    Although England overall had a more consistent and aggressive performance, I think France played the game they wanted to and managed it well. France started off strong and scored a goal, then sat back, allowing England to be the ones forced to take the initiative and largely kept England out except for the penalty. Then France kicked back into gear, grabbed another goal, and once again sat back and forced England to be the ones “doing the work”, until once again England got a penalty (although this was quite unnecessary to concede by Theo). England weren’t able to make anything substantial happen through open play and their best chances came through the penalties and set pieces, whilst France could turn on and off at will to get the 1 goal margin win without having to do anything particularly risky. Even though France were never devastating the England midfield and defence, you never got the feeling that they cared to either and their overall game management was successful.

      Wrong.... tacticly france was perfect, they scored first and trying to give the k.o in counter attack... when england drew... france changed again tacticly and as a fact created 3 clear chanches to score... rabiot first and then giroud.. and then again giroud that scored the second gol... that mean only one thing... france tacticly was a master in that game... i am italian and this game must be read in terms of tactical actitude.... france know when attack and when defend,and thid is usually the actitude of the big and expert teams... so england looks like played better because france was always 1 gol on for all the game, living more ball ppssession to england,but waiting for the k.o counter attack to kill the game.

    When France gives you 2 pens, you can't say you're unlucky. When your opponent has 5 clear chances (Mbappe-Tchouameni-Rabiot-Giroud-Giroud) and make 2 goals of it. You deserve nothing. Not a win, not a loss. You just have to score 3 goals. And we didn't see the shadow of these 3 goals, pen excluded.
    edit: And I just remember that France didn't come to Qatar with Benzema (just the best player of the world in 2022), Nkunku (best Bundesliga player), and the legendary midfielders Pogba/Kante, and lost Lucas Hernandez.
    So 5 key players at home, 2 pens. Do you just want Lloris to let the ball going in the net to make it fair ?

    Henderson was working the right from very early in the game, it looked a clear decision from the begining to try and exploit the fact mbappe doesnt' track back, with Henderson often the widest player on the right with saka going inside. But he didn't do enough when he was out there, often he'd get the ball just inside the french half with loads of space but no ball down the line because Saka was inside and no option inside as it was cut out by rabiot (I'd love to see henderson pass map from this position as I think it was pretty ineffective most of the time). This is what gave the french midfield so much control in the first half, especially on the break, with henderson often out of position. It left bellingham and rice 2v3 and allowed greizman so much time he was able to run the game, he was comfortably the best player on the pitch, whilst bellingham wasn't able to have the same impact on the game as previously since we didn't control midfield enabling him to get forward as effectively. Also seeing henderson sprint out of midefield to press the centrebacks when the other english players weren't ready, in a position to, or expecting to press and seeing France comfortablly pass round him was painful. In the end henderson ran himself into the ground intially trying to make up the width on the right in attack whilst defend in central mid and later with his wild pressing. Really he should be in the team to offer control in the middle of the park as we have better players getting forward and in wide areas.
    Saka got much more successs when staying wide and then going at hernandez from out to in, which he seemed to do more in the second half when england had their best period of the game, suggesting someone told him at half time.
    It's actually one of my main issues with Southgate system. He routinely uses the inside forwards off their oposite flanks (left footers on right and vv), which offers the strength of coming inside in build up play and for shooting, which Saka has done many times, but when we play on the counter it often results in players on their weak foot to make a cross, pass or shot. Really it needs overlapping full backs/wing backs to work well in order to keep that width offering better crossing and to stretch teams (and is also much more effective in posession based systems, which argueablly we don't have, or against teams we're expected to dominate). We have this on the left with Shaw, but not on the right often (particullary with James injured) and especially in this game with Walker sitting in on Mbappe. When Saka inevitably drifts inside it leaves us with little width. Normally Sterling operates off the left coming inside with shaw overlapping. However foden tends to stay wide when off the left, often coming deep to get the ball and so then he and shaw end up in similar spaces.
    Really with that front three yesterday we needed an overlapping full back on the right and left full back inverted when going forward or just sitting in the back three and letting bellingham then run that left inside channel. But if the priority from the begining was to lock up Mbappe with Walker (pretty much the only time he got forward was when we lost posession for the first goal and he was inside the french box) then we should have used a different starting combination of our wide forwards (or different instructions early on). What we ended up doing for too long was sacrificing a centre mid to operate in the wide right where he wasn't as good as a genuine wide mid/winger would be and also weakened our midfield control.

    • @thexkayo
      @thexkayo Pƙed rokem +3

      This would have been the right game for Southgate to implement the 3 or 5 at the back system, it would have allowed England to exploit the right wing because of mbappe not tracking back. A 3 at the back system consisting of Walker playing the right CB role and a wing back of trippier which would have utilized overlapping runs on the outside well. The midfield of Rice, Bellingham and Henderson is okay because it would offer Walker a support of either Henderson and Trippier on that right wing depending on the situation. And offensively Henderson and Trippier attacking Hernandez which I think upon the fact that he wasn't getting any support from mbappe on that wing he is also not convincingly solid defensively. Starting Rashford over foden also would have been fantastic because the wing backs threat delivery crosses into the box occupied by Kane and Rashford would have caused problems. And players like Bellingham and Henderson that likes arriving late in the box would have gotten opportunities as well... I just don't understand the logic of using your midfielder to create an overload on the right when his best qualities isn't when he's on the ball (Henderson). Southgate was not poor but just didn't utilize other possibilities.

    I have a question: When managers change tactics within the same half, how is this normally done? Is it just preparation and code with if a sign comes up a specific thing is done? I want your opinion 'Football made simple' as of how you have come to understand or notice these changes in tactics mid half and how they are communicated to the players from the manager?

      Sometimes the manager can try shouting his commands at the players and whoever hears it can relay the message to the target player, but most commonly this is done by subs coming on with instructions that he will tell his teammates. In this case I'm pretty sure Southgate had talked with the players before about the different options who should stay deep and who should press high. Henderson taking his time to work out how to get in and around Saka made Saka SO isolated early on. Literally playing against 3 men several times in the opening 20 minutes yet people complaining that he kept passing backwards. The fact he had no RB option and Kane was drifting left incessantly meant he had it all to do against Hernandez and Rabiot but he was still arguably England's most influential player. Would have loved to see Southgate switch Bellingham's side to use his pace with Saka rather than Henderson who just had no explosion to cause his over or underlaps to actually cause damage. As it was this was a defensive display by Southgate and it led to us having limited penetration. On the contrast, Foden still looked most dangerous coming inside and it doesn't really utilise that overload on the wing (I guess the idea was the Shaw overlap but it basically didn't happen because he was checking his shoulder for Dembele all game). Missed opportunities and fine margins. Think Kane had a stinker all game to be honest though - it was clear our influence needed to be on this right wing but he basically left Saka to fend for himself most of the time or made selfish runs rather than trying to create the space for Saka. Pissed me right off. The penalty miss I can take - it was the number of times an overlap or underlap would have freed Saka to drive at the defence but Kane instead made himself a target to try and work the space himself. Gotten too used to watching Jesus.

    I love your analysis but watch the game again, France’s strategy was mainly to attack using dembele’s side, mbappe’s side was always used to shift England and then create enough space on the other side to loosen up their defense

    • @nissarpa1259
      @nissarpa1259 Pƙed rokem +3

      You are right in a sense but that tactics were used as a B plan if Mbappe couldn't use his pace to outrun england. If you've noticed the game, most of the english play started from Lukeshaw's left side & not Kyle walkers & that's partly because Mbappe is in the right side waiting for a mistake. In hindsight I thought england should have attacked from the middle where France is most vulnerable, their midfield. We just did not attack more from there. If that had happened Kane could have played his link up play more which could've created more space in the french defense & both the wings would've used the width for that crosses in the centre of the box. I always believe every team is vulnerable if a team attacks from the middle of the box or there about. France are just as vulnerable in that area as any other team. But most of the teams are too much worried about one single player.

    I give southgate 3 stars...
    First issue is too think that the only danger in French team is mbappe,and forget the others 10 players.
    Where was mbappe in this game?
    He has done nothing but he follow the instruction,he let the defense focus on him.
    Deschamps is brillant,he had trained his team for that, because he knew that southgate will focus on mbappe and put 2/3 players on him.
    When u put 2 or 3 players to block a player, this players will forget to defend on the others,or defend less on the others.

    I always enjoy these videoes, But it nags me that you don’t cover the tactical aspect of goal creation and the goals in general.
    You covered Englands right Wing in possesion when attacking, which I agree that England had good offensive opportunites, yet you didn’t mention that the exact same position also from Saka, forced a clumsy penalty which led to a goal for England.
    France was VERY disciplined in their defence as every man knew which english player to mark, when they tried to build up. It’s a typical French tactic to go defensive when meeting supposely better teams. They did the same against Denmark in their group match, releasing Mbappe on the Wing for goal opportunites. I feel like against England We saw more english player defending against Mbappe (NOT only Walker, who Mbappe did manage to beat) and even saw Kyle, Saka and Stones attenpting to choke up Mbappe. Ironically still the start of both French goals came from their left hand side, even though the French right look more like they would create better goal opportunites.
    Just my small take on it.

    Were England unlucky to lose? No, but I would say they were definitely unlucky not to take this game to ET.
    Ultimately, this was probably the best performance vs. a "big European team" that we've had under Southgate.
    I was afraid he was going to switch back to a 3-4-3 due to Mbappe's threat but credit to him, England tried to go toe to toe with France and had spells where they were on top. The difference is France took their chances while England simply did not create enough in open play + Kane's costly miss. The only positive to take from this is that at least Southgate seems to have learned from his defeats to Croatia and Italy, where England tried to sit on a lead and essentially gave up all control to a superior midfield which cost them dearly.
    I wonder where England go from there though. Southgate has brought me the best memories I have of cheering for England, and I think he's a decent manager despite what others say, but I don't think he has the in game management to win a final. Sterling coming off a mildly traumatic event and no training should never have been brought on. Saka was causing havoc down the right and should be left on, or at least subbed for the in form Rashford. Plus, surely you have to bring on one of Trippier/Trent in the final moments when you need someone to deliver a good set piece?

    • @charlietran7182
      @charlietran7182 Pƙed rokem

      I think Southgate was weighing on the risk of exposing the wings to the duo Dembele & Mbappe hence he decided to keep Walker & Shaw on the field. TAA is a good crosser but his defensive skill has been terrible lately so it will be devastating to expose that wing to Mbappe to exploit.
