraly fucking forgot to talk about the sound. Which by the way is incredible
Sarcasm intended?
I have a pair of SR80 and while they sound great, it is super annoying to deal with the free spinning "feature" they will inevitably get twisted to hell and one side of my pair broke the connection. I initially planned to mod them with a detachable cable on each end so that the could continue to spin freely and the connector would just keep the cables straight, but after getting a new pair of headphones I never got around to it because I am also one of those people who eventually get uncomfortable wearing these due to the shallow pads.
You litteraly never talked about the sound here. Which by the way is incredible
I own the SR225e and it's definitely a unique listening experience. Not everyone likes the super clear highs, but there's really nothing like listening to a pair of tightly matched Grados.
i have my sr125 e, with g cushions for a couple of years with a jds labs el dac and a monoprice liquid spark amp, love them at the right time when there no noise around, really enjoy them
If all the info about the headphones, the company and the audio in general was on top of James' head, I am truly impressed
Finally, Grado content. Love my 325is.
Those are different and this video sucks at representing it. Those are the most bassy grados ever and the experience is quite unique. Every sounds really close to you soundstage wise but in a way that make you feel like you're first row with still good instrument separation
They must be very good on the high end and sounds good for mellow music.
I love my Grado SR-80i's, still my go to headphones after ten years of use and several mods
If I'm not mistaken "Steve Guttenberg" on CZcams has a video where he tours the "Grado" production facility. Or at least I believe it is "Grado", Steve is local to New York, and he does great videos on Audio products, well worth checking him out although I warn you now he is a die-hard audiophile but without any of the bull.

@@iLoveTheseRemoras
I for one (especially as Finn) am not really sure where you did pick the info that hemp would be illegal in Finland
( in fact, to quote from a website:
"Unlike many other countries, Finland never passed a specific law banning hemp production. This meant that cultivation never fully disappeared, especially in rural areas. The 1990s saw a revival in the industry, and since then, hemp has become a vital part of the country’s economy again"
( to be fair, I for one am not fully certain why between 1950-1990 the hemp production went almost into zero in Finland;
probably was because how "hip"-trend importing "everything" in general was during those years.
EDIT: A summary after further research:
World War 2 -> decline in fibre-plants in general -> both hemp and flax eventually got replaced by cotton-imports.
I highly recommend to look for article called "History of Hemp in Finland" originally written by Erkki Laitinen )).
A clarification:
It is true that both "hemp" and "marijuana" are are both cannabis-plants.
The main difference comes in the concentration of "tetrahydrocannabinol" (THC), which usually is less than 1% in hemp, while on selective-breeding this is often over 20% in marijuana-cultivation.
In fact, the overwhelming amount of (normal) cannabidiol subdues the effect of THC, thus also making the "easy of pain" and other "stereotypical cannabis" / narcotic-effects pretty much non-existent in hemp.
---
So yeah, in Finland you can find hemp production in pretty much all forms;
from-to and everything between oils to cat-litter-pellets, to name couple of examples.
Sure, we necessarily at the moment do not have a "power-production" in hemp-fibre-production that we would be making all the ropes needed for example.
But we're getting back on this since hemp-business a little by little.
---
More companies need to do matching. Having drivers that sound even slightly different is super annoying.
Do you guys think that the single cable mod would work on this? I'm pretty interested, but realized that I hated the Y cable on my Grado SR60i when I moved to my AKG K700s.

For reference: 'hemp' is the term used for the plant variety with low THC content. For the high-THC variety the terms 'marijuana', 'weed' and the (incorrect) 'cannabis' are commonly used.
Just before anyone starts making jokes about 'smoking hemp' or such. Though high in CBD oil, the best way to consume those are by making hemp tea or so. Very calming and soothing, and also completely legal :)
Have my RS1 for almost 20 years and still the best headphone for me there is.
"Were these made as a JOKE?" like you mean those two in the thumbnail?

I mean hemp is a good replacement for wood and paper in theory. For about 30 years it's been considered as a solution to cutting back on deforestation as hemp grows 20 times faster than trees and can be used for basically the same functions. It just not as durable for things that need tensile strength like building structures and buildings. It's just it requires a large change in how people view hemp for it to really be attainable. In theory it would be cheaper to do in the long run and less wasteful but again, people would need to be more accepting of hemp otherwise it's just going to lead to schools complaining about kids taking paper and burning it to get high.

I loved my SR80s, they sounded great, value for sound quality is incredible but the build quality isn't amazing, same with comfort, I've rubbed my ears raw because of the thin ear pads.
Those thin earpads look so much like the cheap ones they used to throw on cheap headphones through the 80's and 90's i would hate wearing these for longer periods...
@@jkalash762 The funny thing is, they're not actually that thin. It's the mounting mechanism that makes them that way.
In the video, it's shown that when the pad is put back on, about 3/4 of it is put on the driver/cup, leaving less than a quarter for your ear.
Completely garbage design. No way they'd be comfortable for more than 30 mins.

A blunt review about a set of headphones that will leave your wallet dazed and confused without leaving the competition up in smoke.
From my experience, Grado cables are absolutely garbage.
Skin oil makes them incredibly rigid and the fact they can rotate infinitely fucks the cable in time.
Really unfortunate because I enjoyed my SR80's and Grado in-ears.
Honestly, I think their build quality in general is pretty lackluster. Like you, I had nothing but trouble with my SR80's cables (exacerbated by the fact that I had a pair with the 1/4" connector and needed an adapter to 3.5mm since I got them second hand, so both the adapter and then the cable had issues at different times), and the way the earcups attach is so flimsy with those plastic caps, I think I had to glue those back on half a dozen or more times before losing one of them and finally giving up on the headphones altogether after all the issues.
@Clayton Salvigsen These cables really don't tolerate colder climates.
Absolutely my ps1000's left driver literally detached from the headband and I had to "glue" it back with flexseal
Haha... are they beautiful? No they do the job. 3 Grado's here: cables are just fine. Just be gentle with it.

My problem with Grado headphones : They sound insanely good. Probably one of the best sounding headphones i own (GH1) but they still use cheap foam pads that are really uncomfortable and they deteriorate over time.
Disclaimer: The headband is adjustable to better fit the shape of your head.
You just bend it to shape.
Also, these aren't for public use, they're open backs with a t h i c c cable. Keep them at home or in the studio, that's what Grados are for.
