  • "West Side Story" is a 1957 musical based on the William Shakespeare play "Romeo and Juliet", a 1961 feature film that won TEN Academy Awards (starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Rita Moreno, George Chakiris, Russ Tamblyn), and a Steven Spielberg film starring Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler as Tony and Maria, respectively.
This video is a discussion of the application of colour design and colour theory to more effectively convey the themes of the narrative and other character details.

I loved Maria’s first blue dress after the pseudo wedding, it was a lighter brighter shade before the more melancholy blues.

TRUE! When I first saw that dress I was wondering if it would be her final look of the film, but overall it fits well into her story. 💙

I think it was intentional. And the colours contrasting worked so beautifully... I just love see Maria changing the colors, and the Jets in blue and Sharks in yellow and orange...

Fascinating analysis! I love both adaptations of West Side Story, but while Wise and Robbins gave me a sentimental attachment to the framework of the musical, Spielberg and Kushner thematically and visually expanded it - and turned me into an outright fan.

Going into a deep dive of West Side Story as I start rehearsals for the role of Riff on Wednesday and everyone's views on the show and the information I'm learning is so fascinating
It's such a wonderful show and a show I feel like the world needs now especially with that ending of acceptance

Very interesting, in fact, a FASCINATING video!!! I remember Daniel Fapp's predominant use of red in the 1961 "West Side Story." As you noted, Spielberg's film is going for a much more gritty, dark, and dangerous realism. Therefore, his version is notably for its desaturation of colors. The only time that colors really popped to my eyes was during the "Dance At The Gym" and "In America", musical numbers-- and the little candle flame given off as "One Hand, One Heart" is now sung by Tony & Maria in a church. Thank You for your insights into how color design and choices delineate specific character arcs.

I did the play twice, and I don't remember if it is mentioned in the actual script, but it is standard when doing the play to dress the Jets in 'cool' colours--blues and greens and purples, and the Sharks in the 'hot' colors--reds and oranges and yellows.

Great video! Personally I found the new WSS color palette for both gangs to be quite similar to Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet, with red for the Sharks and blue for the Jets as predominant colors. In the America number the costumes are even red and yellow like you pointed out.
