How to Fix White Smoke on the Porsche Boxster 986

  • The air oil separator or AOS is a common failure part that leads to white smoke coming out of the exhaust when you first start your car. Fortunately, it's a relatively easy and cheap repair.
    In addition to the white smoke, symptoms may include a check engine light with codes P1128 and P1130. This is how I solved the problem on my 2000 Porsche Boxster S. For my Boxster, this was part number 99610702304.

    Thank you very much for the video. I did it myself (took between 1h15 and 1h30). It saved me some cash... And indeed taking the tire off is the way to go (as James mentioned).

    unbelievable that porsche wanted to charge me 1500 and mentoined me totally different problem yesterday, now i am ordering from ebay genuine part £105 and most probably i can do it myself :) you are the god

    For me it’s the oil separator but I get the code P1141 or P1140 which leaves me dumbfounded.

      Happy to help. Since doing this video, I've found it's a little easier to access the underside of the AOS if you remove the right rear wheel.

    thank you, i will definitely check it in the morning again ,i felt that the tube that goes from the oil separator to the truttle body wasn't so tight ,but didn't tought it might be it

      That could definitely be it. It takes some working to get it back in place, and when you finally do you'll hear and feel it snap into place. Let me know how it goes!

    This is a one hour job with the car on a lift or stands. You need to remove the transmission skid plate for access to the AOS from underneath. You can get to the mounting bolts, crankcase hose, and bottom vent hose much easier than from the top. Doing the whole job from the top multiplies the time, scratches to the paint, and lacerations by four.

    Putting it back together, a little WD40 on the part that slips into the block under the bolts will help. Same with the bellows. Thanks for posting your video, It will help, I hope. This is supposed to be easy, I guess. Also some other videos suggest using a screw clamp instead of a spring clamp, might make it easier next time.

    Did that orange part sit flush against the engine (no orange showing) or did you have a bit of the orange showing? I am having same exact problem that you were having with that orange part and its frustrating. I have it all bolted up but I havent connected the hoses because of the slight orange im seeing

    Burner, Thank you for the explication and the great video. My Porsche dealer simply said that if the white smoke only occurs at startup there is no real issue. Is this just a precursor to having to replace the oil air seperator or can i trust that is not a "big deal"??? Cheers. David

      It could be normal--particularly if it's cold or the car's been sitting for a few days. If it's not a lot of smoke and you don't have any of the other symptoms, I wouldn't worry. When they go bad, they can create A LOT of smoke. Of course if you notice it getting worse, well, definitely the AOS.

    Thank for the video...saw it AFTER I had the dealer$hip do it for me. Question... after driving 10 or so miles home after work, I see smoke coming from the mid section when waiting at a red light. After another short trip he me, it's gone. Am I burning something up? Transmission? Oil? Not a definite white or black smoke. Just kind of steamy. Thanks!

      Now you'll be ready the next time it goes out! As for the smoke, I have two thoughts: 1) has it only happened one time? If so, it might just be that a little oil spilled during replacement process and just burned off. If that's the case, then it's nothing to worry about. 2) Could it be an unrelated coolant leak? "Kind of steamy" makes me think coolant. If you haven't done so already, you can check the coolant level to make sure it's not low.

    i checked the hose that going out of the oil separator, disconnected them and conected from new bit no success to start the engine

    Hi ,first of all want to thank on you videos they are very helpful, I have 2001 Porsche Boxster s wanted to ask is there any differents between the original oil separator and the after market once,thank you

      Thank you, sir! As I recall, the only after market oil separator is the URO one, right? I haven't personally used it, but I know people who have. It seems to work well, but based my experience with URO parts generally, I find they are a little lower quality. I think you're good to use the URO, as long as you're prepared to replace it a little sooner than the Porsche AOS. It's pretty easy to tell when they go bad, so you'll be able to catch it and swap it out if the URO AOS dies an early death.

    hey burner found a quick easy way..start by taking off tire..get long extension and swivel for 10mm..take two bolts out first then all hoses come off easy..took 45 min

      had a tough time finding the pretensioned clamp specifically online, ordered through dealership. Both the clamp and separator about $150. Thanks again!

    hi ,i did change the oil separator to origin variation which bought from ebay amd from some resom my car didn't start since then,i do have a crank but it's doesn't start
    tried to put some starter fluid and it started just for a second and turns of right away
    checked the fluid pump relay and it looks working fine but no success to start the car,
    any idea what it can be the reason

      I've got a pretty good idea that you've got a vacuum leak. Check all the hoses you removed. Are they all back on the way they came off? are all the connections secure?

    yes i did checked them all ,when i spay start fluid to the air filter the car doed start for a moment and turns off again so o need its something with the fuel not sure yet

      It seems incredibly unlikely that you would have an unrelated fuel problem at the exact time you replace the oil separator, but it's possible. Realize, however, that the symptoms would be the same for a vacuum leak and a fuel problem. If you have a vacuum leak, air enters the engine downstream from the MAF. The engine doesn't expect this extra air, and so runs lean. When you spray starter fluid, it compensates for this and starts momentarily... at least that's one possible scenario. These things can be hard to troubleshoot, but it might be worth another check through the area where you've been working to make sure nothing got bumped / disconnected / damaged. Good luck!       As long as you watch for the warning signs you'll probably catch it early. If you don't catch it early it can foul o2 sensors and such, but if you're paying attention, you'll probably notice it long before that happens.

    I cleaned mine with 99% iso propanol then WD40 and blew it with air. Hasn't smoked for 6 months now

    hi i tried to take out the hoses that goes to the oil separator and put the back in till they stap on but still no success to start the car ,so i guess its a different reason that the car crank but not start cant understand why

      Weird... it seems unlikely you have an unrelated problem at the exact same time you replace the oil separator... You checked all the hoses? even the ones that are hidden underneath?

      I pulled off hose while car was ticking over once..a massive implosion sound car cut off...scary moment....I think maybe be one of the hoses wasnt seating properly?....what actually happened?...3years ago?

    I had a bad cam sensor..so I replaced it..but now car runs but no throttle at all just idles then dies again

    The aos was toast on the cheap 996 i bought a while ago. Also try not to drive with a bad some for a while since it can burn up the cats.

    Did you scroll under the vehicle to get the two bots out ? at video 5:15 I did not see this part in the video. Also could you tell me the tools used to take out the old one and put the new one. I was wondering if you have to use jack stand to do this job?

      +RK RK I did the entire job from the top of the engine. It's tough and cramped to reach down in there, but I think it would be nearly impossible from the bottom. There are a couple bolts down there... metric sizes and a hose clamp. Feel around to remove each.

      Thank you for quick response. I was wondering where did you buy the part(s) and the approx. time took to replace it. Some websites are offering aos + a hose (i think it is pelican parts). And other places OEM part running about $125.00

      ***** I definitely bought the OEM part. I think there's a cheap URO part running around, but I don't trust it. Bought it online from Pelican parts or somewhere similar. I think the whole job took under an hour. The only difficult part is reaching in to unbolt the bottom of the AOS.
