    I've been a Neil Young fan since I was about 14 or so - I'm 62 now. I could go on about Neil, but instead I just want to talk about 'Four Strong Winds'. I grew up in Detroit and started paying attention to what my dad and older siblings were listening to on top 40 radio when I was three. I'm pretty sure I never heard 'Four Strong Winds' until maybe a year or two ago. A local oldies station that plays music from the 60's and 70's played this one day (a Canadian station :) - CKWW 580 AM). It was one of those rare times where I really liked a song right off the bat, and even though I didn't remember ever hearing it before, it gave me a 'nostalgic' feeling. My brother Tom was a folk singer back in the 60's, so I was exposed to a fair amount of folk back then, lots of Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul and Mary, The New Christy Minstrels... I'm pretty sure if I'd heard that song back when I was a kid I would have loved it. There's something about the melody and the feel of the song. It gives me a similar feeling to some of the songs I liked back when I was a kid. One of the earliest songs I remember really liking as a kid was also by a Canadian artist - Gale Garnett's 'We'll Sing In The Sunshine'. Hearing that brings me back to sitting in our dinette listening to the radio with my dad. Music has played a huge part in my life, and Neil was a big part of that. I love the fact that this song had such an effect on him, like so many songs did for me back in those days.

    If you aren't Canadian it's hard to appreciate the impact of "Four Strong Winds." It's almost an anthem up here in Canada, and there was a big outpouring of grief when Ian Tyson died, only a few weeks ago. Neil has covered the song too. Ian and Sylvia were quite big in Canada in the 60s and 70s, they had a TV show together for a while, "The Great Speckled Bird" their band...and Ian retained a large following when he went solo afterwards. If you ask older Canucks like myself for a list of all-time great Canadian songs, "Four Strong Winds" would be on many of the lists - and Neil's "Powderfinger" too, I might add....

      Sadly they died out fast, I'm a little younger and basically only know the 'rumour' of them. I've listened more lately, thats really nice pickin and a singin.

      I'm not from Canada and younger but as I kid when I heard "Four Strong Wind" the melody and song blew me away. Same with "They Call The Wind Maria" - I know the Frankie Laine version and one version was also liked by Neil. Neil likes the "Wind" and wrote at least 20 songs with reference to "Birds". And my favorite Neil song is Powderfinger.

    My inner recording engineer is screaming right now but I know Conan probably doesn't want to dive into another huge topic. Just seems it would be cool to hear how jarring hearing something in stereo for the first time messes with your head after so much time.

    • @pihermoso11
      @pihermoso11 Před rokem +4

      Yep it's a huge topic, because with mono there's the 45s and 90s vinyl, then 8 track came with stereo before the smaller cassette tapes of the 80s.. I was born '79 but as a baby I couldn't tell mono from stereo, my father just blasted his entire vinyl Beatles catalogue every weekend chance he got..

    • @micahsalberg4792
      @micahsalberg4792 Před rokem +1

      @@pihermoso11 yeah I was born in 86 but had a lot of older media around growing up. Found it fascinating thinking about spending so much time as a student focusing on how stereo panning is done but at the same time listening to older music totally differently.

    • @patreekotime4578
      @patreekotime4578 Před rokem +4

      And just dumping it to mono wouldnt even work because like Neil said, its possibly a totally different recording made after the mono version became a hit. Or its the same recording but the mix is totally different to take "advantage" of the stereo aspect. This is one of the reasons I cant stand the whole "remastered" craze of the 90s. Some unknown engineer is messing with a classic to give us THEIR version of it... Who the hell wants to hear that? So many CDs I bought in the 90s of 60s music all sounded wrong, with half of the music lost somewhere in the mix. And then to compound it, I listened to a ton of music on my moms 8-track player and record player that was apparently just ever so slightly slow, so the tempo and pitch were dramatically different (and better!) than the CD version.

      Between the 1950s to the early 1970s, singles were made specifically to sound good on AM radio in mono. "Folded down" mono (combining stereo to mono) can come out sounding weird.
      --Early Motown hits sometimes had two or three versions--label owner Berry Gordy would recall a single, then remix or rerecord it to get its sound perfect for radio. Look up the story of Smokey Robinson's "Shop Around"--the "hit" we all know was a totally new recording, and the original 'slower take' is now highly collectible.
      --Almost EVERY 45 on the Dunhill label is a "dedicated single mix" (some are LONGER than album versions!), then in the 70s ABC records trashed all the Dunhill singles master tapes to 'save on storage'. This means the biggest hits of Mamas & Papas, Grass Roots, Three Dog Night, and Steppenwolf are now very rare; mostly on CD as "needledrops". Only one company in Europe has put out ABC-Dunhill singles CDs, using dubbed tapes ABC had sent out internationally.

    Neil does a great version of Four Strong Winds on his classic 1978 LP Comes a Time. Interestingly, Bob Dylan & the Band also recorded the tune in the legendary 1967 Basement Tapes sessions, so Neil wasn't the only genius singer-songwriter affected by the tune.
