- Spain are, in my opinion, one of the most interesting teams in this 2022 World Cup. But could they really go all the way?
With such a unique system and coaching philosophy, they’re well worth a deep tactical analysis… and that’s exactly what you’ll find in this video! We’ll look at their tactics in and out of possession, and discuss what problems they might face in Qatar.
I hope you enjoy, and subscribe for more of this as the World Cup goes on :)

Watching this video after spain's elimination makes this video 100 times better. You can really see the level of understanding of football you have. You almost nailed the numbers, but sadly penalty kicks aren not a strong point either.
I just want to see Ferran Torres and Alejandro Balde to thrive. Also maybe you could do game reviews on games like Argentina-Saudi Arabia, those would be super fun to watch.
100% spot on , that's exactly what happened against Morocco, and Morocco knew exactly how to counter their strategy
This Spanish team is so good, but the 2008-2012 was the best ever in football history maybe
I beg to differ. both Brazil´s 70 and 80 teams were better techinically speaking.

exactly! idk why why people see spain as some sort of underdog when any of their 11 players would be one of the most technically brilliant of any other nation
I guess because some are still young. But most of them play in big teams.
@@alvarombd8231 this is true, they do not have the experience of the early 2010's squad. talent is certainly not lacking though
That's the problem with them tho, they are just not good enough mentaly it seems. Morata can not handle big games and that lack of a great finisher I think will be a big problem for them deep in the compition
Spain were a lot better than Italy in the semifinal and were in fact the best team in the tournament.
This shows the reason why enrique picked ansu, who is struggling at the club. X-factor and the clinical edge that ansu brings is unparalleled. If he is firing on all cylinders there aren't many better than him at what he does.

The British always overestimate their team and underestimate others. This youtube went full Gary Neville.
This WC comes a bit early for Spain but in 2026 they are my top favourites.
7-0 vs Costa Rica.. people really sleeping on Spain.. if they are clinical for the rest of the tournament I don’t see anyone giving them an even game..
From a Spanish tactics nerd, congrats on your analysis. This is, indeed, a really interesting team even for us, nowadays we dont have the big names that we used to have (aside from some really promising stars that can already deliver) but we have a lot of players who fit really good in our philosophy and style, which could make Spain overperform thanks to the tactics.

ELIMINATED 😆👍
Seeing this thumbnail after Morocco's humiliation fills me with joy
Harry Kane, in this Lucho setup, would be Balon D'or level. This video explains why if Harry Kane is to leave Spurs, he should not go to any team in the PL. He was perfect for City and probably, City as a team would have been better with Kane as CF than Haaland. But now City have Haaland, so there's only 1 team in the world that would maximize his ability and truly make him a top 3 player in the world- Football Club Barcelona. He has world class tactical smartness, technical ability, strength and on top of that, he is a top 3 - top 5 finisher in the world who consistently beats his Xg by a huge margin. His contract is up in '24. He would be 30 years old with another 4-5 years at the highest level. He does not command Lewy level wages (reportedly on 200k a week at Spurs). If spurs cannot renew him, I really hope Barca get him.
Not bad att all ☹👍
Harry Kane will be one of the players that will never win any international title, neither with Tottenham nor with England....like Ballack the german player.
Good analysis! Since David Villa, Spain has been lacking a good striker. As you mention in the video, the Spanish game is getting more predictable and there is a problem because they don't leave room for improvising and changing tactics.
Spain’s secret is that it plays like a spanish football club, while other nations just play more primitive football (mostly). Add advanced passing and technique and this time is a contender.
Bingo! That's exactly what I have been explaining to all my friends in recent days. All teams in the world cup, other than Spain, just use what athleticism and/or individual talent they have in order to win. It's only the Spanish that actually try and play based on a blueprint and rational calculation.
I disagree, Brazilian coach (tite) is a coach that led a brazilian club (Corinthians) to win in a very tatical manner against Chelsea in the international club final, Where Chelsea had more quality in all areas of the field, he did a very solid defensive strategy and managed to pull out a victory. He's the most technical and tatical coach in Brazil and have been doing some amazing work since he joined, with many different strategies in the SA qualifiers, ultimately it resulted in a unbeaten streak for Brazil, with some draws because of his "defensive" approach, i think that if he was a little bit more brave Brazil could've had a perfect run with 100% win streak. I think his only weakness is to be way too slow to recognize a problem during the games but so far in this wc he's being doing fine with the in game player changes
Well, the german squad has been made up of mostly FC Bayern München players for a decade or so

And Yeremy Pino. Two players that can change the game off the bench.
Spain have a clear system of play and dominate all of their opponents with possession and passing.. Great analysis
I'd go as far to say they are the best coached team at world cup...if they had an elite level no.9 say a Lewa Benzema they'd be unstoppable.. they have a great core of youngsters who even if they don't win this world cup they'll have more in 4 yrs time...Vamos Espana🇪🇦💪

😂😂😂😂😂I do not know why people are obsessed with number 9s😂😂😂😂😂😂
It's been so long since No9 are overrated in modern football. it's not coincidence that the best 2 scorers of the last 15 years are two wingers that play opposite leg in the pitch. Just think about that.
Yes, there will always be a great number nine around, like Luis Suárez, or Haaland, but still players like Mbappe are the showrunners in today's game.
And btw, Benzema is not a classical 9. He's more like Asensio, a false 9 with goalscoring technique that is associative and can both shoot and pass. His only real No9 attribute is that he's quite the opportunistic striker, his positioning is masterclass. But he doesn't play holdup football and he doesn't do diagonal runs to look 1v1 vs the keeprs. He likes to trinagulate and make short strings of passes to occupy space, like a false nine or number 10.
Kkk🤣🤣 it certainly did age well... everything I said about them happened in the match against Costa Rica...I love Spain whether they play with cf or false 9...they play with a very clear style of play tht is about dominance... Vamos Espana 🇪🇦💪
Man City now have nr9 they are better than last session. Its always good for a team to have one nr9. They garanti you goal, you score more goals for shore.
I love your tactical analysis‘ keep ‘me up!
X factor...Ansu Fati and Nico Williams. I am from Spain and i think your análisis is very accurate. We have great midfielders but lack top scorers. I think we,ll get to quarter final and against brazil...anything can happens, but Brazil would be the favorite in that hipotetical match.
7 - 0 first game brother. They were so satisfying to watch.
Thanks for this very interesting analysis. It's an easy mistake to make, but just to clear up, Spain's coach's surname is not Enrique, it is Martínez García: Luís Enrique is a compound forename, something very common in Spain, a bit like Billy Ray or Mary Lou. In short, he is always known as Luís Enrique, never as only one or the other.
Good man ! I am impressed with your tactical analysis - i get confused with this stuff and am enjoying your work - thx :)
watching Pedri and Gavi play is fun
"Can Spain win the world cup?"
Morroco: And I took that personally
Thanks for this! Was waiting for a long time, refreshing your accounts. Just in time for the game later.
Watched twice already and I can't help but think that LE will resort to partially vertical, direct football ala MSN Barcelona to counter good defensive formations BUT you would be correct to say the current front 3 of Spain is no MSN and that there is doubt whether they can deliver. Hope they step-up and have a really good run.
Same playstyle for two decades in all national team categories, wait for the right players in the right moment (imagine if Haland was spaniard) a bit luck and done, you won a world cup.
And waiting for more 😍Vamos Españita
Love to all football fans
This analysis gained even more credibility after the failure against Morocco. Great stuff!
I think you are right. The team that won in 2010 was more talented in all areas, but they seemed almost dependent on David Via to give them a cutting edge. I dont see that team winning without his contribution. Nobody in this team is as clinical.
Maybe to win Spain need something special from Morata or somebody. Or else they could just squeeze through with a lot of low scoring games.
It would also be interesting if they have to play France. Spain cant really change their game plan but Mbappe could expose them with his incredible pace.
That’s if France gets to have the ball tho. Spain’s way is to defend with the ball not without it like most other teams which is what so many people seem to not understand. Spain doesn’t need the biggest defenders to be successful they are more than fine like they are atm at least in my opinion!
The 2010 team also had Players like Xavi and Iniesta. Like, everyone can implement this system, but those two were able to do some of the greatest passes.
And they had Ramos and Puyol to win the long balls (idt there anything more say about those).
This system is a good framework but strong CB's and 2 of the smartest brains football ground has ever seen was the reason they did soo well.
And when Messi became the X-factor in Barcelona national team of that time... We know what happened
The Italy that won it all in 2006 had no players with more than 3 goals. It was the perfect team effort what made the champions.
This team can win, and if they lose I don't think it will be solely attributed to the lack of quality in attack, that's for sure.
@@david9243 Facts!

Maybe we can do it again (except we have scored already 7, so we have to be very smart about when to score the 8th and last)

olmo, pino, williams, fati are pretty cutting edge if u ask me
really funny seeing people saying this video aged like milk when it actually almost nailed what happened on the match against Morroco: they could get there and had more posession but just couldn't find a goal.
The problem is they couldn't even get there they only had 10 chances and only one on target in 2h that's just horrendous.
cuz they assumed the answer of the title would be a yea in this video but they never watched the video 😂

Today Spain was a different beast against Costa ricaa. I really didn’t expect them to play soo well🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🇪🇸❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Interesting how this geometrical and control focused game reminds one of Spain's martial tradition in rapier fencing, the "verdadera destreza". Thanks for the great video and channel!
Good breakdown, cheers
watching this after seeing spain crash costa rica 7-0, had the same doubts as you but everyone proved to be clinical in front of a quality keeper (navas)
Navas used to be top tier and as a Real Madrid fan I love him, but he had played a total 0 games this season. And Costa Rica squad has a total market value of 18~ million which is about the value of a low tier- second spanish division team. Being spanish myself I think France or Brazil are looking stronger despite the 7-0. But we'll see, Spain is obviously one of the contenders.

Awesome analysis! Just a tip:
4:52 "Enrique" is not his last name. He has 2 names: Luis (Louis) and Enrique (Henry). It is very typical for Spanish people to have 2 names (or more, in rare occasions). We also have 2 last names: our father's and our mother's.
So, Luis Enrique Martínez García is "Louis Henry ".
Then, why is his 1st surname is 'Martínez' if his father is Amunike?
I want to point out that those family names are so common in Spain that "Luis Enrique" is better for identification than "Luis Martínez".

I don't think Spain are predictable at all. Especially in their attack without a prominent striker. I think this is going to allow them to have the element of surprise but that's just me

Spain has two very tricky wingers coming off the bench; Nico Williams and Yeremy Pino. Very dangerous change of pace the last half hour of games.
I'm amazed how much these principles match those that I think about when playing and discussing floorball. :)
Can you do a breakdown video of some of the more concepts that you are using. Inverted pivot, width, "#10" man. I think the quality of your videos would benefit from a couple primer videos. This was an excellent video Purist Football. I feel this World Cup will be great experience for Pedri, Gavi, Ansu, Balde and Ferran and they will more experience and maturity to become a favourite for 2026.
But currently unfortunately yes they lack unpredictability in Final 1/3rd, content with shifting side to side and retaining possession without the final decisive pass or dynamic dribbling to break down a defence. At times CF Morata and wingers with Ferran and Sarabia will still score goals but can see in tight games they struggle to take advantage of opportunities. I hope Dani Olmo and Ansu can help in that area however Ansu will need to be more clinical with his chances.
I'm hopeful that they make quarters/semis. They'll probably come 2nd in group behind Germany but show a lot of promise. Let's see how the first game against Japan goes

Behind Germany you say?
between this comment and the video thumbnail saying "secretly brilliant"... What a joke, if you've seen any Spain game of the past few years they are far ahead of ANY opponent when it comes to control and possession, all they lacked was goalscoring. If they've fixed that, they are a clear favorite... get out of here with "secretly" brilliant lol.
I'm hoping Spain will take France down, they might come against Brazil, and if the formation is broken, they're not gonna know what to do.

I am Spanish and I completely agree with your reasoning. Few options to win the championship for Spain
Bingo you're right.
I agree on the lack of dribblers up front, so imagine starting Nico and Balde on the left :O
Is not a secret that Luis Enrique is brilliant. The best coach of the entire world cup. The only one I’d consider at his level is Flick. Those two are on a different league.
Ur absolutely spot on. Spain can sometimes be too predictable and teams can sometimes block off their passing lanes.. so they need players who are very lethal in the final third area and can also take on opponents and dribble pass 2 or 3 players for the team to be extremely successful... as pep guardiolo use to say, the coach job is to get them till the final third, and the players job is to finish them.
Tactical oriented analysis
You make a bold prediction of a team and they give us a reason to doubt them the next game. It's almost as if your jinxing them
Jugadores que son un 8,pero en conjunto hacen un 10,no necesitan jugar para uno, todos juegan para todos.
Very fair analysis.....iam Spanish & agree, a point of difference in the attacking 1/3 like Fernando Torres/David Villa is what is required for Spain to be winning this World Cup.....I suspect they'll be ready to show their best in the next Euro & World Cup.....they could go deep in this one but others will prove to have an edge
Superb analysis brother! But I'd not go as far to say that Spain is brilliant. What we have is a very unique team and a unique coach- strictly following a philosophy and systemic approach to everything. As you said the team would become more predictable as the tournament goes further. I always get disappointed in Spain's performance in the final third. What spain needs is a #9 like Fernando Torres who can do the unexpected. But it's no way we're going to get. I expect Ferran to be more clinical this WC. I also think corner kicks are not going to be useful. Let's see how this turns around.
Viva España!🇪🇸
Ravi? From Barcelona? Haresh's brother?
Spain need a david villa
It is evident Spain lacks some TNT upfront. However, I do not agree this is the biggest weakness. Spain's offensive potential comes from associativity, speedness with the ball and unpredictablity with the 2nd last and the last pass. I think the team has 2 problems that are more significant. First of all, its incapacity to have a Plan B in case the other team's press is too tight and effective, and its defensive softness when facing strong teams.
Of course they can. They've been among the top five in the bookmakers since Russia 2018.
I see this team winning the WC, it´s strong and efficient

The X factor isn't there but their link-up can overrirde the need for it... they put players in scoring positions very often. The main problem is they don't have a killer in front of goal. Morata and Ferrán are serial missers, and Dani Olmo, while more unpredictable, isn't a 30 goals-a-season guy either. If this team had a David Villa then they'd be favorites to win it.

I was looking at Germany's track record against Spain ⚽. It struck me that Germany has found it hard to win against Spain in recent times. I wonder what can be the reason(s)? 🤔
Because from 08 till like 13 Spain were untouchable
@@realife1542 The most recent match between Spain and Germany was a 6-0 demolition in 2020.
well.. Here I am with the lineups released and Rodri is playing as a Centre Back instead of a Defensive Midfielder
The system and skeleton of Spain are very similar to Barca's, but the different front three would produce a very different end-result.
What made Barca huge success in the past was the top quality of their front three, like MSN; Ronaldinho alongside Henry and Eto'o; Messi alongside David Villa and Pedro, with midfielders like Iniesta, Xavi and Deco who were able to assist and score, but clearly Spain has no such skillful players now.
I disagree in part, Spain 2008-2012 had the same skeleton as Barça as well but the front 3 only preserved Villa. Yes, Torres was also a magnificent player and Pedro played quite a lot, but they certainly don’t compare with Ronaldinho, Eto’o, Henry, and of course Messi. Yet Spain was able to dominate
@@oscaar_3985 I didn't say Torres was good or magnificent and didn't say Pedro could compare with Ronaldinho and etc.. I just listed out some front-three combinations of Barca in the past.
You would rather think whether the current Spain players can compare with the above legends of Barca in terms of efficiency, pivot, control of rhythm, shot on target, finishing, assists, posing threats and etc..
Though Spain tended to be predictable and "safe in possession" along tiki-taka times - this Spain of Luis Enrique follows some patterns but introduces changes to that style (as he did to Barca after Guardiola & Tata Martino). Still for controlling the ball, Luis Enrique's system pursues attacking more the spaces; more quick transitions; more 1v1s; and, moving more people to the front (at risk of "territorial dominance"). Overall, they're more vertical. Eurocup was a good example of it.
