Musiala is the best U21 talent in the world, without any doubt. How he danced through Spains midfield and defenders several times was simply amazing - while he was even defending himself as well when he had to... what a player! I can't wait for Wirtz (who is also only 19 years young and on the same level of talent) getting 100% fit again and playing beside of Musiala (plus Paul Wanner for the next year as well; who is just 16 now). And the double 6 with Kimmich + Goretzka is simply worldclass. Germanys BIG problem for now is the defence, where only Rüdiger makes an S-Tier defender. Schlotterbeck has a lot of talent but still makes mistakes - just like Raum as a LB. And they have no real right back, only semi-good solutions for that position. Germany is the current U21 Euro Champion and the German U21 / U19 / U18 / U17 teams really got the highest dense of top-notch talents Germany had for decades. So for the Euro 2024 there will be a new central striker, new defenders etc. and a much stronger German team - but for NOW Füllkrug is the best option as a 9 and they have to stick with the thrown together defence.
Spain has basically the perfect mix of young and older players. Pretty similar to the German World Cup winning team of 2014. Their only disadvantage compared to England is that they have also no real S-Tier striker like Kane. Yes, Morata is a great player and their whole offensive players are good - but a top-notch 9 is not there. Their whole play style lives through the midfield, Pedri and Gavis ideas and then the creation of 3 different offensive players. Busquets is 34 but that dude is reading the opposite team like a book. He is like an Einstein of football. Spain has modernized their game, the Tiki-Taka is much faster and more dynamic than it was 7-8 years ago and worldclass talents and gamemakers like Pedri and Gavi are making it very hard for the opposite team to read their game. These two are different to Musiala or Wirtz - they don't score a lot and they're also not making that much assists, but they are CREATING the WHOLE game of Spain. It's insanely cool to see how much effect two talents can have on a team without scoring 10 goals per season (which is applicable to Barcelona as well).
That was def. an absolute great game of both teams. Highest level of football - even during the fact that the result of 1:1 was not that amazing.

  • @himiguja7857
    @himiguja7857 Před rokem +75

I think Germany needs to play Goretzka next to Kimmich if they want to have control of the midfield, when playing with a double pivot. Gündogan doesnt offer enough control to make up for his lapses in defensive awareness, when used as a holding midfielder/destroyer. I think he perfoms better, the higher up the pitch he plays for Germany. Goretzka might not be perfect in that regard, but he has the physicality to win 1 v 1 duels and be a presence in midfield. My ideal formation would be Füllkrug as a focal point up top, then all the Bayern players around him, maybe leave one of Müller and Gnabry out instead of Gündogan/Havertz and play Musiala on the left.

Thank you very much! Great analysis! My best team after that game would be: Neuer - Raum, Rüdiger, Süle, Klostermann - Goretzka, Kimmich - Musiala, Sané, Müller/Gnabry - Füllkrug. For me our biggest problem was the number of mistakes made against Oman (friendly match) and Japan in possesion. And when i compare Gündogan and Goretzka, Gündogan while being more creative, he also makes more mistakes especially when passing under pressure. Goretzka on position 6 is harder to push into mistakes, he is physically stronger and also it's an advantage to have that team of Bayern players on the pitch, who know eachother so well. When Raum was very offensive, Kehrer should've played more save and defensive. I don't think, he is playing his best football right now. That's why i prefer Klostermann. Same with Gnabry: awesome player, but he doesn't stand out right now, like he usually does. I liked your germany analysis. What I told my friends most likely is Germanys gameplan is keep the game level until the 70th minute and Sané can get on. He‘s still injured and couldn’t play for much longer than that. You said we need to start him, we would love to, but it was to early.
Germany had the worst luck with the order of the schedule in the entire tournament. 1st must game win against a good team, no chance to acclimate, 2nd Spain game with people still injured and now 3rd Costa Rica.
I would get Gündogan out of this team in a heartbeat. I hated his Spain performance. He needed 4-5 touches everything to get the ball under control and play the next pass. Meanwhile Dani Olmo gets a 50 yard long ball, takes one touch and is ready to distribute. I didn’t think this was possible for a captain of Peps Manchester City, but he completely took the edge out of all our attacks. Goretzka is an insane physical presence and mismatch for everybody when he gets into the final third, we all know that, but he is better at receiving the ball and keeping the passing speed high than Gündogan. So for me it’s no real debate who should play. It’s Füllkrug plus all those Bayern Players, who suddenly are alive as soon as Sané comes on. He makes all the difference, as he always dicates the speed in the offensive third and you saw that against Spain.
My only concern is the rest of the Germany team suddenly not being able to play the simplest passes because there is so much happening. It was so weird. I sat in front of the TV, saw those passing structures Bayern always use and was able to pinpoint players who were confused and in the wrong place. I sad „no Kehrer two meters more up and wide“ and that’s exactly where the pass came and Kehrer lost possession because of wrong positioning. My friends all thought I was a psychic lol. Süle was still able to play that way, I liked that a lot so I might even want him on RB for this reason alone. We play through the RB a lot and if they don’t understand the passes there is gonna be a big hole. Anyway if we make it through the group and Sané + Musiala can play all 90s I genuinely think we can win this WC

Well you did a great job analyzing both teams. From the comments irks me that I still haven't watched the game.
Now as for your midfield setup well this is my take.
    Option 1 (Play both):
When Flick made the switch through his substitutions to project a traditional team, it reminded me of his 2020 Bayern side. He can mirror the same. Goretzka (destroyer who was also tasked with moving up to press, in the same vain, Khedira subtly did the same for J.Loew side post 2014 WC), Kimmich as a FB with the dual role of traditional and inverted positions, and Thiago (Gundogan will become the deep creator).
Option 2(Drop Gundogan: The eyes of the bench)
In this option Kimmich playing ahead of Gundogan isn't because of he's better, but it'd be interesting for a creative tactical switch midgame. Pep does the same with him, because he has the ability to read the room(opponent) and in that moment of uncertainty, a metronome arrives on the pitch who has first hand information on where the weak link is.
    Option 3(Play Goretzka wide in a 442)
With this option, the team can shift into a lopsided 433, a 4231 with either fullback making up the front 5.
    Option 4(Switch to a back 3)
Both players will be pivots and the usual thing to do is to drop one or both wingers to support the pivot when overloaded but I'd like to try something different.
When with possession (having progressed the ball with the default shape) in the opponents half, one wingback (Goretzka, if he's willing) will be tasked with conventional duties as well as tucking inside. Now the wide CB will be tasked with overlapping on the wings. (T.Kehrer should be able to play in this role)
This inevitably puts the side in a 235 shape. If they lose the ball they are in close proximity to press, the catch here is Goretzka is central enough to be a pressing demon that he is.
Also depending on the opponents shape Kimmich might have to drop into CB as sweeper or Wide CB, or remain as single pivot. Like I said depending on the opponent.
These are my solutions to your question.

The only good sub was Morata which rendered the goal.

These guys like pedri and Gavi have that childish fearless and fiesty nature to dare to take on a player. You are right about Dani olmo, ferran torress and asensio disappointing in that aspect of their which is something they were go at at one point.
As for my German midfield in a 4-2-3-1, I will start goretzka and kimmich in the pivot with freedom to forward and contribute to the attack as long as one of them is observing the backline. That means the have to communicate a lot. My classic 10 would be musiala with freedom to roam round the pitch and get himself open for combo plays with wingers and fullbacks like odergaard in arsenal. That should be enough.

Müller started against Spain and wasn't very effective nor very present f we're being honest, but he's such a high quality player that it almost hurts to leave him out. But then again you could replace him with either Havertz or Brandt who both would be more involved in the build up play and would speed up their attack. I feel like Havertz could be an interesting option for the left side as he's left footed and could provide crosses for Füllkrug as well as stretch the attack for germany to create space in the middle. And Musiala seems to drift inside more often than not anyway. Flick has certainly a lot to choose from

9:23 I think it is not tough at all. Sometimes football is dead simple. Every team had a short preparation phase for this tournament, much shorter than usual. The football god smiled at Germany and gave them a 5 men midfield block playing at Bayern Munich at the highest level. With Mane and Müller out with injuries you had Kimmich-Goretzka - Sane-Musiala-Gnabry playing the last few Bundesliga games. As a coach just take that gift and put it into your team. These guys have bonded over many months/years and they are all top notch.
How many other teams dream about such a situation?
Forward of the midfield let Füllkrug play (especially against Costa Rica) as you need somebody who can just put it away.

  • @studiofurbewegung-phoenix-421

Interesting not to mention, that spain were just able to score a goal after they bring a 9. Morata. So they could take the open side and flank to him. So Germany had the problem this one time, closing the side. Also don´t forget how müller organized the german front. even he doesn´t scored, he was talking to his mates all the time. BUT, at the end they needed more power and so sane and füllkrug kicked in. Another little thing, in the first half all three german midfielders more or less were in the role of a 6. they were defensive. it was more a 4-3-2-1. With the 2 offensive on the outside and müller loose 9.

A comment on Spain's analysis: Players like Ansu Fati and Carlos Soler could have made the difference Nico Williams and Koke couldn't do. I'm sure Luis Enrique thought those changes he did were his best options, but at least he should have tried Fati for 20 minutes. Nico was added to open the team but he's not a menacing goalscoring threat, in Athletic Bilbao he's more a provider than a scorer. Ansu Fati is a more consistent scorer, and should have been deployed replacing Ferrán.
On the other side, Carlos Soler is a great 2nd line threat, he comes from behind, goes very well at aerial balls and has a good ranged shot. I would have replaced Gavi with Soler and Busquets with Koke, forming a 4-2-3-1 with Koke and Pedri in the pivot line, Soler slotted in number 10, Fati on the left, Olmo on the right and Morata (those last 3 are very exchangeable as well, giving the attack some mobility and unpredictability) up top. You keep fresh legs, have more threat going up and can both press high or drop deep. We all know Busquets is not a good option to drop deep as he's not a fast tracking defender who can cover large areas using speed, he's more sioted to intercept difficult passes made by ball handlers that are rushed by his team mates.

The high possession of Spain wasnt low risk. In fact the will to keep the ball whatever position they are in, made them play risky short passes inside the own box.
This game showed the importance of a real 9. A real 9 is used to score goals since youth teams, otherwise he wouldnt make it to the pros. A false 9 and offensive wingers never had to score goals to prove themselves, so they dont have the last will to score a goal against defensive teams and in important matches.

Agreed on the quality of the game (which surprised me, because i would not have though Germany has what it takes to show, what they showed in the second half-you know as a team) Also agreed on Sane, but the question is whether his knee will hold. And finally agreed on the striker position and why Flick seemed so hesitant here i everybodies guess, but it might have something to do with the story how and why Fullkrug is indeed in the team - because he wasnt the first option, not even the second.
Where i disagree is Musiala. Yes the guy is gifted with the ball on his foot, but also often lacks that last glimpse to see the best passing option (hence that one situation where he gave away the 100% second goal for Germany bby not seeing Fullkrug in the middle rdy for a tap-in)
Which leads to one more tactical option Germany has in Mario Götze, who evolved to a full grown, distance eating pressing machine of a central midfielder in Eindhoven and basically can be given the ball at any point and in any situation and will do somthing constructive with it.The guy is one of the best "team-player"midfielders in the german league atm and the biggest reason for Frankfurts two fast attackers (Muani + Lindstrom) being able to shine the way they do.

On the final question regarding Kimmich, Gundogan and Goretzka.
I would say the best combination will be to start Kimmich and Gundogan as your two CDMs. Against Japan, Gundogan was absolutely brilliant in controlling the game and being the link between the forwards and defenders. Germany lost the game to Japan when Goretzka came on and the controlling position was lost. Against Spain it is a different story. You can't really compare Spain and Japan's styles of play. Goretzka was the better option in midfield than Gundogan as Germany was never going to have that controlling play. Spain was always going to have more of the ball so an attacking minded player such as Goretzka worked. Playing Gundogan up front though, was a mistake. He looked very out of shape.
Taking all this into consideration for the game against Costa Rica, I would say Flick has to go back to a combination of Kimmich and Gundogan to control from the midfield and then start Sane and Musiala together with Fulkurg up front. Maybe later in the match, Sane can be subbed for Goretzka who then can still provide that offensive shape to the side to put the game to bed. Do not write off this German side just yet for this world cup. When they hit their stride with the amount of talent in this team, they will be hard to stop

  • @Jestan12345
    @Jestan12345 Před rokem

In my opinion: Gundogan didn't really worked well off the ball (didn't make real runs just slower ones). So i would leave Gundogan out of the midfield for now. Musiala has to play as a 10, thats where he shines. That leaves the question about Muller, who in my mind plays really well and is a huge impact player vocally aswell. So i would at least against Costa Rica, play a 3-5-2
    Neuer
    Rudiger - Sule - Kehrer
    Kimmich - Goretzka
    Sane - Musiala - Gnabry
    Müller - Fullkrug
You can still send out Havertz in any of the 5 front positions. Adeyemi can play on both winger sides aswell and with Mokouko you have a nice bonus option in the front. Gundogan can come in as a super sub past 65 minutes for extra pressure in the midfield.

I think comparing germany and bayern performances is wrong in my opinion.Germany use hansi flick preferred positional play whereas naglesmann is more dynamic coach than flick.Bayern tactically plays in transition more like redbull style coz players are lot closer and tempo of game is faster at bayern.I think redbull style can bring the best out of Germany players as it is suited more to their current talent pool. Also people say fulkrug should start for them surely he provides something different in profile that germany dont have but if he plays Germany lost control in dictating tempo even when spain were quite conservative after the lead.Imo he should be used as super sub if they want a cf to start I would prefer moukoko over fulkrug.Your opinion on my analysis bro?

Also on your question I prefer goretzka over gundogan.I like these midfielder provides bite and muscle.goretzka gives more of bayern power and raw challenges ik midfield with gundo their midfield is too light

In attack flick had the wrong starting 11 noth wc mactches so far...havertz and müller were both not support to start at st, füllkrug and moukoko were both taken to the wc as strikers and everyone here was surprised both times, we should really start either of them from now on

World Cup is totally different ball game and tactics compared to Europe league games, or even South American style. Hard part is you have to figure this out quickly while the world cup is going on, otherwise next thing you know you are already on the plane.

Flick has to drop Gundogan and Play a pivot of Kimmich-Goretzka with a Sane-Musiala-Gnabry-Füllkrug front 4.

Wow this aged really fast 🤣 Seriously, do you think the Spain vs Morocco match is the breaking point that marks the end of possession football? It looks like the method is not working any more.

The key here is that Spain not only didnt need to win but it was better not to. In fact, if I was then I would losee the last match so that they go second and have an easier path. Spain is the best team in this worldcup.

In theory I agree with you. In practice losing on purpose would be considered match fixing, and it's also very bad for team morale.

Germany turned this game around, if it went on another 10 minutes they probably would have won it.

Is Müller, Kimmich, Neuer essential to success?… The answer may be: It was. But everyone gets older, and some do harder to adapt.
Neuer changed the role of the goalie forever, however, some long precise balls (like Boaten did in the past) could have eliminated a lot of Spanish players between the ball and the goal… and with less players, the speed advantages of Sane, Gnabry and (a less selfish) Musiala, will force Spain to play more defensive or be vulnerable for counter
