The game-changer for Croatia was definitely that substitution of Sosa, after he was brought off, the Croatia attack looked more dangerous and thus they levelled the game. But man Livakovic was a beast. Credit to Dalic. He is a genius of a coach. Everybody thought that 2018 was fluke for him but he has been proving everybody wrong especially in this WC.

There's no chemistry between Sosa and Perišić, you can see that they often fumble passes to each other or they overlap and get confused who should get the ball. Both players are talented, but don't work together. Maybe Dalić could play Perišić more defensively like a wingback and put Oršić as the left attacking wing.

Whole tournament long there is Croatian issue with Perisic and player behind him. Both Sosa and Barisic tend to be too scared to progress behind certain area. And it makes Perisic play 2 v 1.
Sosa has amazing cross but whole tournament we are yet to see single good one. Just poor fit i guess.
On defense it's very good tho so i guess it's okey.

i mean, he only took sosa off to score a goal, because he threw on budimir who isnt a lb, also we were defending for half the game, which sosa did a great job in shutting down antony, and raphina was completely invisible. the goal we conceded however perhaps couldve been saved had sosa got there faster but oh well. i do agree sosa hasnt been his best this WC, but i can assure you, barisic wouldve been much worse, and to claim our game changer was sosa coming off, when we were looking for the goal anyway and brazil came pressing when they shouldve sat back, is a but unfair.

Commenting before watching, as a Brazillian I think the biggest mistakes were:
-Letting Richarlison play with a hamstring injury and only subbing him at the 83 minutes mark
-Replacing Vini with Rodrygo instead of Martinelli (or just let Vini play ffs)
    -Replacing Militão instead of Danilo
-And the most unforgiving, unexplicable and mindblowing mistake: Fred.
You're up 1x0, has 15 minutes to play and need to defend that result, you have Fabinho on the bench but you put Fred instead. God damn it that pissed me off so much, Fred shouldn't even be in the squad to begin with.

This Croatian match is a masterpiece of coaching. Brazil has much better players in most positions, but they were not able to seriously threaten Croatia except in the first overtime. The action for the Brazilian goal was the result of extraordinary talent, it was indefensible. If this was for a six, I don't know what a ten is. Dalić deserves much more recognition.

Croatia are very solid and patient, yes they aren’t the strongest squad in the tournament but the way they play is very effective and their experience in midfield is invaluable. People say Croatia are boring, but that’s because the midfielders know that in knockout matches you cannot afford to make a single mistake, they keep the ball and play simple passes, they don’t do stupid flashy moves to show off. Argentina will not have an easy time against Croatia. This just shows that even if you have a weaker team than your opponent, it doesn’t mean you are going to get smashed. If you play with the right tactics you can demoralise your opponents and actually win the match, Netherlands almost did it as well.

World cup finalists, crashing out in euros against spain in extra time (after coming back from 3-1), nations league final 4, and now the world cup semi finals again. Dalic can go in history as one of the all time greats of international football coaches. He didn't accomplish this with a nation like Germany, Spain, England. He did it with a team that no one predicted could accomplish anything. Couldn't be more proud of our guys, they've already made history.

  • @szevasztopol6797
    @szevasztopol6797 Před rokem +371

Giving Dalic a 6? Are you for real?
His strategy with this croatian team against such brazilian players was nearly flawless.
The plan was, when in posession, to slow down the pace of the game and have safe posession as much as possible. For Croatia posession was a form of defence, not offense. This makes total sense, as brazil has much better attackers and you want to take away the ball from them. You also dont want to loose the ball and give them a chance to counter you. This also played to croatias strenght, which is their technically gifted midfield. They were also very good defensively.
I think this was the way to go for croatia, as this maximized their chance of progression against brazil. There is not much more Dalic could have done that would have provided a better chance for his team to progress. And thats the job of the coach: to maximize his teams chance of a positive result.
So giving him a 6 is ridiculous. It's an easy 9 in my opinion. The only change that would have perhaps made more sense is to start Budimir instead of Kramaric for this game, but that's a minor thing.

Yeah, ability to make this game "dead" by croatian side was way to go and those three guys in the middle did it great. Solution is simple, Brasil should put much more pressure up the field due to way more phisically superior players. But man, trying to press Modric, Brozovic and Kovacic is heck of a job. In my opinion the biggest quality of modric is reaction to pressure teams put on him higher up, I dont see any better player in those qualities.

Exactly. Kovacic's ability to bypass the oppositions pressing is up there with Modric's at this stage of their career.
Then there's also Gvardiol. His calmness on the ball is crucial to Croatia in their buildup. In addition to the midfield, a good ball playing CB is also needed for this type of play.

This is a good overall review of the game. But, you forgot to mention few things about Croatia and how exactly did they won. Firstly, one fact is that Croatia had greater possession throughout the game, modric brozovic and kovacic looked far better and compact then brasilian midfielders. Kovacic, for me as the man of the mach, had only one technical mistake, while Paqueta and Neymar had 8 each. Also, it is not fair to say that this wasn't Vinicious' day rather than Juranovic played brilliantly in defence as well offence, so vinicius, and later rodrygo, couldn't do anything special in the game. So, Croatia did what they do the best, with one of the best midfield in the world they slowed down the pace of the game with good passing and managed to neutralize those fast brasilian attacks.
Congrats to both teams, it was a good game to wach.

If Tite is 6, Dalic is at least an 8 - cause you forgot the attacker - Kramaric applying targeted pressure on the centerbacks only on one side - so to funnel most of Brasil's balls towards their right side - rather then towards Vinicious. Most of Brasil's chances did not come from clear play but rather an odd deflection of the ball. This no manager can't control. It's often up to luck. And you also forget possession football targeted to disrupt Brasil's rythm. A great game plan. Tite was abysmal with his changes, and having half of his team on attack with 1:0 up, and 3 minutes to go.

Brazil is the best team and has the most talented players in the world, and Croatia completely denied them in the first 45 minutes and had a good chance when Perisic missed the ball by 1 cm. Second half Brazil adopted, and created some chances, but more than a half of those chances were lucky bounces created by poor clearances of Croatian defenders.
Everybody saying that Croatia had only 1 shoot at the goal, but they had some great chances during the counterattacks where Brozovic missed the complete goal, and when Perisic and some other forward players were late fros crosses by less than a second.
You also say that Neymar and Vinicius had a bad day, maybe the reason for that is Croatian Midfield line and perfect game of Juranovic. Brazil was arrogant, they underestimated Croatia, and it costed them the tournament. Just the fact that Croatia received only 1 goal in 120 minutes against the Brazil shows how well they were prepared tactically and how well they have managed to play that tactics on the field. Only thing Dalic could have don better is to make substitutions a bit earlier, as croatia was more tired due to overtime vs japan and exhausting game against belgium before that, while brasil rested the whole team in the third group match. That started to take toll around 60th minute and he made first changes in 72. This could have been a fatal mistake. But his response in the overtime was excellent, even though brasil scored, coratia have already begun looking much better, and after the goal and the new substitutions it was even better. Now croatia played with Perisic as a left back, orsic as a left winger, Budimir and Petkovic as two strikers, Vlasic as right wing (Him and petkovic also helping the midfield two now, only modric and majer were left in the middle). They made brazil retreat deep in their own half, which only shows how good croatia played in that period. Teams usually get frustrated when a midfielder like Modric who is supposed to be up in the attacking half, drops back in the defense. He has time and the vision to see the whole field and can hammer the opponents in each and every space of the field. People are saying that Messi is the difference for this Argentina team but how about a night where he faces this strong and technical midfield? So intrigued to see this match.

From my observations, Argentina and Croatia are very similar in style of play. Strong midfield with possession play and great ball recovery/turnover. It's gonna be a great midfield battle. Great defense also. After conceding two against Saudia, Argentina had two clean sheets. Then they conceded one long shot to Australia. And the two against the dutch who brought serious height advantage in the second half to score by a header and a trick low freekick when everyone expected them to use height in such situations. Two strong goal keepers for both teams as well. But Argentina has more lethal attack on paper with Messi, di maria combo. Both teams have lost a WC final recently. Both have a ballon d'or winner in the squad. There seems to be more Argentina supporters in Qatar so they've got the twelfth man. Personally if I'm a bookkeeper I make Croatia the underdog. Messi and di Maria are extraordinary attacking threats by any standard and they know each other well. Lisandro and Romero are really extraordinary defenders too. Croatia has a workhorse midfield but DePaul, Enzo and McAllister work like donkeys too as does Julian Alvarez who is famous for his pressing game. And Messi is gunning for indisputability. He has 180 minutes to prove he's the 21st century Goat and retire. If I was him I would go commando and do like Zidane in 2006 taking charge knowing it's your swan song. All or nothing. Go for broke. The last two special games of your life for heaven's sake. Argentina has also shown it can go to ET and even penalties just like Croatia. In my opinion both teams can win but the pressure is on Argentina and Messi. The game will be decided in midfield. If Croatia doesn't control mid as it usually does they are finished just like in 2018 where Pogba and ngolo Kante showed Modric dust.

Neymar does not defend so Paqueta and Casemiro were left by themselves in transition, and quite exposed. I think Brazil's dominance is due to the fact that they have a better squad overall, but tactically they were quite poor.

    @willing_to_learn Před rokem +8

I don't think Tite deserves a six. He saw how much issue they were having in the midfield and didn't bring on support there. Someone like Bruno Guimarães would have been huge in this game. His late subs were very questionable. Their tactics in the second half of ET was some half-baked monstrosity between trying to park the bus or keep play up the pitch which is precisley why they choked. I don't know what Fred has on Tite but he didn't deserve to play over Bruno given recent form or Fabinho given the state of the game. I would give Tite a 4 at best for this match.
Dalić set up in a way that let his team punch above their weight, and he did what he had to do by putting in bodies up the pitch after the first goal even though their quality is lacking. I don't think there was much he could have done better really. Croatia just don't have the sort of quality and depth that Brazil have. But as a manager, he utilized what they do have pretty effectively imo. On the other hand it wasn't inspired and they probably would lose this 75+ out of 100 times. I would probably give him a 7.

To start with, you forgot a main FACT...Croatia had 51% of possession and took it away from Brazil who was expected to dominate in exactly that parameter. Secondly stats are just a bit of guide what's actually going on. Brazil had way more shots but Croatia had more situation that were step to lethal than jus 1 shot on target. Pasalic 100% chance was millimeters from scoring. Those 2 stolen balls on high pressure were more promising than half of Brazil shots and if Croatia attacking line was just a shadow of their midfield or defensive lines they would have crushed Brazil. Once again Croatia had 51% of the ball and Brazil couldn't dictate the tempo of the game. When Brazil scored Croatia went all in with 4 attackers and its not surprising Brazil pulled way back. One of their rare attacking attempts was punished with a counter immediately.

Modern football intelligence at its finest. The era of attacking football style on one side and defending on the other is over.
Brasil is just full of hot-headed young players and each of them thinks he's star just because of transfer market price. It means nothing and experienced players as Thiago Silva and Dani Alves understands that. To be worse, media put them as favourites of the tournament just because of that. What a mistake and extra pressure... It's a shame they were giving only 15% for Croatia to pass in semi finals and it's an insult for anyone who understand a bit of football.
As a Croatian, I was disappointed for another extra time and penalties, cause we didn't take advantage of the chances we had until the approx 70 minutes when we lost ability to control the game.
Dalić's leadership and confidence he's putting in players, his methodology and football philosophy is full of integrity and even those on bench recognised that.
