Scaloni and his coaching staff prepared this game very, very well. Even though Croacia had more ball possession, they barely had a shot on target for the whole match. Croacia's forwards didn't touch the ball (again outstanding performances by Cuti Romero and Otamendi), and their midfielders never got a clear shot from outside the box. I thought Croacia would mount a comeback on the 2nd half, but the minutes kept going and they got nowhere. Messi talked during the post-game interviews about how they knew about Croacia's midfield tactics, and that they were prepared to exploit the spaces that they left behind. So, yes, outstanding individual actions (Messi and Julian magic) got it done, but for the magic to appear there needs to be a tactical plan, and a group of players that knows how to interpret the game, when to push, and when to stay back. This was Argentina's main strength today -- maybe not only positional strategy, but players inside the pitch that take the right tactical decisions. Example -- Otamendi asking the midfielders to stop going for a through pass on every possession.
Also to consider, Croacia played two games into extra-time. After a while they looked too tired, and unfortunately for them the subs didn't bring anything exciting into play

@@oswaldjames6295 this is a useless stat, our attackers are beyond terrible. krama is an AM playing ST, pasalic is an AM playing RW, petko and livaja are slow and always overplay passes, perisic is also slow and always tries to shoot instead of crossing it in, budimir is a statue (got subbed on only to come off lol). our best attackers are orsic and vlasic, who barely got any game time, and even then they suck, which goes to show just how dire our attacking is.
also the 2 players you mentioned, livaja and vlasic, both play/ed in poor leagues. livaja is top goal scorer in a league where theres really one 1 other team other than dinamo thats half decent, the rest are farmers. and vlasic was joint top goal scorer like 2 years ago, since he joined westham and then torino, hes been pretty much useless, only recently finding his form again for torino as an AM, and not a RW where dalic forces him to play.
fair play to argentina, but dont act like they did anything to prevent our attackers scoring or creating chances, they just genuinely suck and wouldnt start or even play for most teams in this WC. you could see the difference in quality, every single team we played showed more attacking skill than we did, other than canada.

I mean, 3 goals were annulled by the VAR in the Saudi Arabia Game, even before the Saudis had a chance to win it, I think it was mostly psychological, the team started to degrade after that, thinking that it was going to be as all the other WC when Argentina had all the refs against them, also thinking of losing the 36/37 win streak must have weighted a lot. But not to discredit the saudis' manager, he absolutely saw the oportunity and took it, after half-time, he adapted to Argentina's faults and started digging deeper.

Enzo Fernandez was left too much space to find that pass to Alvarez that led to the penalty. Nobody was on him. On the other side, De Paul was free as well. All three Croatian mid were very much in the center of the pitch. Argentina had no trouble building up quickly.

Croatia really did not changed its game mode and Argentina took advantage of this by not making a priority chasing Croatia’s midfielders.

As croatia would have stayed back and not taken the risk of trying to score goals and would have taken it out to penatlies. I have seen penalties given for much less but yes that fall from alvarez was a little too simulated coz his kick on the ball wasn't as strong.. So my 2 cents. The amount of time Messi plays will likely be tied with his official resignation from the National team. His teammates are begging him to stay on. But, that also depends on his club contract. My guess is that if Messi plays club level for two additional years, he will play with Argentina in the next Copa America...If he manages to play club level 3 more years. He could play the next World Cup. That would mark the absolute end of his international career then. And his club career would then likely end within a year of that. Argentina won because it was the first national team that did not underestimate Croatia and its midfield. Argentina decided to base itself more on the counter, which was a great tactical setup, just like France did in the final of the World Cup 2018. And Croatia, as calm and humble as it was for most of the championship, flew into the clouds after Brazil and ironically underestimated the next opponent. Just like they did in the 2018 final against France. Game before the final was a great victory against England. One would think that they will learn from such a hard lesson from 2018. The match against Argentina... The whole bench reacting violently to an irrelevant controversial decision of the referee in 15 minutes of the match. That is a state of egoism. It was just one of many details like that... at this level, the details decide. After the dirty match Netherlands vs Argentina I knew that Croats would fall into that trap and be in a state of egoistic pride. With that approach they lost before the start of the game. Going against the football superpowers with an underestimating and egoistic approach cannot end well for you..

    • @apan990
      @apan990 Pƙed rokem

this is ridiculous, and just outright false. we had no ego nor pride, and never flew into the clouds lol. our issue is lack of offensive quality, which scanoli knew and in which he used to his advantage. our only chance to win the game was to go at argentina, hopefully score and defend for a win or pens, because we knew messi either way would work his magic and score/assist against us. because of this, our midfield had to create all the chances because our attackers are beyond terrible, and in doing so left us exposed to the counter which they then scored from. not to mention every ball that rebound off us led to a chance or goal for argentina, whereas on the other side nothing, it simply wasnt our day and the better team won.
no need to be toxic and act like we had some sort of ego lol, we croats never do that, especially not in football, and especially not in a WC semi final. scanoli knew our strengths and weaknesses, and capitalized on it and won, that plus some luck especially in their second goal and messi magic, is what at the end of the day gave argentina the win. simple as that.

Don't be fooled into thinking that smaller national teams can't underestimate the bigger ones. Or that there is a man in this world who is immune completely to the ego.
For us, the great temptation came after we won Brazil, also the match between Argentina and the Netherlands(Dirty game) added fuel to the fire and we were not up to that psychological task.
but honestly under the circumstances it was quite difficult to come up with the task. especially if we add the fact that the referee will want messi in the final and you know that fact, and still you need to be immune to it..

And that's mostly thanks to Modric who is world class legend of football but also a player who sacrifices himself for the team and with that makes the whole team better and then consequently we are often in a positive state of psyche and somehow push towards victories even when we are not at our best.
But the psyche is a tricky thing it can easily turn around if somone is not in right state of being and it change a lot of little things during the match..

I am not one of those conspiracy theorists about fifa and cheating etc and this wasnt that, but that was never a penalty, the person with the momentum is the only person who can avoid a collision, the ball was already shot, with Alvarez having no chance of reaching it again even if the collision didnt happen, but Livakovic's feet were set,he stopped moving, made himself as big as possible to block the ball and Alvarez ran into him,and no Livakovic couldnt move away because the he was on his knees and the collision happened about half a second after he set into his position, its a tight call but if reviewed its not a penalty, actually its a foul on Livakovic because Alvarez was the one who caused the collision, and this is not just my opinion,I always watch the ex or current UCL refs after the game commenting on the positives and the negatives, and all of them said its not a pen,and I agree,Livakovic set in his defensive stance, not moving not trying to foul Alvarez just trying to stop the ball,Alvarez already shot it,no chance of getting it back and then colliding into the gk,clear as day that its not a pk,maybe not on first glance in speed but on the VAR check for sure

Croatia lack world class attackers. That was their greatest undoing. At the end of the day you need good front men to win. You can't keep sustaining matches with low goal output.

First goal should have been a corner for croatia on the other end of the pitch, penalty is also a bit strange. That penalty was the breaking point of the game.

Congrats to Argentina for advancing to the finals, it was definitely deserved. Croatia's lack of a world class striker was very badly felt during this game....despite wonderful possession football, they created next to no danger at all - and they did not have a plan B like the Dutch had.
However, am I the only one who thinks it's weird that in 2 consecutive games, a PEN is awarded to ARG without any VAR check at all? I would say at this stage, at this level, with so much at stake such a decision at least warrants a quick check to see the incident from different angles and in slow-motion.
To me, it looks like Alvarez clatters into the goalkeeper, and hits the keeper's right knee: in slow-motion you can clearly see the force of the hit spins the goalkeeper around, and at no time did he lunge or make a challenge on Alvarez. Only for this reason, a VAR check would have been the right decision.

Also Croatians lacked good Centerbacks. Alvarez just dribbled through 3 or 4 of them with ease.
