    My Philosophy: I love music. I love all kinds of music. And I go into every album wanting to love it, so that’s my starting point for every review. Keep in mind, though, that music is a very personal thing. An album may hit me personally in a very different way than it hits you. That’s complexly natural and unavoidable, which is why I try to include some personal context in my reviews. It’s so you’ll have a better idea where I’m coming from. In the end, it’s still just my personal opinion, which is inherently biased, and which you may or may not agree with. Hopefully, once in a while, we’ll find common ground.

    I have the Immersion box set (cd version) - I did order the 50th as well as I'd like the vinyl , the book and the atmos mix. The price was high...but no higher than two trips to the grocery store these days. For my favorite album, it was worth it for me.

    Thanks for this video Kyle. I think you are bang on the money with your assessment. Since becoming a Pink Floyd fan in 1999, I have bought just about everything they have put out, but this new DSOTM boxset does leave me cold. I have the Immersion set and just watching you go through it makes see what a great purchase it was. It's the 50th anniversary and they had such a great opportunity to do something REALLY special. An opportunity missed. Thanks again for making this video - great content. :-)

      You know, the Immersion sets have been joked about a bit for years because of the swag items. (Marbles? Scarves?) But when it comes down to it, they delivered BIG TIME on content. How could they release sets as incredibly satisfying as the Immersion sets (and the Early Years) but then skimp so much on this new set... and expect fans to pay three times as much?? Ridiculous!

    For me, the Pink Floyd BoxSet is the first big disappointment of the year. What I don't like at all are these mixes of vinyl and Blu-Ray audio and DVD audio. If I am a friend of this 5.1 stuff, then please in separate sets for Fans who want this. If you don't have 5.1 System, this content make no sense. Halfway interesting is only the Wembley concert on vinyl, which will be available separately as vinyl, thank God. Then there is the announced price, almost 300 euros. Besides, the last remastering was by the same person, what should be much different now? Were is the 30th Anniversary cut by Kevin Gray? or a Steven Wilson remix could have been interesting. No Demos, no Outtakes, no unreleased Songs etc.!

    Thanks mate.
    You've helped to make up my mind.
    I have the immersion box set, as well as WYWH and The Wall , and I will keep the immersion set and just say no to the 50th anniversary set.
    I have a few Pink Floyd box sets including a 4 cd box set of The Wall live, Oh By The Way , the complete Pink Floyd cds , The Division Bell , which I haven't seen again , Animals on vinyl and remastered cd and The Piper at the Gates of Dawn as well as the remastered vinyl albums so I'm kinda thinking that there is not much more I could ask for.
    If the DSOTM is $300+ in the states it's going to be more expensive in Australia.
    When it comes to remastered box sets I use Jethro Tull as my metric. At least 4 cds & DVDs, excellent books with every reissue, easily handled, stored in book sized boxes and beautifully remastered by Steven Wilson.
    I love Pink Floyd but I'm thinking that I have more than enough of their music.
    PS , I also have Live at Pompei ( excuse the misspelling) DVD, when will we get a blu ray of that ? a WYWH blu ray of the documentary and a DSOTM DVD documentary. A Pulse blu ray box set , a Momentary Lapse of Reason box set as well as a couple of box sets of David Gilmore's solo stuff and of course The Endless River , someone should do a deep dive on that set.
    And finally a box set of Piper At the Gates of Dawn.
    I think I've given all I can give.
    Love Pink Floyd but I must respectfully decline this offer.
    Peace & love from Western Australia

    I believe the main reason people would buy this new box set is due to the release of the new Dolby Atmos mix, which has never been released before. As you know, Dolby Atmos is an immersive sound format that positions sound objects around and above you in space. I think this album deserves to be experienced in this type of listening environment, which has never been achieved before with any of the previous productions you mentioned.
    My only regret is that the Atmos disc is not being released separately at a normal price point, as more people would then have access to this new sound format for this brilliant album.

      It's not a new stereo mix. It's a stereo remaster. The original analog tapes having been remastered onto DAT (probably) at stupidly high resolutions and then the DAT master - remastered onto new high-res files for 'pressing' onto cd's sa-cds, blu-rays and vinyl ect. Remixing involves changing sound levels of the original multichannel audio eg making the cymbals louder on the 2018 Animals remix. The only new mixes included- I think are the spatial audio one for the Atmos disc. But as stated this new mastering will be available on streaming and in high res. But to able to hear any appreciable difference you'll need hi-fi kit that will set you back a serious amount of money.

Live Wall & recent Animals book sets. This will be the first time I will NOT be purchasing a Pink Floyd box set. Not to get too technical but the inclusion of the separate object based rendering Dolby Atmos/ Spatial disc in the 50 year box set is likely to have been because:
    a) the mix could be anything up to 24.1.10 - (ie 24 ear level speakers 1 sub woofer, 10 ceiling speakers) and which considering they're sending this mix out to do Planetarium /Imax shows seems likely, and Atmos like Dolby Digital+ is highly scalable. So not rigidly following the speaker configuration set up like say DTS 5.1 or PCM 5.1 does
    b) The format wars between Dolby and DTS rage on and blu-rays have traditionally been the preserve of DTS Master Audio. With another object based rendering system - Sony 360 being in the ring to boot - I'm guessing Dolby wanted Floyd management to nail their colours to it's mast for such an iconic release.
    c) More discs = better perceived value as you say.
    incidentally I own a 20th Anniversary Cd - remastered in 1992.. which is awesome - embossed disc and everything. And a 30th Anniversary vinyl re-issue remastered in 2003. Considering it was remastered again in 2011, and yet again for 2023... and they are going off second or third generation analogue tapes - it's certainly sweating the DSOTM assets; Especially considering that Nick Mason is on record as saying that the 2011 immersion ect sets were probably going to be the past physical releases. The Genesis box set coming out looks interesting, but the track listing is strange, and the concerts are incomplete. Kind of like the PF 74 Wembley concert. If you have all the live albums, Archives box set, and the later 5 box sets you can cobble together an entire a couple of shows from this new box set. Except for Ray Wilson's time with the band. The Middle Years could be a thing. I mean they released the 3 Immersion box sets back in 2011, but it didn’t stop them with this 50th Anniversary deluxe box.
      Who knows? Perhaps they see more profit in singular album box sets than era sets? Shame if they didn’t as the “Years” boxes, though had their faults, were both nicely put together. You are right, the remaster does sound terrible, at least the version I have listened to here on Pink Floyd's CZcams channel, when compared with the CZcams version of the original 1973 record. Notice how it seems that, in order to amplify Gilmour's guitar, they created a lack of, sometimes almost complete absence of the soundscapes and the backing vocals (the famous multi-tracked "oohs" and "aahs") that made Time into the masterpiece of a song that it is. Not really sure why this song was massacred (at least in the YT version of the 23 mix) to favour the guitar that, apart from that one ah-mmmazing solo, mostly plays rhythm. Perhaps it makes sense when heard in Atmos Dolby, idk

    I have every single boxed set they ever released, starting with Shine On, and up to The Early Years, The Later Years, the Animals remix. I also own just about everything they ever released on vinyle, including both the original and rereleased PULSE vinyle box (and a japanese CD replica of it) and the Echoes box set. I started to draw a line at the individual releases of stuff already available in the Later Years box.
    I have always made money available for a Pink Floyd release, however expensive was the set and tight my personal situation, they're just that important to me. Back in the day, I even bought a SACD player because of the first Dark Side release in 5.1. But this ? With both the cool new live LP cover and the book separately available, the only new thing left is the Atmos mix that I have no use for...
    Now to be honest, the people who own a Atmos-capable sound system probably have no problem with the $300 price. Eck, it's probably cheap enough for them to buy several as door stops.

    • @TrackXTrack
      @TrackXTrack  Před rokem

      Great point about those who can use the Atmos mix. Those sound systems are an investment that makes the $300 price of the box set seem cheap by comparison.

      As someone else commented, I think the 2023 remaster will inevitably be released separately at some point after they get enough people to buy the big box first. Not sure if I'd buy it, though. "Remastered" isn't always better. I mean, it's not as if the remaster from 2011 was sloppy or bad. No one was asking for this album to be remastered again.

    I like Dark Side Of The Moon but am not a big enough fan to buy the box set, even if its price decreases quite a bit. However, I'd really like to get just a blu-ray disc with the album in 5.1 surround sound. Last year's Animals reissue includes a stand-alone blu-ray disc with that album in 5.1, and it's only $20 on Amazon right now. Do you think this 50th anniversary celebration of DSOTM might eventually include a stand-alone blu-ray disc release?

    • @TrackXTrack
      @TrackXTrack  Před rokem +1

      I was VERY surprised the Animals bluray disc was released separately, and to be honest I don't expect the DSOTM bluray to be released separately, but I could be wrong. What I think we will see is a multi-disc set released later in the year that will be similar to the Momentary Lapse of Reason set, including the 2023 remastered album on CD along with multiple DVD/bluray discs, probably priced around $50. I do NOT expect that set to include the Wembley show again, nor do I expect it to include any of the Immersion set materials. We'll also see single CD and LP releases of the 2023 remastered album at the same time. And maybe, MAYBE a new SACD release similar to the Animals SACD.

      I just don't understand that the quality of the discs is so poor. The bluray from wish you were here also doesn't work. Also no replacement. No one to turn to. The early years blurays... well... ordered on amazon, got a replacement.
      Why would I spend 300 bucks on the atmos mix (the only interesting item) knowing the quality might be poor again?!

  • @thewatsoncollectiveproject

    For me, it’s very disappointing we’re not getting a new mix of this album, the original by Parsons is amazing, but as with the Animal’s remix, it makes you excited to hear the album again & I feel like ANOTHER remaster is useless when the 2011 is perfectly fine. The Immersion Set & The Wembley set will be what I’m purchasing.

    • @TrackXTrack
      @TrackXTrack  Před rokem +1

      I don't know. I agree a new remaster is pointless. But I'm not in favor of a remix. Animals truly needed it. But DSOTM is one of the best mixed albums of all time. Why remix it? Different for the sake of being different isn't a good reason.

    I’m one of 3 people in the United States who was never enamored with this album in particular and Pink Floyd in general. It has to do with the fact that I’ve never been much of a progressive rock fan. Having said that, I really enjoyed listening to your description of this box set, Kyle. You are always interesting to listen to, no matter the topic. Nice job as always.

    I agree! It's a money-grab and I can't get why they are demanding such a high price for it.
    I have all the music that this box contains before.
    Yeah, getting the Wembley live album on vinyl could have been cool, however I'm not going to pay the insane price they demand for this set just for that! It's not even the whole show!
    If they release the whole Wembley concert as a standalone album, I will be tempted to buy that though... at least if the price is reasonable.
    I already have Dark Side on vinyl, and I believe that almost everyone in the target group for this box has. The remastering is just a hype; the original sounded good enough, and in my experience remasters almost never sound better than the original releases, and I doubt this will be different.
    I also have the Dark Side part of the Wembley concert on CD, as part of the Experience edition I bought 12 years ago.
    The vinyl singles are not that interesting actually; they are just TERRIBLE radio edits of songs from the album. But if you want them, you can get the original singles cheap. I am also surprised that the Money single in the box set has a generic sleeve and not a picture sleeve as the single had in some of the countries in which it was released.
    As for everything else in this box; well, you'll get that and more in the Immersion Box Set, which seems to me to be better value for money. The Immersion box is also expensive, but you still get more for less than in the 50th anniversary box.
