Morocco have defied all expectations by making it to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. So as the first ever African nation to make it this far, I had to take an in-depth look at their unique tactical setup.
Have their performances merited their success in the competition? And more importantly, can they go even further?

Morocco's display in this workd cup was far beyond heroic and they are now part of the world's football legacy forever. Their defending was remarkable in every sense of the word, their physical display all over the pitch, pressing when needed, retracting when not, controlling pace, accelerating, slowing down as required, never backing up, never disparing, not even 2 down against france. They were fantastic! And their collective spirit, unbreakable. We have seen tremendous squads throughout history, but this moroccan squad was, is and will be special. For us the rest outside the elite, they are an inspiration and a case study. In mexico we always said in the past that our national team played with their heart, but now i see that was never the case, not like this moroccan heart.

Consider this... There were 8 Groups of four team at the beginning... So far, 28 countries have been eliminated and we got four semi-finalists left... Five of those Groups (A, B, E, G and H) didn't QUALIFY A SINGLE TEAM TO THE SEMIFINALS... From those 5 Groups, were eliminated strong teams as Netherlands, England, Spain, Brazil, Germany, Denmark, Belgium, and Portugal, to name only a few. THEY ARE OUT, beaten by better team that particular day... Two groups produced one team to the semifinals (GROUP C, Argentina, and GROUP D, France). And only one Group, GROUP F, qualified TWO teams in semifinals, Morocco and Croatia... ON TOP of that, Morocco WON that strong group which also included Belgium, the second ranked team, according to FIFA experts... Morocco WON that strong group without losing a single match, and without letting any opposition players to score against them... The only goal against was an own goal, against Canada... Morocco is the only team son far that HAS NOT BEING BEATEN... Its campaign so far is five matches: four victories and a draw against one of the other semi-finalist, Croatia... All the other teams have been beaten in one ocassion, only Morocco remains unbeaten... The so called “experts” have been telling us that Croatians, Belgium, Canadians, Spaniards and Portuguese were going to defeat the Atlas Lions... And if Morocco is going to lose any of the two remaining matches, they are still the winners... They have the love, the support, the admiration of the world... In every corner of the world people have emerged fans who are supporting then... Because they play nice, clean and fair... And they are good Sports... Good luck, dear brothers!

Bounou and a fair dose of luck. Portugal had 7-8 big chances of which normally they'd convert at least 3. Hit the bar as well.
But I guess any team needs some luck to progress to the latter stages. People tend to forget that Spain won penalty series on their way to both their 2010 and 2012 titles. Italy won on penalties in 2006. Portugal in 2016 needed extra time against Croatia and France and beat Poland on penalties
For the 2018 WC Croatia finished second in their qualifying group behind Iceland and had to play an extra qualifying match. During their WC prep they lost 2-0 to both Peru and Brazil. During the knock-out stages they progressed twice on penalties and needed ET to beat England.

Strats and tacts aside. This team seems to be the only one with players that have understood a key thing. That every match in the tournament could be their last. That this is it for them. This is the moment where they have to leave everything on the pitch so even if they lose, they know they tried their very best. That there's nothing more important in their professional football career that these matches that they're playing right now. There's no energy saving. There's no playing soft thinking in the future. If they feel tired, they'd head down and keep going. No excuses.
Is there any other team in the WC with players that have shown such sacrifice?
And some may argue that some things come down to "luck". But what's even that? A sort of cosmic force? A power people can channel after doing certain things? No. Luck's just an excuse. It doesn't exist. What exists is coincidence and cause and effect. One event leading to another, creating a sequence which if enough coincide it ends up in an scenario which just so happens to play out in one's favor, in spite of there being no inmediate logical explanation as to why it did play out that way.
But if some people will take credit away from this team for "getting lucky", then they we should do that with everyone of us and everything that we do in our lives. Cause if we are realistic, it doesn't matter how good we become at something, at the end of the day, what we're really doing is to merely reduce the margin of error to the minimum possible. Especially in a game like this, where no matter the pre match training and planification and all that, nothing is ever set in stone. But what is now set in stone, though... is that, "lucky" or not, this Morocco team made history.

There is definitely an element of luck in football. When a single goal makes the difference between 3 points and zero and the consequence of a single loss means going home, the lucky bounce of a ball or a ball that was never going in from a shot ricocheting off a defender into the back of the net, to missing a pen because the grass became unstable all of which could lead to a goal and to a loss. Morocco’s progress in the first half made me afraid of the second half, but I became sure that Morocco knows what it is doing well, unlike Portugal, which decided Playing the match in the white shirt because they think that Morocco is optimistic about the white shirt and wearing the red shirt will make them lose, but Morocco has a goal and focuses on it and does not leave room for luck. ❤❤morocco ❤❤

there's actually a deeper level of analysis here to be had with morocco, there very compact system vertically and laterally actually puts their players in very frustrating positions for opponents. for example, the half space is occupied by the fullbacks, the wingers and amrabat shuffling, this shutting down of the half space is a problem for any positional play modern team, they want to use that space like Pep does and used to. very few wingers attack in the true wide space, most do in the half space, only opposition full backs really go to the widest areas, and when that happens the Moroccan team just shuffles across collectively, denying this space and forcing the opponents back and around, this is what Spain were doing constantly. their formation also denies space to strikers and attacking mids simply due to the congested nature of that area, during the world cup opponent strikers and attacking mids have been moving out of that area to get the ball, for example modric played basically left back agaisnt them and Ramos and Ronaldo ended up in wide positions. so basically Morocco's style negates strikers attacking mids and wingers from the match, or in other words, all the scoring threats of any modern team.

No European pundit that I heard expected Morocco to go farther than the group stages and to see how Morocco has literally inspired and united millions around the world - lovers of football, Africans, Arabs, those in the diaspora and those who love the underdog factor - has been beautiful to see.

Excellent analysis, highlighting the key roles of Amrabat defensively; and Ziyech and Boufal offensively..
Morocco style of football looks defensively as they pretty much all defend on their own half, but -however contradictory it sounds- they do so in an offensive manner: by being compact and put pressure on the ball at the right time (Amrabat), once they get the ball, they can quickly move out and attack through their creative players (Ziyech and Boufal)
I believe a lot of credit has to go to their coach for having this vision and to the players implementing and executing it.
In doing so, Morocco exude a flair, team spirit and pure joy in the game that is quite rare these days, with teams either overdoing it on the possession (Spain), defensive (Netherlands), antics & theatrics (Argentina) or reliance on star players (France).
Therefore, for me they are now the favourites to win the World Cup, and predict a final against Croatia, who has a similar team spirit.

Well said. One thing that distubs me a lot. The netherlands would for instance never had goten a 2-2 results if Argentina played like marocco in a 2-0 lead. It´s such a stupidity to give the initiative to your oponent by falling in positions with your team and just giving them a chance to play like they want in the end of the match. It´s not a brilliance fron the netherlands, it´s stupidy from Argentine to make your oppenent seem better than they have been in the whole match. If you look at the counterattack for marocco against Portugal there even was a good chance of a 2-0 goal because they tried to scoore a second goal. Even if you don´t succeed you still put mental pressure at your opponent, which makes it harder to push, because you see the risks. I would also think that it mentaly makes it a little bit easier for your own defense not having the ball around your penaltyarea all the time. Everyone is afraid of being the one who makes a mistake when all the world has the eyes on your and just therefore a 2 goal lead is not as certain in playof games as it seems. The first goal makes you nervous so instead of wasting time you should go for the third with only small changes and keeping your team compact. Not doing like brazil did either. Brazil should have gone for the second goals, but attackad with 4-5 playing and left players in good positions to protect from a counterattack. If you want to score a second it just stupiduty to have all your team on offensive side of the pitch.

Amrabat has definitely been their best player sitting in between the defensive and miffield line covering the space creative players like to exploit. On the transition is where they can do damage with their progressive midfielders and technical wingers can supply good delivery into the box, and although they don't create alot, nor have a good possession (field tilt)

Amrabat plays the Kante role but with more skill. En-Nesyri playing the Vardy role as a lone striker. Morocco’s team is more skilled.

  • @michaelman9358
    @michaelman9358 Před rokem +6

The "Anti-Spacing" strategy success could be attributed to several of their players came out of the La Liga academy.
I've also noticed that Moroccan's aerial defence is nearly perfect.
    1. They force the opponent to cross from very deep in the pitch and near outside of the flank. Making the cross higher and closer to the keeper.
    2. As the wing defender stretches the attacker deeper into the pitch, the midfielders collapse quickly into the box, heavily outnumber the attacker.
But, one big weakness of the strategy is the top of the box is highly exposed, as seen from Belgium and Spain games, where few of the long sniper shots had couple unlucky bounces. But against France, with top snipers such as Mbappe and Griezeman, this could, and I predict, will be the reason for their defeat.

@anfieldreds5027 four players = Majority of the team??? More players born in Belgium than the Netherlands anyways.
Six of them played in La Liga academies. It doesn't have to be in Spain, La Liga Academies are Jr. Sportings ran by La Liga system (coaches). For Example many La Liga academies are in Japan ran by former Spainish coaches/players.

What you described in terms of their attack is kind of what I feel we Brazilians expect Brazilian players to do. I don't mean defend and give up possession, but trust players to dribble and bravely + creatively bring the ball across the other side, through the lines, find the spaces, etc. Would it be fair to say this is the case? That Brazil's team has instead tried to attack more "positionally"?

I’m not really surprised to see French fried fake team win due two reasons :
Hiring Africans mercenaries players and refugees, France has only two french national players and 9 players are coming from multiple countries,
    Mbappe : Cameroun
    Grizmann : Swiss
    Hernandez : Spanish
Other players : Multiple African countries ( refugees and mercenaries players, Senegal, congo , Cameroun , ivory cost )
Arbiter and fifa were against Morocco they refuse to give them two penalties!
Morocco played better than fake French fries, players were talented and all defensive players weren’t played due injuries otherwise we may see another scenario, Morocco played a genuine game with it native players! Congrats Morocco you were the best team on FIFA G-a-n-g-s-t-e-r-s Cup
