    It's hard to predict. I felt the group stage was more a training exercise than a real competition, just to perfect the execution of the system. Morocco, with nowhere near the tactical prowess as the Dutch, showed exactly how you outplay a team that wants to play football, but also wants to 'walk it into the net'. With 10 defenders. If the Dutch can pull off the same thing, keeping the spaces extremely small, annoying the everloving hell out of Messi, and keeping 1 up top for a quick break, you might have a great (but boring) game on your hands with 1 country passing 800 times consistently looking to part the orange sea, and 1 country comfortable with the other country being in possession.

      Hmm yes this is risky, but Spain is nowhere near Argentina or Brasil. I think the Dutch if they play it right this time, are able to beat Argentina, but the Brazilian team is composed of too many creative players to be beaten by strategy. These tough matches are won by creative players with a good line up. The Dutch are strong but I don't see any of them holding up 90 minute pressure from Brazil, if they just sit and Defend it will be very exhausting, and if they get scored they will have to open up.

      Morocco plays a different tactic. Their defense is more tight but allows little chance to go offensive. Morocco can gamble going into penalty kick out bcuz of d crown. Qatar is an Arab country and all Arabs inc Africans are backing Morocco, filling up the stadium cheering for them. Meanwhile, Netherlands has much fewer crowd (many didn’t bother going bcuz they hate that it’s held in Qatar) compared to Argentina that’s supported by Qatar’s migrant workers and Asians, not to mention 35K Argentinians who flew to Qatar. Spain isn't the team they were back in 2008-2012. They struggled just a year ago with Switzerland. Argentina has already proven that they are more than capable enough to shake a team who has ten men in front of their net (Poland). The Netherlands isn't that big of a deal. A team like Ecuador dominated them in that 1-1 game, they barely had two shots, and 1 of them was on target. So he built from the strengths he did have: world class CBs (VvD, Ake, De Vrij, Timber, D Ligt), one world class midfielder (De Jong) and a half decent striker (Depay). That combined with two wing backs who can cause trouble on the day forces LvG to play this way. One other strength is LvG's tactical awareness, so NL always have a good game plan. They came in second place in the 2010 WC (barely losing to Spain after nearly 120 minutes of a goalless game) and they ended in third place in the 2014 WC (beating Brazil 0-3), just to name a few recent ones. I don't know why we're even seen as a dark horse. We're on a streak of 18 unbeaten matches in a row, we've beaten the FIFA Ranking nr.1 Belgium twice this year, given a masterclass to Poland, made it to the finals of the nations league, have a bunch of internationally acclaimed players, etc. Even artificial intelligence has deemed us the favorites to win the tourney right after Argentina. After the short dip this team has been on the rise again under Koeman and is now really shining under Van Gaal. I think we have a real good chance of winning this World Cup, the best we've had in a long time. Maybe the playstyle isn't flashy but that's because Van Gaal recognizes we have the best defense out of any team. He caters the tactics around that and it has worked out perfectly for us. Everyone and their mom thought the USA was gonna overrun us and they didn't because of the tactical genius that Van Gaal is. Will it be easy to beat any of the remaining teams? No. Is it very possible considering we only have to win 3 matches to become world champion? Yes! This Dutch team is perfectly able to deregulate any team's flow and strangulate them.

    It looked that Van Gaal was sparing his players as much as possible and keep a fit team that can grow into the tournament German Style. Until now there hasn't been a team that was really good enough to switch tactics. He kept the tempo low as long as needed and get used to the climate in the process it seems. Argentina will be the first real test and I am curious to see how the team functions and if they can succeed. If accuracy is better than previous games, the Dutch have quite a chance to win this game, as Argentina seems to struggle a bit. Never underestimate Argentina though, they have enough individual quality to win.

  • @joowsty
    @joowsty Před rokem +2

    there are 2 other reasons why matthijs de ligt isnt playing. one is that he came into this world cup injured and had to recover. and two is that right and left central defender (timber and ake) need to be good wing backs too, cuz they need to take over for blind and dumfries when they are up the pitch (so at that moment they are playing 3-4-3 or 3-3-4 formation instead of 5-3-2). timber and ake have played wing back in their past too, while de ligt struggles a bit as wing back (he admitted that himself too). so i think de ligt will be the substitute for van dijk. btw we also still have de vrij, who is one of the best defenders in italy, so all in all for sure our defense is our strong point, maybe even the best defense in the world at the moment.
    so all in all for the netherlands to become world champion will all depend on the shape of the midfield and specially the attacking players, they are very inconsistent, one day they can play worse then the weakest attack line in all of this world cup and the other day they can play as good as the best. so for us its keeping our fingers crossed that memphis (and the others) will have their good days, cuz on their bad days we dont stand a chance, unless it will be a 0-0 and penalties win.

But I do hope I am completely wrong and Netherlands will win 4-3 after a wonderful game, filled with beautiful moments of Dutch counter football and Messi magic. The thing they do best however is getting the ball back and react upon the fact they need to get forward asap, this makes it easier to be on the ball due to the open spaces and forward runs to pass the ball to and thus relieving a lot of that pressure/stress.

    I think the biggest fear for the Dutch is that they can't concede first. They need the space in turnovers and counters for attacks to work in this system. Once Argentinia scores early and the dutch are forced to play ball it's going to be very difficult for them. I'm expecting a very passive start from LvG. I expect it to be similar in the US game but Argentinië are going to play a lot more compact and therefor exploiting them is going to be very hard. I'm hoping that if the match remains 0-0 until after the 70th minute we'll get to see Luuk de Jong on the pitch. I think it's very likely he'll be subbed on anyway only if the Dutch end up in a 2-0 lead or something he won't play.

    As a Dutch man, I really like your analysis. In The Netherlands there has been a lot of critisism because 'we want to win, but foremost we want attractive football'. Sometimes you can't have both at the same time. The last time we played Argentina, Messi did not score, let's hope that he (and his teammates of course) will not score this time too.

    Not even close. Morocco is the definition of what a black horse is. Netherlands cant be a black horse having made it to world cup finals in the past and being top ten for a long time. They're currently ranked 8 on the Fifa ranking (which is bs in the first place). Morocco finished first place in the group that they shared with the current world cup runner up and the current rank 2 on the Fifa ranking (again, bs). Well, Louis van Gaal was a big fan of 5-3-2 since he started coaching this team. He compared it to Tuchel's Chelsea Champion's league winning teamformation. But he's wants to make a clear distinction between the old game and the new game. The new game where every player has full stamina to run 120 minutes, age of information. The way Netherlands set up their defending corners is pretty lit aswell. They form a snake, they all stay within one line with Virgil leading that line of players, During the corner they position the line into the line of the ball inc from the corner. The player that's gonna head the ball get's protection from the player in his back that prevents any attacker to slip in his back and head it in front of the player. Simple but effective tactics that need team coordination. The Dutch have it, they won't depend on starplayers anymore. There's not a Robin van Persie or Arjen Robben anymore to create something from nothing. Now it's even more TOTAL FOOTBALL, because every player is involved. The only thing is, it's not 4-3-3. But it'll win this world cup.

I think the quality is there, the tactics are there, but as also mentioned in the video; it will come down to individual form, individual mistakes and overall performance. If the Dutch win from Argentina, I predict them going all the way to the final and winning it, going through Brazil in the semi-final and meeting either Portugal or France in the final. Spot on Thomas! I saw this YT analysis after the game, I have to say I agree about passing issues. That really killed off any viable buildup first half and even second half. Even worse was the referree, while I thought he started to ref fair at the start he ended up being so neurotic with the cards giving them both to Arg and Ned like mad.
      Still though, it was an exciting match due to the comeback. I enjoyed the first goal from Arg and the way Ned fought back. GL to Arg now Ned is out. It didn’t have to come to penalties as Ned could have tried to keep the pressure on in extended play. It was the only moment I saw Arg not getting in their play. Penalties seem to be not our thing (like ever 😁).

    I for one, really like this 'new' system. And yes, I rather call it 3 - 2 - 3 -2. In a classic sense it's more 3 - 3 - 2 + 2, but that really messes up the math, so let's call it 3 - 3 - 2 & 2. The last 2 can make it 5 - 3 - 2 on defense and 3- 3- 5 on full offense - as is also in your video. In fact, against the USA two of our goals were from from the &2 players passing the ball to eachother. So I don't get the complaints in my own country, really. Football is a defensive game. That's why nearly every team plays with more defenders and matches often end in 0-0. So our system is a bit more defensive? Well, like I said, it's a defensive game to start with. I don't see the problem!
