- Ben and Owen Franks are professional rugby players for the New Zealand All Blacks, winners of the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Take a peek into their lives and see how they balance training, family and nutrition.
In addition to their sports-specific training, both brothers are dedicated CrossFitters and run their own affiliate: Reebok CrossFit Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. For them, both rugby and CrossFitting are a family affair; their father Ken is the director of coaching for Reebok CrossFit Canterbury.
In this Part 1, the family and their coaches share how the brothers became professional rugby players.
"From a young age, we were always training down at the park and going for runs, and Dad had us throwing all sorts of stuff," Owen says. Once they reached their teens, the boys decided they wanted to be professional rugby players.
"For me, there was no other option in life but to become an All Black, and it was always in my head, you know, growing up and playing rugby," Owen says.
The brothers show how hard they train and how training together has helped them both succeed.
"Pretty much we've always trained together," Ben says. "It's pretty special ... having two All Blacks in one family. It's pretty unique." - Sport
I played football for 10 years and started playing rugby this year and I can say without a doubt that rugby has pushed me way harder than football ever did. I played offensive line for football so I always had to rely on just my strength and footwork but playing prop in rugby I had to use all that plus play way more game time and pretty much bash into every other forward on the other team. I have much respect for rugby and the players and feel like people who bash it have never been on a pitch.
I'm from england and the Franks bros are a big inspiration for me just by how hard they train and how dedicated they are. i am also a prop and i want to play like them.
Awesome inspirational video. These guys could hit the speaker circuit with their story. Applies to all walks of life, not just All Blacks. The belief they had at an early age even when everyone was telling them the couldn't make it (Ben left CBHS - massive). These guys have that vital TOP 10% that gave them the drive, the belief, and extremely supporting parents. Incredible, inspirational, should be publicised much wider than a UTube Video.
Owen Franks is a beast! He's probably the best prop in world rugby and he tackles like a truck!
Gotta love the work ethic that these two have man...amazing
Really cool vid. I'm a Bok fan, but love how these guys epitomise what rugby is all about. Amazingly hard workers.
the older i get and the more i travel the more i love my country and its people.
It's awesome to hear about the hard work they put in early on and not just about the teams they are in. The brothers and father are pretty dedicated...inspiring. Had to have a chuckle at that pass at 14:51 though. :)
Awesome looks like USA football workouts. I love the fact that the coach talking about planting and making a move is "spot on" where he wants the move to take place.
INSPIRATIONAL:)
& sweet, chilled vibe of these ambitious Men!!:)
RUGBY AND CROSSFIT THE MOST EXPLOSIVE AND WONDERFUL THINGS IN THE WORLD♥
Crossfit is saturated in PEDs.
Rugby is.......

very humbling new zealanders are very inspiring
Very motivating for weight training.
Wicked!
Awesome watch... you should have sold this to the networks they would hav brought it.
would anyone know if the music at 0.05 to 1.05 is available anywhere or is it just a one off? as that would be sick to listen to during a session.
@AyrProp39 orite lad in same boat as u this is my 2nd season in union and iv managed to get scouted and the coaches were teaching us that smaller steps forward in wet weather during scrum. Good luck playing pal
does anyone no what the music is called at the start of this clip
I couldn't agree more bro. I play American Football and my best mate plays Rugby. We're both almost identical body-types in regards to size and weight, but somewhat different in performance. We perform in a way that adopts to our sport. I perform in shorter bursts but more explosive and faster but my mate performs with more endurance. Regardless, we don't compare ourselves. We just respect each other for our sport
By the way mate, its the NFL not the NHL. :) Work Hard, Play Easy.
can someone give me advice about holding up the scrum on marshy, wet ground. i can scrum great on solid ground, but my feet just seem to slide right back on marshy ground and i can't do anything about it. i am 17 and have only played for 2 years but i want to go pro, and i have got much better since the start of this season and i am trying to be the best i can. thanks for any help.
The two games are completely different too, the stopages in NFL are different to the set-plays in rugby. set plays are tiring for the forward pack, scrumming and line outs involve so much physical effort. holding a squat position while holding up a 100kg guy x3 is insane, or jumping and lifting in the line outs is comparable too.
can anyone tell me what is the song in 5:50?
yep, good is probably not enough..
aahha "he's gonna have a run...but he ran into Franks"..bang!
Song at the start?
God, someday I hope that I can enjoy watching youtube videos about rugby, rugby league, or American football without people debating about which one is better or which one is worse.
Beast, Animals, Tanks
anyone else see the beer in owen's fridge at 2:48 haha
and that other school that ben went to was aranui high who had all league players and thats where he learnt how to pass the ball..
OOOO FINALMENTE :)
How much was that front squat?!
Definitely not roided out. Professional rugby players are tested about as much as most other international athletes especially when you're playing in the Rugby World Cup.
Think half of that has got to do with the number of players on a Football team (43 i believe?) vs Rugby(15 On field + 7 reserves) as well
That's completely debatable as I've seen it recorded at 50-66 a game especially in this day and age with the professionalism of the sport and I read somewhere that a player actually participates in a play in the NFL between 6-12 minutes a game. Which is not including the 40 seconds between downs etc. That is a huge difference. I'm a huge fan of the NFL btw, I'm just sick of the disrespect shown to Rugby players by Yanks. My reply was to a comment I was annoyed at, dont take it too literally.
compairing them to ray lewis is very difficult as they're trained very differently to do very different jobs. Endurance wise no question rugby players have it but brute force and sprinting... would probably get edged out by some NFL linebackers / DL /TE's... keep in mind the NFL has plenty of 300lbs + guys that are extremely quick.
nice plug for ON Gold Standard
not just a good rugby player both frank brothers are world class and honestly all you saw was a squat that squat will still smack the hell out of anyone on the rugby field lol
but I do agree there really is no comparison
this Yank knows what Rugby fit is...those few who don's give ruggers their respect are just ignorant to the game. It is the best team sport i have ever played, by far.
era uma vez
Wow
When Ray Lewis can play defense and offense for 80 minutes then maybe he can actually afford a ticket to the same ball park as a rugby player.
the only reason I came here was to improve my knowledge of training ;)
only reason i came here is for the rugby
Yeah boy!!!! New Zealand pride!
he opened the fridge and a 6pack of Steinlager was there
hahaha, , , , fucken legends !!!!
"Owen liked to break things". Not what an opposing T/H wants to hear!
Also both these guys are around 260lbs which is well below an offensive lineman's size. Average size of an offensive lineman in the NFL 330lbs... so we're talking about a 70lbs difference on these guys, hardly comparable.
type in david coutts tight head/loose head my highlights of this year! with london irish academy
There are no RWC's in '12, '13, '14. It's like football, every four years
Ray lewis is more like a back rower fast and powerful and their main job is tackling, whilst props such as these guys are more linesmen i see
I think Auckland Grammar school has produced the most All Blacks
Wouldn't they be training with the crusaders doing preseason in the offseason and not this stuff?
obviously not
Fuck the Franks brothers are strong
Oh they're sponsored by Reebok and they're doing Crossfit....Shock
All hard mahi here..to much fellas
why crossfit ppl dont do the back squat?
good grief i nearly fell asleep listening to owen
i would like to see a american footballer have a fight with a prop rugby player ....
They laughed when I told them I would bulk up with "MAD Ripped Muscle", but then I showed them the results. Google MAD Ripped Muscle to see their reaction. (You should see their faces!)
Auckland Grammar School has produced the most All Blacks not Christchurch Boys' High School
You just said you cant compare the two sports and players and did just that in the last sentence. Fact is rugby players would find the transition to NFL easy but NFL players wouldnt find it easy going into rugby, even ray lewis, rugby doesnt just require massive endurance but also the ability to think on your feet all the time and a particular set of skills for each role, with NFL you have the coach telling you what to do down to the letter and only the QB makes decisions, etc etc
Is he eating tomato sauce and beer every meal?...
Undoubtedly Ray Lewis is quicker over the ground, but as for explosive speed and power there's nothing in it.
How is this cross fit? Looks like he does weight lifting and that's it.
So what happened at world up 2012 and 2013 :)?
Who the heck is Ray Lewis? He doesn't play rugby. Enuff said...
steinlager in the fridge haha
that poor baby is being given VEGEMITE?!
205kg
Can't compare athletes from American footy to this, it's all different, few NHL players can match the endurance required but few rugby players can match the explosiveness ans speed of the NHL players, as for the ray Lewis thing that guy can't be matched where it matters most, the top two inches, not even macaw can lead people like ray can,
Before I clicked on this I knew yanks would be on the defensive about their sports.
Lets get this clear:
RUGBY PLAYERS REQUIRE EXTREME AEROBIC FITNESS!
TIGHT FORWARDS BASICALLY CONDUCT WRESTLING MATCHES BETWEEN RUNNING.
YOU CANNOT COMPARE TO THE NFL!
( Diehard Denver Broncos fan)
Why she eating Vegemite hahaha
If you are looking to get stronger, you should look up on google Mega Muscle Method. That can help you get the body you deserve.
They look better wit the beards
I honest to God Would have Been a Pro Rugby Player. A Hooker. But That dream Has Past because I got Hammered By a Clumsy Dumb Fuck in a SUV who Did a hit and Run. Shit Happens.
shit what injuries did that cause you? sad to hear
Jase Miller The injury of constant capitalization.
NO rep frank's "PB" front squat
Agreed.....and lots of drugs tests before they play!
Except they weight about 30-40kg less than offensive lineman, and are only at best equal in terms of strength and power with linebackers. They are very good, but they are not THAT good.
Ok nfl fan boys. Well trade you one rugby star of any generation to play one theoretical season of nfl at any position and you choose one nfl star of any generation to play one theoretical season of international tests at any position and well see who comes out with the more successful athlete.
To say anyone is infinitely superior in terms of strength, speed and power means that the person you are talking about has 0 strength, speed or power. Please don't talk about science if you have no idea what the word infinite means...
but the best players come from chch boys high then auckland grammer..
8:27 No rep! Just kidding, these guys are tough as nails. But seriously, no rep. Not like I can front squat that, though.
ive got a feeling he has mobility issues. people who weigh 120kg arent usually the most flexible. full depth squatting also isnt something you need in rugby
pikanoob Where did you read you don't need 'full depth' squats for rugby? I would think being able to generate force through a greater range of motion is never a bad thing...Look at how a scrum starts, that's pretty deep.
not full depth deep. theyre never really below parallel. and the angle they are at also doesnt allow them to really go full depth. go watch some scrums and its pretty obvious none of them are getting in the bottom position of a deep squat.
pikanoob How deep is 'deep'? Below parallel? From what I've read I would say that a full ROM helps with efficiency of movement. As an athlete it is important to produce force through a wide ROM, due to the dynamic nature of competing you very rarely are able to predict what will happen e.g what stresses will occur to the body. So it is better to train to a full ROM in order to facilitate any potential stresses on the body. In the instance of a partial squat this may reduce the flexibility in the hip joint and may result in an inability to the absorb force applied to it and may increased the risk of injury. Maximal strength over a full ROM is only ever going to be good gainz!
j farrell yeah im talking full ass to grass deep. olympic lift deep. I agree, one should always go for maximum ROM. however, my point is that this guy may not be flexible enough. anyone can tell you bigger guys have more trouble getting deep in squats unless theyve worked on mobility issues. I think thats whats happening here
everything is good.but these guys dont work.they dont need a job.they have many money.the others that have to work from 7 am untill 7 pm what can they do.can they mix crossfit and work?
Not even Mcaw can lead people like Ray can? What F'N crap! I'm a huge Ray Lewis fan but they are both miles apart in terms of Leadership Techniques. Both men have created amazing Legacies to which not many will reach but to say one is better than the other in terms of Leadership abilities is just Rubbish!
i meant yank as in american. Even IF you were good as a rugby nation if it was a bigger sport, it doenst matter... coz you're so scared, as a country, to not be the best at something that you only play sports that are isolated to the USA. every proffessional rugby player has twice the skill of any nfl player... Dan Carter is equivalent to a punter... a field goal kicker... a quarterback... a runningback... a receiver and a linebacker, i do respect SOME nfl players as athletes, not as sportsman
nnnnnnice
