Hey Michael, greetings from Radio Tower Records in Berlin. In 1972 I was trying to find my way in the world on my own as a very young teenager in England. To earn some money to buy records I did some strange jobs including working at a bird sanctuary. And on a rainy Sunday a guy - it’s true - asked me if I would like to listen to some music. What did he play me? Harvest of course. And throughout that year much, much more which built a foundation for my musical knolwedge. 50 years later I’m still listening to Harvest and I still have the single ‘Heart Of Gold /Sugar Mountain’.

I received my copy yesterday and it is a beautiful box set. There is enough bonus content to make this a necessary buy even for us longtime neil fans, unlike the after the gold rush box set. I hope neil will continue this with his other albums.

A great video as always Michael , i have been very tempted to buy the box set and your video detailing and showing the content has persuaded me to order it .
With regards to the football it would be a lie from an english perspective not to have had a little smile when Germany failed to go through the group stages , although you have taken any laughs at your expense with good humour . Anyway England can't be too complacent playing Senegal tomorrow , a win for us is far from guaranteed . Keep up with the brilliant informative album videos.

I"ve been floating about checking channels - I've been here in the past, but the Mofi thing sucked up everything at the time and there was no way I thought I'd get a true impression of the Different Channels; yours included. So, I held off making a comment of the channel till things had cooled and returned to day-to-day experiences before MoFi. --- I'm still waiting to make a comment, but I ENJOYED YOUR SHOW and it's content and wanted to at least share that. - m.

I have ordered the box, thanks for another inspiring video from. Of course I have the previous edition. Here in Norway, Harvest is twice as expensive as regular LP, but is worth it, because the quality of the paper, the design and just touching the records gives an experience. One of those album covers, in its design, that captures the music to its perfection. The box is expensive compared to what I get with another artist, I don't agree, but this is counterwork.
Personally, I especially value music with a timelessness, Neil Young and The Band's productions from this time are, in 100 years you find Harvest under a rock in Colorado, it still makes sense. In the same way as classic novel. The documentary about Harvest will be completely unique, with film frequencies from the studio. The Old man that the song is about is available as an interview subject, so the record rises so much with this material, which cannot be obtained anywhere else but the box. That's what it should be with box with this price, a whole, nothing can be removed.
It is very rewarding to see reactions from when people hear a song for the first time. There are many of these on youtube, "Old man" from Harvest hits a tender emotional spot with many (as does Dark side of the moon/Pink Floyd), it's rap artists, youth, music lovers, professional, everyone just loves Neil Young.They all say, this Neil Young I have to listen to more. He stands above the music, epic record. One of the criteria for receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature is that it must be universal, for all different cultures and eras. Not stuck in a form of cult club. Even then, the the literature can be difficult to access, but has a design that breaks down barriers between people and enhance the senses.

The original album came with the same lyric sheet insert and also an inner sleeve that was beige/brown which matched the colour of the album cover.

Great episode as usual. Box sets do seem to be the vogue. They make more money than an album alone I should think. The reissue after reissue thing too is becoming passe.
It's a novelty now but a good way to own a rare lp.
Young"s catalogue is hard to top & Harvest is one of the best for sure !

Agree, it's an amazing boxset
I read on the Steve Hoffman forums that some people have experienced poor audio quality on the BBC In Concert DVD such as low frequency distortion making it unlistenable, although the CZcams videos uploaded on the official Neil Young channel sound fine.
I just recently bought the Original 1st pressing from 1972 and today picked up 1978 reissue in EX + condition. Going to be interesting to hear those differences in sound or mastering.

Listening to Harvest is good for the soul but hopefully it will help with your cold too, take care of yourself

Nice review Michael, thanks. I will get this now, and since the After The Gold Rush box is down to around $50.00 I'll probably buy it too, not quite as bad a ripoff for an lp, a 7", and a box, as it was at the pre-order price.

It’s definitely a new cut by Chris Bellman for the 50th anniversary.New matrix numbers etc .I personally think he has re cut so it’s not his 2009 version.Take a look at both dead waxes the new harvest has a bigger dead wax compared to 2009 version & yet they are both 33rpm with the same number of songs,

A beautiful set. Got my copy for Christmas. Just watched footage of Neil Young in a LA record shop, filmed in 1972 (You Tube). He finds a bootleg of his music, walks out of the shop with it without paying for it saying "This my music". A wild time capsule, record store open at night in Los Angeles and Neil Young walks in

Feel like I've seen this all already in the movie he did in 74', Journey Through The Past....he didnt need the money, having sold his Catalog. Not sure what this was really about---we've seen all of this before with Journey Through The Past---photos, film clips, interviews,...guess its for true collectors, die hards willing to pay for it all. Love the music, not big on paying big for reissues. "Peace and Love, Lennons Goodbye"...
I really do love the earlier version with the Bellman mastering. But I just cannot buy another version of this record - there are too many other records to buy. If I didn’t already have the 2009 reissue yes the boxed set is a must have…

Why Epic is not doing the same for Donovan's "Gift From a Flower to a Garden" is beyond me. Released in '67 and '68 it was one of the first box set double records ever released. It needs the full modern treatment.

@taralewis9916 I think it is to a lot of people. I think these box sets are cash grabs and never worth the asking price. Booklets, posters and dvds are not that important to me. I can buy several albums for the price of this. You don't have to keep up with the Jones' do whsat you want, it's your choice and your money.

I hope he does a Landing on water deluxe. That is my favourite.
Also, I do remember reading something a while back where Neil Young said something like he really didn't like the Harvest album that much. I actually really enjoy Harvest but it's really a dark album. It's also recorded super flat with a ton of bass. Neil Young is a business man and he's revisiting and digging up things to issue like the Homegrown LP that came out a few years back and now available at a major discount on websites. I purchased and played it once. It's not that good. From what I read Neil didn't like it at the time and didn't move forward and release it. That was a good decision.

Cheers Michael - I’m holding back on this box set because I’ve more Neil Young vinyl than I’ve had hot dinners lol😂 ATGR and Harvest were my NY education [I still have my Harvest sheet music book which is in the same card] and original Harvest LP… Like the spectacles - what designer are they…?
The difference between the 2009 and the new press is the Cut by Chris Bellman is not the same, it's a new cut.
Michael, in my opinion the most important thing is the music and the quality of the pressing and no packaging or the hype sticker or poster. I put a vinyl on my platter and not the box 😊

I am very sorry if you have a DVD that is not perfect. We are working on a plan with Reprise for those of you who feel the BBC DVD has a problem and we will let you know when we have something to offer you and a good method.

Michael, are you aware of latest krautrock reissues? I was hoping to see a review of "Cluster II" 50th anniversary release and of the upcomming Walter Wegmuller "Tarot".
The quality does indeed look great Michael. But the £164 price is too high. If the cds were included as well, then I would stretch and make it happen.
As it stands I'm ok with the cd box set for £48. I already have the 2009 vinyl. So it would only be the BBC live vinyl that I'd be getting, in effect, difference. I tend to get all of his live archive stuff on CD anyway. Good luck with the flu.

Agreed. They make special camera and light setups just to show flat art and books. They work great! I've used them with lectures.

Is it worth $150.00 and sounding the same as the older edition? It seems to me that these days we are invaded by deluxe sets of great albums from the past costing well North of a $100.00. Not in my honest opinion, I will not spend that money. I buy records to listen to them and not worried about stickers or other items that fill those thick enclosures. A standard jacket, if properly taken care, will last a lifetime. For that price I can buy 5-6 new records and will take the same room as that "deluxe set" with just a little over 37 minutes of music. No, not for me.

On top of that our now ex-coach has been trusting too long on our ‘golden generation’, while he could have used some more young talent. But unfortunately that’s the way the game went. I think Modric is an out-of-this-world player. I have never seen him play a mediocre game. I’ve always liked the Croatian team (as off 1998), i hope they go far again. Good luck!

Each to their own, but to me boxsets are cash grabs . I am into the music and not booklets or dvds of "the making of" To me none of the box sets add up to the price they charge, and why isnt a straight forward single album not offered?

I have purchased 50 or 60 albums in the past 6 months. Almost all 180gm except for 3 200gm UHQR pressings. None were warped. A few had scuffed areas right out of the jacket, bu none warped.
I’d love to share some videos but not possible here it seems.
I have a Harvest original Lp that sounds better than the first cd release from the 80s. Much clearer. More punch. Will not spend more on harvest.

First they release it as a reissue, then wait a bit then reissue it again as a box set. First they issue it as a UHQR as a 33RPM then wait a bit then reissue it again as a 45RPM. Then they spice it up with: buy it now or cry later. How in the heck am I going to keep up with the Jones....
